An Essay on the Principle of Population【電子書籍】[ Thomas Malthus ]

One of the most influential works of its era on the subject of population growth Thomas Malthus's "An Essay on the Principle of Population" was first published anonymously in 1798. In it Malthus describes his "Iron Law of Population" which asserts that growing populations ultimately lead to a rising supply of labor that would inevitably lower wages and create an increasing rate of poverty. More specifically Malthus argues "The power of population is so superior to the power of the earth to produce subsistence for man, that premature death must in some shape or other visit the human race." In other words while population has the capacity to grow at an exponential rate the resources that support mans existence, i.e. food and shelter, can only grow at an algebraic rate. While ultimately time would prove Malthus's predictions to be wrong, for they did not foresee the impact of technology on productivity, the work was nonetheless highly influential to both Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in developing the theory of natural selection. The work would also stir the debate around the impact of population growth and lead to the first national census laws in Britain.

Beyond Malthus The Nineteen Dimensions of the Population Challenge【電子書籍】[ Lester R. Brown ]

On the bicentennial of Malthus' legendary essay on the tendency of population to grow more rapidly than the food supply, this book examines the impacts of population growth on 19 global resources and services, including food, fresh water, fisheries, jobs, education, income and health. Despite current hype of a 'birth dearth' in parts of Europe and Japan, the fact remains that human numbers are projected to increase by over 3 billion by 2050. Populations in rapidly growing nations are in danger of outstripping the carrying capacity of their natural support systems and governments in such situations will find it increasingly hard to respond to crises such as AIDS, food and water shortages and mass unemployment. Beyond Malthus examines methods such as the expansion of international family planning, investment in educating young people in the developing world and promotion of a shift towards smaller families which will represent the most humane response to the possible ravages of the population explosion.

Malthus’s Essay on the Principle of Population remains one of the most influential works of political economy ever written. Most widely circulated in its initial 1798 version, this is the first publication of his benchmark 1803 edition since 1989. Introduced by editor Shannon C. Stimson, this edition includes essays on the historical and political theoretical underpinnings of Malthus’s work by Niall O’Flaherty, Malthus’s influence on concepts of nature by Deborah Valenze, implications of his population model for political economy by Sir Anthony Wrigley, an assessment of Malthus’s theory in light of modern economic ideas by Kenneth Binmore, and a discussion of the Essay’s literary and cultural influence by Karen O’Brien. The result is an enlarged view of the political, social, and cultural impact of this profoundly influential work.

Political Descent Malthus, Mutualism, and the Politics of Evolution in Victorian England【電子書籍】[ Piers J. Hale ]

Historians of science have long noted the influence of the nineteenth-century political economist Thomas Robert Malthus on Charles Darwin. In a bold move, Piers J. Hale contends that this focus on Malthus and his effect on Darwin’s evolutionary thought neglects a strong anti-Malthusian tradition in English intellectual life, one that not only predated the 1859 publication of the Origin of Species but also persisted throughout the Victorian period until World War I. Political Descent reveals that two evolutionary and political traditions developed in England in the wake of the 1832 Reform Act: one Malthusian, the other decidedly anti-Malthusian and owing much to the ideas of the French naturalist Jean Baptiste Lamarck.

These two traditions, Hale shows, developed in a context of mutual hostility, debate, and refutation. Participants disagreed not only about evolutionary processes but also on broader questions regarding the kind of creature our evolution had made us and in what kind of society we ought therefore to live. Significantly, and in spite of Darwin’s acknowledgement that natural selection was “the doctrine of Malthus, applied to the whole animal and vegetable kingdoms,” both sides of the debate claimed to be the more correctly “Darwinian.” By exploring the full spectrum of scientific and political issues at stake, Political Descent offers a novel approach to the relationship between evolution and political thought in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Peopling the World Representing Human Mobility from Milton to Malthus【電子書籍】[ Charlotte Sussman ]

A compelling study of views about population and demographic mobility in the British long eighteenth century

In John Milton's Paradise Lost of 1667, Adam and Eve are promised they will produce a "race to fill the world," a thought that consoles them even after the trauma of the fall. By 1798, the idea that the world would one day be entirely filled by people had become, in Thomas Malthus's hands, a nightmarish vision. In Peopling the World, Charlotte Sussman asks how and why this shift took place. How did Britain's understanding of the value of reproduction, the vacancy of the planet, and the necessity of moving people around to fill its empty spaces change? Sussman addresses these questions through readings of texts by Malthus, Milton, Swift, Defoe, Goldsmith, Sir Walter Scott, Mary Shelley, and others, and by placing these authors in the context of debates about scientific innovation, emigration, cultural memory, and colonial settlement.

