The Indebted Woman Kinship, Sexuality, and Capitalism【電子書籍】[ Isabelle Gu?rin ]

Women, and particularly poor women, have become essential cogs in the wheel of financialized capitalism. Globally, women are responsible for managing household debt, and that debt has exploded over the last decade, reaching an all-time high after the COVID-19 pandemic. Across various categories of loans, including subprime lending, microcredit policies, and consumer loans, as well as rent and utilities, women are overrepresented as clients and managers, and are being enfolded into the system. The Indebted Woman discusses the crucial yet invisible roles poor women play in making and consolidating debt and credit markets. Isabelle Gu?rin, Santosh Kumar, and G. Venkatasubramanian spent over two decades observing a credit market that specifically targets women in the Indian countryside of east-central Tamil Nadu. They found that paying off debts required labor, frequently involved sexual transactions, and shaped women's bodies and subjectivities. Bringing together ethnography, statistical surveys, and financial diaries, they offer for the first time a comprehensive theory for this sexual division of debt that goes far beyond the Indian case, exposing the ways capitalism transforms womanhood and how this transformation in turn fuels capitalism.

Nursing Care of Adoption and Kinship Families A Clinical Guide for Advanced Practice Nurses【電子書籍】[ Karen J. Foli, PhD, MSN, RN, FAAN ]

"This is a landmark book that should be read around the world. For far too long adoption and kinship families have not received the attention that they so sorely need...The material in this book is well researched, sensitively delivered, and essential for any clinician for adoption and kinship families."ーCheryl Tatano Beck, DNSc, CNM, FAAN,Professor, School of Nursing, University of Connecticut?Storrs, From the Foreword

Provides foundational knowledge on how to provide current, evidence-based, clinical best practices for the specific needs of adoption and kinship families.

To be a family, and what that means in society, is undergoing dramatic changes that reflect fluidity in the definition of spouse, children, and kin. Pediatric, family, adult-gerontology, psychiatric-mental health, and other advance practice nurses increasingly serve as frontline primary care providers for the growing number of adoption and kinship families. The creation and preservation of these nontraditional families are often replete with social, cultural, and legal issues that the advanced practice nurse must recognize to provide optimal care. This groundbreaking clinical guide breaks down the adoption and kinship triads into their distinct partsーthe birth parents, adoptive or kinship parents, and the childーand analyzes the relationships among them and how the nurse can assist their development.

Beginning with an overview of adoption and kinship parenting, this book also discusses the specific psychosocial and health care?related needs of adoption and kinship families using detailed case studies to illustrate a variety of conditions and circumstances, along with guidance on how nurses should intervene. A clinically focused section within the case study chapters covers assessment, interventions, referrals, and follow-up considerations. Learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter relay major discussion points and sidebars embedded in each chapter provide related resources for additional information on the health care considerations of adoption and kinship families.

Key Features:

Addresses nursing’s specific role in the holistic assessment and care of the different members of adoption and kinship families

Authored by a renowned nurse leader in adoption and kinship care

Provides chapter objectives, highlights, and questions for reflection

Promotes current, evidence-based best practices

Includes a glossary of adoption-friendly language

Discusses nursing practice within the context of a larger health care team

Critical Kinship Studies An Introduction to the Field【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Peel ]

This book draws together research on posthumanism and studies of kinship to elaborate an account of western human kinship practices. Studies of kinship have increasingly sought to critique the normative assumptions that often underpin how caring relationships between humans are understood. The categorisation of 'human' and 'kinship' is brought into question and this book examines who might be excluded through adherence to accepted categories and how a critical lens may broaden our understanding of caring relationships. Bringing together a diverse array of analytic foci and theoretical lenses, Critical Kinship Studies opens up new avenues for understanding what it means to be in relationships with others, and in so doing challenges the human exceptionalism that has often limited how we think about family, loss, love and subjectivity.

Creating New Families Therapeutic Approaches to Fostering, Adoption and Kinship Care【

Creating New Families is intended to reflect the practice of the specialist, multi-disciplinary Fostering and Adoption team in the Child and Family Department of the Tavistock Clinic. The team is firmly rooted in an approach which values inter-disciplinary working for the contribution which the thinking of each discipline makes to the overall endeavour with the child and family. It also places great importance on multi-agency collaboration, especially with social services and education, without which no intervention with this group of children can succeed. The book represents the differing ways in which members contribute to the work of the team, with individual and joint accounts by clinicians of the ways in which their therapeutic practice has evolved and about the theoretical thinking on which it is based.

Kinship and Culture【

At one time Francis L.K. Hsu put forth a hypothesis on kinship that proposed a functional relationship between particular kinship systems and behavior patterns in particular cultural contexts. The controversy provoked among cultural anthropologists by this hypothesis is reflected in this book, which points the way toward more fruitful investigations of kinship in cultural and psychological anthropology.

