Examining Career Development in Jamaica and Australia Career Development Book Series, #3【電子書籍】[ Denise N. Fyffe ]

Like many other nations, Australia experienced social and economic transformation. They had to implement career development measures that would sustain the progress needed because their way of life was being threatened by the international crisis happening around them. To do this Australia utilized mediums that would successfully create new programs, services, schemes, and benefits. At present in Jamaica, many of the graduates of secondary institutions enter the job market ill equipped to access the opportunities available to them. For some, there is inadequate basic academic preparation; for most, there is inadequate career education. The world of work has grown very complex and numerous career options are open to students. Educational decisions made rather early in the school life of students, will have a decisive influence on their access to careers of choice later on. It is important that career awareness, career exploration and career preparation activities be incorporated into their early education.

The Plantation Machine Atlantic Capitalism in French Saint-Domingue and British Jamaica【電子書籍】[ Trevor Burnard ]

Jamaica and Saint-Domingue were especially brutal but conspicuously successful eighteenth-century slave societies and imperial colonies. These plantation regimes were, to adopt a metaphor of the era, complex "machines," finely tuned over time by planters, merchants, and officials to become more efficient at exploiting their enslaved workers and serving their empires. Using a wide range of archival evidence, The Plantation Machine traces a critical half-century in the development of the social, economic, and political frameworks that made these societies possible. Trevor Burnard and John Garrigus find deep and unexpected similarities in these two prize colonies of empires that fought each other throughout the period. Jamaica and Saint-Domingue experienced, at nearly the same moment, a bitter feud between planters and governors, a violent conflict between masters and enslaved workers, a fateful tightening of racial laws, a steady expansion of the slave trade, and metropolitan criticism of planters' cruelty.

The core of The Plantation Machine addresses the Seven Years' War and its aftermath. The events of that period, notably a slave poisoning scare in Saint-Domingue and a near-simultaneous slave revolt in Jamaica, cemented white dominance in both colonies. Burnard and Garrigus argue that local political concerns, not emerging racial ideologies, explain the rise of distinctive forms of racism in these two societies. The American Revolution provided another imperial crisis for the beneficiaries of the plantation machine, but by the 1780s whites in each place were prospering as never beforeーand blacks were suffering in new and disturbing ways. The result was that Jamaica and Saint-Domingue became vitally important parts of the late eighteenth-century American empires of Britain and France.

Remembering Our Intimacies Mo'olelo, Aloha 'Aina, and Ea【電子書籍】[ Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio ]

Recovering K?naka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) relationality and belonging in the land, memory, and body of Native Hawai’i

Hawaiian “aloha ??ina” is often described in Western political termsーnationalism, nationhood, even patriotism. In Remembering Our Intimacies, Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio centers in on the personal and embodied articulations of aloha ??ina to detangle it from the effects of colonialism and occupation. Working at the intersections of Hawaiian knowledge, Indigenous queer theory, and Indigenous feminisms, Remembering Our Intimacies seeks to recuperate Native Hawaiian concepts and ethics around relationality, desire, and belonging firmly grounded in the land, memory, and the body of Native Hawai’i.

Remembering Our Intimacies argues for the methodology of (re)membering Indigenous forms of intimacies. It does so through the metaphor of a ‘upenaーa net of intimacies that incorporates the variety of relationships that exist for K?naka Maoli. It uses a close reading of the mo?olelo (history and literature) of Hi?iakaikapoliopele to provide context and interpretation of Hawaiian intimacy and desire by describing its significance in K?naka Maoli epistemology and why this matters profoundly for Hawaiian (and other Indigenous) futures.

Offering a new approach to understanding one of Native Hawaiians’ most significant values, Remembering Our Intimacies reveals the relationships between the policing of Indigenous bodies, intimacies, and desires; the disembodiment of Indigenous modes of governance; and the ongoing and ensuing displacement of Indigenous people.

Punishing the Black Body Marking Social and Racial Structures in Barbados and Jamaica【電子書籍】[ Dawn P. Harris ]

Punishing the Black Body examines the punitive and disciplinary technologies and ideologies embraced by ruling white elites in nineteenth-century Barbados and Jamaica. Among studies of the Caribbean on similar topics, this is the first to look at the meanings inscribed on the raced, gendered, and classed bodies on the receiving end of punishment. Dawn P. Harris uses theories of the body to detail the ways colonial states and their agents appropriated physicality to debase the black body, assert the inviolability of the white body, and demarcate the social boundaries between them.

