An Essay on the Principle of Population【電子書籍】[ Thomas Malthus ]

One of the most influential works of its era on the subject of population growth Thomas Malthus's "An Essay on the Principle of Population" was first published anonymously in 1798. In it Malthus describes his "Iron Law of Population" which asserts that growing populations ultimately lead to a rising supply of labor that would inevitably lower wages and create an increasing rate of poverty. More specifically Malthus argues "The power of population is so superior to the power of the earth to produce subsistence for man, that premature death must in some shape or other visit the human race." In other words while population has the capacity to grow at an exponential rate the resources that support mans existence, i.e. food and shelter, can only grow at an algebraic rate. While ultimately time would prove Malthus's predictions to be wrong, for they did not foresee the impact of technology on productivity, the work was nonetheless highly influential to both Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in developing the theory of natural selection. The work would also stir the debate around the impact of population growth and lead to the first national census laws in Britain.

Beyond Malthus The Nineteen Dimensions of the Population Challenge【電子書籍】[ Lester R. Brown ]

On the bicentennial of Malthus' legendary essay on the tendency of population to grow more rapidly than the food supply, this book examines the impacts of population growth on 19 global resources and services, including food, fresh water, fisheries, jobs, education, income and health. Despite current hype of a 'birth dearth' in parts of Europe and Japan, the fact remains that human numbers are projected to increase by over 3 billion by 2050. Populations in rapidly growing nations are in danger of outstripping the carrying capacity of their natural support systems and governments in such situations will find it increasingly hard to respond to crises such as AIDS, food and water shortages and mass unemployment. Beyond Malthus examines methods such as the expansion of international family planning, investment in educating young people in the developing world and promotion of a shift towards smaller families which will represent the most humane response to the possible ravages of the population explosion.

Observations on the Effects of the Corn Laws【電子書籍】[ Thomas Robert Malthus ]

Thomas Robert Malthus's 'Observations on the Effects of the Corn Laws' delves into the economic implications of legislation surrounding grain prices in 19th-century England. Written in a straightforward and analytical style, Malthus explores the impact of protectionist measures on agricultural production and social welfare. In the context of the Industrial Revolution, Malthus provides a critical examination of the Corn Laws, shedding light on their consequences for both the agricultural sector and the broader economy. With a focus on empirical data and economic theory, the book presents a compelling argument against government intervention in the market, advocating for free trade policies instead. Malthus's work serves as a seminal text in the history of political economy, influencing subsequent debates on trade and protectionism. Malthus's expertise as a political economist, combined with his empirical research, adds credibility to his analysis of the Corn Laws. His background as a demographer and scholar of population dynamics offers a unique perspective on the intersection of economics and social policy. Readers interested in the intersection of economics, politics, and social welfare will find 'Observations on the Effects of the Corn Laws' to be a thought-provoking and enlightening read.

From Malthus to Mars How to Live, Lead, and Learn in an Exponential World【電子書籍】[ Nicolai Chen Nielsen ]

“A compact, insightful, and practical guide for leaders and managers to flourish in our coming Exponential Age”
ーAzeem Azhar, founder, Exponential View

In 1798, the influential cleric, scholar, and economist Thomas Malthus predicted that the world would soon run out of food, as linear food production growth would be unable to feed the exponentially growing population. Fast forward 200 years, and the world's population has grown almost 10 times, and we are closer to colonizing Mars than we ever will be to running out of food.

The reason? Innovation.

Innovation driven by mass digitization and the convergence of exponentially growing technologies. We know that exponential laws often follow predictable patterns, and this allows us to predict when futuristic applications will become possible and economically feasible.

In From Malthus to Mars, Nicolai Chen Nielsen and Lars Tvede outline the wild future that we are speeding into. Wild, among other things, in terms of anti-ageing, compact farming, robotics, radically new energy solutions, and a fast, fluid, and flexible world of work. The authors map concrete forecasts for when upcoming technologies will break through and change our world, and they paint a picture of what the future in the coming years will look like.

We will learn that while the future is destined to bring a multitude of new opportunities and enhanced abundance, it will also bring increased demands for us as individuals and as organizations. To equip us to thrive in the future, Nielsen and Tvede outline eight key mindsets. These mindsets will help us navigate future trends, reach our most desired future, and give us the ability, as we understand trends, to apply exponentiality and make decisions under uncertainty. The authors also present ten shifts that winning organizations of the future must consider in order to transform themselves and their industries, again and again.

