Law and the Restoration: Law and Latter-day Saint History is a profound exploration of the intricate legal history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In this first of two volumes, Nathan B. Oman delves into the unique intersection of law and religion, uncovering how legal frameworks have shaped and been shaped by the experiences of Latter-day Saints. Through a series of meticulously researched essays, Oman reveals the profound impact of legal conflicts and developments on the growth and identity of the Church. From the early struggles for legal recognition and the battles over polygamy to the establishment of corporate entities and the role of religious courts, this book offers a comprehensive and enlightening narrative of the Church's legal journey.

Oman's scholarly work extends beyond mere historical recounting; it situates the Mormon legal experience within the broader context of American legal history. By examining the ways in which the Latter-day Saints navigated the legal challenges posed by a predominantly Protestant legal system, Oman provides invaluable insights into the broader themes of religious freedom, church-state relations, and legal pluralism.
Law and the Restoration: Law and Latter-day Saint Thought and Scripture is a comprehensive exploration of the intricate relationship between legal principles and the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Author Nathan B. Oman delves into the profound ways in which Mormon theology intersects with legal concepts, offering readers a detailed analysis of church doctrines, their authority, and their implications for members' daily lives. In doing so, Oman addresses foundational questions about the nature of church authority, the role of personal judgment, and the dynamic interplay between divine law and secular legal systems. The book is not just an academic treatise but a thoughtful discourse aimed at elucidating how Mormons navigate complex moral and legal landscapes in their quest to reconcile faith with modern societal norms.

Each chapter in Law and Latter-day Saint Thought and Scripture serves as a deep dive into specific aspects of Mormon doctrine and its legal ramifications. |

In "History of Joseph Smith, the Prophet and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," Joseph Smith presents a profound narrative that chronicles the rise of a religious movement through the lens of his own experiences and revelations. Written in an autobiographical style, the book combines personal anecdotes with a broader historical account, contextualizing the establishment of the Latter-day Saint movement in the early 19th century. Smith employs a straightforward, yet impassioned prose, aiming to deliver an authoritative and personal account of the challenges faced by the church, from its inception in upstate New York to its burgeoning congregations across America. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter-day Saint movement, was deeply influenced by his experiences in a rapidly changing America during the Second Great Awakening. Encountering religious diversity and fervent spiritual search, Smith's own visionary experiences led him to articulate a new theology that addressed contemporary spiritual needs. His leadership was marked by both visionary zeal and significant persecution, which shaped the narrative of his life and the foundational history of his church, reflecting his commitment to religious innovation and the struggles associated with it. This meticulous historical account is essential reading for anyone interested in early American religion, the dynamics of religious leadership, and the development of new faith traditions. Smith's insights into his experiences not only illuminate his personal convictions but also provide a window into the complexities of 19th-century American society. Terrible Revolution Latter-day Saints and the American Apocalypse【電子書籍】[ Christopher James Blythe ]
|

The relationship between early Mormons and the United States was marked by anxiety and hostility, heightened over the course of the nineteenth century by the assassination of Mormon leaders, the Saints' exile from Missouri and Illinois, the military occupation of the Utah territory, and the national crusade against those who practiced plural marriage. Nineteenth-century Latter-day Saints looked forward to apocalyptic events that would unseat corrupt governments across the globe, particularly the tyrannical government of the United States. The infamous “White Horse Prophecy” referred to this coming American apocalypse as “a terrible revolution… in the land of America, such as has never been seen before; for the land will be literally left without a supreme government.” Mormons envisioned divine deliverance by way of plagues, natural disasters, foreign invasions, American Indian raids, slave uprisings, or civil war unleashed on American cities and American people. For the Saints, these violent images promised a national rebirth that would vouchsafe the protections of the United States Constitution and end their oppression. In Terrible Revolution, Christopher James Blythe examines apocalypticism across the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, particularly as it took shape in the writings and visions of the laity. The responses of the church hierarchy to apocalyptic lay prophecies promoted their own form of separatist nationalism during the nineteenth century. Yet, after Utah obtained statehood, as the church sought to assimilate to national religious norms, these same leaders sought to lessen the tensions between themselves and American political and cultural powers. As a result, visions of a violent end to the nation became a liability to disavow and regulate. Ultimately, Blythe argues that the visionary world of early Mormonism, with its apocalyptic emphases, continued in the church's mainstream culture in modified forms but continued to maintain separatist radical forms at the level of folk-belief.

The Rise of the Latter-day Saints The Journals and Histories of Newel Knight【

Historians and academics use a handful of histories written by those closest to Joseph Smith during ministry to document and tell the story of the Latter-day Saints. One of the most important histories that has not previously been available is a complex history of the early Church written in several installments by Newel Knight. He was one of a few early converts to write about the founding events in Church history. Knight died in January 1847, north of Winter Quarters, at the young age of forty-six.

During the last five years of his life, he wrote a personal history composed of two elements: autobiography and journal. Though extremely important to the history of the Church, Knight's history has always been a difficult source to use because it was never published in one place until now. This publication of his history will bring together his manuscripts and offer a way to cite them more precisely.

