Part-Time for All A Care Manifesto【電子書籍】[ Jennifer Nedelsky ]
|

An innovative view of how everyone doing part-time work and part-time caregiving would promote flourishing families, free time, equality, and the true value of care. The way that Western countries approach work and care for others is fundamentally dysfunctional. The amount of time spent at work places unsustainable stress on families, particularly in the face of rising inequality, while those who perform care are underpaid and their labor undervalued. In Part-Time for All, Jennifer Nedelsky and Tom Malleson propose a plan to radically restructure both work and care. As such, they offer a solution to four pressing problems: the inequality of caregivers; family stress from competing demands of work and care; chronic time scarcity; and policymakers who are ignorant about the care that life requires--the care/policy divide. Nedelsky and Malleson argue that no capable adult should do paid work for more than 30 hours per week, so that they can contribute substantial amounts of time to unpaid care for family, friends, or other "communities of care." While the authors focus primarily on human-to-human care, they also include care for the earth as a vital part of this shift. All of the elements of Nedelsky and Malleson's proposal already exist piecemeal in various countries. What is needed is to integrate the key reforms and scale them up. The result is an actionable plan to motivate widespread take-up of part-time work and part-time care. Highlighting how these new norms can create synergies of institutional transformation while fostering a cultural shift in the value of care and work, this "care manifesto" identifies the deep changes that are needed and lays out a feasible path forward.

In this third volume of his award-winning American Crisis series, James Gustave Speth makes his boldest and most ambitious contribution yet. He looks unsparingly at the sea of troubles in which the United States now finds itself, charts a course through the discouragement and despair commonly felt today, and envisions what he calls America the Possible, an attractive and plausible future that we can still realize.

The book identifies a dozen features of the American political economyーthe country's basic operating systemーwhere transformative change is essential. It spells out the specific changes that are needed to move toward a new political economyーone in which the true priority is to sustain people and planet. The Capitalist Manifesto【電子書籍】[ Louis O. Kelso ]
|

In 1956, a U.S. lawyer-economist, Louis O. Kelso, created the employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) to enable the employees of a closely held newspaper chain to buy out its retiring owners. Two years later, Kelso and his co-author, the philosopher Mortimer J. Adler, explained the macro-economic theory on which the ESOP is based in this best-selling book, The Capitalist Manifesto.
"When you read this book, you must be prepared for a shockーparticularly if you are among the millions of Americans who feel complacent about the material well-being that now prevails in this country. THE CAPITALIST MANIFESTO will compel you to examine, reconsider and question many dangerous economic factors and political tendencies you have accepted as inevitableーand will show you how you can do something about them.
"THE CAPITALIST MANIFESTO sets the alarm for all American citizensーnot simply one group or class. It is for stockholders, workers, labor leaders, corporation executives, investment bankers, taxpayers, small businessmen and industrialists, statesmen, legislators, judges and educators. Its purpose is to arouse us to the real and present dangers we now face, from inflation and from the progressive socialization of our economy. What is the difference between a well-heeled existence in a welfare state and the good life in a free society? THE CAPITALIST MANIFESTO will tell you what that difference is, and why you must be a man of property in order to be a free man. It will explain the meaning of your ever-expanding opportunities for leisure. It will tell you that the goal of an industrial society should not be full employment in the production of wealth, but full enjoyment of the wealth produced. It will tell you how you, as an individual, can best use wealth to further the happiness and well-being of yourself and your fellow men."
"A revolutionary force in human affairs offering still unplumbed promise for the future…."ーTime Magazine

Tracing Modernity Manifestations of the Modern in Architecture and the City【電子書籍】[ Mari Hvattum ]
|

