Bishops and monasteries held lordship over vast areas of the realm, often wielding political and judicial powers beyond those of secular lords. Early twentieth-century scholarship tended to view towns with monastic lords as highly distinctive, characterised by robust lordship and violent town-abbey relations, and though subsequent studies have done much to modify this view of relationships between towns and their monastic lords, the shadow of this dramatic interpretation still colours our understanding of these situations.＜/p＞＜p＞Conversely, through a detailed examination of the governmental, guild, parish, and testamentary records of Reading, one of the more populous monastic towns of the period, this book presents a view of town-abbey relations as largely non-violent, thus problematising the more traditional characterisation and interrogating its universality. Uncovering a remarkably swift transition from monastic lordship to self-government, it illuminates how urban society functioned under two very different regimes, both before and after the dissolution of the monasteries. By combining traditional research methods with Social Network Analysis, the author moves beyond a focus on the political elites and institutionalised bodies, such as the corporation, to look at lower-status members of society and how they interacted with the successive governing authorities. From their estates, they served Gaelic and Old English ruling families in the arts of history, law, medicine, and poetry. They farmed, kept guest-houses, conducted schools, and maintained networks of learning. In other capacities, they were involved in political assemblies and memorializing dynastic histories in landscape. This book presents a framework for identifying and interpreting the settings and built heritages of their estates in lordship borderscapes. It shows that a more textured definition of what this learned class represented can be achieved through the material record of the buildings and monuments they used, and where their lands were positioned in the political map. Where literati lived and worked are conceived as expressions of their intellectual and political cultures. Mediated by case studies of the landscapes of their estates, dwellings, and schools, the methodology is predominantly field based, using archaeological investigation and topographic and spatial analyses, and drawing on historical and literary texts, place-names and lore in referencing named people to places. Rather than seeing these relationships as attempts by the popes to assert their lordship and monarchy over the entire world, as many past narratives have, this study asks what rulers got out of these relationships, what they meant, and how they were constructed. Papal government - in fact much pre-modern government in general - was based around replying to petitions. Thus, rulers and subjects, by entering into a relationship with the pope, were able to petition Rome and have their requests approved and given the sanction of papal authority. Papal power was enlisted in the causes of petitioners. All of these relationships - between the popes and the kings of England, Aragon, Sicily, Hungary, Portugal, and a myriad of further polities - have at one time or another been called 'feudal', a word that explains little or nothing about the nature and expectations of the alliance. The second strand of this study examines how these relationships were constructed and how words and concepts circulated. Eventually terms like 'fief' and 'vassal', and ideas about deposition of vassal-kings, were introduced into the political discourse around papal authority over 'their' kings.