Exhibiting Mormonism The Latter-day Saints and the 1893 Chicago World's Fair【電子書籍】[ Reid Neilson ]
|

The 1893 Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair, presented the Latter-day Saints with their first opportunity to exhibit the best of Mormonism for a national and an international audience after the abolishment of polygamy in 1890. The Columbian Exposition also marked the dramatic reengagement of the LDS Church with the non-Mormon world after decades of seclusion in the Great Basin. Between May and October 1893, over seven thousand Latter-day Saints from Utah attended the international spectacle popularly described as the ''White City.'' While many traveled as tourists, oblivious to the opportunities to ''exhibit'' Mormonism, others actively participated to improve their church's public image. Hundreds of congregants helped create, manage, and staff their territory's impressive exhibit hall; most believed their besieged religion would benefit from Utah's increased national profile. Moreover, a good number of Latter-day Saint women represented the female interests and achievements of both Utah and its dominant religion. These women hoped to use the Chicago World's Fair as a platform to improve the social status of their gender and their religion. Additionally, two hundred and fifty of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's best singers competed in a Welsh eiseddfodd, a musical competition held in conjunction with the Chicago World's Fair, and Mormon apologist Brigham H. Roberts sought to gain LDS representation at the affiliated Parliament of Religions. In the first study ever written of Mormon participation at the Chicago World's Fair, Reid L. Neilson explores how Latter-day Saints attempted to ''exhibit'' themselves to the outside world before, during, and after the Columbian Exposition, arguing that their participation in the Exposition was a crucial moment in the Mormon migration to the American mainstream and its leadership's discovery of public relations efforts. After 1893, Mormon leaders sought to exhibit their faith rather than be exhibited by others.

The Early and Latter Rain【電子書籍】[ Richard Govier ]
|

The harvest of the earth is at the root of God's purpose for mankind, and humanity is the "field" into which God is planting the "seeds" of His Kingdom. Many of Christ's parables dealt with the sowing of seed and the harvest that could be expected. It should not be surprising, therefore, that the Feasts of Israel should be linked to the rainy seasons in Palestine if they were to be symbols of God's Harvest. Rain has everything to do with the planting and the maturing of seed. When it came to the annual Feasts of Israel, they represented more than the mundane gathering of the fruit of the earth. They represented the planting and the maturing of a spiritual "seed" that God had planted.

Richard O. Govier (1928-2018) was a Protestant pastor and missionary and travelled the world in that capacity. He planted a number of churches as well as training pastors who served in Brazil, Chile, Argentina and across the United States.

Revival and Awakenings Volume Two Refreshing of the Latter Rains【電子書籍】[ Riaan Engelbrecht ]
|

Volumes one and two of Revival and Awakenings (part of the End-Time Series) explore what is a real revival and a spiritual awakening. Prophetically, it delves into what God has been saying for a long time, which is that the Lord will sweep the earth with revival in the end times which will ignite many followers with His holy fire. What will this revival look like? This is the big question, and one would rather say it will not be a singular event, but a sequence of Godly movements across the globe that will be infectious, contagious and real. In an awakening, the Holy Spirit gives unbelieving people - who are dead in their trespasses and sins -a new awareness of their needs. A revival is connected to the people of God and it is when those who are in churches - those who are professing believers - are ministered to by the Holy Spirit in such a way that they are renewed in their devotion to the Lord. The time is ripe for the one final great harvest, yet this calls for the revived church, full of the fire of the Holy Spirit, to go into the fields, to awaken the lost and the forgotten and broken, and to bring them into the loving embrace of a God who is full of compassion, grace and mercy. This is the time of spiritual latter rains, and now is the time to welcome the embrace of a God who is real, alive, and who calls us all into His arms to reflect His beauty and greatness. It is not God’s Will that any soul should perish, but that all men should come to the knowledge of God and be saved. God is calling on all believers to cast their net in the deep for the harvest of souls.

Time and the End of Time Discourses on Redeeming the Time and Considering Our Latter End【電子書籍】[ John Fox ]

John Fox’s Time and the End of Time presents the never-dying soul with the weighty things one must deal with while standing on the coast of eternity: God, sin, heaven, hell, and, most of all, the personal work of Christ. Fox’s piercing and searching exposition of two main texts, Ephesians 5:16 and Deuteronomy 32:29, engages readers with motivations, directions, and applications so they can both “redeem the time” and “consider their latter end.” The span of life on earth quickly vanishes, and what is done with it will make or mar for eternity. Either infinite joy with God or the endless abyss of His furyーthe hinge swings in time. “Therefore, do not procrastinate or delay…for a world.”

