A memoir and manifesto by a pivotal figure at the junction of rock, the avant-garde, and an ever-widening spiral of art, theater, film, and dance.

For over five decades, Elliott Sharp has been engaged in a quest at once quixotic and down to earth: to take the music he hears in his inner ear and bring it to life in the real world. In this vivid memoir and manifesto, Sharp takes us along on that quest, through some of the most rugged, anarchically fertile cultural terrain of our time. Sharp, a mainstay of the New York Downtown scene beginning in the 1980s, has been a pivotal figure at the junction of rock, experimental music, and an ever-widening spiral of art, theater, film, and dance. Rooted in blues, rock, jazz, and the twentieth-century avant-garde, Sharp's innovative music has encompassed fractal geometry, chaos theory, algorithms, genetic metaphors, and new strategies for graphic notation.

In IrRational Music, Sharp dodges fake cowboys' real bullets by the side of a highway near Colby, Kansas; is called on the carpet by a prickly, pompadoured Morton Feldman (“Improvisation… I don't buy it”); segues from Zen tea to single malt with an elfin John Cage; conjures an extraterrestrial opera from a group of high-school students in Munich; andーback in his own high-school daysーlooks up from strumming Van Morrison's “Gloria” in Manny's Music on 48th Street to see Jimi Hendrix smiling benignly upon him. A mix of tales from the road with thoughts on music, art, politics, technology, and the process of thinking itself, IrRational Music is a glimpse inside the mind of one of our most exacting, exciting creative artists.

Sway The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior【電子書籍】[ Ori Brafman ]

A fascinating journey into the hidden psychological influences that derail our decision-making, Sway will change the way you think about the way you think.

Why is it so difficult to sell a plummeting stock or end a doomed relationship? Why do we listen to advice just because it came from someone “important”? Why are we more likely to fall in love when there’s danger involved? In Sway, renowned organizational thinker Ori Brafman and his brother, psychologist Rom Brafman, answer all these questions and more.

Drawing on cutting-edge research from the fields of social psychology, behavioral economics, and organizational behavior, Sway reveals dynamic forces that influence every aspect of our personal and business lives, including loss aversion (our tendency to go to great lengths to avoid perceived losses), the diagnosis bias (our inability to reevaluate our initial diagnosis of a person or situation), and the “chameleon effect” (our tendency to take on characteristics that have been arbitrarily assigned to us).

Sway introduces us to the Harvard Business School professor who got his students to pay $204 for a $20 bill, the head of airline safety whose disregard for his years of training led to the transformation of an entire industry, and the football coach who turned conventional strategy on its head to lead his team to victory. We also learn the curse of the NBA draft, discover why interviews are a terrible way to gauge future job performance, and go inside a session with the Supreme Court to see how the world’s most powerful justices avoid the dangers of group dynamics.

Every once in a while, a book comes along that not only challenges our views of the world but changes the way we think. In Sway, Ori and Rom Brafman not only uncover rational explanations for a wide variety of irrational behaviors but also point readers toward ways to avoid succumbing to their pull.

Taproots for Transformation Nurturing Intergenerational Discernment and Leadership in an Irrational World【電子書籍】[ Bruce Gilberd ]

Set against a background of hugely irrational social dysfunction and restlessness, the essence of the book concerns the ideal of people growing into a sufficient wholeness, integration and contentment in their identity. This requires all of us to take due account of each component of our personality (body, intellect, soul-spirit, emotion, and creativity) and intentionally nurturing these. Then, at each life-stage, we may function better as healthy citizens in family and community settings, being effective as role models, mentors and leaders in varied levels and contexts.

The book therefore challenges us to take our whole nature seriously as individuals, within the reality of our social, physical and emotional inter-dependence. It calls for new vision, in particular amongst educators, parents and others in the caring professions, including politicians, warning that without new enlightenment upon our relationships, with self, other, society and the environment, our highly unstable social ecologies will remain grossly inefficient, and swiftly become unsustainable.

After noting that 'future shock' has arrived, the first part of the book is devoted to outlines of 'the natural nature of persons', the 'givens' of the human situation. The second part focuses upon practical aspects of policy renewal that can offer grounded hope for more people attaining 'a good life', living and loving authentically in community.

Two helpful summarizing appendices are provided on 'mentoring' and on 'human attachment', themes which feature throughout the main text.

In their relaxed, uncomplicated, wise and spiritually illuminating conversations, the authors lead readers through implicit underlying questions of meaning and purpose in human life with sensitivity. Helpfully, they refer engagingly to their own problematic experiences of 'getting a life'. Matters of spirituality and faith are discussed with compassion and without dogma, noting that, without some understanding of our selves, including matters of brain and emotional development, 'religious beliefs' that lose sight of our basic need to receive, give and propagate 'reliable love' can be more of a problem than a solution within contemporary human living.

The 7 Laws of Magical Thinking How Irrational Beliefs Keep Us Happy, Healthy, and Sane【電子書籍】[ Matthew Hutson ]

In this witty and perceptive debut, a former editor at Psychology Today shows us how magical thinking makes life worth living.

