100 Latinos 100 Historias 2nd Edition A Closer Look to Their Stories【電子書籍】[ R. C. Ontiveros ]

The book you are holding in your hands has unique contents and characteristics: it contains stories narrated by high school students. The former, as part of a Spanish project. The latter, as a show of confidence but at the same time a personal interest to motivate and help others. They are stories of 100 Latino students who narrate obstacles but also the triumphs of those who overcame them. They are 100 experiences that seek to let teachers, parents and society in general know that when a boy or girl does not seem to succeed in school, it is not always due to lack of ability or interest in education, but rather due to factors that imply a great challenge for each student. I hope that reading one of them will help a young man, a young woman, to write your own success story starting with high school graduation.

Prosperity Gospel Latinos and Their American Dream【電子書籍】[ Tony Tian-Ren Lin ]

In this immersive ethnography, Tony Tian-Ren Lin explores the reasons that Latin American immigrants across the United States are increasingly drawn to Prosperity Gospel Pentecostalism, a strand of Protestantism gaining popularity around the world. Lin contends that Latinos embrace Prosperity Gospel, which teaches that believers may achieve both divine salvation and worldly success, because it helps them account for the contradictions of their lives as immigrants. Weaving together his informants’ firsthand accounts of their religious experiences and everyday lives, Lin offers poignant insight into how they see their faith transforming them both as individuals and as communities.

The theology fuses salvation with material goods so that as these immigrants pursue spiritual rewards they are also, perhaps paradoxically, striving for the American dream. But after all, Lin observes, prosperity is the gospel of the American dream. In this way, while becoming better Prosperity Gospel Pentecostals they are also adopting traditional white American norms. Yet this is not a story of smooth assimilation as most of these immigrants must deal with the immensity of the broader cultural and political resistance to their actually becoming Americans. Rather, Prosperity Gospel Pentecostalism gives Latinos the logic and understanding of themselves as those who belong in this country yet remain perpetual outsiders.

Grit and Hope A Year with Five Latino Students and the Program That Helped Them Aim for College【電子書籍】[ Barbara Davenport ]

Grit and Hope tells the story of five inner-city Hispanic students who start their college applications in the midst of the country’s worst recession and of Reality Changers, the program that aims to help them become the first in their families to go college. This year they must keep up their grades in AP courses, write compelling essays for their applications, and find scholarships to fund their dreams. One lives in a garage and struggles to get enough to eat. Two are academic standouts, but are undocumented, ineligible for state and federal financial assistance. One tries to keep his balance as his mother gets a life-threatening diagnosis; another bonds with her sister when their parents are sidelined by substance abuse.

The book also follows Christopher Yanov, the program’s youthful, charismatic founder in a year that’s as critical for Reality Changers’ future as it is for the seniors. Yanov wants to grow Reality Changers into national visibility. He’s doubled the program’s size, and hired new employees, but he hasn’t anticipated that growing means he’ll have to surrender some control, and trust his new staff. It’s the story of a highly successful, yet flawed organization that must change in order to grow.

Told with deep affection and without sentimentality, the students stories show that although poverty and cultural deprivation seriously complicate youths’ efforts to launch into young adulthood, the support of a strong program makes a critical difference.

The Best for Our Children Critical Perspectives on Literacy for Latino Students【

This watershed volume brings together the foremost leading authorities and scholars lending their individual voices to a single, urgent issue: literacy for Latino students. In a departure from traditional paradigms, Latinos examine their own lived experiences in U.S. schools and offer sound theories born from positions of expertise and first-hand knowledge as researchers and educators. Their discussions and critical perspectives on literacy for Latino students in grades K?12 touch on the important topics of:

Encouraging biliteracy in the classroom

Constructing theories of possibility

Promoting critically literate youth

Organizing teaching and learning to students’ potential

Linking literacy to lived experiences

As insiders in Spanish-speaking communities that are often maligned for their children’s alleged “failure” in schools, these authors offer hope for children’s academic potential as well as evidence showing that integration of native language and culture in supportive learning environments can lead to success in literacy in two languages.