Sussman argues that a shift in thinking about population and mobility occurred in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. Before that point, both political and literary texts were preoccupied with "useless" populations that could be made useful by being dispersed over Britain's domestic and colonial territories; after 1760, a concern with the depopulation caused by emigration began to take hold. She explains this change in terms of the interrelated developments of a labor theory of value, a new idea of national identity after the collapse of Britain's American empire, and a move from thinking of reproduction as a national resource to thinking of it as an individual choice. She places Malthus at the end of this history because he so decisively moved thinking about population away from a worldview in which there was always more space to be filled and toward the temporal inevitability of the whole world filling up with people.

An Analysis of Thomas Robert Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population【電子書籍】[ Nick Broten ]

Thomas Robert Malthus’ 1798 Essay on the Principle of Population helped change the direction of economics, politics, and the natural sciences with its reasoning and problem solving.

The central topic of the essay was the idea, extremely prevalent in the 18th and 19th centuries, that human society was in some way perfectible. According to many thinkers of the time, mankind was on a course of steady improvement with advances set to continuously improve society and life for all. Malthus was a skeptic on this point, and, in a clear example of the skill of reasoning, set about constructing and marshalling a strong argument for a less optimistic view.

Central to his argument were the laws of population growth and their relationship to growth in agricultural production; in his view the former would always outstrip the latter. This provided a strong argument that society was limited by finite resources ? a closely reasoned argument that continues to influence economists, politicians and scientists today, as well as environmental movements. While Malthus’ proposed solutions have been less influential, they remain an excellent example of problem solving, offering a range of answers to the problem of population growth and finite resources.

Debating Malthus A Documentary Reader on Population, Resources, and the Environment【電子書籍】[ Paul S. Sutter ]

For centuries, thinking about the earth's increasing human population has been tied to environmental ideas and political action. This highly teachable collection of contextualized primary sources allows students to follow European and North American discussions about intertwined and evolving concepts of population, resources, and the natural environment from early contexts in the sixteenth century through to the present day.

Edited and introduced by Robert J. Mayhew, a noted biographer of Thomas Robert Malthusーwhose Essay on the Principle of Population (1798), excerpted here, is an influential and controversial take on the topicーthis volume explores themes including evolution, eugenics, war, social justice, birth control, environmental Armageddon, and climate change. Other responses to the idea of new "population bombs" are represented here by radical feminist work, by Indigenous views of the population-environment nexus, and by intersectional race-gender approaches. By learning the patterns of this discourse, students will be better able to critically evaluate historical conversations and contemporary debates.

Limits Why Malthus Was Wrong and Why Environmentalists Should Care【電子書籍】[ Giorgos Kallis ]

This critical study “artfully explores the power of limits . . . A compellingーand fittingly conciseーread for our times” (Kate Raworth, author of Doughnut Economics).

Western culture is infatuated with the dream of endless economic growth, even as it is haunted by the specters of drought, famine, and nuclear winter. How did we come to think of the planet and its limits as we do? This book reclaims, redefines, and makes an impassioned plea for limitsーa notion central to environmentalismーclearing them from their association with Malthusianism and the ideology and politics that go along with it.

In Limits, Giorgos Kallis offers a critical reassessment of economist Thomas Robert Malthus and his legacy. He separates the concepts of limits and scarcity, which have long been conflated in both environmental and economic thought. Limits are not a property of nature to be deciphered by scientists, but a choice that confronts us, one that, paradoxically, is part and parcel of the pursuit of freedom.

Taking us from ancient Greece to Malthus, from hunter-gatherers to the Romantics, from anarchist feminists to 1970s radical environmentalists, Limits shows us how an institutionalized culture of sharing can make possible the collective self-limitation we so urgently need.

An Essay on the Principle of Population【電子書籍】[ T. R. Malthus ]

The first major study of population size and its tremendous importance to the character and quality of society, this polemic examines the tendency of human numbers to outstrip their resources. Pivotal in establishing the field of demography, it remains crucial to understanding modern problems with food production and distribution.
Anglican parson Thomas Robert Malthus wrote his famous essay in 1798 in response to speculations on social perfectibility aroused by the French Revolution. Because human powers of procreation so greatly exceed the production of food, Malthus explained, population will always exceed available resources, and many will inevitably live at the ragged edge of subsistence. His simple yet powerful argument ー demonstrating that scarcity and inequality arise even in a society purged of all unjust laws and institutions ー was highly controversial in its day. Many of Malthus' contemporaries despised him for dashing their hopes of social progress, and the grim logic of his "population principle" led Thomas Carlyle to dub economics "the dismal science."
Today, Malthus' name is practically synonymous with active concern about demographic and ecological prospects, and his classic remains ever relevant to issues of social policy, theology, evolution, and the environment.