Between them, Nielsen and Tvede have founded/co-founded 13 companies, advised more than 30 Fortune 500 companies, developed thousands of leaders, and published 20 books.

Principles of Political Economy.【電子書籍】[ Thomas Malthus. ]

Elibron Classics Replica of 1820 edition by John Murray, London.
Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834)
This British economist is most famous for the notion that whereas population increases geometrically, resources increase arithmeticallyーimplying that an increasing population is doomed to be short of food and other necessities. Malthus concluded that this dilemma made such phenomena as disease and crime necessary for social stability, only later adding that morality, too, is a safeguard against social upheaval. His works include An Essay on the Principle of Population as It Affects the Future Improvement of Society, in which he sets forth these doctrines, and Principles of Political Economy.

T. R. Malthus's 'The Grounds of an Opinion on the Policy of Restricting the Importation of Foreign Corn' is a seminal work that delves into the economic implications of limiting the importation of foreign corn. Malthus presents a detailed analysis of how such restrictions could impact agricultural production, prices, and the overall well-being of a nation. Written in a clear and methodical style, the book offers valuable insights into the political economy of Malthus's time, with a keen focus on the importance of international trade and its effects on domestic markets. Malthus's arguments are supported by empirical evidence and logical reasoning, making this work a must-read for anyone interested in economic theory and policy. Moving beyond mere theoretical speculation, 'The Grounds of an Opinion' provides a practical and thoughtful examination of a pressing economic issue. T. R. Malthus's expertise as an economist and demographer shines through in this thought-provoking work, demonstrating his deep understanding of the complexities of trade policies and their consequences. Population Malthus His Life and Times【電子書籍】[ Patricia James ]

This is a fascinating insight into the work of one of our greatest thinkers.

Thomas Robert Malthus (1766?1834) is best remembered today for his theories on the menace of over-population; this first ever full-length biography shows him also in his role as one of the founders of classical political economy, still a controversial figure in the history of economic thought. Based on exhaustive research among contemporary sources, it gives an account of Malthus’s two careers, as an economist and as a professor at the East India College.

Patricia James describes how, at the East India College, Malthus was influential in the establishment of an incorruptible Civil Service and the modern system of written examinations, in circumstances which seem almost farcical today. She gives an account of his family and social life, which was full of warmth and variety, with an abundance of ‘characters’ as well as many famous men.

People nowadays are inclined to argue in a vacuum whether Malthus is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ about population outrunning subsistence, and about the adequacy of aggregate demand in a capitalist society. Patricia James shows him in his historical setting, so that the book is a study both of the man and of the age in which he lived. She believes that, paradoxically, if we view Malthus’s works as the period pieces they are, it becomes more and not less easy to see their relevance to our own problems. Although Malthus’s search for basic principles in a changing world was confused and erratic, his ideas are still illuminating to those who prefer investigation and reappraisal to the mere reiteration of dogma. This text was first published in 1975.

An Essay on the Principle of Population Illustrated【電子書籍】[ Thomas Malthus ]

The following Essay owes its origin to a conversation with a friend, on the subject of Mr Godwin's essay on avarice and profusion, in his Enquirer. The discussion started the general question of the future improvement of society, and the Author at first sat down with an intention of merely stating his thoughts to his friend, upon paper, in a clearer manner than he thought he could do in conversation. But as the subject opened upon him, some ideas occurred, which he did not recollect to have met with before; and as he conceived that every least light, on a topic so generally interesting, might be received with candour, he determined to put his thoughts in a form for publication.

The Essay might, undoubtedly, have been rendered much more complete by a collection of a greater number of facts in elucidation of the general argument. But a long and almost total interruption from very particular business, joined to a desire (perhaps imprudent) of not delaying the publication much beyond the time that he originally proposed, prevented the Author from giving to the subject an undivided attention. He presumes, however, that the facts which he has adduced will be found to form no inconsiderable evidence for the truth of his opinion respecting the future improvement of mankind. As the Author contemplates this opinion at present, little more appears to him to be necessary than a plain statement, in addition to the most cursory view of society, to establish it.

It is an obvious truth, which has been taken notice of by many writers, that population must always be kept down to the level of the means of subsistence; but no writer that the Author recollects has inquired particularly into the means by which this level is effected: and it is a view of these means which forms, to his mind, the strongest obstacle in the way to any very great future improvement of society. He hopes it will appear that, in the discussion of this interesting subject, he is actuated solely by a love of truth, and not by any prejudices against any particular set of men, or of opinions. He professes to have read some of the speculations on the future improvement of society in a temper very different from a wish to find them visionary, but he has not acquired that command over his understanding which would enable him to believe what he wishes, without evidence, or to refuse his assent to what might be unpleasing, when accompanied with evidence.

