Politics through the Iliad and the Odyssey Hobbes writes Homer【電子書籍】[ Andrea Catanzaro ]
|

Facing censorship and being confined to the fringes of the political debate of his time, Thomas Hobbes turned his attention to translating Homer’s Iliad and the Odyssey from Greek into English. Many have not considered enough the usefulness of these translations. In this book, Andrea Catanzaro analyses the political value of Hobbes’ translations of Homer’s works and exposes the existence of a link between the translations and the previous works of the Malmesbury philosopher. In doing so, he asks:

? What new information concerning Hobbes' political and philosophical thought can be rendered from mere translation?

? What new offerings can a man in his eighties at the time offer, having widely explained his political ideas in numerous famous essays and treatises?

? What new elements can be deduced in a text that was well-known in England and where there were better versions than the ones produced by Hobbes?

Andrea Catanzaro’s commentary and theoretical interpretation offers an incentive to study Hobbes lesser known works in the wider development of Western political philosophy and the history of political thought.

Modernism and Homer The Odysseys of H.D., James Joyce, Osip Mandelstam, and Ezra Pound【電子書籍】[ Leah Culligan Flack ]
|

This comparative study crosses multiple cultures, traditions, genres, and languages in order to explore the particular importance of Homer in the emergence, development, and promotion of modernist writing. It shows how and why the Homeric epics served both modernist formal experimentation, including Pound's poetics of the fragment and Joyce's sprawling epic novel, and sociopolitical critiques, including H.D.'s analyses of the cultural origins of twentieth-century wars and Mandelstam's poetic defiance of the totalitarian Stalinist regime. The book counters a long critical tradition that has recruited Homer to consolidate, champion and, more recently, chastise an elitist, masculine modernist canon. Departing from the tradition of reading these texts in isolation as mythic engagements with the Homeric epics, Leah Flack argues that ongoing dialogues with Homer helped these writers to mount their distinct visions of a cosmopolitan post-war culture that would include them as artists working on the margins of the Western literary tradition.

The Iliad Bestsellers and famous Books【電子書籍】[ Homer ]
|

The Iliad is an ancient Greek epic poem in dactylic hexameter, traditionally attributed to Homer. Set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy by a coalition of Greek states, it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. Although the story covers only a few weeks in the final year of the war, the Iliad mentions or alludes to many of the Greek legends about the siege; the earlier events, such as the gathering of warriors for the siege, the cause of the war, and related concerns tend to appear near the beginning. Then the epic narrative takes up events prophesied for the future, such as Achilles' looming death and the sack of Troy, although the narrative ends before these events take place. However, as these events are prefigured and alluded to more and more vividly, when it reaches an end the poem has told a more or less complete tale of the Trojan War. The Iliad is paired with something of a sequel, the Odyssey, also attributed to Homer. Along with the Odyssey, the Iliad is among the oldest extant works of Western literature, and its written version is usually dated to around the 8th century BC. Recent statistical modelling based on language evolution gives a date of 760?710 BC.

The Victor's Crown Greek and Roman Sport from Homer to Byzantium【電子書籍】[ David Potter ]

Incorporating the latest research, The Victor's Crown offers an analysis of how competitive sport emerged in Greece during the eighth century BC, and then how the great festival cycle of Classical Greece came into being during the sixth century BC. Special attention is paid to violent sports of boxing, wrestling and pancration. We meet the great athletes of the past and discover what it was that made them so great.

It shows how the rise of the Roman Empire transformed the sporting world by popularizing new forms of entertainment (chiefly chariot racing, gladiatorial combat and beast hunts). David Potter vividly brings to life the experiences of being fan and competitor, and extrapolates skilfully to the modern day, creating not just a history of ancient sport, but also an examination of the social and cultural roles sport has played throughout history.

Homer's Odyssey A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned About Love and Life with a Blind WonderCat【電子書籍】[ Gwen Cooper ]

ONCE IN NINE LIVES, SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY HAPPENS.

The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen’s veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who’d been abandoned. It was love at first sight.

Everyone warned that Homer would always be an “underachiever.” But the kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease, survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen’s life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night. But it was Homer’s unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that transformed Gwen’s life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized that Homer had taught her the most valuable lesson of all: Love isn’t something you see with your eyes.

BONUS: This edition contains a new afterword and an excerpt from Gwen Cooper's Love Saves the Day.

Homer and the Tradition of Political Philosophy Encounters with Plato, Machiavelli, and Nietzsche【電子書籍】[ Peter J. Ahrensdorf ]

In this book, Peter Ahrensdorf explores an overlooked but crucial role that Homer played in the thought of Plato, Machiavelli, and Nietzsche concerning, notably, the relationship between politics, religion, and philosophy; and in their debates about human nature, morality, the proper education for human excellence, and the best way of life. By studying Homer in conjunction with these three political philosophers, Ahrensdorf demonstrates that Homer was himself a philosophical thinker and educator. He presents the full force of Plato's critique of Homer and the paramount significance of Plato's achievement in winning honor for philosophy. Ahrensdorf also makes possible an appreciation of the powerful concerns expressed by Machiavelli and Nietzsche regarding that achievement. By uncovering and bringing to life the rich philosophic conversation among these four foundational thinkers, Ahrensdorf shows that there are many ways of living a philosophic life. His book broadens and deepens our understanding of what a philosopher is.

