Accounting, Capitalism and the Revealed Religions A Study of Christianity, Judaism and Islam【電子書籍】[ Vassili Joannid?s de Lautour ]
|

This book analyses the bearing of global monotheistic faiths towards the philosophy and practice of record keeping and accounting throughout history. The author offers a comprehensive discussion of the literal and figurative processes of taking account and ascribing accountability that link religions such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Chapters address theology and accounting in tandem with social behaviours to demonstrate how auditing and calculating customs permeate practising religions. This book first highlights how the four monotheisms have viewed and incorporated accounting historically, and then looks forward to the accounting debates, technologies and traditions in today’s world that derive from these religious customs. Drawing heavily on the writings of Max Weber and Werner Sombart, the author demonstrates that accounting and capitalism have religious roots far beyond the Protestant ethic.

Gonzo Judaism A Bold Path for Renewing an Ancient Faith【電子書籍】[ Rabbi Niles Elliot Goldstein ]
|

Here is a book that is both clarion call for a new Jewish agenda and a blueprint for an adventurous but genuine path toward spiritual growth and religious wisdom. Rabbi Niles Elliot Goldstein, founder and Rabbi Emeritus of The New Shul in New York City, says that most conventional Jewish institutions are out-of-touch and have relied too much on nostalgia, guilt, and fearーnone of which resonate with modern Jews. He challenges Jews to adopt the "gonzo" spiritーthe rebellious, risk-taking attitude associated with the gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompsonーand to take creative, innovative steps to reshape and revitalize contemporary Judaism.

Goldstein urges readers to take a fresh look at Judaism, to become educated about its history and tradition, to discover what is authentic, yet what also feels spiritually relevant and meaningful, and to create a Jewish culture and community rooted in affirmation, joy, and celebration. He provides a wealth of information on numerous organizations, institutions, synagogues, grassroots groups, and networks that can help get you started on the gonzo path.

To learn more about the author, visit his website at www.nilesgoldstein.com.

This book answers the following questions: Whish religions or which groups of related religions are most consistent with the truth? What unites followers of all humanistic religions? Is there life after death? What options for a future afterlife may be true, and what are a clear delusion? What is the most convincing evidence of God's existence? What was the mission of Jesus Christ? A number of new potential unifying religions and complete table of all existing and potentially possible humanistic religions are proposed. It is shown which of them can most likely correspond the truth. A rationale is given for the new unifying religions of New Judaism, Bibleism and Newarism. A new religion, Karmaism, is proposed, and on its basis - the United Religion that unites all humanistic religions. They speak out of inevitable punishment for violations of moral norms. An explanation is given for what is considered bad behavior, not only in personal life, but also in politics, using the examples of the situations in America and Israel. A United Philosophy also proposed.

The Spirit within Me Self and Agency in Ancient Israel and Second Temple Judaism【電子書籍】[ Carol A. Newsom ]
|

The first full-length study of the evolution of self and agency in ancient Israelite anthropology

Conceptions of “the self” have received significant recent attention in philosophy, anthropology, and cultural history. Scholars argue that the introspective self of the modern West is a distinctive phenomenon that cannot be projected back onto the cultures of antiquity. While acknowledging such difference is vital, it can lead to an inaccurate flattening of the ancient self.

In this study, Carol A. Newsom explores the assumptions that govern ancient Israelite views of the self and its moral agency before the fall of Judah, as well as striking developments during the Second Temple period. She demonstrates how the collective trauma of the destruction of the Temple catalyzed changes in the experience of the self in Israelite literature, including first?person-singular prayers, notions of self?alienation, and emerging understandings of a defective heart and will. Examining novel forms of spirituality as well as sectarian texts, Newsom chronicles the evolving inward gaze in ancient Israelite literature, unveiling how introspection in Second Temple Judaism both parallels and differs from forms of introspective selfhood in Greco?Roman cultures.

Judaism and World Order【電子書籍】[ Hugh J. Schonfield ]

Originally published in 1943, this book provides both valuable insights into the problems confronting Judaism at the end of the Second World War but also a solution towards peace for mankind in general.