About Author:

(Thomas) Robert Malthus (1766 ? 1834) was a British cleric and scholar, influential in the fields of political economy and demography. Malthus himself used only his middle name Robert. Malthus became widely known for his theories about change in population. His An Essay on the Principle of Population observed that sooner or later population will be checked by famine and disease.

The New Worlds of Thomas Robert Malthus Rereading the Principle of Population【電子書籍】[ Alison Bashford ]

An ambitious global history that fundamentally alters our understanding of Malthus

The New Worlds of Thomas Robert Malthus is a sweeping global and intellectual history that radically recasts our understanding of Malthus's Essay on the Principle of Population, the most famous book on population ever written or ever likely to be. Malthus's Essay is also persistently misunderstood. First published anonymously in 1798, the Essay systematically argues that population growth tends to outpace its means of subsistence unless kept in check by factors such as disease, famine, or war, or else by lowering the birth rate through such means as sexual abstinence.

Challenging the widely held notion that Malthus's Essay was a product of the British and European context in which it was written, Alison Bashford and Joyce Chaplin demonstrate that it was the new world, as well as the old, that fundamentally shaped Malthus's ideas. They explore what the Atlantic and Pacific new worldsーfrom the Americas and the Caribbean to New Zealand and Tahitiーmeant to Malthus, and how he treated them in his Essay. Bashford and Chaplin reveal how Malthus, long vilified as the scourge of the English poor, drew from his principle of population to conclude that the extermination of native populations by European settlers was unjust.

Elegantly written and forcefully argued, The New Worlds of Thomas Robert Malthus relocates Malthus's Essay from the British economic and social context that has dominated its reputation to the colonial and global history that inspired its genesis.

An Investigation of the Cause of the Present High Price of Provisions: Full Text of 1800 Edition (Illustrated)【電子書籍】[ Thomas Malthus ]

The book has an active table of contents for easy access to each chapter.

Thomas Robert Malthus was the founding father of population theory of classical economics and his most well-known work AN ESSAY ON THE PRINCIPLE OF POPULATION was initially published in 1798. Malthus was often misinterpreted, but his views became popular again in the 20th century with the advent of Keynesian economics.

Malthus made essential contributions to classical economics and he has been called the most influential classical economist along with Adam Smith, John Keynes, Karl Marx, and John Stuart Mill. John Keynes called him the "first of the Cambridge economists". In The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, Keynes praised Malthus's understanding of an economy's difficulties in maintaining full employment.

Malthus founded the population theory of classic economics. He told the world that population would increase in an exponential way. On the other hand, food supply could only increase to a certain point due to the limitation of land productivity and other factors. Are Malthus's ideas totally irrelevant today? Not at all. The fact remains that the world population keeps increasing, and will keep increasing.

In An investigation of the cause of the present high price of provisions, published in 1800, Malthus argued high price of bread using the concept similar to “entitlements.” In spite of his principled opposition to the poor laws, Malthus conceded that their effectiveness in transferring purchasing power to those most in need was a major reason for the limited impact of the dearth.

Malthus’s work also influenced Charles Darwin and John Keynes, two of the greatest thinkers. Charles Darwin pioneered evolution theory through his book On the Origin of Species and his theory influenced not only biology but also economics and sociology.

This is a must-read book for people who are also interested in the deepest thoughts and views about the core economic subjects such as government roles by Thomas Malthus, one of the greatest thinkers on the planet.

The book has an active table of contents for easy access to each chapter of the following titles:

1. An Essay on the Principle of Population: Volume one ? Thomas Malthus

2. An Essay on the Principle of Population: Volume two ? Thomas Malthus

Another British economist David Ricardo also shared the same view about population. Ricardo also said the same thing about the population as Malthus that population kept expanding, eventually there was not enough food to go around, and economic growth would stop. Together they led to economics being called "the dismal science."

Malthus’s work also influenced Charles Darwin and John Keynes, two of the greatest thinkers. Charles Darwin pioneered evolution theory through his book On the Origin of Species and his theory influenced not only biology but also economics and sociology.