Noting marked demographic and geographic differences between Jamaica and Barbados, as well as any number of changes within the separate economic, political, and social trajectories of each island, Harris still finds that societal infractions by the subaltern populations of both islands brought on draconian forms of punishments aimed at maintaining the socio-racial hierarchy. Her investigation ranges across such topics as hair-cropping, the 1836 Emigration Act of Barbados and other punitive legislation, the state reprisals following the 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion in Jamaica, the use of the whip and the treadmill in jails and houses of correction, and methods of surveillance, policing, and limiting free movement. By focusing on meanings ascribed to the disciplined and punished body, Harris reminds us that the transitions between slavery, apprenticeship, and post-emancipation were not just a series of abstract phenomena signaling shifts in the prevailing order of things. For a large part of these islands’ populations, these times of dramatic change were physically felt.

This book deals with the history of Jamaica.

"Studies in Jamaica arch?ology and history naturally fall into three main groups: Aboriginal, Spanish and English. Though, owing to the high form of civilization there attained, research has in Egypt revealed very full information concerning the condition of life in the Nile valley thousands of years before the Christian era, it has hitherto told us very little about the aborigines who inhabited Jamaica a little more than 400 years ago. How long they had been here when Columbus discovered the island no one can say for certain, though the thickness and extent of their middens, some thirty of which have been opened from time to time, offer evidence of value."

Popular Medicinal Plants in Portland and Kingston, Jamaica【電子書籍】[ Ina Vandebroek ]

This book highlights the results from over a year of ethnobotanical research in a rural and an urban community in Jamaica, where we interviewed more than 100 people who use medicinal plants for healthcare. The goal of this research was to better understand patterns of medicinal plant knowledge, and to find out which plants are used in consensus by local people for a variety of illnesses.

For this book, we selected 25 popular medicinal plant species mentioned during fieldwork. Through individual interviews, we were able to rank plants according to their frequency of mention, and categorized the medicinal uses for each species as “major” (mentioned by more than 20% of people in a community) or “minor” (mentioned by more than 5%, but less than 20% of people). Botanical identification of plant specimens collected in the wild allowed for cross-linking of common and scientific plant names.

To supplement field research, we undertook a comprehensive search and review of the ethnobotanical and biomedical literature. Our book summarizes all this information in detail under specific sub-headings.

Cultural Economy and Television in Jamaica and Ghana #decolonization2point0【電子書籍】[ Deborah Hickling Gordon ]

This book proposes contemporary decolonization as an approach to developing cultural economies in the Global South. It presents the account of the transformation of television in Jamaica and Ghana to audiovisual subsectors; from cultural institutions to cultural industries and then subsectors of emerging cultural economies as representative case studies. ‘Glocal’ changes are presented within five organizing phenomena: philosophical, ideological, and economic change, and their impact on governance and the operational transformation of the television sectors of Jamaica and Ghana. This book represents the first critical examination and comparison of cultural and creative industries (CCI) and economy concepts in the Caribbean and Africa. It is an original contribution to the development of strategies that influence processes, structures, and policies related to the cultural economy concept and those required to improve television industries. This process of describing culturally specific characteristics of CCI is designed to be applicable to the CCI of developing countries including those in Africa and the Caribbean, where interpretations and implementation suited for advanced industrial nations have been insufficiently questioned and challenged.

Jamaica in the 21st Century Revisiting the First Decade【電子書籍】[ Livingstone Thompson ]

When we forget, we run the risk of reinventing the wheel. Jamaica in the 21st Century: Revisiting the 1st Decade is a challenge and a reminder, lest we forget what ground has been covered in Jamaica’s social, political and religious life, particularly at the onset of the 21st century. Trawling through public discourse and debates in Jamaica, the book distills and surfaces the main issues that captured the attention of the public: gambling, homosexuality and human sexuality, education, crime, violence, the church and politics, to name a few. Many of the issues that preoccupy us at this time are issues that have been addressed before. It might be of use to familiarise ourselves with the earlier discussion. This book then is a sort of archaeological and socio-historical enterprise, designed to aid memory and, if possible, to help us see the progress we have made and avoid reinvention of the wheel.

An Ethnography of Football and Masculinities in Jamaica Letting the Football Talk【電子書籍】[ Dr William Tantam ]

What can football among young men in Jamaica tell us about class, wealth, age, and concepts of masculinity? William Tantam presents an ethnographic study of the impact of football on men's lives in contemporary Jamaica. He illuminates how the football field relates to social and economic inequalities, and whether playing football in a mixed group has the effect of levelling the playing field between the more and less economically wealthy.