The books covers such subjects as why anything Jewish has suffered so much hatred which caused even a hatred of Christianity and the democratic way of life.

This is pertinent to the situation between Christians, Jews and Moslems today.

The book is an appeal for the building of a 'Dienstvolk' as the only alternative to a 'Herrenvolk'. There may be lessons here also for the modern State of Israel which since then has become a fact and the dilemma of a people which are actually called as messengers of peace.

Society, the Sacred and Scripture in Ancient Judaism A Sociology of Knowledge【電子書籍】[ Jack N. Lightstone ]
|

This work explores the relationship between religion, social patterns, and the perception of the character of scripture in four modes of Ancient Judaism: (1) the Jerusalem community of the fifth to fourth centuries B.C.E. (ie, the Early Second Temple Period); (2) the Judaism of the Graeco-Roman Disapora down to the end of the fourth century of the Christian Era; (3) earliest rabbinic Judaism in the second century C.E> in the land of Israel; (4) Late Antique Talmudic Rabbinism, primarily inn Babylonia, down to the sixth century of the Christian Era. Lightstone attempts not only to describe these perceptions and relationships but also to account for them, to explore why scripture should be thus perceived. His imaginative approach to the challenging descriptive and theoretical tasks is influenced by literary and form-critical methods as well as by the methods and perspectives of social anthropology and sociology of the mind.

This unique attempts at revising the perception of the character of scripture should arouse the interest of scholars and students of Ancient Judaism.

A spiritual memoir by the author of God Is a Verb.

"This book is a treasure map, but not like any you have seen before. Most people believe that the object of a treasure hunt is to find a chest of gold. The mystical approach, however, is that the search itself is the treasure…. Here is an invitation to begin an exploration of the treasure fields of your own mind…the most exciting and rewarding adventure you will ever take."
ーfrom the Introduction

Here is an insider’s look at a spectrum of mystical traditionsーby someone who is remarkably fluent in the language of each. Three Gates to Meditation Practicechronicles more than fifteen years in the spiritual journey of "post-denominational" Rabbi David A. Cooper and his wife Shoshanaーyears that led the Coopers everywhere from a secluded mountain hut in New Mexico to the Sinai desert, from chanting Sufi dhikr and meditation with Buddhist masters to studying Kabbalah and esoteric Judaism in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The Coopers’ story is an intimate account of what intensive spiritual practice is like, with an ultimate message that is supremely inspiring: The spiritual path is completely within our reach, whoever we are, whatever we do, as long as we are willing to try.

Jewish on Their Own Terms How Intermarried Couples are Changing American Judaism【電子書籍】[ Jennifer A. Thompson ]
|

Over half of all American Jewish children are being raised by intermarried parents. This demographic group will have a tremendous impact on American Judaism as it is lived and practiced in the coming decades. To date, however, in both academic studies about Judaism and in the popular imagination, such children and their parents remain marginal.

Jennifer A. Thompson takes a different approach. In Jewish on Their Own Terms, she tells the stories of intermarried couples, the rabbis and other Jewish educators who work with them, and the conflicting public conversations about intermarriage among American Jews. Thompson notes that in the dominant Jewish cultural narrative, intermarriage symbolizes individualism and assimilation. Talking about intermarriage allows American Jews to discuss their anxieties about remaining distinctively Jewish despite their success in assimilating into American culture.

In contrast, Thompson uses ethnography to describe the compelling concerns of all of these parties and places their anxieties firmly within the context of American religious culture and morality. She explains how American and traditional Jewish gender roles converge to put non-Jewish women in charge of raising Jewish children. Interfaith couples are like other Americans in often harboring contradictory notions of individual autonomy, universal religious truths, and obligations to family and history.

Focusing on the lived experiences of these families, Jewish on Their Own**Terms provides a complex and insightful portrait of intermarried couples and the new forms of American Judaism that they are constructing.