This is a must-read book for people who are also interested in the deepest thoughts and views about the core economic subjects such as population, supply & demand, employment, and government roles by Thomas Malthus, one of the greatest thinkers on the planet.

An Essay on the Principle of Population【電子書籍】[ Thomas Malthus ]

The Reverend Thomas Robert Malthus (14 February 1766 29 December 1834) was an English scholar who became influential in the previously unrecognized fields of political economics and demography, and he even popularized the economic theory of rent. Among his writings, Malthus became widely known for his theories concerning demographics, notably how populations increase or decrease in response to various factors. The six editions of his An Essay on the Principle of Population, published from 1798 to 1826, observed that sooner or later population gets checked by famine and disease, although science continues to battle those afflictions at the same time. In particular, Malthus wrote in opposition to the popular view in 18th-century Europe that society was improving and in principle was perfectible. This put him at odds with several intellectuals, including Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose notions centered on the goodness of man and the liberty of citizens bound only by the social contracta form of popular sovereignty. Malthus thought that the dangers of population growth would preclude endless progress towards a utopian society, the crux of An Essay on the Principle of Population. An essay on the principle of population【電子書籍】[ THOMAS MALTHUS ]

This work has been recognized as the most influential work of his time. A key part of the book has been devoted to what is now known as the law of the people of the Malthus thorn. This theory suggested that rising population rates would contribute to a growing supply of work that would inevitably reduce wages. In essence, Malthus feared that the continued growth of the population would lend themselves to poverty and famine.

Utilitarianism and Malthus' Virtue Ethics Respectable, Virtuous and Happy【電子書籍】[ Sergio Cremaschi ]

The die-hard image of Malthus the ogre has not completely disappeared yet. And yet, Malthus showed no less concern than Adam Smith for the labouring poor. In order to make full sense of such expression of concern and to appraise their relevance in Malthus’s work, we need to know what moral philosophy, what view of natural science, and what view of the "moral and political science" Malthus endorsed.

This book reconstructs Malthus’s meta-ethics, his normative ethics and his applied ethics on such topics as population, poverty, sexuality and war and slavery. They show how Malthus’s understanding of his own population theory and political economy was that of sub-disciplines of moral and political philosophy. Empirical enquiries required in order to be able to pronounce justified value judgments on such matters as the Poor Laws. But Malthus’s population theory and political economy were no value-free science and his non-utilitarian policy advice resulted from his overall system of ideas and was explicitly based on a set of familiar moral assumptions.

It is mistaken to claim that Malthus’s explanation of disharmony by reference to Divine Wisdom is extraneous to analysis and without influence on the theory of policy; it is true instead that theological consequentialist considerations were appealed to in order to provide a justification for received moral rules, but these were meant to justify a rather traditional normative ethics, quite far from Benthamite ‘new morality’.

In 1798 the first ed. of this famous Essay on Population appeared. Its leading proposition, supported by much learning, is that while population increases approximately in a geometrical ratio, the means of subsistence do so in an arithmetical ratio only, which, of course, opened up an appalling prospect for the humanity.

This premium edition comes with a beautiful Easy-to-Read layout which makes reading comfortable.

Definitions in Political Economy: Preceded by an Inquiry Into the Rules which Ought to Guide Political Economists in the Definition and Use of Their Terms【電子書籍】[ Thomas Robert Malthus ]

In a mathematical definition, although the words in which it is expressed may vary, the meaning which it is intended to convey is always the same. Whether a straight line be defined to be a line which lies evenly between its extreme points, or the shortest line which can be drawn between two points, there never can be a difference of opinion as to the lines which are comprehended, and those which are not comprehended, in the definition. The case is not the same with the definitions in the less strict sciences. The classifications in natural history, notwithstanding all the pains which have been taken with them, are still such, that it is sometimes difficult to say to which of two adjoining classes the individuals on the confines of each ought to belong. It is still more difficult, in the sciences of morals and politics, to use terms which may not be understood differently by different persons, according to their different habits and opinions. The terms virtue, morality, equity, charity, are in every-day use; yet it is by no means universally agreed what are the particular acts which ought to be classed under these different heads. The terms liberty, civil liberty, political liberty, constitutional government, &c. &c., are frequently understood in a different sense by different persons. It has sometimes been said of political economy, that it approaches to the strict science of mathematics. But I fear it must be acknowledged, particularly since the great deviations which have lately taken place from the definitions and doctrines of Adam Smith, that it approaches more nearly to the sciences of morals and politics.
