Revival and Awakenings Volume Two: Refreshing of the Latter Rains End-Time Remnant, #2【電子書籍】[ Riaan Engelbrecht ]
|

Revival and Awakenings volumes one and two explore what a true revival and a spiritual awakening is. Prophetically, it delves into what God has been saying for a long time, which is that the Lord will sweep the earth with a revival in the end times which will ignite many followers with His holy fire. What will this revival look like? This is the big question, and one would rather say it will not be a singular event, but a sequence of Godly movements across the globe that will be infectious, contagious and real. In an awakening, the Holy Spirit gives unbelieving people - who are dead in their trespasses and sins - a new awareness of their needs. A revival is connected to the people of God and it is when those who are in churches - those who are professing believers - are ministered to by the Holy Spirit in such a way that they are renewed in their devotion to the Lord. The time is ripe for the one final great harvest, yet this calls for the revived church, full of the fire of the Holy Spirit, to go into the fields, to awaken the lost and the forgotten and broken, and to bring them into the loving embrace of a God who is full of compassion, grace and mercy. This is the time of spiritual latter rains, and now is the time to welcome the embrace of a God who is real, alive, and who calls us all into His arms to reflect His beauty and greatness. It is not God's Will that any soul He created should perish, but that all men should come to the knowledge of God and be saved. God calls on all believers to cast their net in the deep for the harvest of souls.

Sermon at the Temple and Sermon on the Mount A Latter-day Saint Approach【電子書籍】[ John W. Welch ]
|
The Sermon on the Mount has had greater influence on the history and character of Christianity than any other text in the Bible. Yet as biblical scholar Hans Dieter Betz has recently lamented, "New Testament scholarship up to the present has offered no satisfactory explanation of this vitally important text." The Sermon at the Temple and the Sermon on the Mount, by John W. Welch, offers, for the first time, a thorough Latter-day Saint interpretation of Jesus' famous sermon. The author relies especially on crucial information and details that only the Book of Mormon can supply. In New Testament Palestine, Jesus gave the Sermon on a mount. In the Book of Mormon's Bountiful, he gave it at the temple (see 3 Nephi 11ー18). Close examination of the Savior's words spoken in Bountiful reveal that they have temple significance, particularly for Latter-day Saints. The relationship of the Sermon to the temple generates an extraordinary explanation of the Sermon on the Mount as a sacred and holy text. While it remains possible to understand the Sermon on the Mount in many different ways, the unique Book of Mormon approach offers insights that make consistent sense of the Sermon as a whole and, at the same time, gives clear meaning to each of its parts. Chapters in this study of the two sermons include "The Temple Context and Unity of the Sermon at the Temple," "Joseph Smith and the Sermon at the Temple," "The Common Israelite Background," "The Sermon at the Temple and the Greek New Testament Manuscripts," and "Toward an Understanding of the Sermon as a Temple Text." Some have seen the presence of the Sermon on the Mount in 3 Nephi as a problem for the Book of Mormon. Now the Savior's words emerge, not as a mere copy of several chapters from the King James Version, but as a profoundly constituted text. The Sermon at the Temple is one more way the Book of Mormon restores plain and precious covenants pertaining to the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ that were once lost.

THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS AND SCIENCE A TRILOGY OF RECONCILIATION APPROACHES【電子書籍】[ Joseph Mark Holmes ]
|

The first section of the trilogy deals with epistemology. The approaches to determine what is true in the author’s religion and science use are discussed, and shown to be somewhat similar. The fundamental beliefs of both religion and science are based on metaphysical assumptions that cannot be proven true with empirical evidence. In the second part of the trilogy, seven essential metaphysical assumptions of the author’s faith are discussed. They are shown to be reasonable beliefs based on respected theories of quantum physics, relativity, the big bang, superstrings, evolution, psychology, geology and anthropology. The third section of the trilogy deals with beliefs about the creation of the earth. Each of the seven days of the creation story in Genesis are reinterpreted based on the finding of science, and beliefs of the LDS Church. This includes a form of evolution and pre-Adamic man. It is consistent with the writer's religious faith.

