|

The Martian, by George du Maurier, is a largely autobiographical novel published in 1898 and the author's third. It describes the life of Barty Josselin as told by his close friend Robert Maurice, starting from their school days in Paris in the 1850s. Barty Josselin and Robert Maurice are English boys attending the Institution F. Brossard, in Paris. Barty is "a handsome, high-spirited, mischievous, and gifted fellow, thoroughly practical, yet with traits that have in them a strange idealism." After finishing school, they return to England, where Barty spends some time in the army, but resigns. His vision fails, and he travels seeking help with it, becoming suicidal. He learns in a dream that he has a kind of guardian spirit Martia, a female spirit from Mars, who communicates with him and offers him guidance. She inspires him to a successful career as an author.

Trilby is set in the 1850s in an idyllic bohemian Paris. The late nineteenth-century novelist George Gissing read the "notorious" novel in May 1896 with "scant satisfaction". Enchanted Cornwall: My Pictorial Memoir【電子書籍】[ Daphne du Maurier ]
|

Completed shortly before her death in 1989, this is Daphne du Maurier's personal memoir, the story of how in Cornwall she found herself as a writer and as a person.

Illustrated with 78 colour and black-and-white photographs, including many from the author’s personal collection, this is the story of a magical relationship between an extraordinary woman and the spirit of a place. It will have special significance for millions who have enjoyed her books and want to know more about this very private author.

Here is the story of what led her to write Rebecca, which recentlywon the W H Smith Nation’s Favourite Book Competition ahead of novels by Dickens, Austen, Orwell and the Bront?s. Here is what moved Daphne to write My Cousin Rachel, made into one of 2017’s must-see movies, and what in her personal life led to Jamaica Inn, Frenchman’s Creek, The House on the Strand, The Birds and many other of her best-known stories, which have also been filmed.

Here is a book for all to enjoy: her readers, those who have enjoyed her films, and lovers of beauty and enchantment everywhere.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Daphne du Maurier was born in London in 1907, the second daughter of Sir Gerald and Lady Muriel du Maurier. He was the leading actor manager of the day, and Daphne grew up in a wildly imaginative Peter Pan world peopled by writers and actors, J M Barrie (known as Uncle Jim) included.

In 1926, at Barrie's suggestion, Daphne travelled with her mother and two sisters, Angela and Jeanne, to Fowey in Cornwall and her life was immediately transformed. The place and its people inspired her to write her first novel, The Loving Spirit, which so affected a young major in the Grenadier Guards, later Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Browning, that he travelled to Fowey in his boat, Ygdrasil (The Tree of Fate), to meet its author. They later married.

Numerous books followed, the most enduring being the Cornish works, including the multi-million selling Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, Frenchman's Creek, The King's General, My Cousin Rachel, and The Birds.

Dame Daphne died on April 19, 1989, at home at Kilmarth, her house set high on the cliffs, near Par, in Cornwall.

Including the brilliantly frightening short story that inspired Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece, this collection from the author of Rebecca is a classic work of alienation and horror.

The chilling stories in this collection echo a sense of dislocation and mock man's dominance over the natural world. A mountain paradise promises immortality, but at a terrible price; a neglected wife haunts her husband in the form of an apple tree; a professional photographer steps out from behind the camera and into his subject's life; a date with a cinema usherette leads to a walk in the cemetery; and a jealous father finds a remedy when three's a crowd ...

"Continually provokes both pity and terror ...
Both in her novels and her memoirs, Daphne du Maurier revealed an ardent desire to explore her family's history. In Myself When Young, based on diaries she kept between 1920 and 1932, du Maurier probes her own past, beginning with her earliest memories and encompassing the publication of her first book and her marriage. Often painfully honest, she recounts her difficult relationship with her father, her education in Paris, her early love affairs, her antipathy towards London life, and her desperate ambition to succeed as a writer. The resulting self-portrait is of a complex, utterly captivating young woman.

"An intimate view of a creative personality...as richly evocative as any of her novels."-Los Angeles Times
