The Price of Defiance James Meredith and the Integration of Ole Miss【電子書籍】[ Charles W. Eagles ]

When James Meredith enrolled as the first African American student at the University of Mississippi in 1962, the resulting riots produced more casualties than any other clash of the civil rights era. Eagles shows that the violence resulted from the university’s and the state’s long defiance of the civil rights movement and federal law. Ultimately, the price of such behavior ー the price of defiance ー was not only the murderous riot that rocked the nation and almost closed the university but also the nation’s enduring scorn for Ole Miss and Mississippi. Eagles paints a remarkable portrait of Meredith himself by describing his unusual family background, his personal values, and his service in the U.S. Air Force, all of which prepared him for his experience at Ole Miss.

Poems of George Meredith【電子書籍】[ George Meredith ]

The Snowdrop is the prophet of the flowers;? It lives and dies upon its bed of snows;? And like a thought of spring it comes and goes,? Hanging its head beside our leafless bowers.? The sun's betrothing kiss it never knows,? Nor all the glowing joy of golden showers;? But ever in a placid, pure repose,? More like a spirit with its look serene,? Droops its pale cheek veined thro' with infant green.? Queen of her sisters is the sweet Wild Rose,? Sprung from the earnest sun and ripe young June; The year's own darling and the Summer's Queen!? Lustrous as the new-throned crescent moon.? Much of that early prophet look she shows,? Mixed with her fair espoused blush which glows,? As if the ethereal fairy blood were seen;? Like a soft evening over sunset snows,? Half twilight violet shade, half crimson sheen.? Twin-born are both in beauteousness, most fair? In all that glads the eye and charms the air;? In all that wakes emotions in the mind? And sows sweet sympathies for human kind.

My Flesh Is Meat Indeed A Nonsacramental Reading of John 6:51-58【電子書籍】[ Meredith J.C. Warren ]

Readers have long puzzled over the absence from the Johannine “Last Supper” of any words by Jesus over bread and wineーsuggesting to some that John is indifferent or even hostile to sacramental thought or actionーand the apparent dislocation to the feeding miracle, in John 6, of Jesus’ declaration that believers must eat his flesh. Meredith J. C. Warren argues that in fact, the “bread of life” discourse in John 6:51c-58 does not bear any Eucharistic overtones. Rather, John plays on shared cultural expectations in the ancient Mediterranean world about the nature of heroic sacrifice and the accompanying sacrificial meal, which established the identification of a hero with a deity. From Homer and continuing through Greek romances like Chaereas and Callirhoe, An Ephesian Tale, Leucippe and Clitophon, and An Ethiopian Story, Warren traces a literary trope in which a hero or heroine’s antagonistic relationship with a deity is resolved through the sacrifice of the hero. She argues that seen against this milieu, Jesus’ insistence that his flesh be eaten serves to demonstrate his identity and confirms the Christology of the rest of the Gospel.