I was very much aware of my failings as a Christian. Gods intent for my life was that I would be like Him; that I would be Holy as He is Holy. Is that even possible? I was constantly contending with my fleshly inclination to focus on my own self reliance and self worth. Though I had been a born again Christian for many years, I knew something wasnt quite right. I was trusting in my own ability to overcome the power of the flesh and I was failing miserably. It was only as I began to exercise faith in the power of Christ in me that I began to live as a restored descendant of Jesus instead of a fallen descendant of Adam. It is only as I am learning to submit to the will and intent of my Heavenly Husband that I am finally beginning to experience an intimate relationship with my creator God.

Snow offers an insightful exploration of the life and legacy of one of the most prominent leaders in the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Dawn of Modern Medicine: An Account of the Revival of the Science and Art of Medicine Which Took Place in Western Europe During the Latter Half of the 18th Century and the First Part of the 19th【電子書籍】[ Albert Henry Buck ]
|

This work is in the main a continuation of the volume entitled “The Growth of Medicine,” but it is also intended to serve as an amplification of the latter part of that work, which, owing to various circumstances that were in large measure beyond my control, lacked completeness. The most troublesome of these adverse circumstances was the fact that I had failed, during a recent visit to Europe, to find those sources of trustworthy information upon which alone such a narrative could properly be based; and later still, when I made my first attempts to construct the text of the present volume, I again encountered the same kind of obstacles, but in an even greater degree, and was then strongly disposed to abandon the undertaking altogether. At this juncture of affairs, however, I was much surprised and pleased to receive from Mrs. Charles F. Norton, the librarian of Transylvania College at Lexington, Ky., a letter in which she stated that the college had in its possession a large collection of medical works which had been purchased at Paris, France, in 1819, at which period of its history the institution bore the title of Transylvania University and possessed a flourishing medical department; and that the president of the institution would be happy to extend to me every possible facility for utilizing this great mass of historical material. Shortly afterwards, in reply to my request that I might be furnished with a partial list of the books contained in this collection, in order that I might determine how many of them related to the period in the history of French medicine in which I was at that time particularly interested,ーthe period, mainly, from about 1760 to 1830,ーI received a card catalogue of the titles of over 100 French, English and Latin treatises. This information removed all doubts from my mind concerning the wisdom of my visiting Lexington, and I accordingly signified my prompt acceptance of the cordial invitations extended to me by President Crossfield. As I write these lines I am prompted to add the further statement that during my stay at Lexington, which covered a period of seven months, I received every assistance from the Transylvania College authorities that I could possibly desire; and in particular I wish to express my deep sense of gratitude to the librarian, Mrs. Norton, for the interest which she manifested in my work and for the valuable assistance which she rendered in hastening its completion. Cuvier, the celebrated naturalist, in a memoir which he read before the Royal Institute of France, makes the following statement: “It is not through a perusal of the insufficient extracts that are commonly made from the published works of distinguished men, nor through the incomplete indications which the recital of their discoveries may furnish, that we derive the greatest pleasure from the eulogies pronounced after the death of these men. This desirable result is more likely to be obtained when we are made intimately acquainted with their individual traits of character,ーwhen we are, so to speak, permitted to know these men in a social way; when we are given the opportunity of contemplating, close at hand, their distinct qualities, their virtues, yes, even their faults,ーprovided the facts are plainly stated by one who is skilled in such portraiture. Furthermore, the reader is sure to derive the greatest pleasure, and also to be the most benefited, when every page of the eulogy furnishes evidence of the genuine happiness and wonderful serenity which characterize the lives of those who devote themselves to the culture of the sciences. Compare these men with those who have been intent on securing glory through devastating the world, and note how frequently they live to be septuagenarians or even octogenarians.” Deeply impressed by the wisdom of the advice thus briefly given by the celebrated French naturalist, I have striven, in the following chapters, to act upon it as circumstances might permit.

'Egypt My People ... and Israel My Inheritance' The Non-Israelite Nations In The Latter Prophets【電子書籍】[ Daniel C. Timmer ]
|

Few parts of the Old Testament are more challenging to read than the prophets. Not only are so-called messianic passages relatively rare, but apart from Jonah, these books seem to present a message that is particularly negative, if not xenophobic, when it comes to the 'nations.'

