The Darby School of Art A Forgotten Chapter in the History of American Impressionist and Modern Painting【電子書籍】[ Mark W. Sullivan ]

This first full-length account of the Darby School of Art overturns Philadelphia’s long-held unwarranted reputation and demonstrates that Philadelphia was a hub of avant-garde painting in the early twentieth century.

This first full-length account of the Darby School of Art overturns Philadelphia’s long-held unwarranted reputation as artistically stodgyーunwilling and unable to embrace Impressionism, post-Impressionist, and abstract artーand demonstrates that Philadelphia was more avant-garde in the early twentieth century than previously thought.

This is the story of an almost completely forgotten summer art school that flourished first in Darby, PA, and then in Fort Washington, PA, between 1898 and 1918. The Darby School of Art was founded and operated by Thomas Anshutz and Hugh Breckenridge, two artists who taught during the academic year at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Anshutz and Breckenridge brought a lot of new ideas about painting back to Philadelphia after their European sojourns, and introduced those ideas to a public that was initially not very responsive to Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and semi-abstract art. But an appreciation for modern styles of painting began to slowly grow among Philadelphia artists and collectors, and Anshutz and Breckenridge were in the forefront of this development. They also sympathized with what some have called the "New Woman" movement, which backed women who wanted to pursue careers outside of the home.

In this new history, expert Mark Sullivan argues that the Philadelphia area was a genuine hub of avant-garde painting in the early twentieth century, even though it has earned the reputation of lagging far behind New York City in its openness to new styles of painting. It also discusses how the Darby School should be recognized as an institution that got behind the idea of women as professional artists at a time when that concept was quite radical.

The Impressionist Murders【電子書籍】[ William Cody Sargent ]

Two Arab men are found murdered near downtown Houston, Texas, and detectives Ross Clayton and Leona Stillwell are sent to investigate. These aren’t ordinary murders, howeverーthe bodies are arranged to mirror a famous Impressionist painting, and the exactitude of the killing gives Clayton cause to be concerned. He suspects this killer isn’t finished.

His suspicions turn out to be correct as more men end up dead and similarly arranged. Every victim is of Arab descent, and it’s hard to deny the killer must have both some kind of racial vendetta and a love for Impressionist art. Clayton and his partner have no choice but to seek out an expertーLund Corbel from the Houston Fine Arts Museum. He sets them on the right path, but their path gets crowded as the serial killer continues the spree.

Clayton has solved plenty of strange crimes before, but he’s beginning to feel out of his depth, especially following the death of a fellow cop in pursuit of another investigation involving drugs, prostitution, and murder. Soon, two investigations collide, and the end won’t be as pretty as a painting.

William Woodward (1859-1939) was a force in New Orleans and the art world, and his legacy endures. In this first compilation of examples of Woodward's work spanning his career, essayists offer unique perspectives on the artist and his art.

Woodward was a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and the Massachusetts Normal Art School. He started the School of Art and organized the Department of Architecture at Tulane University, and he taught evening art classes to citizens of New Orleans. His oil crayon paintings of the French Quarter were instrumental in preserving the French Quarter buildings from destruction, and he was a leader in the Arts and Crafts movement in New Orleans. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects. Woodward also organized the Art Association of New Orleans and the Decorative Art League for Women, which founded the manufacture of art pottery in New Orleans.

Woodward was a prolific artist and pioneered new techniques with his use of the Rafaelli oil crayon and the fiberloid dry etching process. Upon his retirement from Tulane in 1922, Woodward moved to Biloxi, Mississippi, where his paintings of the Mississippi Gulf Coast provide a historical record of an area now almost entirely changed by development and natural disasters. Woodward also traveled extensively and chronicled his travels in his art.

Mary Cassatt was a headstrong, determined girl. She wanted to be an artist in 1860, a time when proper girls certainly weren't artists. It wasn't polite. But Mary herself wasn't polite. She pursued art with a passion, moving to Paris to study, painting what she saw. Her work was rejected by the Salon judges time and time again. One day, the great painter Edgar Degas invited her to join him and his group of independent artists, those who flouted the rules and painted as they pleased-the Impressionists. Mary was on her way.

"I began to live," said Mary. Today, her paintings hang in museums around the world and she is recognized as one of the most celebrated female artists of all time.

