The Prophet with The Forerunner and The Madman【電子書籍】[ Kahlil Gibran ]

This essential trilogy gathers Kahlil Gibran’s The Madman (1918), The Forerunner (1920), and his masterpiece, The Prophet (1923). Together these works compound the mesmerizing, heart-haunting effects that have made The Prophet so inspiring for millions. It is probably the most influential and best-selling wisdom book of the last 100 years and remains as relevant today as ever. In The Madman Gibran introduces the themes that preoccupy his subsequent writingsーamong them truth, love, forgiveness, grief, work, pleasure, death, and freedom. Gibran’s second collection of parables and poems, The Forerunner, anticipates The Prophet both in its concerns and its mastery of Gibran’s timeless, pure, lyrical style. Approachable, profound, and wise, The Prophet remains a work of singular transcendence.

A new introduction by Ulrich Baer and Glenn Wallis illumines Gibran’s beguilingly simple poems and tales, drawing attention to the radical proposal they contain. Also included is a biographical timeline that provides a succinct overview of Gibran’s personal life and the key events of his artistic career.

Ulrich Baer is University Professor at New York University and the host of the podcast “Think About It.” He received his BA from Harvard University and his PhD from Yale University. He is a widely published expert on modern poetry, contemporary photography, literary theory, and philosophy. He is the editor and translator of Rainer Maria Rilke: The Dark Interval and the author of, among other books, The Rilke Alphabet and We Are But a Moment.

Glenn Wallis is a preeminent scholar of classical Buddhist literature, philosophy, and practice and Director of Incite Seminars in Philadelphia. He received a Ph.D. in Buddhist studies from Harvard University’s Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies. He has taught at Brown University, the University of Georgia, and other institutions. He is the author of A Critique of Western Buddhism, Basic Teachings of the Buddha, and many other works.

"The Earth Gods, the last book to be published while Gibran was still in this world, came into the poet's hands two weeks before he was to lay aside all earthly volumes. . . . He had a peculiar feeling of tenderness for this book, unlike what he felt for any of the others. 'Because,' he said, 'it was written out of the poet's hellーa process of childbirth and child-bearing.' . . .

"It is, in my opinion, one of the greatest poems in the language. The Earth Gods is, perhaps, a book for the mystic, a poet's book for poets, for the initiate and the dreamer of vast dreams. Yet I have known those who pride themselves on being highly practical and feet-on-the-ground, who disown any bent toward the mystical and the occult, to pronounce it a book of wonder and power. And as a child of seven to whom I read portions of the poem on request, says unvaryingly, 'Read it again!' This, perhaps, for the music and the almost unearthly beauty of rhythm."

ーBarbara Young, in This Man From Lebanon: A Study of Kahlil Gibran

Kahlil Joseph and the Audiovisual Atlantic Music, Modernity, Transmedia Art【電子書籍】[ Dr. Joe Jackson ]

Kahlil Joseph has collaborated with musicians FKA twigs, Flying Lotus, Sampha and Shabazz Palaces among many others. He has directed numerous films, music videos and advertisements across Africa, America and Europe. The award-winning filmmaker's disruptive style ? which frequently merges visual representations of transcontinental experiences with the countercultural energies of Afrodiasporic music ? challenges the Eurocentric biases underpinning Western media. At the same time, his works generate various contradictions and tensions because they are themselves products situated within an economic framework of neoliberal capitalism, at once offering alternative ways of being while, simultaneously, participating in and thereby sustaining the social structures that they otherwise seek to subvert and dismantle.

This is the first book-length study of Kahlil Joseph's work. Distinguishing the artist's personal and professional personas, it traces Joseph's career trajectory and artistic output, emphasizing how the director's construction of a multifaceted filmmaking persona operates in tandem with his artworks to challenge fixed, unidimensional or stable notions of identity.

Through biographical study and deep examinations of the director's respective transmedia artworks, this book draws from various discussions shaped by Paul Gilroy's ground-breaking text The Black Atlantic (1993). By applying The Black Atlantic's disruptive audiocentric ideas to contemporary digital media forms generated by Kahlil Joseph and his peers alike, this book challenges the latent Eurocentricity on which dominant theorizations of 'modernity' ? as well as the overlapping fields of Film, Media and Screen Studies ? are grounded. In turn, it offers an alternative framework for negotiating the paradoxes, contradictions and transnational flows of our media-saturated present: namely, the Audiovisual Atlantic.

Spirits Rebellious “We are all like the bright moon, we still have our darker side.”?【電子書籍】[ Kahlil Gibran ]

Khalil Gibran was one of a number of Arab intellectuals and writers who lived in the United States in the beginning of the twentieth century and who had a great influence on the development of modern Arabic literature through the exploration of Western literary movements. The group was presided by Khalil himself and was baptized Arrabitah, or “The League.” Generally, the Arabic literature of the beginning of the twentieth century was marked by the revolutionary ideas advanced by Arrabitah members as well as by other Arab intellectuals and literary men who felt the urgent need to revolutionize classic Arabic verse and prose. It was a growing urge to innovate and to break with old literary traditions and conventions. The current eventually helped to open new horizons such as the flourishing, in the second half of the twentieth century, of Arabic prose poetry and free verse. The Arrabitah experience was, actually, fundamental in the life of Khalil Gibran who was regarded as a literary rebel and a leading figure of the Arabic literary Renaissance in addition to his Oriental contributions to Western poetry and thought. Gibran's work covers such themes as justice, religion, science, free will, love, happiness, the soul, the body, and death. He is widely considered to have been one of the most important figures in Arabic poetry and literature during the first half of the twentieth century.