Daniel Timmer contends that this impression is not only mistaken but diametrically opposed to the books' message. Following the direction established by God's foundational promise to Abram in Genesis 12, Timmer examines the presentation of the nations in the Latter Prophets in their original contexts, through the New Testament and into the church's contemporary mission. He explains how the prophets' negative presentations of the nations fit into God's purpose to redeem people from every tribe and tongue, he explores the radical significance of the prophets' frequent predictions that non-Israelites will become integral members of God's chosen people.

This study also deals with practical issues, including the place of ethnicity and nationality in Christian identity and the church's fraught relationships with secular and political power structures.

This is a volume in the New Studies in Biblical Theology. The NSBT is a series of monographs that address key issues in the discipline of biblical theology.

Latter Day Dissent: At the Crossroads of Intellectual Inquiry and Ecclesiastical Authority【電子書籍】[ Philip Lindholm, ]
|

This volume collects, for the first time in book form, stories from the “September Six,” a group of intellectuals officially excommunicated or disfellowshipped from the LDS Church in September of 1993 on charges of “apostasy” or “conduct unbecoming” Church members. Their experiences are significant and yet are largely unknown outside of scholarly or more liberal Mormon circles, which is surprising given that their story was immediately propelled onto screens and cover pages across the Western world.
Interviews by Dr. Philip Lindholm (Ph.D. Theology, University of Oxford) include those of the “September Six,” Lynne Kanavel Whitesides, Paul James Toscano, Maxine Hanks, Lavina Fielding Anderson, and D. Michael Quinn; as well as Janice Merrill Allred, Margaret Merrill Toscano, Thomas W. Murphy , and former employee of the LDS Church’s Public Affairs Department, Donald B. Jessee.
Each interview illustrates the tension that often exists between the Church and its intellectual critics, and highlights the difficulty of accommodating congregational diversity while maintaining doctrinal unityーa difficulty hearkening back to the very heart of ancient Christianity.

Anthropological Optimism vs. Anthropological Pessimism and We Need to Recuperate the Latter【電子書籍】[ Dr. Rafael Xavier Gonzalez ]
|

We live in an age intoxicated with optimism, an optimism that flatters human nature, promises endless progress, and yet quietly erodes our sense of truth. But when man forgets his own brokenness, hope itself begins to collapse. This book journeys into that tension between optimism and pessimism, showing how each has shaped philosophy, theology, and culture. From the utopian dreams of Rousseau to the despair of Schopenhauer, from the wisdom of Augustine and Aquinas to the mystical depth of John of the Cross, the great struggle has always been the same: how do we understand man in light of both his dignity and his fall? Here is a vision that dares to recover the forgotten half of the equation. By restoring a sober awareness of sin and limitation, a deeper horizon opens-a horizon where true optimism is found not in man's strength, but in God's goodness. It is a call to balance, to clarity, and to a hope that endures because it is rooted in reality.

It is a historical account of polygamy, adultery, and child molestation in the name of God.

The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) owns walled and fenced compounds across the United States and Canada complete with watchtowers in an effort to keep evil outsiders from entering and isolate their righteous followers within. Their supposed prophet Warren Steed Jeffs towers 6'3" with short brown hair and wide brown eyes often peering out from a pair of wire-rimmed glasses. Though Jeffs is now doing a life sentence in a Texas prison, he still controls the FLDS sect with approximately 10,000 followers and has at least 77 wives still under his control.
This book will tell the strange story of the FLDS by examining its original roots in the Mormon Church and then explain how it formed from the major faction of Mormon fundamentalists after the 1890 church manifesto that banned polygamy. We will examine the sect's growth and early years as it morphed from a priesthood council of seven men to a one-man prophet dictatorship. The three major splits within the faction will also be discussed.

At last we will travel along with the pedophile Warren Jeffs and witness his sexual perversion and lust for power as he takes away the innocence of young children and rips apart the families of his followers under the guise of ensuring salvation of his flock in the name of God. You will also be able to watch the inability of law enforcement to effectively lock Jeffs up for good until hoax phone calls from a woman in Colorado provides them with the break that finally uncovers the evidence they need to put him away in prison for the rest of his life.