The Letters of a Post-Impressionist: Being the Familiar Correspondence of Vincent Van Gogh【電子書籍】[ Vincent Van Gogh ]

Though the collection of letters contained in Cassirer’s publication, “Vincent Van Gogh. Briefe,” is not a complete one, from my knowledge of a very large number of the letters which are not included in this volume, I feel able to say that the present selection is in any case very representative and contains all that is essential in respect to Van Gogh’’s art-credo and general attitude of mind. For reasons into which it is unnecessary for me to enter here, it was found convenient to adopt the form of Cassirer’s publication arranged by Margarete Mauthner, and my translation has therefore been made from the German (Fourth Edition, 1911). Still, with the view of avoiding the errors which were bound to creep into a double translation of this sort, I took care, when my version was complete, to compare it with as many of the original French letters as I was able to find, and I am glad to say that by this means I succeeded in satisfying myself as to the accuracy of every line from page 39 to the end. The letters printed up to page 38, some of which I fancy must have been written in Dutchーa language which in any case I could not have readーhave not been compared with the originals. But, seeing that the general quality of the German translation of the letters after page 39 was so good that I was able to discover only the small handful of inaccuracies referred to in the appendix, I think the reader may rest assured that the matter covering pages 1 to 38 is sufficiently trustworthy for all ordinary purposes. I say that “I fancy” some of the letters which occur between pages 1 and 38 were written in Dutch; for I am not by any means certain of this. In any case I can vouch for the fact that the originals of all the letters after page 38 were in French, as I have seen them. But in this respect Paul Gauguin’s remark about his friend Van Gogh is not without interest: “Il oubliait m?me,” wrote the famous painter of n?gresses, “d’?crire le hollandais, et comme on a pu voir par la publication de ses lettres ? son fr?re, il n’?crivait jamais qu’en fran?ais, et cela admirablement, avec des ‘Tant qu’?, Quant ?,’ ? n’en plus finir.” Rather than disfigure my pages with a quantity of notes, I preferred to put my remarks relative to the divergencies between the original French and the German in the form of an appendix (to which the Numbers 1 to 35 in the text refer), and have thus kept only those notes in the text which were indispensable for the proper understanding of the book. Be this as it may, the inaccuracies and doubts discussed in the appendix are, on the whole, of such slight import, that those readers who do not wish to be interrupted by pedantic quibbles will be well advised if they simply read straight on, without heeding the figures in the text. To protect myself against fault-finders, however, such readers will understand that it was necessary for me to prepare some sort of a list referring to those passages which, in the German, differed even slightly from the French original.

Mapping Impressionist Painting in Transnational Contexts【

This book offers microhistories related to the transnational circulations of impressionism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The contributors rethink the role of "French" impressionism in shaping these iterations by placing France within its global and imperialist context and arguing that impressionisms might be framed through the mobility studies’ concept of "constellations of mobility." Artists engaging with impressionism in France, as in other global contexts, relied on, responded to, appropriated, and resisted elements of form and content based on fluid and interconnected political realities and market structures. Written by scholars and curators, the chapters demand reconsideration of impressionism as a historical construct and the meanings assigned to that term.

This project frames future discussion in art history, cultural studies, and global studies on the politics of appropriating impressionism.

Impressionist Subjects Gender, Interiority, and Modernist Fiction in England【電子書籍】[ Tamar Katz ]

Exploring the intersection of ideas about woman, subjectivity, and literary authority, Impressionist Subjects reveals the female subject as crucial in framing contradictions central to modernism, particularly the tension between modernism's claim to timeless art and its critique of historical conditions. Against the backdrop of the New Woman movement of the 1890s, Tamar Katz establishes literary impressionism as integral to modernist form and to the modernist project of investigating the nature and function of subjectivity. Focusing on a duality common to impressionism and contemporary ideas of feminine subjectivity, Katz shows how the New Woman reconciled the paradox of a subject at once immersed in the world and securely enclosed in a mysterious interiority. Book chapters feature discussion of modernists including Walter Pater, George Egerton, Sarah Grand, Henry James, Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, Dorothy Richardson, and Virginia Woolf.

Sophisticated and tightly argued, Impressionist Subjects is a substantial contribution to the reassessment and expansion of the modernist fiction canon.

Claude Monet, Free Thinker Radical Republicanism, Darwin's Science, and the Evolution of Impressionist Aesthetics【電子書籍】[ Michael J. Call ]

This revolutionary interdisciplinary study argues that Monet’s artistic practices and choices were the direct result of his political stance as a nineteenth-century libre penseur, a position characterized by radical republicanism, a progressive social agenda, and fierce anticlericalism. His efforts to create a style reflecting his personal political code led him to produce paintings proclaimed by like-minded free thinkers as ≪a science being constantly perfected≫ (Gustave Geffroy), that is, emphasizing only observable phenomena in the immediate present through scrupulous, insistent on-site observation, capturing the raw data of sensations and sensory experience, and purporting to record a world free of embedded meaning. Darwin’s world similarly comes with no prepackaged reassurance of humankind’s privileged place in it; it is instead a space in which all varieties of organisms and species compete for limited resources in a struggle for survival. The Darwinian model of nature appears to have influenced Monet’s artistic production increasingly as his style evolved over several decades. In opposition to post-Renaissance art that privileged the human presence in both representation and the viewing act, Monet’s later paintings create a sense of virtual and visual equality among all observable phenomena. The human ? and the viewer, by extension ? is thus represented as neither separate from nature as a disengaged observer nor superior to it but rather co-equal with all other organic life forms surrounding it. This approach, while echoing Darwin’s admiration of nature and its laws, also reminds humankind of its own fragility and the hard choices it must make to avoid extinction.