Historical Dictionary of Judaism【電子書籍】[ Norman Solomon ]
|

What we now call “Judaism” is the religion of the rabbis; it is rooted in scripture-the Hebrew Scriptures-but it is not to be identified with Old Testament theology. Judaism in its many manifestations has continued to evolve, rereading its ancient texts and extracting new meaning, while addressing contemporary issues such as the status of women and attitudes to sexual orientation. History, or rather our perception of it, has changed substantially. Previously unknown documents and artefacts have surfaced, while scholars have proposed far-reaching changes to the way we read and evaluate ancient texts. Nowadays, we have a more nuanced understanding of how to evaluate statements in the Talmud and other rabbinic writings, and we are better able to contextualize them not only in Greco-Roman antiquity but also in the Sasanian environment in which the Babylonian Talmud was formed.

Historical Dictionary of Judaism, Fourth Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 800 cross-referenced entries on on important personalities in Jewish religious history, including biblical personalities with an emphasis on how they are understood in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic tradition. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Judaism.

To Be a Jewish State Zionism as the New Judaism【電子書籍】[ Yaacov Yadgar ]
|

Questions what it means for Israel to be a Jewish state

In one of the first books to ask head-on what it means for Israel to be a Jewish state, Yaacov Yadgar delves into what the designation “Jewish” amounts to in the context of the sovereign nation-state, and what it means for the politics of the state to be identified as Jewish. The volume interrogates the tension between the notion of Israel as a Jewish stateーone whose very character is informed by Judaismーand the notion of Israel as a “state of the Jews,” with the sole criterion the maintenance of a demographically Jewish majority, whatever the character of that majority’s Jewishness might or might not be.

The volume also examines Zionism’s relationship to Judaism. It provocatively questions whether the Christian notion of supersessionism, the idea that the Christian Church has superseded the nation of Israel in God’s eyes and that Christians are now the true People of God, may now be applied to Zionism, with Zionism understood by some to have taken over the place of traditional Judaism, rendering the actual Jewish religion superfluous.

To Be a Jewish State deeply informs the democratic crisis in Israel, discussing whether Jewish laws put into effect by the state or political moves made to ensure a Jewish majority can be seen as undermining democracy. In our current era, with nationalism resurging, To Be a Jewish State urges a critical re-assessment of the very meaning of modern Jewish identity.

The Hebrew Bible, Nationalism and the Origins of Anti-Judaism A New Interpretation and Poetic Anthology【電子書籍】[ David Aberbach ]
|

In the attempts to unify divided peoples on the basis of a shared past, both historical and mythical, this book illumines aspects of cultural nationalism common since the Middle Ages.

As an edited work, the Bible includes texts mostly depicting long-gone historical eras extending over several centuries. Following on from Aberbach’s previous work National Poetry, Empires, and War, this book argues that works of this nature ? notably the Mujo-Halil songs in Albania, the Irish stories of Cuchulain, the songs of the Nibelungen in Germany, or the Finnish legends collected in The Kalevala ? have an ancient precedent in the Hebrew Bible (to which national literatures often allude and refer), a subject largely neglected in biblical studies. The self-critical element in the Hebrew Bible, common in later national literature, is examined as the basis of later anti-Semitism, as the Bible was not confined to Jews but was adopted in translation by many other national groups. With several dozen original translations from the Hebrew, this book highlights how the Bible influenced and was distorted by later national cultures.

Written without jargon, this book is intended for the general reader, but is also an important contribution to the study of the Bible, nationalism, and Jewish history.

Reading Paul within Judaism Collected Essays of Mark D. Nanos, vol.
|

The dominant portrayals of the apostle Paul are of a figure who no longer valued Jewish identity and behavior, opposing them for both Jew and non-Jew in his assemblies. This prevailing version of Paul depends heavily upon certain interpretations of key "flashpoint" passages. In this book and the subsequent volumes in this series, Mark Nanos undertakes to test a "Paul within Judaism" (re)reading of the apostle, especially of these "flashpoint" texts. Nanos demonstrates how traditional conclusions about Paul and the meaning of his letters are dramatically altered by testing the hypothesis that the historical Paul practiced a Jewish, Torah-observant way of life, and that he expected those whom he addressed to know that he did so. Nanos also tests the hypothesis that the non-Jews addressed were expected to know that his guidance was based on promoting a Jewish way of life for themselves, at the same time insisting that they remain non-Jews and thus not technically under Torah on the same terms as himself and the other Jews in this new (Jewish) movement. In conversation with the prevailing views, Nanos argues that the "Paul within Judaism" perspective offers not only more historically probable interpretations of Paul's texts, but also more promise for better relations between Christians and Jews, because these texts have informed Christian concepts of, ways of talking about, and behavior toward Jews based on the premise that Paul considered Jews and Judaism the mirror opposites of what Christians should be and become.