Contributors: Alma Flor Ada, H?ctor H. Alvarez, Mar?a V. Balderrama, Patricia Baquedano-L?pez, Lilia I. Bartolom?, Mar?a Echiburu Berzins, Esteban D?az, B?rbara Flores, Mar?a E. Fr?nquiz, Kris D. Guti?rrez, Bobbi Ciriza Houtchens, Robert T. Jim?nez, Eloise Andrade Laliberty, Alice E. L?pez, Roberta Maldonado, Carmen I. Mercado, Luis C. Moll, Rosa Zubizarreta

“In this illuminating volume, the authors courageously challenge the assumption of a skill-based English-only literacy for Latinos. By shifting the literacy debate to a sociocultural terrain, they urge readers to confront the prevailing issues of racism, classism, gender, and economic deprivation that characterize the literacy of Latino/Latina students in the U.S. public schools. Simply put, this volume provides readers with the necessary political clarity to understand and appreciate what it means to be literate in the changing multilingual and multicultural world of the 21st century.”
ーDonaldo Macedo, Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and Education, University of Massachusetts, Boston

In Search of the Mexican Beverly Hills Latino Suburbanization in Postwar Los Angeles【電子書籍】[ Jerry Gonz?lez ]

Residential and industrial sprawl changed more than the political landscape of postwar Los Angeles. It expanded the employment and living opportunities for millions of Angelinos into new suburbs. In Search of the Mexican Beverly Hills examines the struggle for inclusion into this exclusive worldーa multilayered process by which Mexican Americans moved out of the barrios and emerged as a majority population in the San Gabriel Valleyーand the impact that movement had on collective racial and class identity. Contrary to the assimilation processes experienced by most Euro-Americans, Mexican Americans did not graduate to whiteness on the basis of their suburban residence. Rather, In Search of the Mexican Beverly Hills illuminates how Mexican American racial and class identity were both reinforced by and took on added metropolitan and transnational dimensions in the city during the second half of the twentieth century.

US Latinization Education and the New Latino South【

Demonstrates how educators and policymakers should treat the intertwined nature of immigrant education and social progress in order to improve current policies and practices.

Offering a much-needed dialogue about Latino demographic change in the United States and its intersections with P?20 education, US Latinization provides discussions that help move beyond the outdated idea that Mexican and Spanish (language) are synonyms. This nativist logic has caused "Mexican rooms" to re-emerge in the form of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) transitional programs, tagging Latinos as "Limited English Proficient" in ways that contribute to persisting educational gaps. Spencer Salas and Petro R. Portes bring together voices that address the social and geographical nature of achievement and that serve as a theoretical or methodological resource for educational leaders and policy makers committed to access, equity, and educational excellence.

Americans by Heart Undocumented Latino Students and the Promise of Higher Education【電子書籍】[ William Perez ]

Americans by Heart?examines the plight of undocumented Latino students as they navigate the educational and legal tightrope presented by their immigration status. Many of these students are accepted to attend some of our best colleges and universities but cannot afford the tuition to do so because they are not eligible for financial aid or employment. For the few that defy the odds and manage to graduate, their status continues to present insurmountable barriers to employment. This timely and compelling account brings to light the hard work and perseverance of these students and their families; their commitment to education and civic participation; and their deep sense of uncertainty and marginality. Offering a rich in-depth analysis, the author presents a new framework for educational policies that recognizes the merit and potential of undocumented Latino students and links their situation to larger social and policy issues of immigration reform and higher education access.

Contents:

1. Conclusion

William Pérez?is an associate professor of education at Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, California.

“No topic speaks more forcefully about the values of our country than how we treat the poor.?Americans by Heart?gives voice, hope and clarity to one of America’s most invisible groups—undocumented students. Whether one agrees or disagrees with the country’s current immigration policies, we all need to better understand the topic and hear the challenges, dreams, and struggles of these young people. This book is a compelling and thoughtful analysis on a much discussed but little studied topic.”