T. R. Malthus's 'An Essay on the Principle of Population' is a seminal work in the field of classical economics. Published in 1798, Malthus argues that population growth will inevitably outpace food production, leading to widespread misery and poverty. His grim predictions were controversial at the time but have since become influential in the fields of economics and sociology. Malthus's writing style is clear and concise, making complex economic theories accessible to a wide audience. The book's focus on the relationship between population growth and resources provides valuable insight into the challenges facing modern societies. Malthus's work is essential reading for anyone interested in the intersection of economics and demographics. Thomas Robert Malthus was a British economist and demographer who lived from 1766 to 1834. His observations of social conditions during the Industrial Revolution informed his theories on population growth. Malthus's background in theology and political economy shaped his unique perspective on the factors influencing societal development. His work continues to influence discussions on sustainability and resource management. I highly recommend 'An Essay on the Principle of Population' to readers interested in economic theory, sociology, and environmental studies. David Ricardo

David Ricardo and Thomas Malthus made essential contributions to classical economics and they have been called the most influential classical economist along with Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and John Stuart Mill.

Malthus founded the population theory of classic economics. He said that population will increase in an exponential way. On the other hand, food supply can only increase to a certain point due to the limitation of land productivity and other factors. Are Malthus's ideas totally irrelevant today? Not at all. The fact remains that the world population keeps increasing, and will keep increasing. What is the solution?

From their first meeting in 1811, there was little of that in political economy Malthus and Ricardo agreed on.

Regarding the Corn Law in 1815, Ricardo and Malthus were on opposite sides of the free-trade issue. Ricardo viewed rent as a socially unnecessary payment at the expense of profits and therefore argued vigorously in favor of free trade.

However, Malthus argued that higher corn prices were in the interests of the workers since the workers' purchasing power was closely tied to the price of corn. Malthus took the opposite stand and argued in favor of the Corn Law.

Malthus and Ricardo also disagreed on economic method. Ricardo treated costs as the determinant of value where a single variable, labor, became the only significant one. Malthus insisted on incorporating Ricardo's cost analysis into a supply-and-demand framework. Malthus’s approach to address value question was two aspects. The first was an explanation of exchange value; the second, an explanation of the measure of value.

In addition to the disagreements, Ricardo and Malthus do share the same view about population. Ricardo also said the same thing about the population as Malthus that population kept expanding, eventually there was not enough food to go around, and economic growth would stop. Together they led to economics being called "the dismal science."

Ricardo’s work also influenced Henry George, one of the great American economists. Henry George pioneered property tax concept through his book Progress and Poverty and influenced the profits of millions of American people.

This is a must-read book for people who are also interested in the deepest thoughts and views about the core economic subjects such as value, profit, wages, population, and prices by David Ricardo and Thomas Malthus, two of the greatest economic thinkers on the planet.

Raumplanung, Note: 1,0, Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin (Geographisches Institut), Veranstaltung: Seminar, 7 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im Jahr 1798 ver?ffentlichte der Theologe Thomas Robert Malthus in London zun?chst anonym das 'Essay on the Principle of Population as it Affects the Future Improvement of Society, with Remarks on the Speculations of Mr. Godwin, M. Condorcet, and Other Writers'.

Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) was a leading figure in the British classical school of economics, best-known for extending the insights of Adam Smith at a time of revolutionary improvements in agriculture and industry. This book explores the way in which he accounted for the tendency to overpopulation, the exhaustion of arable land and the deficiency of effective demand.

Malthus relied on historical and empirical evidence in the spirit of Bacon and Hume, but also backed up his data with a priori hypotheses that link him to his contemporary, David Ricardo. Malthus was strongly in favour of free trade, the minimal State, the gold standard and the abolition of poverty relief. Always a pragmatist, however, he was just as much in favour of public education, contra-cyclical public works and a safety net of tariffs and bounties to encourage national self-sufficiency with regard to food. He was both an economist and a clergyman and saw the two roles as interconnected. Malthus believed that a benevolent Deity had created vice and misery in order to shake human beings out of their natural indolence that would otherwise have condemned them to still greater distress.

This title provides a clear and comprehensive examination of Malthus’s economic and social thought. It will be of interest to students and scholars alike.

