The precise date of the introduction of Christianity into Edessa is not known. However, there is no doubt that even before AD 190 Christianity had spread vigorously within Edessa and its surroundings and that (shortly after 201 or even earlier?) the royal house joined the church. According to a legend first reported by Eusebius in the 4th century, Armenian King Abgar V Uk?m? was converted by Addai, who was one of the seventy-two disciples, sent to him by "Judas, who is also called Thomas". Yet various sources confirm that the Abgar who embraced the Christian faith was Abgar IX. Under him Christianity became the official religion of the kingdom. As for Addai, he was neither one of the seventy-two disciples as the legend asserts, nor was sent by Apostle Thomas, as Eusebius says, but a missionary from Judea who evangelized Mesopotamia about the middle of the 2nd century, and became the first bishop of Edessa. Under Roman domination many martyrs suffered at Edessa, including St. Barsamya, who was martyred during the reign of the Roman emperor Decius around 113 A.D. In the meanwhile Christian priests from Edessa had evangelized Eastern Mesopotamia and Persia, and established the first Churches in the kingdom of the Sassanids. Atill?ti?, Bishop of Edessa, assisted at the First Council of Nicaea (325). The Peregrinatio Silviae (or Etheriae) gives an account of the many sanctuaries at Edessa about 388. The story begins in the tiny rural community of Santa Ana where Toribio was born and grew up, and traces his journey from poverty to priesthood in the Archdiocese of Guadalajara.＜/p＞＜p＞It describes his struggle to get schooling in a place that had no schools and everyone was illiterate, his interest in Pope Leo Xlll's encyclical Rerum Novarum and the trouble that got him into with conservative pastors and wealthy parishioners, his experience as a parish priest during the Cristero war when catechists were being hung from telegraph poles and his bishop was running the archdiocese from a hideout in the hills, his brutal murder by federal troops in February 1928 in a remote canyon outside the town of Tequila where he was ministering to the people in hiding. Fr. Romo was canonized as a martyr by Pope John Paul ll in 2000.＜/p＞＜p＞This booklet is an interesting read for anyone who is unaware of what Mexican Catholics suffered south of our border not so many years ago. It is of particular interest to Northern California Catholics because some 300 of the saint's relatives live in the Sacramento area, and a relic of the saint is enshrined in the altar of the newly restored Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament--the only such example in the U.S.＜/p＞＜p＞Saint Toribio is already well known to Mexican immigrants across the U.S., many of whom see him as their savior at a time when increased security has made smuggling immigrants across the U.S.-Mexican border more deadly. Making a detailed analysis of 48 terrorist attacks carried out by 80 suicide terrorists, the book introduces two new theories. The first argues that most of these men first engaged in Islamist extremism as an alternative to substance abuse. The second contends that, following a five-stage process of radicalisation, cognitive dissonance triggered guilt, shame, and remorse over previous misconduct. From this emotional distress, suicide terrorism emerged as a rational choice ahead of either suicide or a return to active addiction.