〓 God Complex: Sibling Rivalries, Lightning Bolts, and Other Olympian Disasters
by Homer Sapien

If your family reunions are awkward, imagine being part of a divine soap opera where your brother hurls earthquakes when he's mad, your dad swallowed your siblings, and your favorite pastime is seducing mortals disguised as a swan. Welcome to Mount Olympus, where the egos are immortal, and the therapy bills are eternal.

In God Complex, Homer Sapien invites you behind the celestial curtain for an all-access, front-row seat to the ultimate dysfunctional family drama. It's a scandal-packed tell-all where Zeus can't keep it in his toga, Hera's vengeance makes Real Housewives look like preschool, and Hades just wants everyone to leave him alone in his goth cave.

From divine tantrums to epic grudges, this book breaks down the myths we thought we knew ー and reveals that the gods aren't just powerful, they're also hilariously petty. Who knew immortality came with this much baggage?

Why should you read this divine mess?

Because your siblings may be annoying, but they've (probably) never chained you to a mountain.

You'll never look at thunderstorms the same way again.

Learn what not to do if you're handed dominion over the entire sky.

Meet the entire mythological squad: drama queens, eternal bachelors, and chaos agents ー all with delusions of grandeur.

And if you can't get enough of Olympian antics, dive into other masterpieces by Homer Sapien, like The Odd-yssey of Odysseus (one man's epic struggle with accountability) and Achilles' Heel and Other Poor Life Choices ー a deep dive into warrior rage and sandal fashion.

Because when the gods are just as messy as we are, mythology becomes way more fun.

The Odyssey An Epic Journey Through Myth and Legend【電子書籍】[ Homer ]
|

Homer's 'The Odyssey' stands as a monumental epic of ancient Greek literature, encapsulating the arduous journey and trials of Odysseus as he strives to return to Ithaca after the Trojan War. In a rich tapestry of narrative woven with vivid imagery, intricate character development, and lyrical verses, the poem employs the hexameter style typical of epic poetry. Thematically, it explores universal concepts of heroism, loyalty, and the struggle against fate, while interspersing elements of the divine and human experience, marking its place within the context of Greek mythology and culture, particularly the aftermath of war and the quest for identity. Homer, often celebrated as the father of Western literature, produced 'The Odyssey' in the 8th century BCE, during a time of social and political evolution in ancient Greece. His firsthand experiences and oral storytelling traditions likely influenced his portrayal of themes such as hospitality, honor, and revenge. The historical backdrop of a warrior society in transition imbued his work with depth, serving as both a reflection of and commentary on the zeitgeist of his era. Readers are encouraged to immerse themselves in this timeless epic, as 'The Odyssey' not only captivates with its adventurous narrative but also invites profound reflection on the human condition. Its exploration of the complexities of homecoming, identity, and resilience promises lasting relevance, making it an essential read for anyone interested in literature, history, or the timeless struggles that shape our existence.

Homer in the Twentieth Century Between World Literature and the Western Canon【
|

This collection of essays explores the crucial place of Homer in the shifting cultural landscape of the twentieth century. It argues that Homer was viewed both as the founding father of the Western literary canon and as sharing important features with poems, performances, and traditions which were often deemed neither literary nor Western: the epics of Yugoslavia and sub-Saharan Africa, the keening performances of Irish women, the spontaneous inventiveness of the Blues. The book contributes to current debates about the nature of the Western literary canon, the evolving notion of world literature, the relationship between orality and the written word, and the dialogue between texts across time and space. Homer in the Twentieth Century contends that the Homeric poems play an important role in shaping those debates and, conversely, that the experiences of the twentieth century open new avenues for the interpretation of Homer's much-travelled texts.

The Iliad: Join Achilles at the Gates of Troy as he slays Hector to Avenge the death of Patroclus. Here is a story of love and war, hope and despair, and honor and glory. The recent major motion picture Helen of Troy starring Brad Pitt proves that this epic is as relevant today as it was twenty five hundred years ago when it was first written. So journey back to the Trojan War with Homer and relive the grandest adventure of all times. The Odyssey: Journey with Ulysses as he battles to bring his victorious, but decimated, troops home from the Trojan War, dogged by the wrath of the god Poseidon at every turn. Having been away for twenty years, little does he know what awaits him when he finally makes his way home. These two books are some of the most important books in the literary canon, having influenced virtually every adventure tale ever told. And yet they are still accessible and immediate, and now you can have both in one volume.

|

In October 1945 at the age of 19, John Freely passed the southernmost tip of Crete on his way home from the war in China, just as Odysseus did on his homeward voyage from the battle of Troy. He has been bewitched by Homer and the lands of Homer's epics ever since. As the culmination of a life spent exploring both these lands and the stories by, and connected to, Homer, Freely has created a captivating traveller's guide to Homer's lost world and to his epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, investigating where such places as the Land of the Lotus Eaters are and what it was about the landscapes of Greece and Turkey that so inspired Homer - the greatest classical epic poet. With unparalleled knowledge and passion, John Freely guides the traveller through all of those places linked to Homer that can be identified and brings Homer and his world vividly to life, revealing how the Homeric epics continue to echo through the ages in literature, art, legend and folklore.