Why did the Jewish people become a source of endless irritation to those who opposed their ethical teachings? and How can the State of Israel rediscover its Jewish identity as the source of its greatest blessing and hope? As he explores these issues, Lopes Cardozo explains how the Jews, even in their exile, were able to develop almost a portable homeland, taking the spirit and the concept of Israel with them wherever they went.

|

In September 2002, twenty-one prominent Catholic and Protestant scholars released the groundbreaking document 'A Sacred Obligation,' which includes ten statements about Jewish-Christian dialogue focused around a guiding claim: 'Revising Christian teaching about Judaism and the Jewish people is a central and indispensable obligation of theology in our time.' Following the worldwide reception of their document, the authors have expanded their themes into Seeing Judaism Anew. The essays in this volume offer a conceptual framework by which Christians can rethink their understanding of the church's relationship to Judaism and show how essential it is that Christians represent Judaism accurately, not only as a matter of justice for the Jewish people, but also for the integrity of Christian faith. By linking New Testament scholarship to the Shoah, Christian liturgical life, and developments in the church, this volume addresses the important questions at the heart of Christian identity, such as: Are only Christians saved? Why did Jesus die? Why is Israel so important to Jews, and what should we think about the conflict in the Middle East? How is Christianity complicit in the Holocaust? What is important about Jesus being a Jew?

Absent Mother God of the West A Kali Lover's Journey into Christianity and Judaism【電子書籍】[ Neela Bhattacharya Saxena ]
|

This book about the missing Divine Feminine in Christianity and Judaism chronicles a personal as well as an academic quest of an Indian woman who grew up with Kali and myriad other goddesses. It is born out of a women's studies course created and taught by the author called The Goddess in World Religions. The book examines how the Divine Feminine was erased from the western consciousness and how it led to an exclusive spiritually patriarchal monotheism with serious consequences for both women’s and men’s psychological and spiritual identity. While colonial, proselytizing and patriarchal ways have denied the divinity inherent in the female of the species, a recent upsurge of body-centric practices like Yoga and innumerable books about old and new goddesses reveal a deep seated mother hunger in the western consciousness. Written from a practicing Hindu/Buddhist perspective, this book looks at the curious phenomenon called the Black Madonna that appears in Europe and also examines mystical figures like Shekhinah in Jewish mysticism. People interested in symbols of the goddess, feminist theologians, and scholars interested in the absence of goddesses in monotheisms may find this book’s perspective and insights provocative.

Perceptions abound, downright lies are spread and even the truth is suppressed both good and bad and all in the name of God. From the Christian Crusades to the 500 years of the SPANISH Inquisition, from the scourge of the sword of Islam as it spread form the borders of Southwest Asia, to today’s Islamic terrorist, and from the pogroms of Russia and the final solution of the Nazi Endlosung, the three great religions have suffered at the hands of Satan and his demon hordes. The Basic Beliefs of Judaism A Twenty-first-Century Guide to a Timeless Tradition【電子書籍】[ Lawrence J. Epstein ]
|

One of the oldest monotheistic religions known to humankind, Judaism has withstood the tests of time. So what exactly are the tenets of this ancient faith that have been passed down over the millennia, and how do they apply to our lives in the 21st century? The Basic Beliefs of Judaism gives an updated overview of the belief system on which the Jewish faith is based. Epstein takes a contemporary point of view, looking at how the basic beliefs of Judaism fit into the lives of modern Jews. He does this with an eye toward helping the reader form his/her own understanding of Judaism. The book touches upon beliefs relating to creation, God, and the cosmos, as well as beliefs relating to day-to-day issues of family relations, social interactions, and ethics. Epstein draws from the Torah, the Talmud, Jewish folklore, and Jewish history to give the reader an understanding of how these beliefs were formed and have continued to evolve.