First published in 2004. Walter Benjamin famously defined modernity as “the world dominated by its phantasmagorias”. The chapters in this book focus on one such phantasmagoria, namely that of ‘modernity’ itself. From the late seventeenth century until today, the ‘modern’ has served as a key category by which to understand an ever-changing present. Art and architecture have played a key role in this pursuit as the means by which the modern was to manifest itself. The aim of this anthology is to trace the modern project through its multifarious manifestations, in order to understand contemporary culture in a deeper sense than facile discussions of modernism and post-modernism often grant. Drawing on architectural and urban history as well as philosophy and sociology, the chapters outline the complex and conflicting roots of modernity by tracing its manifestations in architecture and the city. The book is divided into three parts, each exploring a distinct aspect of modernity. While part one scrutinizes the much-abused concepts of ‘modernity’ , ‘modernism’ and ‘the modern’ , parts two and three look at the manifestations of the modern in architecture and the city respectively. Focusing particularly on the transition between historicism and modernism, the chapters offer a re-interpretation of early modern architectural and urban culture as it came to expression in people such as Cerda, Semper, B?tticher, Scott, Baudelaire, the Goncourt brothers, Benjamin, Warburg, Kracauer, Mackintosh, Behrens, Taut, and Le Corbusier. For all their differences, these were thinkers and practitioners whose undisputed modernity arose from a deep preoccupation with history. A re-reading of their legacy may throw light on the neglected reciprocity between modernity and its historical conditions of becoming.

Towards a New Manifesto【電子書籍】[ Theodor Adorno ]
|

Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer wrote the central text of "critical theory", Dialectic of Enlightenment, a measured critique of the Enlightenment reason that, they argued, had resulted in fascism and totalitarianism.

Towards a New Manifesto shows the two philosophers in a uniquely spirited and free-flowing exchange of ideas. This book is a record of their discussions over three weeks in the spring of 1956, recorded with a view to the production of a contemporary version of The Communist Manifesto. A philosophical jam-session in which the two thinkers improvise freely, often wildly, on central themes of their work-theory and practice, labor and leisure, domination and freedom-in a political register found nowhere else in their writing. Amid a careening flux of arguments, aphorisms and asides, in which the trenchant alternates with the reckless, the playful with the ingenuous, positions are swapped and contradictions unheeded, without any compulsion for consistency. A thrilling example of philosophy in action and a compelling map of a possible passage to a new world. This new edition contains two texts on needs by Adorno and Horkheimer that have been translated for the first time or have been difficult to access.

The Melancholia of Class A Manifesto for the Working Class【電子書籍】[ Cynthia Cruz ]

What does it mean to be working-class in a middle-class world? Cynthia Cruz shows us how class affects culture and our mental health and what we can do about it -- calling not for assimilation, but for annihilation.

To be working-class in a middle-class world is to be a ghost. Excluded, marginalised, and subjected to violence, the working class is also deemed by those in power to not exist. We are left with a choice between assimilation into middle-class values and culture, leaving our working-class origins behind, or total annihilation.

In The Melancholia of Class, Cynthia Cruz analyses how this choice between assimilation or annihilation has played out in the lives of working-class musicians, artists, writers, and filmmakers ー including Amy Winehouse, Ian Curtis, Jason Molina, Barbara Loden, and many more ー and the resultant Freudian melancholia that ensues when the working-class subject leaves their origins to “become someone,” only to find that they lose themselves in the process.

Part memoir, part cultural theory, and part polemic, The Melancholia of Class shows us how we can resist assimilation, uplifting and carrying our working-class origins and communities with us, as we break the barriers of the middle-class world. There are so many of us, all of us waiting. If we came together, who knows what we could do.

A Measure for Measures A Manifesto for Empirical Sociology【電子書籍】[ R Pawson ]
|

First Published in 2004. This challenging and pioneering work aims to provide a measure (a set of standards) for measures (empirical data) in sociological research. It argues that the critique of positivism has resulted in a methodological impasse. Criticism has pulled the rug from under positivist method but left nothing in its place. In a devastating and systematic critique the author rejects phenomenological and relativist objections to sociological measurement. A wholly new model for the empirical substantiation of sociological theory is developed based on an examination of scientific measurement techniques and a reading of realist philosophical principles. Unlike many books heralding a new direction in sociology, A MEASURE FOR MEASURES goes beyond meta-theory, providing detailed examples to show how the 'new realism' can provide a viable empirical method.

This Could Be Our Future A Manifesto for a More Generous World【電子書籍】[ Yancey Strickler ]
|

A vision for building a society that looks beyond money and toward maximizing the values that make life worth living, from the cofounder of Kickstarter.

Western society is trapped by three assumptions: 1) That the point of life is to maximize your self-interest and wealth, 2) That we're individuals trapped in an adversarial world, and 3) That this is natural and inevitable. These ideas separate us, keep us powerless, and limit our imagination for the future. It's time we replace them with something new.

