At the Foot of the Himalayas Paleontology and Ecosystem Dynamics of the Siwalik Record【
|

This authoritative volume brings together decades of insights from one of the longest terrestrial fossil records on the planet.

The fabled Himalayas have isolated and sheltered the Indian subcontinent for millions of years. The Siwalik sequence of sediments at their feet has been a treasure trove of visions into the past for generations of paleontologists, preserving an immense 20 million years of terrestrial ecosystems' fossil record. The Siwalik sequence reveals a unique forest wonderland of diverse animal species: from huge elephant relatives, great rhinos, and sabertooth cats, to mongooses, swamp rats, crocodiles, and catfish. Regional climate change eventually caused this forest ecosystem to unravel, as grasslands replaced the forests and established the habitats and animals of the modern ecosystems of the Indus and Ganges rivers.

In At the Foot of the Himalayas, celebrated paleontologists Catherine Badgley, Mich?le Morgan, and David Pilbeam bring together a collection of world-renowned scholars to present an interdisciplinary approach to documenting and interpreting this fossil record. By investigating changes in landscape, climate, and vertebrate species diversity, their analysis reveals insights into a central question about biodiversity: which evolutionary developments were influenced by changes in climate, and which were caused by interactions among the species themselves? This groundbreaking book illuminates for the first time a mysterious and vibrant paleontological past, bringing together more than 40 years of exciting international collaborative studies that forge invaluable knowledge pathways for the ecologists, evolutionary scientists, and paleontologists of the future, and pose important questions about our fragile ecosystems in the present day.

MOUNT EVEREST - The First Expedition of 1921 (Illustrated Edition) Account of the Reconnaissance Expedition to Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Charles Kenneth Howard-Bury ]
|

The 1921 British Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition set off to explore how it might be possible to get to the vicinity of Mount Everest, to reconnoiter possible routes for ascending the mountain, and ? if possible ? make the first ascent of the highest mountain in the world. A feasible route was discovered from the east up the Kharta Glacier and then crossing the Lhakpa La pass north east of Everest. It was then necessary to descend to the East Rongbuk Glacier before climbing again to Everest's North Col. Initially the expedition explored from the north and discovered the main Rongbuk Glacier, only to find that it seemed to provide no likely routes to the summit. However, at the time it was not realised that the East Rongbuk glacier actually flowed into the Rongbuk glacier ? it was thought it descended away to the east. As a reconnaissance the expedition was a success because it determined that a good route might be to approach the East Rongbuk glacier via the Rongbuk glacier, and then follow the North Col route to the summit.

Mobile Lifeworlds An Ethnography of Tourism and Pilgrimage in the Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Christopher A. Howard ]
|

Mobile Lifeworlds illustrates how the imaginaries and ideals of Western travellers, especially those of untouched nature and spiritual enlightenment, are consistent with media representations of the Himalayan region, romanticism and modernity at large. Blending tourism and pilgrimage, travel across Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and Northern India is often inspired and oriented by a search for authenticity, adventure and Otherness. Such valued ideals are shown, however, to be contested by the very forces and configurations that enable global mobility.

The role ubiquitous media and mobile technologies now play in framing travel experiences are explored, revealing a situation in which actors are neither here nor there, but increasingly are ‘inter-placed’ across planetary landscapes. Beyond institutionalised religious contexts and the visiting of sacred sites, the author shows how a secular religiosity manifests in practical, bodily encounters with foreign environments. This book is unique in that it draws on a dynamic and innovative set of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives, especially phenomenology, the mobilities paradigm and philosophical anthropology. The volume breaks fresh ground in pilgrimage, tourism and travel studies by unfolding the complex relationships between the virtual, imaginary and corporeal dynamics of contemporary mobile lifeworlds.

