Courage and Cowardice in Ancient Greece From Homer to Aristotle【電子書籍】[ Andrei G. Zavaliy ]
|

The book offers the first comprehensive account of the debate on true courage as it was raging in ancient Greece, from the times when the immensely influential Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, were composed, to the period of the equally influential author, Aristotle. The many voices that contribute to this debate include poets, authors of ancient dramas and comedies, historians, politicians and philosophers. The book traces the origin of the earliest ideal of a courageous hero in the epic poems of Homer (8th century BCE), and faithfully records its transformations in later authors, which range from an emphatic denial of the Homeric standards of courage (as in comedies of Aristophanes and some Dialogues of Plato) to the strong revisionist tendencies of Aristotle, who attempts to restore genuine courage to its traditional place as an exclusively martial, male virtue.

Without attempting to cover the whole of the Western history, the book is able to explore the most important primary Greek sources on the subject matter in greater details, and provide the reader with a comprehensive picture of the changes in both popular and philosophical conceptualizations of the standards of courage from the Archaic period to the middle of the 4th century BCE. A deeper understanding of the history of the debate on courage should help to shape the modern discussions as well, as it becomes obvious that many of the questions on courage and cowardice that are still raised by the contemporary authors from different fields, have been thoroughly considered during the early stages of Greek culture.

The book seeks to undermine a common stereotype of a single, unified view on courage and cowardice in Ancient Greece and shows that the current debates on what constitutes genuine courageous character can be traced to the various direct and indirect discussions on this subject matter by the ancient authorities.

The Iliad and The Odyssey + Homer and His Age【電子書籍】[ Homer ]
|

This carefully crafted ebook: "The Iliad and The Odyssey + Homer and His Age" contains 2 books in one volume and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Iliad and the Odyssey are two epic poems written by Homer around the 9th century BC. They are two of the oldest recorded written works in history. The Iliad deals with a ten-year war between the Greeks and Trojans, called the Siege of Troy. It centers around Achilles, the great Greek hero who was dipped in the river Styx when he was young and whose only weak spot was his heel. He was killed when Apollo helped one of his enemies shoot an arrow into his heel. The Odyssey is about Odysseus´s voyage from the war back home to Ithaca, which took another 10 years. Homer (around the 9th century BC) is the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, and is revered as the greatest of ancient Greek epic poets. Homer's works, which are about fifty percent speeches, provided models in persuasive speaking and writing that were emulated throughout the ancient and medieval Greek worlds. Homer and His Age by Andrew Lang was written in 1906. Lang was highly regarded as a Homeric scholar and Homer and His Age is one of the works he contributed to this area of study. Table of contents: Preface; The Homeric Age; Hypotheses as to the Growth of the Epics; Hypotheses of Epic Composition; Loose Feudalism: The Over-Lord in "Iliad," Books I. and II.; Agamemnon in the Later "Iliad"; Archaeology of the "Iliad". Burial and Cremation; Homeric Armour; The Breastplate; Bronze and Iron; The Homeric House; Notes of Change in the "Odyssey"; Linguistic Proofs of Various Dates; The "Doloneia"; The Interpolations of Nestor; The Comparative Study of Early Epics; Homer and the French Mediaeval Epics; Conclusion.

Homer's "The Iliad" stands as a monumental epic poem that delves into the tumult of the Trojan War, encapsulating themes of heroism, honor, and the grim realities of conflict. Composed in dactylic hexameter, the narrative intricately weaves the personal and the political, exploring the lives of legendary figures such as Achilles and Hector. Written in the 8th century BCE, it reflects the cultural values and martial ethos of ancient Greek society, while its vivid imagery and rhetorical flourishes highlight the emotional toll of war. The poem'??s exploration of fate versus free will resonates deeply, creating a timeless tension that speaks across ages and civilizations. Homer, a figure shrouded in mystery, is thought to have been an itinerant bard, likely originating from the eastern Mediterranean. His works, including the "Odyssey," reveal profound insights into human nature and societal constructs, influenced by the oral tradition prevalent during his time. "The Iliad" is not merely a recounting of heroic deeds but serves as a broader commentary on the human condition, a reflection of the struggles and values of the time. For readers seeking an understanding of ancient literature, "The Iliad" is an indispensable text that illuminates the complexities of character, morality, and the tragic consequences of war. It challenges the reader to engage with the universal themes of human conflict and the price of glory, making it a compelling read not only for enthusiasts of classical literature but for anyone questioning the nature of humanity.

Hearing Homer's Song The Brief Life and Big Idea of Milman Parry【電子書籍】[ Robert Kanigel ]
|

From the acclaimed biographer of Jane Jacobs and Srinivasa Ramanujan comes the first full life and work of arguably the most influential classical scholar of the twentieth century, who overturned long-entrenched notions of ancient epic poetry and enlarged the very idea of literature.

In this literary detective story, Robert Kanigel gives us a long overdue portrait of an Oakland druggist's son who became known as the "Darwin of Homeric studies." So thoroughly did Milman Parry change our thinking about the origins of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey that scholars today refer to a "before" Parry and an "after." Kanigel describes the "before," when centuries of readers, all the way up until Parry's trailblazing work in the 1930's, assumed that the Homeric epics were "written" texts, the way we think of most literature; and the "after" that we now live in, where we take it for granted that they are the result of a long and winding oral tradition. Parry made it his life's work to develop and prove this revolutionary theory, and Kanigel brilliantly tells his remarkable story--cut short by Parry's mysterious death by gunshot wound at the age of thirty-three.

From UC Berkeley to the Sorbonne to Harvard to Yugoslavia--where he traveled to prove his idea definitively by studying its traditional singers of heroic poetry--we follow Parry on his idiosyncratic journey, observing just how his early notions blossomed into a full-fledged theory. Kanigel gives us an intimate portrait of Parry's marriage to Marian Thanhouser and their struggles as young parents in Paris, and explores the mystery surrounding Parry's tragic death at the Palms Hotel in Los Angeles. Tracing Parry's legacy to the modern day, Kanigel explores how what began as a way to understand the Homeric epics became the new field of "oral theory," which today illuminates everything from Beowulf to jazz improvisation, from the Old Testament to hip-hop.