Postmissionary Messianic Judaism Redefining Christian Engagement with the Jewish People【電子書籍】[ Mark Kinzer ]

In recent years, a new form of Messianic Judaism has emerged that has the potential to serve as a bridge between Jews and Christians. Giving voice to this movement, Mark Kinzer makes a case for nonsupersessionist Christianity. He argues that the election of Israel is irrevocable, that Messianic Jews should honor the covenantal obligations of Israel, and that rabbinic Judaism should be viewed as a movement employed by God to preserve the distinctive calling of the Jewish people.

Though this book will be of interest to Jewish readers, it is written primarily for Christians who recognize the need for a constructive relationship to the Jewish people that neither denies the role of Jesus the Messiah nor diminishes the importance of God's covenant with the Jews.

Jewish Science Diving Healing in Judaism【電子書籍】[ Alfred Geiger Moses ]

Thousands of American Jews were drawn to Christian Science and other New Thought teachings at the turn of the 20th century along with countless Christians. The growing popularity of New Thought teachings among American Jews concerned Jewish leaders of the time, including American Reform Rabbi Alfred Geiger Moses, who decided to do something about it. Seeing much in New Thought teachings that could be adapted to Judaism, once stripped of its Christian elements, Rabbi Moses first published Jewish Science in 1916. The author spends much time showing that the precepts of Christian Science and other New Thought denominations are drawn largely from the Hebrew scriptures.

This newly designed and edited edition includes an extensive anthology of Hebrew scripture quotations from a New Thought perspective, and a new introduction by the editor.

Alfred Geiger Moses (1878-1956) was the rabbi of the American Reform Congregation of the Gates of Heaven and Society for the Needy from 1901 to 1940, in Mobile, Alabama. His interest in divine healing likely stemmed from the physical and mental problems from which he long suffered. Rabbi Moses passed away in a state mental health institution in 1956.

William F. Shannon is the Publisher and Editor of Hudson Mohawk Press. Orthodox Liturgy and Anti-Judaism【電子書籍】[ Berthold Schwarz ]
|

Anti-Jewish sentiment in the Orthodox liturgy was and still is one of the main stumbling blocks for the Jewish?Orthodox Christian encounter. In the last five decades, this subject has often been mentioned during official dialogues between the two religious communities, but very few concrete steps have been made in academic or religious contexts on either side. This volume offers a selected anthology of contributions delivered at the conference "Byzantine Liturgy and the Jews", held in Sibiu in 2019. The collection covers the post-Byzantine, modern and contemporary periods of the Orthodox liturgy, considering both liturgical texts and artifacts. The work explores the reverberations of the much-debated anti-Jewish elements into the twentieth century and their reception by present-day believers. This volume intends to foster a more in-depth discussion on this subject within the academic context and to offer a foundation for further debates involving the religious institutions.

This book sets out new theoretical foundations for Jewish social justice education by surveying and discussing Freirean critical pedagogy, Catholic models of social justice education, Jewish social justice literature and interviews with educators and activists.

Jewish social justice education is an active and growing field, encompassing a diverse range of issues including the treatment of refugees, environmental justice, human rights, peace and justice in Israel/Palestine, gender equality, and LGBT+ inclusion. Yet Jewish social justice education remains an under-researched and under-theorized phenomenon. This lacuna has practical implications for the thousands of educators and activists across the world who are attempting to achieve social justice ends through the medium of Jewish education. In discussing the key philosophical, political and educational issues that emerge when discussing these topics, the author draws on thinkers including Hannah Arendt, Martin Buber, Alasdair MacIntyre and Jonathan Sacks. Matt Plen proposes three possible directions for a normative theory of Jewish social justice education: 'Jewish politics in a renewed public sphere', 'Jewish education for relational community building' and 'Jewish critical pedagogy for cultural emancipation'.