This Could Be Our Future is about how we got here, and how we change course. While the pursuit of wealth has produced innovation and prosperity, it also established an implicit belief that the right choice in every decision is whichever option makes the most money. The answer isn't to get rid of money; it's to expand our concept of value. By assigning rational value to other values besides money--things like community, purpose, and sustainability--we can refocus our energies to build a society that's generous, fair, and ready for the future. By recalibrating our definition of value, a world of scarcity can become a world of abundance.

Hopeful but firmly grounded, full of concrete solutions and bursting with creativity, This Could Be Our Future brilliantly dissects the world we live in and shows us a road map to the world we are capable of making.

The No-State Solution A Jewish Manifesto【電子書籍】[ Daniel Boyarin ]

**A provocative manifesto, arguing for a new understanding of the Jews’ peoplehood

“A self-consciously radical statement that is both astute and joyous.”ーKirkus Reviews**

Today there are two seemingly mutually exclusive notions of what “the Jews” are: either a religion or a nation/ethnicity. The widespread conception is that the Jews were formerly either a religious community in exile or a nation based on Jewish ethnicity. The latter position is commonly known as Zionism, and all articulations of a political theory of Zionism are taken to be variations of that view.

In this provocative book, based on his decades of study of the history of the Jews, Daniel Boyarin lays out the problematic aspects of this binary opposition and offers the outlines of a differentーand very oldーanswer to the question of the identity of a diaspora nation. He aims to drive a wedge between the “nation” and the “state,” only very recently conjoined, and recover a robust sense of nationalism that does not involve sovereignty.

On the Duty of Civil Disobedience A Manifesto for Peaceful Resistance and Moral Autonomy【電子書籍】[ Henry David Thoreau ]
|

In "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience," Henry David Thoreau articulates a profound and compelling argument for individual resistance to civil government when it perpetuates injustice. Written in 1849, this essay employs a clear and persuasive prose style that resonates with the American transcendentalist movement, emphasizing the moral obligation to act uprightly against institutional wrongdoing. Thoreau critiques the government'??s complicity in slavery and the Mexican-American War, urging citizens to prioritize conscience over legislation. The work is a seminal text in political philosophy and civil rights literature, encouraging thinkers to reconcile personal ethics with societal structures. Henry David Thoreau was deeply influenced by his transcendentalist beliefs, a movement that sought to explore the relationship between the individual and nature. His experiences, including his time spent living in solitude at Walden Pond, instilled in him a profound awareness of self-reliance and the importance of individual moral agency. Thoreau's resistance to the social injustices of his day propelled him to articulate a framework for civil disobedience, asserting that confinement to law must not supersede moral imperatives. This remarkable essay remains a timeless beacon for activists and scholars alike. Thoreau'??s call to uphold justice against oppressive systems is as relevant today as it was in the 19th century, making this book an essential read for those who seek to understand the interplay of morality and governance. Through this work, readers are invited to engage with the concepts of ethical responsibility and courage in the face of societal norms.

Capital (Das Kapital) Vol. 1-3: Complete Edition - Including The Communist Manifesto, Wage-Labour and Capital, & Wages, Price and Profit【電子書籍】[ Karl Marx ]
|

Karl Marx's 'Capital' (Das Kapital) is a seminal work of political economy that delves into the complex relationship between labor, value, and capital in capitalist societies. Written in a comprehensive and analytical style, Marx explores the ways in which capitalism exploits the proletariat for the benefit of the bourgeoisie, highlighting the inherent contradictions within the system. Drawing from a wide range of sources, including classical economics and philosophy, Marx presents a scathing critique of the capitalist mode of production and calls for a revolutionary reorganization of society. 'Capital' is a cornerstone of Marxist theory and has had a lasting impact on social and political thought. Its historical context in the wake of the Industrial Revolution adds depth to its analysis of the economic structures of the time. Karl Marx, a German philosopher and economist, was influenced by the social inequalities and injustices of the 19th century, leading him to develop his theories on capitalism and socialism. His dedication to understanding and challenging the power dynamics of his time fueled his writing of 'Capital'. I highly recommend 'Capital' to readers interested in exploring the foundations of Marxist thought and gaining insights into the critique of capitalism that remains relevant today.