Hsu's hypothesis offers an alternative to the study of kinship as a mathematical game and to the treatment of fragmentary aspects of child-rearing practices as major causal factors in culture. Considering the kinship system as the psychological factory of culture, Hsu's aim is to discover the crucial forces in each system that shape the interpersonal orientation of the individual, which forms the individual's basis for adequate functioning as a member of his society and which, in turn, provides his culture with a basis for continuity and change. His central hypothesis is that the attributes of the dominant dyads in a given kinship system (such as father-son or mother-daughter) tend to determine the attitudes and action patterns that the individual in such a system develops toward other relationships in that system as well as toward his relationships outside of it.

The topics are varied, ranging from the link between dyadic dominance and household maintenance, to role dilemmas and father-son dominance, to sex-role identity and dominant kinship relationships. The editor has contributed an introduction, an original essay on kinship and patterns of social cohesion, and a summary chapter to bring coherence to the diversity of opinion stated. This new presentation of Hsu's hypothesis, together with its discussion by eminent anthropologists and its recommendations for future research in the area, is an important addition to the literature on kinship.

Kinship in Action Self and Group【電子書籍】[ Andrew Strathern ]

**For courses in Social Organization, Kinship, and Cultural Ecology.**Kinship has made a come-back in Anthropology. Not only is there a line of noted, general, introductory works and readers in the topic, but theoretical discussions have been stimulated both by technological changes in mechanisms of reproduction and by reconsiderations of how to define kinship in the most productive ways for cross-cultural comparisons.
In addition, kinship studies have moved away from the minutiae of kin terminological systems and the “kinship algebra” often associated with these, to the broader analysis of processes, historical changes and fundamental cultural meanings in which kin relationships are implicated. In this changed, and changing context both Andrew Strathern and Pamela J. Stewart -- both of the University of Pittsburgh -- bring together a number of interests and concerns, in order to provide pointers for students, as well as scholars, in this field of study.
Taking an explicitly processual approach, the authors examine definitions of terms such as kinship itself, approach the topic in a way that is invariably ethnographic, and deploy materials from field areas where they themselves have worked.

How Kinship Systems Change On the Dialectics of Practice and Classification【電子書籍】[ Robert Parkin ]

Using some of his landmark publications on kinship, along with a new introduction, chapter and conclusion, Robert Parkin discusses here the changes in kinship terminologies and marriage practices, as well as the dialectics between them. The chapters also focus on a suggested trajectory, linking South Asia and Europe and the specific question of the status of Crow-Omaha systems. The collection culminates in the argument that, whereas marriage systems and practices seem infinitely varied when examined from a very close perspective, the terminologies that accompany them are much more restricted.

Relative Races Genealogies of Interracial Kinship in Nineteenth-Century America【電子書籍】[ Brigitte Fielder ]

In Relative Races, Brigitte Fielder presents an alternative theory of how race is ascribed. Contrary to notions of genealogies by which race is transmitted from parents to children, the examples Fielder discusses from nineteenth-century literature, history, and popular culture show how race can follow other directions: Desdemona becomes less than fully white when she is smudged with Othello's blackface, a white woman becomes Native American when she is adopted by a Seneca family, and a mixed-race baby casts doubt on the whiteness of his mother. Fielder shows that the genealogies of race are especially visible in the racialization of white women, whose whiteness often depends on their ability to reproduce white family and white supremacy. Using black feminist and queer theories, Fielder presents readings of personal narratives, novels, plays, stories, poems, and images to illustrate how interracial kinship follows non-heteronormative, non-biological, and non-patrilineal models of inheritance in nineteenth-century literary culture.

Material Culture and Kinship in Poland An Ethnography of Fur and Society【電子書籍】[ Siobhan Magee ]

In this ethnography of Krakowian society, Siobhan Magee explores essential questions on the relationship between fur and culture in Poland. How can wearing a fur coat indicate someone's political views in Krakow, beyond their opinion on animal rights? What kinds of associations are given to someone wearing a fur coat in Poland? And what impact does generational difference have on the fur-wearing traditions of modern day Krakowians? Magee looks further into detailed analyses of conversations held relating to fur, including why fur is an apt inheritance for a grandmother to pass on to her granddaughter; what it was like trading fur on 'black markets' during socialism, and why some anti-fur activists link fur to patriarchal power and the Roman Catholic Church. In so doing, it becomes clear how fur is an evocative textile with an uncommonly rich symbolic and historical significance."Magee's research uncovers the symbolic and historic significance that fur evokes in relation to culture in Poland. In her investigations, her ethnography becomes a means for understanding generational difference in Poland. Written with reference to extensive fieldwork, Magee goes on to show how the classification of generation can be a much more accessible indicator and measure of difference than other categories, including sexuality, class and faith. Thus, 'generation' and 'inheritance' are shown to be uniquely powerful idioms with which to discuss power and social change in Poland. A new contribution to material culture and the sensory turn, this will be of interest to scholars of anthropology, ethnography, eastern Europe and material culture and textiles.