Tantam presents insights into the life histories and football biographies of individuals, the relationship between wealth, education, and class, and explores how socioeconomic inequalities are embodied and enacted. With rich ethnographic detail, he analyses how the experience of watching international football matches and the English Premier League locates groups of spectators in relation to wider movements of capital.

The book features case studies of individuals who play football in Jamaica, and penetrates an under-examined area in academic discussion of sport and masculinity. This will be a valuable addition to students of anthropology, sociology, football studies, cultural studies and gender studies.

The Health Workforce in Latin America and the Caribbean An Analysis of Colombia, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay【電子書籍】[ Carmen Carpio ]

The health workforce is the foundation of care and affects quality and outcomes; human resources for health (HRH) constitutes the largest portion of the health care budget of most countries. Latin America and the Caribbean has been challenged by imbalances in workforce composition, distribution, and skill mix, as well as by variations in productivity and quality. The Health Workforce in Latin America and the Caribbean: An Analysis of Colombia, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay provides an update on HRH in these six countries. The discussion is structured around five key areas of the workforce: financing, organization, management, regulation, and performance. ?? Financing: The authors present the variety of contracting mechanisms, salary levels, and financial incentives, and their roles in attracting and retaining health workers. ?? Organization: The countries have made progress toward achieving HRH targets and making education more accessible. However, the absorption capacity remains limited for graduates, the primary health care focus of training programs needs to be strengthened, and the strategies to encourage rural service have not effectively addressed the distribution gap of health workers. ?? Management: All six countries have adopted the World Health Organization's Global Code of Practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel to recognize foreign-trained professionals to help address shortages and fill gaps in rural and remote areas. However, the countries continue to struggle with implementing self-sufficiency policies to build the capacity to meet needs. Such policies include promotion plans, nonmonetary incentives, and personnel for recruitment and eventual placement. ?? Regulation: The countries are working to reduce precarious and unprotected employment, introduce safety policies to decrease occupational diseases and workplace accidents, and enact legislation to resolve disputes. ?? Performance: Mixed results have been achieved in health outcomes, access and availability, quality of care and patient satisfaction, professional practice, and productivity and efficiency.

Annie John A Novel【電子書籍】[ Jamaica Kincaid ]

The essential coming-of-age novel by Jamaica Kincaid, Annie John is a haunting and provocative story of a young girl growing up on the island of Antigua. Kincaid's novel focuses on a universal, tragic, and often comic theme: the loss of childhood. Annie's voiceーurgent, demanding to be heardーis one that will not soon be forgotten by readers.

An adored only child, Annie has until recently lived an idyllic life. She is inseparable from her beautiful mother, a powerful presence, who is the very center of the little girl's existence. Loved and cherished, Annie grows and thrives within her mother's benign shadow. Looking back on her childhood, she reflects, "It was in such a paradise that I lived."

When she turns twelve, however, Annie's life changes, in ways that are often mysterious to her. She begins to question the cultural assumptions of her island world; at school she instinctively rebels against authority; and most frighteningly, her mother, seeing Annie as a "young lady," ceases to be the source of unconditional adoration and takes on the new and unfamiliar guise of adversary.

At the end of her school years, Annie decides to leave Antigua and her family, but not without a measure of sorrow, especially for the mother she once knew and never ceases to mourn. "For I could not be sure," she reflects, "whether for the rest of my life I would be able to tell when it was really my mother and when it was really her shadow standing between me and the rest of the world."

Journal of a West India Proprietor Enriched edition. Kept During a Residence in the Island of Jamaica【電子書籍】[ M. G. Lewis ]