Impressionist Painting Its Genesis and Development【電子書籍】[ Wynford Dewhurst ]

Excerpt: “It may perhaps be interesting to the readers of this book to give a short account of its origin. From the earliest days of my pupilage to art I had been instinctively drawn towards the paintings of Turner, Corot, Constable, Bonington, and Watts, with an intense admiration for their manner in viewing, and methods of recreating, nature upon their canvases; and in later years I had been fascinated by the works of more modern artists, such as La Thangue, George Clausen, Edward Stott, and Robert Meyerheim. In 1891, a student in Paris, I found myself face to face with a beautiful development of landscape painting, which was quite new to me. “Impressionism,” together with its numerous progeny of eccentric offshoots, was at the time causing a great furore in the schools. Curiously enough I had been charged with copying Monet’s style long before I had seen his actual work, so that my conversion into an enthusiastic Impressionist was short, in fact, an instantaneous process."

Consuming Painting Food and the Feminine in Impressionist Paris【電子書籍】[ Allison Deutsch ]

In Consuming Painting, Allison Deutsch challenges the pervasive view that Impressionism was above all about visual experience. Focusing on the language of food and consumption as they were used by such prominent critics as Baudelaire and Zola, she writes new histories for familiar works by Manet, Monet, Caillebotte, and Pissarro and creates fresh possibilities for experiencing and interpreting them.

Examining the culinary metaphors that the most influential critics used to express their attraction or disgust toward painting, Deutsch rethinks French modern-life painting in relation to the visceral reactions that these works evoked in their earliest publics. Writers posed viewing as analogous to ingestion and used comparisons to food to describe the appearance of paint and the painter’s process. The food metaphors they chose were aligned with specific female types, such as red meat for sexualized female flesh, confections for fashionably made-up women, and hearty vegetables for agricultural laborers. These culinary figures of speech, Deutsch argues, provide important insights into both the fabrication of the feminine and the construction of masculinity in nineteenth-century France. Consuming Painting exposes the social politics at stake in the deeply gendered metaphors of sense and sensation.

Original and convincing, Consuming Painting upends traditional narratives of the sensory reception of modern painting. This trailblazing book is essential reading for specialists in nineteenth-century art and criticism, gender studies, and modernism.

Enchantment the Art and Life of Lilian Westcott Hale America's Linear Impressionist【電子書籍】[ Diane Elizabeth Kelleher ]

As the title suggests, this book concerns the art and life of the world's only "American Linear Impressionist", Lilian Westcott Hale. Born in Connecticut in 1881, Hale was educated primarily at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and lived for many years in nearby Dedham, moving to Charlottesville, Virginia after the death of her beloved educator, art critic, author, and painter husband, Philip Leslie Hale. A woman, Hale far outpaced the success of many men, including her husband. During her early decades of activity, Hale garnered innumerable naational awards, accolades, and prizes, and international acclaim for her oil portraits of children, women in interiors, and charcoal sketches of snowy landscpes, all created in an Impressionist style utilizing only vertical strokes. Hale was the originator and sole practitioner of a technique which paradoxically used line in an Impressionist manner. While her classic art fell out of favor during the Modernist 1940s and later, it is now once again very much in vogue. My relationship with the artist's only child, her daughter, Nancy, was of immeasurable assistance in the production of this book. The Ultimate Trophy How The Impressionist Painting Conquered The World【電子書籍】[ Philip Hook ]

In 1892 Degas' painting In the Caf? was sold for a mere 180 guineas at auction, with the public hissing as the hammer fell. Less than a century later another Impressionist work, Renoir's Moulin de la Galette, sold at Sotheby's for $78 million, accompanied by enthusiastic applause. In this history-cum-memoir Philip Hook, Senior Director of Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art department, examines the public's change of heart toward Impressionism. Starting with its shocking novelty and confounding style, he traces the impact of the Impressionist painting as it spread to Germany, America, and Great Britain, polarizing modernists and conservatives. Equally fascinating is the story of Impressionism's change in status. More than exceptionally pretty pictures, Impressionist works have become a currency in their own right, being bought and sold like blue-chip stock - coveted as much for their monetary worth as for their intrinsic beauty. Drawn from Hook's own experiences with art collectors and dealers, this fascinating chapter in art history is narrated through the lens of today's art market.