—William G. Tierney, University Professor and Wilbur Kieffer Professor of Higher Education, Director, Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis, University of Southern California

“In America today a growing caste of youth are coming of age on the shadows of the law. They are American at heart, but?alas, not in the eyes of the law. Far from paralytic or silenced, they are fully engaged in a?struggle?for the autonomy of the human spirit. As?Americans by Heart?poignantly reveals, these youth are fully engaged—with a fierce optimism and Kantian rational agency—performing for us all nothing more and nothing less than what it means to be an American. I applaud William P?rez this urgent, important, and loving book. It is essential reading for all who worry about threats to our democratic promise.”

—Marcelo M. To do so is not only in our best interest as a country, but it responds to fundamental, national—and indeed, human—values related to fairness and human dignity. Kudos to William P?rez for his cogent, stirring analysis of an otherwise vexing social problem.”

—Angela Valenzuela, Professor, University of Texas at Austin, and author of?Subtractive Schooling?and?Leaving Children Behind

Guerrilla Mural of a Siren's Song: 15 Stories by the Father of Latino Science Fiction The Gonzo Science Fiction of Ernest Hogan【電子書籍】[ Ernest Hogan ]

By the Father of Chicano Science Fiction!

"Energetic, fast-paced, funny, and thoroughly enjoyable." -Analog

"Ernest Hogan is the creator of a Xicano science fiction genre with a crossover readership. …raw creativity." - Frank S Lechuga

Here Is What Ernest Hogan Has To Say About Some Of The 15 Gonzo* Stories In This Book...

Part of the reason why a lot of what I do turns out science fiction is because it's so easy for me to identify with aliens and mutants. Being a Chicanoid polluted with Black Irish genes, I'm more Mutant Mex than Futuro-Africoid, and look like that brown, mongrelized Third World nightmare that ruins the sleep of so many Klansmen. This all leaves me with no culture that I can really call my own.

THE YENAGLOSHI EXPRESS
The idea for this one came from a Kerouac-ian road trip through Arizona I took with my high school buddy, Dennis. I'm not sure if my comedic depiction of werewolves jibes with the horror that people have of them. But I'm an outsider from another culture.

REXITOS
I read an item about how on an island near Siberia, mammoths adapted to the post-Ice Age environment by becoming smaller. In reality, millions of years have gone by. Wouldn't some kind of evolution have gone on? I was following how South America was changing, with the drug trade and other developments, and had all these silly ideas from my fascination with sleazy jungle tales.

PANCHO VILLA'S FLYING CIRCUS
Steampunk started becoming popular, and the centennial of the 1910 Mexican Revolution came along. Then I decided to visualize it as a spaghetti western. The story was suddenly more focused and had a bad attitude that was perfect for the alternative universe social commentary.

LUPITA'S HAND
The Western is the mythology of Norteamerica. The tropes of the western are loosening. The good guys don't have to be white or speak English. With different viewpoints, come different stories. Which is okay by me. I've always preferred my westerns weird. Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo is my all-time favorite.

UNO! … DOS! ONE-TWO! TRES! CUATRO!
They call me the Father of Chicano Science Fiction. I decided to run wild with the idea of what would happen if Chicanos had access to the technology of their mighty, rasquache imaginations, and to do some vicious what-if riffs on current political developments. When the story spun out of control, I let it.

FRANK'S TRICER RUN
Of course my bullfighting fascination overlaps into the running of the bulls at the Fiesta de San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain. Back in the Nineteen-Nineties, after Jurassic Park dinosaurs were all the rage. Could I come up with a story with dinosaurs and bullfighting?

THE GREAT MARS-A-GO-GO MEXICAN STANDOFF
Could I get away with using the word "Mexican" in the title of a science fiction story... Why not a space opera? With a private eye? And gangsters in a colonized solar system. Then I got my twisted mind working on it ...

FLYING UNDER THE RADAR WITH PACO AND LOS FREETAILS
This is the origin story of my character, Paco Cohen, Mariachi of Mars. I was depressed, still observing, learning. I learned a lot from the Chicanas I worked with, their lives fascinated and inspired me. I imagined my situation on a colonized Mars.