Religion, Spirituality, and the Way of Life in the Himalayas: Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and Myanmar【電子書籍】[ Malcolm Teasdale ]
|

This book details my experiences in the Himalayan regions of Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, and Myanmar.
In an effort to become more educated about the way of life of its peoples, I discovered that religion is such an important part of their everyday life. Also, as the lands become more integrated into the mountains, the feeling of something spiritual becomes noticeable. Maybe it's the solitude, the peacefulness, or could it be that the Himalayas possess a certain mystic.
My travels took me into the cities congested streets where I mingled with the locals and learnt about their culture, the historic and important sacred temples that support the regions religions, and the near isolation in the mountains.
These Himalayan regions possess a certain magic that one cannot encounter elsewhere in the World, and I am truly thankful for the opportunity I have been given to venture into these lands. Be enlightened.
Chapters include:
- Kathmandu - Religion, Temples, Bars, Chaos and Pollution
- Soul Searching and Trekking in Nepal, an unforeseen relationship
- Keeping it sacred in Bhutan
- The Road to Tibet
- Like a Sudden Hope in the Dark Night of the Soul
- Connecting the Dots

Facing extreme cold and witnessing unfathomed snow desert, he rode on, fulfilling a dream. From hotel rooms to sleeping in tents amidst nowhere, he was driven to live a life only imagined. The journey only proved to be but a learning lesson giving new meaning to his being and his surroundings. Riding through the dangerous Zoji La and the battle fields of Kargil he plunged into the wilderness of Suru Valley, crossing the vast snow desert to the most interior part of Ladakh, Zanskar. Taking head on the mighty Khardung La, he then rode across the beautiful sand dunes of Hunder towards the last village of the country, Turtuk, on Indo-Pak border located very close to Karakoram Range. Meandering through the mighty Chang La and riding on the bank of mystically beautiful Pangong Tso towards Chushul on Indo-China border. He then continued to ride on the bank of Indus River through the painted mountains and high altitude desert to the highest Observatory of Hanley. He tracked his route witnessing the nomadic life of Karzok and magical lake, Tso Moriri and towards the high altitude wild life zone of Tso Kar. Mountain Goddesses of the Himalayas, Four True Experiences, A Memoir【電子書籍】[ M.G. Hawking ]
|

The author, explorer M.G. Hawking, spent sixty-two months in the Great Range of the Himalaya, during which time he and his companions experienced three encounters with beings they believe to have been the true "Mountain Goddesses" of ancient Tibetan and Himalayan legends. Experience these extraordinary encounters and the profound wisdom they revealed.

Whoーor whatーare the "mountain goddesses"? Throughout Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and the Himalayan regions of India, there have endured extraordinary ancient legends of "extraterrestrial" beings said to have come from "another world" and who, having arrived in an antediluvian era of prehistory, still dwell in a concealed inner region of the immense wilderness of the Himalayas. The earliest known reference to the Himalayan extraterrestrials appears in the scriptures of the 4000 year-old pre-Tibetan Zhang Zhung culture of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, yet further references exist across a number of ancient traditions, including the pre-Buddhist B'on treatises from the Himalayan region of Nepal, and in wisdom traditions throughout Asia.

Are these ubiquitous legends merely myths? Or are they representative of some vaguely remembered reality passed down through generations beyond count? Absent an ember, there can be no smoke; there is a kernel of truth in all such ancient legends and, in light of today's astronomical knowledge, they cannot be easilyーor wiselyーdismissed. Data from the Hubble Space Telescope has revealed that, rather than the previously estimated 200 billion galaxies in the observable universe, there are more than two trillion galaxies (JPL, Oct 2016). To put this in perspective, if you hold a single grain of sand at arm's length against the night sky, the tiny patch of sky it hides contains more than 100,000 galaxiesーnot 100,000 stars, 100,000 galaxies. These range in size from dwarf galaxies with a few billion stars to giant galaxies with 100 trillion stars.

The incomprehensible immensity of our universe inspires a deep sense of aweーand inspires as well many questions. What's really out there? Clearly, the number of stars in our universe is beyond the mind of man to number, but what about planets? As of late-2023, NASA had verified the existence of over 5,557 exoplanets, that is, planets orbiting other stars in our Milky Way galaxy. "It's very exciting," said NASA's Dr. William Kinney. "It opens up the universe. Now we know that we're just one of billions and billions of small worlds that are very much like ours. If you extrapolate that to our galaxy as a whole, the calculation based on the Kepler data is that there are around 40 billion planets in the Milky Way alone."