In "Journal of a West India Proprietor," M. G. Lewis offers a compelling and vivid chronicle of his experiences managing a sugar plantation in the Caribbean during the early 19th century. The text is rich in observational detail, blending elements of travel writing with the introspective reflections of a landowner deeply engaged in the socio-economic complexities of colonialism. Lewis's literary style is both engaging and critical; through his personal narratives and keen insights, he sheds light on the ethical dilemmas faced by plantation proprietors amidst the backdrop of emerging abolitionist sentiments in Britain. His work serves as an invaluable primary source that captures the tensions between economic ambition and moral consciousness of the era. Lewis himself was a contemporary of the Romantic period, having been born in 1775, and his experiences may have been shaped by the prevailing debates around colonialism and human rights. His intimate knowledge of the West Indies, combined with his engagement with British society, allowed him to portray a multi-faceted picture of plantation life, encompassing both the allure of wealth and the realities of exploitation. This duality reflects broader themes of the British colonial experience, making his account particularly significant in literary and historical studies. "Journal of a West India Proprietor" is essential reading for anyone interested in colonial literature, social history, or the ethical concerns surrounding plantation economies. It invites readers to grapple with the complexities of moral responsibility within an imperial framework, making it a thought-provoking contribution to both literary scholarship and discussions on colonial legacy.
Jamaica Kincaid's At the Bottom of the River... inspired, lyrical short stories
Reading Jamaica Kincaid is to plunge, gently, into another way of seeing both the physical world and its elusive inhabitants. Her voice is, by turns, naively whimsical and biblical in its assurance, and it speaks of what is partially remembered partly divined. The memories often concern a childhood in the Caribbean--family, manners, and landscape--as distilled and transformed by Kincaid's special style and vision.
Kincaid leads her readers to consider, as if for the first time, the powerful ties between mother and child; the beauty and destructiveness of nature; the gulf between the masculine and the feminine; the significance of familiar things--a house, a cup, a pen. Transfiguring our human form and our surroundings--shedding skin, darkening an afternoon, painting a perfect place--these stories tell us something we didn't know, in a way we hadn't expected.

Energy Poverty Among Women in Jamaica’s Low-Income Communities【電子書籍】[ Shinique Walters ]

This Palgrave Pivot investigates energy poverty in Jamaica, which is a growing problem that affects the mental, physical, and financial health of individuals, families, and communities, and its specific impact on women. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, this study demonstrates the shared relationship between energy development and economic development. It argues that the development of the energy sector has not been a gender-neutral process and has evolved and transitioned within the context of the global political economy, which has been irrevocably shaped and impacted by the lack of government regulation, an increase in efforts at privatization, and the effects of liberalization in terms of the development. Specifically, it shows that more often than not women bear the burden of sourcing, collecting, and using energy for household activities, agriculture, and income-generating tasks. As such, women are affected by energy poverty in many ways, including but not limited to time burdens and drudgery, health issues and physical burdens, as well as the issues that arise due to restrictions on information. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in gender studies, global development, economics, and politics, as well as policymakers and activists dedicated to gender equality and energy justice.

Decolonization of Psychiatry in Jamaica Madnificent Irations【電子書籍】[ Frederick W. Hickling ]

This book traces the historical postcolonial journey of four generations of Jamaican psychiatrists challenging the European colonial ‘civilizing mission’ of psychiatric care. It details the process of deinstitutionizing patients with chronic mental illness using psychohistoriographic cultural therapy, by engaging them in creating sociodrama and poetry writing, not only to express and reverse the stigma contributing to their marginalized status, but also to reconnect them to a centuries-long history of oppression. The author thereby demonstrates that psychological decolonization requires a seminal understanding of the complex mental inter-relationship between slaves and slaveowners. Further, it is shown how the model analyzes the antipodal dialectic history of descendants of Africans enslaved in the New World by brutish British Imperialists suffering from the European psychosis of white supremacy.

Drawing together a detailed description of the sociopoem MadnificentIrations, with an examination of Jamaica’s political and social history, and the author’s personal experience, this compelling work marks an important contribution to decolonial literature. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of postcolonial studies, critical race theory, the history of psychology and community psychology.

Architecture and Empire in Jamaica【電子書籍】[ Louis Nelson ]

Through Creole houses and merchant stores to sugar fields and boiling houses, Jamaica played a leading role in the formation of both the early modern Atlantic world and the British Empire. Architecture and Empire in Jamaica offers the first scholarly analysis of Jamaican architecture in the long 18th century, spanning roughly from the Port Royal earthquake of 1692 to Emancipation in 1838. In this richly illustrated study, which includes hundreds of the author’s own photographs and drawings, Louis P. Nelson examines surviving buildings and archival records to write a social history of architecture.
?
Nelson begins with an overview of the architecture of the West African slave trade then moves to chapters framed around types of buildings and landscapes, including the Jamaican plantation landscape and fortified houses to the architecture of free blacks. He concludes with a consideration of Jamaican architecture in Britain. By connecting the architecture of the Caribbean first to West Africa and then to Britain, Nelson traces the flow of capital and makes explicit the material, economic, and political networks around the Atlantic.?
?