From Malthus to the Club of Rome and Back Problems of Limits to Growth, Population Control and Migrations【電子書籍】[ Paul Neurath ]

This collection of articles on population growth spans 20 years of the author's thinking and research on a wide range of issues. The book opens with a presentation of the early history of demography before Thomas Malthus wrote his essay on the principles of population (1798) that marked the beginnings of modern demography as a science. The author follows up with a chapter on the estimates made at various times in the past hundred years about the maximum number of people who could live on earth. Four papers deal with the debates about global models of population growth and the limits to growth. Sharp swings in population policy in China from the Communist Revolution under Mao in 1949 to the one child-per-family rule in 1979 are also considered. Another chapter compares population policy in Japan, China and India. A chapter is devoted to the role of oil and the soaring price of this basic input into agriculture as a constraint on food production and, as a result, on population growth. A closing chapter considers the great migrations of the 19th and 20th centuries, including the transatlantic and transpacific movements, the mass migrations after World Wars I and II, and those of recent decades. This book will interest scholars and students in economics and other social sciences dealing with the issues of demography, population growth, and economic development.

Thomas Malthus

8. The Grounds of an Opinion on the Policy of Restricting the Importation of Foreign Corn ? Thomas Malthus

Thomas Robert Malthus was the founding father of population theory of classical economics and his most well-known work AN ESSAY ON THE PRINCIPLE OF POPULATION was initially published in 1798. Malthus was often misinterpreted, but his views became popular again in the 20th century with the advent of Keynesian economics.

Malthus made essential contributions to classical economics and he has been called the most influential classical economist along with Adam Smith, John Keynes, Karl Marx, and John Stuart Mill. John Keynes called him the "first of the Cambridge economists". In The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, Keynes praised Malthus's understanding of an economy's difficulties in maintaining full employment.

Malthus founded the population theory of classic economics. He told the world that population would increase in an exponential way. On the other hand, food supply could only increase to a certain point due to the limitation of land productivity and other factors. Are Malthus's ideas totally irrelevant today? Not at all. The fact remains that the world population keeps increasing, and will keep increasing.

An Inquiry into the Nature and Progress of Rent was Malthus’s work to address rent and its regulation that they were favourite subjects of Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and Karl Marx.

Definitions in Political Economy was the last work published in his lifetime. Malthus’s intension of writing the book was to end to multiple uses of terminology which usually led to unnecessary differences of opinion among economists. Having established four basic rules for defining and applying terms, Malthus shows how these are followed or violated by economists, including Smith, Say, Ricardo, James Mill, McCulloch and Bailey.

Definitions in Political Economy is still significant as an early contribution to the methodology of economics to clear terminological confusion.

Malthus’s work also influenced Charles Darwin and John Keynes, two of the greatest thinkers. Charles Darwin pioneered evolution theory through his book On the Origin of Species and his theory influenced not only biology but also economics and sociology.

This is a must-read book for people who are also interested in the deepest thoughts and views about the core economic subjects such as population, supply & demand, employment, and government roles by Thomas Malthus, one of the greatest thinkers on the planet.

The Malthus Pandemic【電子書籍】[ Terry Morgan ]

Armed with an unusually vague remit from a new client, an American biotechnology company, to investigate the theft of valuable research material but motivated largely by a private desire to see a Thai girlfriend, Anna, he travels to Bangkok for an infectious diseases conference. Here, he discovers that several virologists have also disappeared. One of them, David Solomon, is known for extreme views on the need for direct action to reduce the world's population.

As the investigation deepens he rapidly uncovers a sinister plot to deliberately spread a deadly new virus, the Malthus A virus, specifically created by Solomon. But Solomon needs funds and help to spread it.

With sporadic outbreaks of the disease already in Thailand, Nigeria and Kenya, Capelli finds two other characters - Doctor Larry Brown, an American doctor working at the USA Embassy in Nigeria, and Kevin Parker, an academic and expert on the history and economics of population control - have also arrived at similar conclusions but from different angles.

Calling on help from another colleague, Colin Asher - a London based private investigator - it soon becomes clear that Solomon is being supported by a rich American with a history of fraud, embezzlement and murder and a secretive Arab healthcare company with a ready-made international distribution network. Their plan: To help spread the Malthus A virus and make huge profits by marketing ineffective or counterfeit drugs.

But with his cover blown by the murder of another colleague, the charismatic Kenyan detective Jimmy Banda, and with increasing fears that the virus is about to be released Capelli, Anna and his colleagues face another problem - persuading UK and USA politicians and the international agencies responsible for bioterrorism and commercial crime, to believe them and respond in time.