Psychologists have documented a litany of cognitive biases- misperceptions of the world-and explained their positive functions. Now, Matthew Hutson shows us that even the most hardcore skeptic indulges in magical thinking all the time-and it's crucial to our survival.

Drawing on evolution, cognitive science, and neuroscience, Hutson shows us that magical thinking has been so useful to us that it's hardwired into our brains. It encourages us to think that we actually have free will. It helps make us believe that we have an underlying purpose in the world. It can even protect us from the paralyzing awareness of our own mortality. In other words, magical thinking is a completely irrational way of making our lives make rational sense.

With wonderfully entertaining stories, personal reflections, and sharp observations, Hutson reveals our deepest fears and longings. He also assures us that it is no accident his surname contains so many of the same letters as this imprint.

THE DEATH OF HOMO SAPIENS THE ACTION IRRATIONAL AS SOCIAL VALUE【電子書籍】[ CLEBERSON EDUARDO DA COSTA ]

1- copiar e reproduzir;

As desigualdades sociais, no Brasil, na ?frica e na Am?rica latina, desde os per?odos ditos p?s-coloniais, s? tem aumentado apesar dos ditos desenvolvimentos econ?micos, culturais e industriais;

Se sintam quase sempre “hiper-conscientes”, quando, na verdade, possu?dos por id?ias exteriores a eles pr?prios, culminando-se, atrav?s de etnocentrismos e xenofobismos, no desenvolvimento de posturas genocidas e/ou biocidas em escala planet?ria;

[1] KARL MARX ? Fil?sofo alem?o do s?c. XIX. Misbelief What Makes Rational People Believe Irrational Things【電子書籍】[ Dan Ariely ]

Misinformation affects us daily, from social media to politics and even personal relationships. Policing social media alone cannot solve the complex problem shaped by partisan politics and subjective interpretations of truth.

In Misbelief social scientist Dan Ariely explores the behaviour of 'misbelief' that leads people to distrust accepted truths and embrace conspiracy theories. Misinformation taps into something innate in all of us, regardless of political affiliation. By understanding this psychology, we can mitigate its effects. Grounded in research and Ariely's personal experience as a target of disinformation, the book analyses the psychological drivers behind adopting irrational beliefs. Ariely reveals the emotional, cognitive, personality, and social elements that drive people towards false information and mistrust.

Despite advanced AI generating convincing fake news, Ariely offers hope. Awareness of the forces fuelling misbelief makes individuals and society more resilient. Combating misbelief requires empathy, not conflict. Shadow Working in Project Management Understanding and Addressing the Irrational and Unconscious in Groups【電子書籍】[ Joana B?rtholo ]

Shadow Working in Project Management aims at contributing to our knowledge of all things unconscious and irrational in our behaviour. It takes the form of an empirical research, and therefore addresses mostly the tools and techniques available to get in touch with Shadow aspects of self and collective, to recognize how it manifests, how it can lead to conflict, and ways to address it.

From that perspective, it advances on to question the underlying beliefs of current management practices. It explores as well the inherent need for control in projects, being those of a professional nature, or other ventures. It challenges the strength of the concept of the "rational man" and its protagonism.

Joana B?rtholo’s work explores the role and nature of theShadow in the context of projects and their management, with an emphasis on techniques to address it. The Irrational Bundle Predictably Irrational, The Upside of Irrationality, and The Honest Truth About Dishonesty【電子書籍】[ Dr. Dan Ariely ]

“A lively tour through the impulses that cause many of us to cheat, the book offers especially keen insights into the ways in which we cut corners while still thinking of ourselves as moral people.” ー Time

Dan Ariely, behavioral economist and New York Times bestselling author of Predictably Irrational and The Upside of Irrationality, returns with a thought-provoking work that challenges our preconceptions about dishonesty and urges us to take an honest look at ourselves.

Does the chance of getting caught affect how likely we are to cheat?

How do companies pave the way for dishonesty?

Does collaboration make us more or less honest?

Does religion improve our honesty?

Most of us think of ourselves as honest, but, in fact, we all cheat. From Washington to Wall Street, the classroom to the workplace, unethical behavior is everywhere. None of us is immune, whether it's a white lie to head off trouble or padding our expense reports. In The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty, award-winning author Dan Ariely shows why some things are easier to lie about than others; how getting caught matters less than we think in whether we cheat; and how business practices pave the way for unethical behavior, both intentionally and unintentionally. Ariely explores how unethical behavior works in the personal, professional, and political worlds, and how it affects all of us, even as we think of ourselves as having high moral standards. But all is not lost. Ariely also identifies what keeps us honest, pointing the way for achieving higher ethics in our everyday lives.

With compelling personal and academic findings, The (Honest) Truth About Dishonesty will change the way we see ourselves, our actions, and others.

