Commentary on the Book of Philippians【電子書籍】[ Claudius Brown ]

The book of Philippians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the Christian community in Philippi, a city in ancient Macedonia (modern-day Greece). The letter is often considered one of Paul's "prison letters," as he is believed to have written it while he was imprisoned, likely in Rome.
The book of Philippians deals with several main themes:
Joy and rejoicing: Paul emphasizes the importance of joy and rejoicing in the Christian life, despite difficult circumstances. He himself is in prison, yet he repeatedly encourages the Philippians to find joy in their faith, to rejoice in the Lord, and to be joyful always.
Unity and humility: Paul urges the Philippians to live in harmony and unity, being of one mind and one spirit. He encourages them to be humble and to consider others as more important than themselves, following the example of Jesus Christ.
Righteousness through faith: Paul emphasizes that righteousness does not come from following the Jewish law or through human effort, but rather through faith in Jesus Christ. He encourages the Philippians to trust in Christ's work on the cross for salvation and to live in accordance with the Gospel.
Pressing on towards the goal: Paul uses the metaphor of a race to describe the Christian life, urging the Philippians to press on towards the goal of knowing Christ and becoming more like Him, forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead.
Generosity and contentment: Paul speaks about the importance of being generous and content in all circumstances. He thanks the Philippians for their financial support and encourages them to be generous towards others, while also finding contentment in Christ regardless of their circumstances.
Prayer and God's provision: Paul highlights the importance of prayer and expresses his confidence in God's provision. He encourages the Philippians to bring their requests to God in prayer and to trust in His faithfulness.
The book of Philippians is one of the letters, or epistles, found in the New Testament of the Bible. It is commonly believed to have been written by the apostle Paul, one of the early leaders of the Christian faith, during his imprisonment in Rome. However, the exact date of its writing is a matter of scholarly debate, and there are different opinions among scholars regarding the purpose and location from which the letter was written.

Paul’s Emotional Regime The Social Function of Emotion in Philippians and 1 Thessalonians【電子書籍】[ Rev Dr Ian Y. S. Jew ]

In his letters Paul speaks often of his emotions, and also promotes certain feelings while banishing others. This indicates that for Paul, emotion is vital. However, in New Testament studies, the study of emotions is still nascent; current research in the social sciences highlights its cognitive and social dimensions. Ian Y. S. Jew combines rigorous social-scientific analysis and exegetical enquiry to argue that emotions are intrinsic to the formation of the Pauline communities, as they encode belief structures and influence patterns of social experience.

By taking joy in Philippians and grief in 1 Thessalonians as representative emotions, and contrasting Paul's approach with that of his Stoic contemporaries, Jew demonstrates that authorized feelings have socially integrating and differentiating functions; by reinforcing the shared theological realities upon which emotional norms are based, group belonging is bolstered. Simultaneously, authorized emotions fortify the theological boundaries between Christians and others, which strengthens group solidarity in the Church by accentuating its members' insider status. Using this framework heuristically, Jew explores how the interplay of symbolic, ritual, and social elements within Paul's eschatological worldview reinforces emotional norms, and demonstrates that attention to emotion can only deepen our understanding of the social formation of the early believers.

A Ricoeurian Analysis of Identity Formation in Philippians Narrative, Testimony, Contestation【電子書籍】[ Dr. Scott Ying Lam Yip ]

Winner of the Outstanding Theological Research Book Award 2024

Scott Ying Lam Yip presents the first specialized narrative study devoted to the identity formation processes in Philippians, based on Paul Ricoeur's narrative theory. Yip demonstrates that the “Christian identity” of the Philippian community is shaped amidst competing narratives with divergent comprehensions, and suggests that it is within an intra-Jewish contestation of testimonies that Paul updates his understanding of God and contends with a group of Jewish Christian leaders regarding the meaning of his suffering.

Yip argues that Paul faces a double contestation of narrative in which both the political authorities and a group of Jewish Christian leaders see his imprisonment as futile and unnecessary; alerting him to an emerging crisis in which the Philippian community's conviction in suffering with him has begun to decline. It is thus essential for Paul to synthesise and install a new paradigmatic story of Christ so that his suffering can be discerned as the defining mark of God's renewed manifestation in an era of Christ's eschatological Lordship. Yip explores the means by which Paul - in a contestation of authority for the re-appropriation of God's past work - contrasts the future-oriented temporality of his testimony with the past-oriented one of the Jewish Christian leaders. He concludes that Paul affirms the value of his present suffering in truthfulness and installs his testimony to be the exemplary story for the Philippian community.

Paul’s Covert Use of Scripture Intertextuality and Rhetorical Situation in Philippians 2:10?16【電子書籍】[ David McAuley ]

This book explores why and how Paul uses Scripture (Old Testament) in Phil 2:10-16. It tests the suggestion that a cluster of tacit references to specific books of Scripture is integral or foundational to Paul's epistolary argument. If the problem in Philippi is the disinclination to accept suffering and death as intrinsic to gospel citizenship, then the muted allusions lead to a single, central theme: "God's approval of suffering and death for the sake of Christ." McAuley argues this theme is the crucial intertext that unifies and gives significance to the whole letter. Previous scholarly efforts to discover congruence between the contexts of Philippians and the Old Testament have rested on a heuristic approach focused on surface-level themes and "facticities" recorded in Paul's text, leading to mixed results. In this investigation McAuley sets forth a new theoretical and exegetical framework that draws on insights from theories of intertextuality, allusion, and rhetorical situation to offer a fresh interpretation of Philippians.

For Everyone Bible Study Guide Philippians【電子書籍】[ Professor Tom Wright ]

Things don't always go the way we intend. It's easy to feel discouraged when we cannot achieve what we hope for or when other people seem to make life difficult. Paul, writing to the Philippians from prison, certainly knew what it was like to have his plans thwarted. Yet, as this most joyful of letters conveys, he maintained a robust confidence in God's power and love. Paul's circumstances make this letter especially poignant, revealing as it does a man enduring huge difficulties and hardships. These eight studies on Philippians encourage us to face our problems with a Pauline fortitude, trust and hope.