Despite the brevity of its run and the diminutive size of its audience, The English Intelligencer is a key publication in the history of literary modernism in the British Isles. Emerging in the mid-1960s from a dissatisfaction with the prevailing norms of 'Betjeman's England', the young writers associated with it were catalysed by the example of Donald Allen's The New American Poetry as they sought to establish a revitalised modernist poetics.

Late Modernism and The English Intelligencer gives the first full account of the extraordinary history of this publication, bringing to light extensive new archival material to establish an authoritative contextualisation of its operation and its relationship with post-war British poetry. This material provides compelling new insights into the work of the Intelligencer poets themselves and, more broadly, the continued presence of an international poetic modernism as a vital force in Britain in the second half of the twentieth century.

Daoism, Meditation, and the Wonders of Serenity From the Latter Han Dynasty (25-220) to the Tang Dynasty (618-907)【電子書籍】[ Stephen Eskildsen ]
|

An overview of Daoist texts on passive meditation from the Latter Han through Tang periods.

Stephen Eskildsen offers an overview of Daoist religious texts from the Latter Han (25?220) through Tang (618?907) periods, exploring passive meditation methods and their anticipated effects. These methods entailed observing the processes that unfold spontaneously within mind and body, rather than actively manipulating them by means common in medieval Daoist religion such as visualization, invocations, and the swallowing of breath or saliva. Through the resulting deep serenity, it was claimed, one could attain profound insights, experience visions, feel surges of vital force, overcome thirst and hunger, be cured of ailments, ascend the heavens, and gain eternal life.

While the texts discussed follow the legacy of Warring States period Daoism such as the Laozi to a significant degree, they also draw upon medieval immortality methods and Buddhism. An understanding of the passive meditation literature provides important insights into the subsequent development of Neidan, or Internal Alchemy, meditation that emerged from the Song period onward.

Negroes and Negro "Slavery:" the first an inferior race: the latter its normal condition.【電子書籍】[ J. H. Van Evrie ]
|

Since the first edition of this work was issued, startling and deplorable events have occurred. The great “Anti-Slavery” delusion, that originated with European monarchists more than fifty years ago, has culminated in disunion and civil war, as its authors always predicted it would. A party strongly imbued with the false theories and absurd assumptions of British writers and abolition societies, is in possession of the Federal Government, which it stands pledged to use to reduce its assumptions to practice. It holds that the negro, except in color, is a man like themselves, and naturally entitled to the same libertyーthat to deny him this liberty, is to enslave himーthat, therefore, Southern society is wrong, and should be revolutionized, and it avows it to be its mission to accomplish thisーto institute a policy that shall finally abolish or destroy the supremacy of the white man, and secure “impartial freedom” for negroes! To this the South replies, that this government was created for white men alone, and their posterity, as declared in the preamble to the Constitutionーthat the Supreme Court has recently declared the same great truthーthat, seizing the government by a mere sectional vote, and placing it in distinct conflict with the social order of the South, with the avowed purpose of penning up its negro population, in order to bring about some day the extinction or overthrow of the existing condition, is, therefore, an overthrow of the Constitutionーthat the object avowed necessarily involves their future destruction, and to save themselves from the wild delusion and malignant fanaticism of the North, they are forced, in self-defense, to withdraw from the Union, hitherto, or until this hostile and dangerous party entered the field, so beneficial to all sections of the country.

In conclusion, the author begs to say, that mere literary display or fine writing is with him quite a subordinate consideration. He only desires to be understood, and, that the grand and momentous truths described in this book shall be clearly comprehended by the masses, with the confident assurance that when they come to understand that their own liberty, welfare, and prosperity are all hazarded in a blind crusade after that which, could it be accomplished, would be the greatest calamity ever inflicted on a civilized people, the causeless and senseless, but frightful sectional conflict now raging will be speedily terminated by the universal uprising of the northern masses in favor of a government of WHITE MEN, and UNION with the South.
