Diese Frage stellte sich u. a. auch Alfred Graf von Schlieffen 2.000 Jahre sp?ter. Als Chef des preu?ischen Generalstabes von 1891 bis 1905 verstand er Cannae als erste 'vollkommene Vernichtungsschlacht'. Nach Schlieffen war eine Vernichtungsschlacht die einzige M?glichkeit, schnell und konsequent eine milit?rische Entscheidung herbeizuf?hren. Dieses Problem war in seiner Zeit f?r das Deutsche Reich umso dringlicher, als dass es sich in einer geopolitischen Umkreisung befand und somit im Kriegsfall, ohne eine schnelle und endg?ltige milit?rische Entscheidung herbeigerufen zu haben, zwangsl?ufig einem Mehrfrontenkrieg ausgesetzt sehen musste. Hinzu kamen ?berlegungen von Helmuth Graf von Moltke, in dessen Denktradition Schlieffen stand, der erkannt hatte, 'dass im Zeitalter der Massenheere und der beginnenden Industrialisierung wie niemals zuvor nicht allein strategische, sondern auch ?konomische und volkswirtschaftliche Gr?nde auf schnelle Beendigung von Kriegen dr?ngten.' Unter diesen Gesichtspunkten versuchte Schlieffen, Cannae zu analysieren und das Prinzip der Vernichtungsschlacht f?r zuk?nftige Kriege nutzbar zu machen. Letzt - endlich scheiterte dieser Versuch im Stellungskrieg des 1. Weltkrieges. Dennoch tauchten seine ?berlegungen in der Reichswehr und sp?ter im Offizierskorps der Wehrmacht wieder auf. Die vorliegende Hausarbeit will darstellen, wie sich das Ph?nomen Cannae - das Prinzip des Vernichtungssieges - von Schlieffen bis in die Schlachten des 2. Weltkrieges nachvollziehen l?sst. Zentraler Gegenstand ist die Schlacht von Cannae 216 v. Chr, die Schlieffen als den Prototypen einer Vernichtungsschlacht angesehen hatte.