The Irrational Consumer Applying Behavioural Economics to Your Business Strategy【電子書籍】[ Enrico Trevisan ]

Companies of all kinds have fallen into some of the most fundamental of traps when it comes to consumer marketing; in assuming that the motivation that drives their customers is entirely rational. Enrico Trevisan's The Irrational Consumer builds on the ground breaking works on behavioural economics of authors such as Daniel Kahneman and Richard Thaler in order to explain the fundamental drivers of customer decisions and how to incorporate these into your business strategy. Learn how consumers respond to different offer architectures and discounts; why they sometimes struggle to see the wood for the trees in a world of ever-increasing options; what are the rules of thumb they develop for making sense of value. Behavioural economics offers organizations perspectives for engaging with customers, whose views on what to buy are strongly driven by contextual factors, such as the framework and the dynamics of choices. The Irrational Knot【電子書籍】[ George Bernard Shaw ]

The Irrational Knot was first published in 1905, having been written in 1880. Within a framework of leisure class preoccupations and frivolities Shaw disdains hereditary status and proclaims the nobility of workers. Marriage, as the knot in question, is exemplified by the union of Marian Lind, a lady of the upper class, to Edward Conolly, always a workman but now a magnate, thanks to his invention of an electric motor that makes steam engines obsolete. The marriage soon deteriorates, primarily because Marian fails to rise above the preconceptions and limitations of her social class and is, therefore, unable to share her husband's interests.

Medea and Sofia were problems for each other: respectively running about half of the immortal vampyr nation under the banner of Mathematikoi or Akousmatikoi, locked in mortal combat ever since the frustrated suicide of their love, the nation’s founder Zalmoxis. In cities around Europe, Medea and Sofia commanded forces reinventing slaughter in the streets.

Unfortunately for them, the mysterious threat known as The Reaper stalked vampyrs regardless of affiliation. The danger was at their backs during the June Mineriad in a tumultuous post-communist Romania, and both Medea and Sofia barely escaped the swing of the Reaper’s falx, shocked to learn the threat came from a single person. They desperately agreed to a truce on the Stari Most, trying to come to terms when the Reaper almost caught them again, revealed to be Pythagoras, who they believed died centuries before. Rational and Irrational Beliefs Research, Theory, and Clinical Practice【電子書籍】[ Daniel David ]

In Rational and Irrational Beliefs: Research, Theory, and Clinical Practice, leading scholars, researchers, and practitioners of rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) and other cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) share their perspectives and empirical findings on the nature of rational and irrational beliefs, the role of beliefs as mediators of functional and dysfunctional emotions and behaviors, and clinical approaches to modifying irrational beliefs, enhancing rational beliefs, and adaptive coping in the face of stressful life events. Offering a comprehensive and cohesive approach to understanding REBT/CBT and its central constructs of rational and irrational beliefs, contributors review a steadily accumulating empirical literature indicating that irrational beliefs are associated with a wide range of problems in living and that exposure to rational self-statements can decrease anxiety and other psychological symptoms, and play a valuable role in health promotion and disease prevention. Contributors also identify new frontiers of research and theory, including the link between irrational beliefs and other cognitive processes such as memory, psychophysiological responses, and evolutionary and cultural determinants of rational and irrational beliefs. A truly accessible, state-of-the-science summary of REBT/CBT research and clinical applications, Rational and Irrational Beliefs is an invaluable resource for psychotherapy practitioners of all theoretical orientations, as well as instructors, students, and academic psychologists.

Conspiracy Why the Rational Believe the Irrational【電子書籍】[ Michael Shermer ]

"A well-written and essential tool for those navigating today's complicated geopolitical landscape."ーLibrary Journal Best-selling author Michael Shermer presents an overarching theory of conspiracy theoriesーwho believes them and why, which ones are real, and what we should do about them.

Nothing happens by accident, everything is connected, and there are no coincidences: that is the essence of conspiratorial thinking. Long a fringe part of the American political landscape, conspiracy theories are now mainstream: 147 members of Congress voted in favor of objections to the 2020 presidential election based on an unproven theory about a rigged electoral process promoted by the mysterious group QAnon. But this is only the latest example in a long history of ideas that include the satanic panics of the 1980s, the New World Order and Vatican conspiracy theories, fears about fluoridated water, speculations about President John F. Kennedy's assassination, and the notions that the Sandy Hook massacre was a false-flag operation and 9/11 was an inside job.

In Conspiracy, Michael Shermer presents an overarching review of conspiracy theoriesーwho believes them and why, which ones are real, and what we should do about them. Trust in conspiracy theories, he writes, cuts across gender, age, race, income, education level, occupational statusーand even political affiliation. One reason that people believe these conspiracies, Shermer argues, is that enough of them are real that we should be constructively conspiratorial: elections have been rigged (LBJ's 1948 Senate race); medical professionals have intentionally harmed patients in their care (Tuskegee); your government does lie to you (Watergate, Iran-Contra, and Afghanistan); and, tragically, some adults do conspire to sexually abuse children. But Shermer reveals that other factors are also in play: anxiety and a sense of loss of control play a role in conspiratorial cognition patterns, as do certain personality traits.

This engaging book will be an important read for anyone concerned about the future direction of American politics, as well as anyone who's watched friends or family fall into patterns of conspiratorial thinking.