Mastering Civility A Manifesto for the Workplace【電子書籍】[ Christine Porath ]

"The most useful, well-written, and emotionally compelling business book I have read in years. I couldn't put it down." -- Robert I. Sutton, Stanford Professor and author of The No Asshole Rule

"A must-read for every leader in their field." -- Daniel H. Pink, bestselling author of To Sell is Human

Incivility is silently chipping away at people, organizations, and our economy. Slights, insensitivities, and rude behaviors can cut deeply. Moreover, incivility hijacks focus. Even if people want to perform well, they can't. Customers too are less likely to buy from a company with an employee who is perceived as rude. Ultimately, incivility cuts the bottom line.

In Mastering Civility, Christine Porath shows how people can enhance their influence and effectiveness with civility. Combining scientific research with fascinating evidence from popular culture and fields such as neuroscience, medicine, and psychology, this book provides managers and employers with a much-needed wake-up call, while also reminding them of what they can do right now to improve the quality of their workplaces.

"Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex."

Outrageous and violent, SCUM Manifesto was widely lambasted when it first appeared in 1968. Valerie Solanas, the woman who shot Andy Warhol, self-published the book just before she became a notorious household name and was confined to a mental institution. But for all its vitriol, it is impossible to dismiss as the mere rantings of a lesbian lunatic. In fact, the work has proved prescient, not only as a radical feminist analysis light years ahead of its time-predicting artificial insemination, ATMs, a feminist uprising against underrepresentation in the arts-but also as a stunning testament to the rage of an abused and destitute woman.

In this edition, philosopher Avital Ronell's introduction reconsiders the evocative exuberance of this infamous text.

MIND OVER THOUGHT The New Secret To Manifestation【電子書籍】[ James M. Brand ]
|

At the time of this writing, you may not be acquainted with my qualifications, such as other books that I have written, and my life experiences. So, to present to you this incredible book, let me explain a portion of my background.

I am an entrepreneur. To be further specific, an “online” entrepreneur. I have created a few online companies in which turned out to become multimillion-dollar enterprises. From my success, my wife and I have lived a wonderful life. We are, and I am a self-made success. I had established my first business in the early 1980s when I was twenty years of age. And of course, there was no internet then, at least not like we recognize it now.

Fast-forward to 1997. The internet began to evolve at a rapid pace and developed into an all-new market for infinite opportunities. So, I merged my existing non-online business into an online success, therefore creating a small fortune on a considerable broader scale.

After several years I had opened other online businesses and still are multi-million-dollar success stories.

What was shocking was during 2016 - 2019, I started receiving visions granted to me in the construct of thoughts. These thoughts were transmitted in my dreams and somewhat telepathically. I do not like using that word in a sense, but I do not know how else to interpret it. It is almost like another variant of myself; a higher variant of myself was summoning me to disclose this knowledge to the World.

You understand we are all that is and ever has been, and forever will be from the way we feel and think. We are the creation of our thoughts. I do not mean this to sound clich? by mimicking any other theories and beliefs of the new age concepts on the “Laws of Attraction,” “Mind-Power,” “Positive Thinking,” and related subjects. Yet, the topics mentioned above really are only possible through the thoughts that we generate.

Unlike other works written about the importance of our thoughts, they serve not to include what you are about to learn here. You realize, every thought has its own individual vibrational frequency. And the frequencies are transmitted into the Universe. Thus, the Universe is reacting to these thought frequencies, proportionately, transmitting similar frequencies back to you via the Universe. We are creating our own state of mind, our own state of being, thus creating our current state of consciousness. Therefore, we are the creators of our own reality, whether it is good, bad, or indifferent.

What if I told you that we were all digital beings, or DB, living in a digital World, or DW. And that we are living in a Holographic Universe, or, HU, all a part of a giant computer-like simulation, therefore being a Simulated Holographic Universe or, SHU? Now, how preposterous is that?

Ok, so this seems absurd and sounds like science fiction. Yet, if you could travel back in time, like the 1700s or the 1800s, and tell someone that we sent men to the moon what they would think? Or, if you tried explaining to them about telephones, cell phones, television, the internet, computers, space travel, and that we could even fly, they would laugh at you and possibly have you locked up in an insane asylum, right?

Prepare for a rabbit hole of a quantum awakening.

You are going to discover and learn the following:

This Is What We Are And How It All Works

? We are residing in a Simulated Holographic Universe.

? We are living Digital Biological Beings.

? We are advanced beings with more power and ability than any quantum computer in existence now and in the subsequent.