Fire and Sword: A History of the Latter-day Saints in Northern Missouri, 1836-39【電子書籍】[ Leland Homer Gentry ]
|

Many Mormon dreams flourished in Missouri. So did many Mormon nightmares.
The Missouri period--especially from the summer of 1838 when Joseph took over vigorous, personal direction of this new Zion until the spring of 1839 when he escaped after five months of imprisonment--represents a moment of intense crisis in Mormon history. Representing the greatest extremes of devotion and violence, commitment and intolerance, physical suffering and terror--mobbings, battles, massacres, and political “knockdowns”--it shadowed the Mormon psyche for a century.
Leland Gentry was the first to step beyond this disturbing period as a one-sided symbol of religious persecution and move toward understanding it with careful documentation and evenhanded analysis. In Fire and Sword, Todd Compton collaborates with Gentry to update this foundational work with four decades of new scholarship, more insightful critical theory, and the wealth of resources that have become electronically available in the last few years.
Compton gives full credit to Leland Gentry's extraordinary achievement, particularly in documenting the existence of Danites and in attempting to tell the Missourians’ side of the story; but he also goes far beyond it, gracefully drawing into the dialogue signal interpretations written since Gentry and introducing the raw urgency of personal writings, eyewitness journalists, and bemused politicians seesawing between human compassion and partisan harshness. In the lush Missouri landscape of the Mormon imagination where Adam and Eve had walked out of the garden and where Adam would return to preside over his posterity, the towering religious creativity of Joseph Smith and clash of religious stereotypes created a swift and traumatic frontier drama that changed the Church.

Praise for Fire and Sword:

“Gentry used more thoroughly than any scholar before him the official documents published by the State of Missouri and the U.S. Senate in the aftermath of the Mormons’ departure from the state, which contained the correspondence between Boggs and his militia commanders. . . . Utilizing these sources demonstrated Gentry’s willingness to move beyond ‘traditional’ Mormon interpretive frameworks and seek to understand alternative points of view. Fire and Sword’s appearance could not have been more timely.” ー David G, The Juvenile Instructor.

“Historians of the Mormon experience have long recognized the invaluable contribution of Leland H. Gentry's path-breaking dissertation.” ー Alexander Baugh, Journal of Mormon History

First published in 2006. This volume marks the tenth volume in its series: Religion in History, Society and Culture. This series is designed to bring exciting new work by young scholars on religion to a wider audience. Susanna Morrill offers here a fine and sensitive reading of the little known, and often simply caricatured, history of the religious lives of Mormon women at the turn of the twentieth century. She reads the extensive use of flower imagery in poetry and other writing by these women as a species of lay theologizingーa way that LDS women elaborated and celebrated the latent female symbolism within a still young and incomplete religious system.

Revival and Awakenings Volume Two: Refreshing of the Latter Rains End-Time Remnant, #2【電子書籍】[ Riaan Engelbrecht ]

|

Revival and Awakenings volumes one and two explore what a true revival and a spiritual awakening is. Prophetically, it delves into what God has been saying for a long time, which is that the Lord will sweep the earth with a revival in the end times which will ignite many followers with His holy fire. What will this revival look like? This is the big question, and one would rather say it will not be a singular event, but a sequence of Godly movements across the globe that will be infectious, contagious and real. In an awakening, the Holy Spirit gives unbelieving people - who are dead in their trespasses and sins - a new awareness of their needs. It is not God's Will that any soul He created should perish, but that all men should come to the knowledge of God and be saved. God calls on all believers to cast their net in the deep for the harvest of souls.

Mormons and the Bible The Place of the Latter-day Saints in American Religion【電子書籍】[ Philip L. Barlow ]
|

Philip L. Barlow offers an in-depth analysis of the approaches taken to the Bible by major Mormon leaders, from its beginnings to the present. He shows that Mormon attitudes toward the Bible comprise an extraordinary mix of conservative, liberal, and radical ingredients: an almost fundamentalist adherence to the King James Version co-exists with belief in the possibility of new revelation and surprising ideas about the limits of human language. Barlow's exploration takes important steps toward unraveling the mystery of this quintessential American religious phenomenon. This updated edition of Mormons and the Bible includes an extended bibliography and a new preface, casting Joseph Smith's mission into a new frame and treating evolutions in Mormonism's biblical usage in recent decades.

The 1929 Kelsey Quilters The Brave Sisters Who Found a Safe Place to Worship and Raise Families in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints【電子書籍】[ Beverly Burnett Hamberlin ]

It is a true story of how a 1929 quilt was found in the closet of Mary Cannon Hamberlin folded over a strong hanger along with twenty-two extra blocks covered in plastic and sent to the only relative that her daughters thought might know who the women were that had made it. The woman they sent it to was a convert to the Church. She had done the Family History of both her husband and herself. She had been to Kelsey and met some of the women. Her love of Family and Temple work led her to discover the histories of forty-six women who not only had made quilts together but had been related to each other and to her and her husband's family. The women were all converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from the southern states in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They had all come together in a place called Kelsey, which became the mother colony of the Church in Texas. Wilford Woodruff encouraged the saints to stay in Texas and not make the move to Salt Lake. They sent Missionaries to Kelsey to oversee the education of these new saints. The personal histories of these women help her to overcome the loss of her husband and strengthen her testimony of Jesus Christ so much that she knows that she has to share it with their families. As she researches, she meets others who love these women too. Their Stories also help her to remember and record her own memories and maybe it will help others do the same.
