German-Speaking Jewish Refugees in Asia, 1930?1950 Shelter from the Storm?【

Although most perished, hundreds of thousands of Central European Jews escaped the Holocaust; tens of thousands of these Jewish refugees ended up in East Asia, Southeast Asia, or South Asia. Taking a global and transnational approach, this volume examines the cultural, political, and socioeconomic encounters among and between Asian and European states and empires, Central European Jews, and Asians between 1930 and 1950, offering important case studies that address the policies toward and experiences of German-speaking Jews across East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

The strength of this volume lies not only in its efforts to include multiple theoretical perspectives, which integrate German, Jewish, Asian, and Migration Studies, but also in the original empirical research on which it is based. Engaging directly with the rich and growing historiography on the origins, course, and consequences of the Holocaust in East, Southeast, and South Asia, this volume provides a framework in which we can better understand how global traditions of empire and colonialism matter in our efforts to understand the Holocaust, while indicating that Asian states and peoples were keenly aware of the so-called “Jewish Question” and made efforts, though widely differentiated, to provide shelter from the Nazi storm.

German-Speaking Jewish Refugees in Asia, 1930?1950 will appeal to students and scholars alike interested in the history of Jewish refugees in the twentieth century, as well as all those interested in the modern history of German-speaking Central Europe and Asia.

Dog Shelter Blues A Novel【電子書籍】[ Mark Conkling ]

This hard-hitting story lights up the world of animal rescue with engaging characters and their pets, bringing hope out of personal tragedies. Danny Sandoval, a character from the author’s previous book, “Prairie Dog Blues,” joins up with his friends to take on Norma Jean Lawson and her Safe Sanctuary No-Kill Rescue Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Danny accuses Safe Sanctuary of negligent animal care, claiming they do more harm than good. Undaunted, Norma Jean puts up a fierce fight through her attorney, and sues Danny for libel and slander. Danny fights back, and both Danny and Norma Jean struggle with their own internal demons as they attempt to rescue dogs and cats, innocent creatures that sometimes bring a mysterious transforming power to broken lives. Their battle shows that bad motives often end in darkness, and that animals and a clean heart can reveal pathways to God’s healing. “Dog Shelter Blues” takes these beaten, everyday people on a breathtaking journey that ends with an astonishing triumph of good over evil. MARK CONKLING--teacher, homebuilder, realtor, finance manager, retired Methodist pastor--returns to writing with this second novel, the first being “Prairie Dog Blues,” also from Sunstone Press. Mark lives in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, works with his wife Patricia (Meadowlark Family Healthcare), walks his dog in the Bosque near the Rio Grande, frequents the recovery community (AA), writes fiction, and seeks daily peace of mind. His short fiction was published in the Minnetonka Review and Diverse Voices Quarterly. Years ago, as a university professor (PhD, philosophy and psychology), Mark published several academic articles in existential philosophy and psychology, including “Consciousness and the Unconscious in William James' “Principles of Psychology,” (Human Inquiries), “Sartre's Refutation of the Freudian Unconscious,” (Review of Existential Psychology and Psychiatry), and “Ryle's Mistake About Consciousness” (Philosophy Today).

Fallout Shelter Designing for Civil Defense in the Cold War【電子書籍】[ David Monteyne ]

In 1961, reacting to U.S. government plans to survey, design, and build fallout shelters, the president of the American Institute of Architects, Philip Will, told the organization’s members that “all practicing architects should prepare themselves to render this vital service to the nation and to their clients.” In an era of nuclear weapons, he argued, architectural expertise could “preserve us from decimation.”

In Fallout Shelter, David Monteyne traces the partnership that developed between architects and civil defense authorities during the 1950s and 1960s. Officials in the federal government tasked with protecting American citizens and communities in the event of a nuclear attack relied on architects and urban planners to demonstrate the importance and efficacy of both purpose-built and ad hoc fallout shelters. For architects who participated in this federal effort, their involvement in the national security apparatus granted them expert status in the Cold War. Neither the civil defense bureaucracy nor the architectural profession was monolithic, however, and Monteyne shows that architecture for civil defense was a contested and often inconsistent project, reflecting specific assumptions about race, gender, class, and power.

Despite official rhetoric, civil defense planning in the United States was, ultimately, a failure due to a lack of federal funding, contradictions and ambiguities in fallout shelter design, and growing resistance to its political and cultural implications. Yet the partnership between architecture and civil defense, Monteyne argues, helped guide professional design practice and influenced the perception and use of urban and suburban spaces. One result was a much-maligned bunker architecture, which was not so much a particular style as a philosophy of building and urbanism that shifted focus from nuclear annihilation to urban unrest.

Ashraya A Shelter for All【電子書籍】[ Amishi Singhal ]

They call it an old-age home. But to the people who live there, it’s a waiting room for love that never comes back.

In Ashraya, each story is drawn from a real encounter: Sushmita, who always kept a jar of mango pickle for the sons who left her behind; Sugandha, who reminds us that love is not about holding on, but knowing when to let go; Ammu, who whispers to the wind because no one else will listen. These aren’t tales of tragedy but reminders of the quiet strength that outlives youth and memory.

Ashraya isn’t just a book about the forgotten elderly.

It’s equally about us, the ones who forget.