? We are all Digital Spiritual Beings.

? We are all connected to the Universe.

? We are Eternal Consciousness.

? We are all connected via the Simulated Holographic Universe, thereby making us as one universal consciousness.

? We are the formulation of all that forever was, in the present, and that will forever be.

? We are an ongoing formulation of our own realities.

? We have the power to create any reality that we elect.

? In a sense, we are our own gods!

You, Will, Learn The Following

? You are the creation of your own thoughts.

? The new secret to manifesting everything and anything that you desire and aspire.

? How to turn negative thoughts and adverse situations into positive ones.

? What to avoid that can influence your thoughts, therefore altering your life.

? How to take charge of your thoughts, the way you think, and the way you feel about matters.

? The Laws of Attraction Explained Correctly!

? How Every Thought Affects The Laws of Attraction!

? How to think like the most advanced quantum computer that has ever existed and manipulate the pre-set programming, already built within the Simulated Universe, thus changing the programming to suit your own reality.

? You may take control of your thoughts and manifest the reality that you want.

An essential how-to for crafting a guiding motto that sets intentions, increases creativity, and helps accomplish your goals, from Stanford University's world-renowned Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, aka the d.school.

We all need agency to feel the power and joy of acting in the face of challenge and opportunity. But we also need humility and restraint to ensure that we guard against hubris and harm. We need trusted and testable navigation tools to give us confidence in our creative power and cautiousness in carrying out our work. Instead of looking for answers, what we are all seeking are tools for navigating the increasingly complex, noisy, conflicted culture that we inhabit. A personal manifesto is one of those tools.

In You Need a Manifesto, Charlotte Burgess-Auburn, the d.school's director of community, first defines the challenges of information overload we all experience today. Then she explains the importance of creating a personal mantra or motto to use in the face of daily tasks and roadblocks, walking you through the steps of creating more purpose in your work.

Explanations and hands-on design-based exercises are interwoven with vibrant quotes and excerpts from a curated collection of designers, artists, writers, scientists, and social activists. These quotes serve both as inspiration and material for the activities.

Each chapter of the book is also preceded by a graphic by artist and letterpress printer Rick Griffith, who created his illustrations in response to the material in each chapter, to guide and inspire you to see what you can produce for yourself.

|

** PRE-ORDER LENNY HENRY'S NEW AUTOBIOGRAPHY RISING TO THE SURFACE NOW **

Sir Lenny Henry rang up the Office for National Statistics to confirm something he'd been thinking about for a long time. They told him that only 29.5% of the United Kingdom's population is made up of white, heterosexual, able-bodied men; so, he wonders, why do they still make up the vast majority of people we see in our media?

Joining forces with the former Chair of the Royal Television Society's Diversity Committee Marcus Ryder, he draws on decades of experience to reveal why recent efforts to diversify media have been thus far ineffective, and why they are simply not enough. With wit, humour and unflinching gravitas they analyse the flaws of current diversity initiatives, point out the structural and financial imbalances working against the cause, and provide clear solutions to get the media industry back on track.

Access All Areas is an urgent, actionable manifesto that will dramatically shift the debate around diversity and the media.

In "The Origin and Ideals of the Modern School," Francisco Ferrer Guardia presents a pioneering critique of traditional educational methods, advocating for a secular, rational, and progressive pedagogy. Written in the early 20th century, this text reflects the burgeoning ideals of the anarchist movement in Spain, interweaving educational philosophy with political theory. Ferrer's literary style is both didactic and impassioned, utilizing accessible language to engage a broad audience while challenging the norms of contemporary educational practices. His vision of education emphasizes individual liberty and critical thinking, arguing for a curriculum grounded in science and the arts rather than dogma. Manifesto of the Communist Party【電子書籍】[ Karl Marx ]
|

"Manifesto of the Communist Party" is an 1848 political document by German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Commissioned by the Communist League and originally published in London just as the Revolutions of 1848 began to erupt, it was later recognized as one of the world's most influential political documents. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and then-present) and the conflicts of capitalism and the capitalist mode of production, rather than a prediction of communism's potential future forms. "Manifesto of the Communist Party" summarizes Marx and Engels' theories concerning the nature of society and politics and briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism. In its last paragraph, the authors call for a "forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions", which served as a call for communist revolutions around the world.