Reckoning with Slavery Gender, Kinship, and Capitalism in the Early Black Atlantic【電子書籍】[ Jennifer L. Morgan ]

In Reckoning with Slavery Jennifer L. Morgan draws on the lived experiences of enslaved African women in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to reveal the contours of early modern notions of trade, race, and commodification in the Black Atlantic. From capture to transport to sale to childbirth, these women were demographically counted as commodities during the Middle Passage, vulnerable to rape, separated from their kin at slave markets, and subject to laws that enslaved their children upon birth. In this way, they were central to the binding of reproductive labor with kinship, racial hierarchy, and the economics of slavery. Throughout this groundbreaking study, Morgan demonstrates that the development of Western notions of value and race occurred simultaneously. In so doing, she illustrates how racial capitalism denied the enslaved their kinship and affective ties while simultaneously relying on kinship to reproduce and enforce slavery through enslaved female bodies.

It analyses the misunderstood and marginalized phenomenon of suckling drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Qatar over a seven-year period.

Fadwa El Guindi situates suckling (often given other names or subsumed under misleading classifications) squarely in the analytical category of kinship, with recognition that kinship is necessarily biological, societal and cultural. Kinship Worldview Indigenous Authors Going Deeper With Holistic Education【電子書籍】

Kinship Worldview: Indigenous Authors Going Deeper with Holistic Education is a collection of essays and poems offering testimony to the holism of original traditional Indigenous ways of knowing, teaching and learning. Each chapter describes an Indigenous orientation to holistic education that explores deeply into the sacred interconnectedness of all life on Mother Earth. This collection from internationally recognized Indigenous scholars and leaders reflects a “coherent worldview encompassing the processes of the world and how we humans find meaning in those processes” (Wildcat 2001, 7 From Power and Place: Indian Education in America. Fulcrum Publishing). Indigenous worldview is the ultimate foundation for holistic education. Unfortunately, holistic education has been held back by post-colonial worlding, defined as the result of colonizing hegemony being intrinsic to most educational systems in dominant cultural schooling. As a result, implementation of this holistic ideal has fallen short of what we need to achieve in education. Here is a collection that returns to the roots of holism. ENDORSEMENTS: "This is an extraordinary collection of essays by wise Indigenous educators who share wisdom and practices from their personal experiences. In reading these, it becomes heartbreakingly clear how our profound levels of disconnection from each other and Mother Earth have brought us to this present reality of disaffected and lost students, exhausted teachers, overwhelmed administrators, and the escalating intrusion of political agendas into the classroom. Thankfully, for those of us willing to stay in the struggle, this beautiful work offers true solutions for how to reconnect with Life’s energies and persevere together, just as Native peoples have done for millennia. I am so grateful for this book." ー Margaret Wheatley, Author "We two legged, big brained, hominid creatures are kin to all that ever was, is, and ever will be. The contributors here ask what that means for how we think, learn, and educate our young. This is no fringe pedagogy, but educational first responders coming to rescue a culture in a five-alarm crisis. It is a very good time to reconsider education--the process of drawing forth--and summon the Angels of our better natures, who have been there all along." ー David W. Orr, Arizona State University "For too long, we have sought to impose the tyranny of our pulverising mind on the self-creating, self-organising, and self-sustaining generosity of the all-blessing universal soul manifesting itself in all phenomena - unconditionally and impartially. Modern education, for all the good that it has done, has progressively alienated itself from the nourishing graces of the Sector Noble it was meant to be and stands in dire need of resuscitation and restoration to its original purpose. The present anthology offers, in my view, a most compelling invitation to look into the soul of education deriving its vital life-force from the deep recesses of the fecund womb of all-embracing sovereign Nature." ー Thakur S Powdyel, former Minister of Education, Royal Government of Bhutan

Our Families, Our Values Snapshots of Queer Kinship【電子書籍】[ Robert Goss ]