Impressionism The History, Ideas, and Culture of the Impressionist Movement【電子書籍】[ Kelly Mass ]

The art movement known as Impressionism unfolded in the 19th century, showcasing distinctive characteristics such as delicate yet visible brushstrokes, open compositions, and an emphasis on portraying light in its dynamic and ever-changing qualities. This movement, which emerged in the 1870s and 1880s, was propelled by a group of Paris-based artists who garnered attention through their independent exhibitions.

In the cultural landscape of France, the Impressionists faced staunch opposition from the established art milieu. Critic Louis Leroy, in a satirical review published in the Parisian daily Le Charivari, coined the term "Impressionism" in response to Claude Monet's painting titled "Impression, soleil levant" (Impression, Sunrise). The movement's initial surge in the visual arts paved the way for analogous developments in music and literature, collectively recognized as impressionist expressions.

Pioneering Impressionists challenged the norms of academic painting, aligning themselves with the avant-garde spirit initiated by artists like Eug?ne Delacroix and J. M. W. Turner. Their canvases were brought to life through freely applied brushstrokes, prioritizing color over rigid lines and forms. Venturing beyond the confines of studio painting, these artists, inspired by the likes of Delacroix and Turner, delved into the portrayal of contemporary life. Still lifes, portraits, and landscapes, typically confined to studio settings, found a new dimension as Impressionists embraced the outdoors, capturing the transient effects of sunlight en plein air.

“With large, crisply reproduced, color artwork on nearly every page, this picture-book biography . . . will appeal to a broad age-range.” ーBooklist

Mary Cassatt knew from a young age that she wanted to make her living as an artist. She persuaded her parents to send her to the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at age fifteen, and by age twenty, she had moved abroad to begin her painting career. After several years of study and success, she found her rightful place among the Impressionists, becoming their first and only female American member.
Illustrated with Cassatt’s own work and that of other influential Impressionists, as well as photographs of the artist, this book offers children a glimpse at life during the late 1800s and showcases the colorful vivaciousness of Cassatt's work. Her beloved portraits of mothers and children are highlighted here, but the book also includes lesser-known work that shows Cassatt’s range of talent. Children will enjoy seeing the warm and loving images of others their age relaxing with pets, enjoying the outdoors, and being held by caring adults.

Inspiring for all children, but especially appropriate for those with artistic interests, this book shows how one girl's lifelong dream to become an artist came true due to an independent spirit, determination, and commitment to her craft.

“Attractive, clear, and useful to young students.” ーLibrary Media Connection

“Through both words and art, this biography beautifully pictures the life of a talented and courageous woman.” ーwww.childrenslit.com

“Explores history and social context in an engaging manner that will connect readersーand their parentsーto earlier times.” ーThe Bloomsbury Review

Sense, Sensibility and Sensation: the Marvelous Miniatures and Perfect Pastels of Laura Coombs Hills America’s Lyrical Impressionist【電子書籍】[ Diane Elizabeth Kelleher ]

Innovative and yet traditional, Laura Coombs Hills (1859-1952) was renowned for both her miniatures on ivory and, later, her pastels of flowers. “Queen of Miniature Painters”, “…a veritable John Singer Sargent of miniature painting” and “Dean of Flower Pastels” were merely some of the many accolades ascribed to this New England artist. However, Hills’ accomplishments and contributions to America’s art historical culture entailed so much more.

Sense, Sensibility and Sensation: The Marvelous Miniatures and Perfect Pastels of Laura Coombs Hills, America’s Lyrical Impressionist was conceived and written as an atypical art history book to better explore Hills’ many contributions to American culture, with a view toward a broader understanding of Hill’s ethos. Beyond the presentation of her unique, biographical history as an independent, woman-entrepreneur, this book explores Hill’s role in perpetuating a sense of individualism associated more closely with the concepts of home, hearth, and honor of the nineteenth century than the psychological anomie associated with the Modernism of the twentieth, - her own time. In addition, on the pages of this book will be found relevant discussions regarding Hills’ ties to Sense, Sensibility and Sensation, that is, to the idea of individualism associated with nineteenth century miniatures and Walt Whitman’s celebration of America; the notion of beauty associated with Contemplative Romanticism espoused by Edmund Burke; the sentiments of the “Romance poets” (Lord Byron and Percy B. Shelley); as well as the nineteenth century color theories of Michel Chevreul favored by the Impressionists. Moreover, notions of “democratic empiricism”, “aesthetic lyricism”, and Hills’ passion for “symphonic colors” ? are all contributory factors which help to identity Laura Coombs Hills as what I have termed “America’s Lyrical Impressionist”.