Transcribed directly from the journals of explorer M.G. Hawking's five years in the Himalayan regions of Nepal and Tibet, this book contains detailed narratives of the encounters and conversations the author and his companions had with the actual, legendary Himalayan "mountain" or "celestial goddesses," as the Tibetan term translates. During their second and third encounters, the celestials disclosed profound intelligence about our universe, our planet, and our true nature, wisdom that can greatly assist in understanding ourselves, our world, and our role and power in creating precisely the life we desire.

An incomparable book for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge and personal power, and deeply rewarding for those fascinated with the ancient accounts of extraterrestrial influences. 2025 Edition, e-reader page count 317 (estimated, actual count varies with the reading device used). Lost in the Valley of Death A Story of Obsession and Danger in the Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Harley Rustad ]

|

"A layered inquisition and a reportorial force…a technicolor mystery.... In prose that moves like a clear river....Rustad has done what the best storytellers do: tried to track the story to its last twig and then stepped aside.”ー New York Times Book Review

In the vein of Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild, a riveting work of narrative nonfiction centering on the unsolved disappearance of an American backpacker in Indiaーone of at least two dozen tourists who have met a similar fate in the remote and storied Parvati Valley.

For centuries, India has enthralled westerners looking for an exotic getaway, a brief immersion in yoga and meditation, or in rare cases, a true pilgrimage to find spiritual revelation. Justin Alexander Shetler, an inveterate traveler trained in wilderness survival, was one such seeker.

In his early thirties Justin Alexander Shetler, quit his job at a tech startup and set out on a global journey: across the United States by motorcycle, then down to South America, and on to the Philippines, Thailand, and Nepal, in search of authentic experiences and meaningful encounters, while also documenting his travels on Instagram. His enigmatic character and magnetic personality gained him a devoted following who lived vicariously through his adventures. But the ever restless explorer was driven to pursue ever greater challenges, and greater risks, in what had become a personal questーhis own hero’s journey.

In 2016, he made his way to the Parvati Valley, a remote and rugged corner of the Indian Himalayas steeped in mystical tradition yet shrouded in darkness and danger. There, he spent weeks studying under the guidance of a sadhu, an Indian holy man, living and meditating in a cave. At the end of August, accompanied by the sadhu, he set off on a “spiritual journey” to a holy lakeーa journey from which he would never return.

Lost in the Valley of Death is about one man’s search to find himself, in a country where for many westerners the path to spiritual enlightenment can prove fraught, even treacherous. But it is also a story about all of us and the ways, sometimes extreme, we seek fulfillment in life.

Lost in the Valley of Death includes 16 pages of color photographs.

The Biography of a God Mahasu in the Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Asaf Sharabi ]
|

Mahasu is the joint name of four gods whose influence is widespread throughout the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Like other deities in the Western Himalayas, they are regarded as royal gods who rule over territories and people. This book traces changes in faith and practices surrounding the Mahasu brothers, and shows how the locals understand these changes by emphasizing the dominant role of humans in the decisions of the gods. The locals are also constantly testing the authenticity of the human mediumship. Thus, the book presents the claim that the gap between local conceptions of divinity and the perceptions of anthropologists regarding gods may be narrower than we think. The Biography of a God: Mahasu in the Himalayas is based on ethnographic research, resulting in an important contribution to the study of Indian village deities, Himalayan Hinduism, lived Hinduism, and the anthropology of religion.