Our Families, Our Values challenges both the gay community and American society to examine carefully the meaning of family values and the nature of social institutions such as marriage and the family. It asks you provoking, even disturbing, questions such as: “Is it prudent for members of the Lavender community to mimic heterosexual marriage or define personal relations networks as families, when these institutions are rapidly collapsing?” “Are we attempting to mainstream American society into accepting different views of marriage and families?” “Are we subscribing to notions of sexual property that are inherent to the marriage ceremony and the institution of marriage, when we choose to be married?” Despite the complexities of this issue, marriage constitutes a privileged position in western society, and, as this book shows you, without the legal recognition of same-sex marriages, there are many fundamental rights, as well as privileges, denied to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons. As Our Families, Our Values turns upside-down the widely accepted notion that only heterosexual people are entitled to get married, have sex, and rear children, you gain insight into personal struggles and affirmations that testify to the spirituality, procreativity, and wholesomeness of the diverse relationships of the Lavender community. You will also learn about various ongoing efforts to give religious pride to the various configurations of gay relationships, families, and values and the disruption of popular interpretations of the Scriptures that have been used to justify the oppression of sexual minorities. This book will intrigue you over and over again, as you read about:

value systems

transphobia

equal marriage rights

Buddhism’s rejection of “traditional family values”

Brazil’s sex-positive culture

differences between gay male social formations and families

choosing a language and terms that empower sexual minorities and the essence of the liberation movement

sex as communion

relationships based on nurture, not transactionDesigned for academics and students of religion, pastors, priests, rabbis, and lay readers alike, Our Families, Our Values is a multifaceted view of the gay community’s response to the public controversy over gay marriage, adoption, and foster care rights. Ideal as a textbook for courses in sexuality, theology, sociology, women’s studies, and gay and lesbian studies, this book will both inform you and delight you as it reminds you that same-sex unions bring much cause for celebration and that religion and homosexuality are not mutually exclusive.

This book speaks to the meanings and values that inhere in close relations, focusing on ‘family’ and ‘kinship’ but also looking beyond these categories. Multifaceted, diverse and subject to constant debate, close relations are ubiquitous in human lives on embodied as well as symbolic levels. Closely related to processes of power, legibility and recognition, close relations are surrounded by boundaries that both constrain and enable their practical, symbolical and legal formation. Carefully contextualising close relations in relation to different national contexts, but also in relation to gender, sexuality, race, religion and dis/ability, the volume points to the importance of and variations in how close relations are lived, understood and negotiated.

Grounded in a number of academic areas and disciplines, ranging from legal studies, sociology and social work to literary studies and ethnology, this volume also highlights the value of using inter- and multidisciplinary scholarly approaches in research about close relations.

Chapter 11 is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Kinship with Monkeys The Guaj? Foragers of Eastern Amazonia【電子書籍】[ Loretta Cormier ]

Intrigued by a slide showing a woman breast-feeding a monkey, anthropologist Loretta A. Cormier spent fifteen months living among the Guaj?, a foraging people in a remote area of Brazil. The result is this ethnographic study of the extraordinary relationship between the Guaj? Indians and monkeys. While monkeys are a key food source for the Guaj?, certain pet monkeys have a quasi-human status. Some infant monkeys are adopted and nurtured as human children while others are consumed in accordance with the "symbolic cannibalism" of their belief system.

The apparent contradiction of this predator/protector relationship became the central theme of Cormier's research: How can monkeys be both eaten as food and nurtured as children? Her research reveals that monkeys play a vital role in Guaj? society, ecology, economy, and religion. In Guaj? animistic beliefs, all forms of plant and animal lifeーespecially monkeysーhave souls and are woven into a comprehensive kinship system. Therefore, all consumption can be considered a form of cannibalism.

Cormier sets the stage for this enlightening study by examining the history of the Guaj? and the ecological relationships between human and nonhuman primates in Amazonia. She also addresses the importance of monkeys in Guaj? ecological adaptation as well as their role in the Guaj? kinship system. Cormier then looks at animism and life classification among the Guaj? and the role of pets, which provide a context for understanding "symbolic cannibalism" and how the Guaj? relate to various forms of life in their natural and supernatural world. The book concludes with a discussion of the implications of ethnoprimatology beyond Amazonia, including Western perceptions of primates.

The Queer Art of History Queer Kinship after Fascism【電子書籍】[ Jennifer V. Evans ]

In The Queer Art of History Jennifer V. Evans examines postwar and contemporary German history to broadly argue for a practice of queer history that moves beyond bounded concepts and narratives of identity. Drawing on Black feminism, queer of color critique, and trans studies, Evans points out that although many rights for LGBTQI people have been gained in Germany, those rights have not been enjoyed equally. There remain fundamental struggles around whose bodies, behaviors, and communities belong. Evans uses kinship as an analytic category to identify the fraught and productive ways that Germans have confronted race, gender nonconformity, and sexuality in social movements, art, and everyday life. Evans shows how kinship illuminates the work of solidarity and intersectional organizing across difference and offers an openness to forms of contemporary and historical queerness that may escape the archive’s confines. Through forms of kinship, queer and trans people test out new possibilities for citizenship, love, and public and family life in postwar Germany in ways that question claims about liberal democracy, the social contract, and the place of identity in rights-based discourses.