Tender and deeply human, Ashraya will stay with you long after the last page, leaving you looking at your parents, your grandparents, and perhaps even yourself, a little differently.

Rhetoric and Storytelling within the U.S.

This book explores the U.S. asylum process and how those seeking shelter deal with the rhetorical pressures of compelling asylum narratives they need to write in order to stay.

Centered around a study conducted at a shelter on the U.S. border, this book moves beyond this context to demonstrate how liminal sites provide opportunities for displaced communities to employ distinct shared rhetorical practices of daily lifeーlike silence and routineーthat both safeguard vulnerabilities and enact agency for individuals within precarious spaces. Placing people who seek asylum and those who work with them as rhetorical and socio-cultural experts on this issue, the study adds to the emerging importance of rhetoric within discussions of asylum and forced migration and demonstrates the significance of rhetorical ecology theory as part of a blended methodology in understanding people seeking asylum as a group in a perpetual and explicit state of ethos development.

Highlighting the need for support which is sensitive to the narrative struggles people seeking asylum face, this book will have important findings for scholars and upper-level students of cultural rhetorics, feminist rhetoric, migration studies, political science, and intercultural communication.

Just Shelter Gentrification, Integration, Race, and Reconstruction【電子書籍】[ Ronald R. Sundstrom ]

The United States of America is experiencing a housing crisis, which, by some estimates, started in the early 2000s and was made worse by the financial crisis of the 2007-2008 recession. Hundreds of thousands of Americans lack decent and affordable housing or everyday shelter. Instead, they must live in tent encampments stowed in the niches of neighborhoods and under the freeway overpasses of many major U.S. cities, often in unsafe conditions. Signs of this crisis are all around: in the spikes of evictions, in nationwide problems with over- and under-development, and in the growing concerns about the sustainability of this nation's towns and cities in the face of global climate change. This crisis didn't arise from the specific circumstances of the housing market or shortfalls in the construction of new homes or increased labor and material costs. The current housing crisis is the result of state-sponsored discrimination in housing and land-use policy and the enforcement of racial and class-based discrimination by neighborhoods and cities. All of these phenomena have had long-lasting effects on access to housing and educational and economic opportunity. Just Shelter is a work of political philosophy that examines the core injustices of the contemporary U.S. housing crisis and its relation to enduring racial injustices. It examines the harms of segregation, and asks: are desegregation or integration morally required of our communities and societies? Are the concerns that are expressed about gentrification related to the moral and political concerns that we have with segregation? Is there a moral imperative, and would it be politically legitimate, for our communities and society to mitigate or stop gentrification? Just Shelter investigates gentrification, segregation, desegregation, integration, and homelessness. To achieve justice in social-spatial arrangements, federal, state, and local governments must prioritize the crafting and enforcement of housing policy that corrects the injustices of the past. If we do not address the history of racism in housing policy, we will never solve today's housing crisis.

Shelter from the Storm Resting in the Promises of God a Daily Devotional【電子書籍】[ Andrew Maloney ]

The storms of life threaten all of us at one time or another, leaving us feeling lost, alone and without any hope. We all face adversities in the name of relationships, physical and mental health, the pain of loss, work stress, finances and persecution. Our relationship with Jesus Christ does not always exclude us from all the unpleasant circumstances life sometimes throws our way. But the Bible makes it clear that when we turn our lives over to God and pursue Him wholeheartedly, He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6), no matter what our temporary situation looks like in the natural. The truth is, we are never alone, and there is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24), granting to us out of His great mercy an inexhaustible supply of power and love to weather any life-storm we face. Through it all, He ensures we are more than conquerors. (Romans 8:37)

This first of two volumes in a year-long daily devotional highlights nearly a hundred of the most comforting and powerful verses on how God is our Shelter from the storm. Streamlined commentary unveils the truth of each passage and offers practical application to incorporate in one’s daily life. This devotional outlines the source material for your unwavering faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and offers biblical proof that we will be carried through the storm and rise above!

Imagine an attic. Not one of those movie attics, full of giant spiderwebs and ghosts, but one like in your own house, perhaps. With dusty boxes, forgotten memories, and the smell of old wood. A place so common that no one would pay it any mind.

Now, imagine a child. Not a superhero with a cape, but one of those children who prefer to observe the world rather than chase balls, who find wonder in the light dancing on the carpet or in the cities built by ants. A child like Leo, perhaps like you.

This is the year 2024, in a quiet neighborhood, one of those where the days seem the same and the nights are filled with the chirping of crickets. But sometimes, the extraordinary doesn't arrive with a bang, nor with an explosion of light in the sky. Sometimes, it begins with a simple hum in the silence. A sound that shouldn't exist.

And it is in that instant, in the most forgotten part of the everyday, when a secret of the universe decides to reveal itself. A secret that doesn't speak of distant wars, but of lost essences, of invisible bonds that connect all living things, and of a threat that seeks not to destroy, but to

silence.

This is the story of how a normal boy, his insatiable curiosity, and two inseparable friends became, without seeking it, the guardians of something that transcended the stars. It is a story about the value of the small, the strength of friendship, and the surprising truth that, sometimes, the shelter for the vastest cosmos is found in the most unexpected place: a brave heart, and a quiet home on Earth.

If you are ready to hear the echo of a forgotten song, and to discover the invisible threads that unite us all, then the adventure is just beginning.