For as long as he can remember, Dr. Jerry Reidel has heard, listened to and felt comforted by the foreign voice in his head. When he discovers that "the foreigner" is speaking to him in Hindi, he decides to do all he can to figure out why the Hindi voice has chosen him. Jerry believes he's come a long way toward and understanding why the voice is in his head, until he experiences his first "glimpse". He realizes he's in way over his head and seeks the counsel of his colleague, the free-spirited "queen of metaphysics", Dr. Miranda Madras. Jerry tells Dr. Madras that his only wish is to spend time face-to-face with Drakali-anu, also known as The Patron Saint of the Himalayas.

With her guidance, support and wisdom, Jerry begins to walk the path that will lead him to the Hindi voice of wisdom inside him. However, before he can spend quality time with his inner-Hindi, he must take several journeys - around the globe, into the spirit world and deep into the mountain cave of his own soul. As he journeys, he learns myriad lessons about his personal history, his spiritual beliefs and how and why he walks in the world.

Lies are dispelled, the illusion of control is released and healing is found within the pages of The Patron Saint of the Himalayas.

Enjoy the ride!

Volume 4 covers the Western and Central Himalayas, the well-known mountain range on the Indian subcontinent. The unique flora and fauna of the Himalayas are varied, affected by climate, rainfall, altitude, and soils, and are vulnerable to impacts from climate change. The editors espouse that because indigenous non-Western societies form the vast majority of people now as well as in the past, a study of their plant interrelationships is necessary, and India is one of the most important regions of the old world for its ancient and culturally rich and diverse knowledge of ethnobotany. With this in mind, these volumes share a great deal of information that will be valuable to plant botanists and others working in and interested in ethnobotany.

This important volume covers the ethnobotanical aspects of many plants of the region. It looks at

ethnic diversity of people

ethnic food plants and food preparation

ethnomedical aspects of plants

psychedelic plants and their possible link to soma, a vedic ritual drink whose plant origins are a mystery

ethnoveterinary medicinal plants

ethno-conservation practices

biodiversity heritage sites

The volume includes the details of the plants used, their scientific names, the parts used, and how the plants are used, providing the what, how, and why of plant usage. The book is well illustrated with 20 color and 67 b/w illustrations.

Together, the five volumes in the Ethnobotany of India series presents the available ethnobotanical knowledge of India in one place. India’s ancient and culturally rich and diverse information and use of ethnobotany will be valuable to those in the fields of botany and plant sciences, pharmacognosy and pharmacology, nutraceuticals, and others. Lost in the Valley of Death A Story of Obsession and Danger in the Himalayas【電子書籍】[ Harley Rustad ]
|

**NATIONAL BESTSELLER
ONE OF CBC'S BEST CANADIAN NONFICTION BOOKS OF 2022

For fans of Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild, the riveting story of the unsolved disappearance of an American backpacker in Indiaーone of at least two dozen tourists who have met a similar fate in the remote and storied Parvati Valley.**

For centuries, India has enthralled Westerners looking for an exotic getaway, a brief immersion in yoga and meditation, or, in rare cases, a true pilgrimage to find spiritual revelation. Justin Alexander Shetler, an inveterate traveler trained in wilderness survival, was one such seeker.
In his early thirties, Justin quit his job at a tech startup and set out on a global journeyーacross the United States by motorcycle, then down to South America, and on to the Philippines, Thailand, and Nepalーin search of authentic experiences and meaningful encounters while documenting his travels on Instagram. His enigmatic character and magnetic personality gained him a devoted following who lived vicariously through his adventures. But the ever-restless explorer was driven to seek out ever-greater extremes, and greater risks, in what had become a personal questーhis own hero’s journey.
In 2016, he made his way to the Parvati Valley, a remote and rugged corner of the Indian Himalayas steeped in mystical tradition and shrouded in darkness and danger. There he spent weeks studying under the guidance of a sadhu, an Indian holy man, living and meditating in a cave. At the end of August, accompanied by the sadhu, he set off on a spiritual journey to a holy lakeーone from which he would never return.
Lost in the Valley of Death is about one man’s search to find himself, in a country where, for many Westerners, the path to spiritual enlightenment can prove fraught, even treacherous. But it is also a story about all of us and the ways, sometimes extreme, we seek fulfillment in life.