COYOTE GOES HOLLYWOOD
This is inspired by my travels in the Southwest/Aztl?n, and love of cartoons. All I had to do was plug Native American mythology into the modern media environment, and KER-BLAMMO!

*The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction

Latino Small Businesses and the American Dream Community Social Work Practice and Economic and Social Development【電子書籍】[ Melvin Delgado ]

Latino small businesses provide social, economic, and cultural comfort to their communities. They are also excellent facilitators of community capacityーa major component of effective social work practice. Social work practitioners have a vested interest in seeing such businesses grow, not only among Latinos but all communities of color. Reviewing the latest research on formal and informal economies within urban communities of color, Melvin Delgado lays out the demographic foundations for a richer collaboration between theory and practice.

Delgado deploys numerous case studies to cement the link between indigenous small businesses and community well-being. Whether regulated or unregulated, these establishments hire from within and promote immigrant self-employment. Latino small businesses often provide jobs for those whose criminal and mental health backgrounds intimidate conventional businesses. Recently estimated to be the largest group of color running small businesses in the United States, Latino owners top two million, with the number expected to double within the next few years. Joining an understanding of these institutions with the kind of practice that enables their social and economic improvement, Delgado explains how to identify and mobilize the kinds of resources that best spur their development.

Moving Beyond Borders examines the life and accomplishments of Julian Samora, the first Mexican American sociologist in the United States and the founding father of the discipline of Latino studies. Detailing his distinguished career at the University of Notre Dame from 1959 to 1984, the book documents the history of the Mexican American Graduate Studies program that Samora established at Notre Dame and traces his influence on the evolution of border studies, Chicano studies, and Mexican American studies.

Samora's groundbreaking ideas opened the way for Latinos to understand and study themselves intellectually and politically, to analyze the complex relationships between Mexicans and Mexican Americans, to study Mexican immigration, and to ready the United States for the reality of Latinos as the fastest growing minority in the nation. In addition to his scholarly and pedagogical impact, his leadership in the struggle for civil rights was a testament to the power of community action and perseverance. Focusing on Samora's teaching, mentoring, research, and institution-building strategies, Moving Beyond Borders explores the legacies, challenges, and future of ethnic studies in United States higher education.

Contributors are Teresita E. Latino Spin Public Image and the Whitewashing of Race【電子書籍】[ Arlene D?vila ]

Winner of the 2010 Distinguished Book Award in Latino Studies from the Latin American Studies Association

Follows the Latino public image and its impact on U.S. national identity

Illegal immigrant, tax burden, job stealer. Patriot, family oriented, hard worker, model consumer. Ever since Latinos became the largest minority in the U.S. they have been caught between these wildly contrasting characterizations leaving us to wonder: Are Latinos friend or foe?

Latino Spin cuts through the spin about Latinos’ supposed values, political attitudes, and impact on U.S. national identity to ask what these caricatures suggest about Latinos’ shifting place in the popular and political imaginary. Noted scholar Arlene D?vila illustrates the growing consensus among pundits, advocates, and scholars that Latinos are not a social liability, that they are moving up and contributing, and that, in fact, they are more American than “the Americans.” But what is at stake in such a sanitized and marketable representation of Latinidad? D?vila follows the spin through the realm of politics, think tanks, Latino museums, and urban planning to uncover whether they effectively challenge the growing fear over Latinos’ supposedly dreadful effect on the “integrity” of U.S. national identity. What may be some of the intended or unintended consequences of these more marketable representations in regard to current debates over immigration?

With particular attention to what these representations reveal about the place and role of Latinos in the contemporary politics of race, Latino Spin highlights the realities they skew and the polarization they effect between Latinos and other minorities, and among Latinos themselves along the lines of citizenship and class. Finally, by considering Latinos in all their diversity, including their increasing financial and geographic disparities, D?vila can present alternative and more empowering representations of Latinidad to help attain true political equity and intraracial coalitions.
