Evolution of Cardio-Metabolic Risk from Birth to Middle Age The Bogalusa Heart Study【

That precursors of adult coronary artery disease, hypertension, and type II diabetes begin in childhood have been clearly established by the Bogalusa Heart Study. This unique research program has been able to follow a biracial (black/white) population over 35 years from childhood through mid-adulthood to provide perspectives on the natural history of adult heart diseases. Not only do these observations describe trajectories of cardio-metabolic risk variables leading to these diseases but provide a rationale for the need to begin prevention beginning in childhood. The trajectories of the burden of cardio-metabolic risk variables in the context of their fetal origin and chromosome telomere dynamics provide some insight into the metabolic imprinting in utero and aging process. The observed racial contrasts on cardio-metabolic risk variables implicate various biologic pathways interacting with environment contributing to the high morbidity and mortality from related diseases in our population. To address the seriousness of the onset of cardiovascular disease in youth, approaches to primordial prevention are described focussing on childhood health education as an important aspect of Preventive Cardiology.

Recent Progress in Medicinal Plants (Metabolic Disorders Hypertension)【電子書籍】[ Anita Bhardwaj ]

Medicinal plants are value added for the content and chemical composition of their active components. Therefore, the demand on plant based therapeutics has increased many fold in both developing and developed countries due to the growing recognition that they are natural products, being non-narcotic, having no side-effects, easily available at affordable prices. In a wider context, there is a growing demand for plant-based medicines, health products, pharmaceuticals, food supplements, cosmetics etc. International market of medicinal plants is over US $ 60 billion per year, which is growing at the rate of 7% and expected to be US $ 5 trillion by 2050. Herbal remedies would become increasingly important especially in developing countries. Progress in medicinal plants research has undergone a phenomenal growth during last two decades. The input of biochemistry to pharmacology has grown. Molecular pharmacology puts more emphasis on the mode of action of drugs. Worldwide trend towards the utilization of natural plant remedies has created an enormous need for information about the properties and uses of the medicinal plants. Based on this rationale, the present series Recent Progress in Medicinal Plants brought out eight volumes, in the first phase, providing edited information from over 225 original and review papers by eminent scientists and researchers from India and abroad on a wide range of topics in the areas of Ethno medicine, Pharmacognosy, Photochemistry, Pharmacology, Aesthetics, Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering, Crop Improvement, Production Technology, Trade and Commerce, Diseases and their Management etc. In continuation to these foregone efforts, further eight volumes (9-16) viz., Plant Bioactive in Traditional Medicine; Phototherapeutics; Drug Development from New Molecules; Globalization of Herbal Health; Search for Natural Drugs; Biopharmaceuticals; Natural Products; Phytomedicines, providing recent research data in the areas of medicinal plants investigations, aimed at discovering new drugs of plants origin, were presented. Continuing with the ongoing efforts and over-whelming response, the Series editors have been hard pressed to bring out further nine volumes (Vols: 17-25) of the series on herbal drugs containing recent researches on bioreactive components based on their photochemistry and psychopharmacology in order to discover potential drugs coupled with their therapeutic values. In this direction, nine volumes (17-25) on Photochemistry and Pharmacology III, Natural Products II, Psychopharmacology and Therapeutic Values I, II, III, IV & V, Standardization of Herbal / Ayurvedic Formulations and Chemistry and Medicinal Value were published. Thus the publication of 25 volumes of "Recent Progress in Medicinal Plan ts" (2002-2009) provides a comprehensive account of nearly 1800 important medicinal plants for producing drugs, cosmetics, perfumery etc. Hence, it was felt that there is an urgent need to document these 25 volumes in a more condensed form for scientist's desk reference in day to day research activity. Considering the importance of such a resource book, it was planned to bring out Vol. 26 containing the abstracts of papers published in 25 volume-set of Recent Progress in Medicinal Plants. The Vol. 26- "Cumulative Index to Abstracts, Vols. 1-25"- provides information on some 1282 abstracts of original and review papers published in the aforesaid volumes. Considering the fact that many traditional remedies are back to therapeutic use, including plants as such, or extracts prepared in accordance with the pharmacopoeia of the country where they are used. These medicinal plants are increasingly used as (i) source of direct therapeutic agents; (ii) as a raw material base for the elaboration of more complex semi-synthetic chemical compounds; (iii) as models for new synthetic compounds; and, (iv) as taxonomic markers for the discovery of new compounds. In addition to these applications in developed countries, naturally, the medicinal plants will continue to be used increasingly in developing countries, where they are a traditional source of medicine for generations. This has created renewed interest of scientists in medicinal plants and research is at phenomenal rate. We have received excellent studies for publication. It was, therefore, felt desirable to bring out further Volumes of the series, covering recent global updates in medicinal plants researches. This includes 3 specialized Vols (Vol. 36-38) on Essential Oils. Learning, recently, the intense research activities in biotechnology, pharmacology and biochemical actions and the rapid increase of knowledge in the field of traditional medicine, it appeared desirable to bring further specialized volumes on Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering II (Vol. 39), Flavonoids and Antioxidants (Vol. 40), Analytical and Processing Techniques (Vol. 41), Nutraceutical and Functional Foods (Vol. 42) and Phototherapeutics II & III (Vols. 43 & 44).The Chief Editor Dr. J N Govil was hard pressed by Academicians, Researchers, Industries & Relevant Govt. Agencies to further bring disease-oriented volumes in the Series. Considering the great demand, the editors have brought out four volumes on Metabolic Disorders. Two volumes on Diabetes I & II (Vols 45 & 46), while one volume each on Hyperlipidemia (Vol. 47) and Hypertension (Vol. 48) publication of these volumes incorporating the articles contributed by eminent scholars over the globe in the field of Medicinal Plants will definitely be useful by way of providing latest upcoming advances and developments in the field of Herbal Drugs. It is hoped these volumes will open new vistas of knowledge and the information presented will lead to further research in the discovery of new drugs of natural origin and serve as good source of material for future work.

Regulation of Primary Metabolic Pathways in Plants【

Over the past decade, advances in molecular biology have provided the impetus for a resurgence of interest in plant metabolism. At a general level, the potential for modifying the quantity or quality of harvestable crop products through genetic manipulation has provided an agronomic rationale for seeking a greater understanding of primary plant metabolism and its regulation. Moreover, the now facile techniques for transformation of many plant species and the consequential capacity to manipulate the amounts of specific individual enzymes within specific cell types provides an exciting direct approach for studying metabolic problems. Such transgenic plants are also becoming invaluable tools in studies at the interface between metabolism and other sub-disciplines such as physiology and ecology. The interest generated in plant metabolism by these developments has also encouraged the re-introduction of more conventional biochemical techniques for metabolic analysis. Finally, in common with other areas of cell biology, the wealth of information that can be obtained at the nucleic acid level has provided the stimulus for identification and characterisation of metabolic processes in far greater detail than previously envisaged. The result of these advances it that researchers now have the confidence to address problems in plant metabolism at levels not previously attempted. This book presents the proceedings of an international conference held on 9-11 January 1997 at St Hugh's College, Oxford under the auspices of the Phytochemical Society of Europe.

Insulin Resistance The Metabolic Syndrome X【

Gerald Reaven, the discoverer of Syndrome X, and a panel of world-class investigators thoughtfully summarize our current understanding of how insulin resistance and its compensating hyperinsulinemia play a major role in the pathogenesis and clinical course of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease-the so-called diseases of Western civilization. These distinguished authorities detail, for the first time, the pathophysiological consequences and the clinical syndromes, excluding Type 2 diabetes, related to insulin resistance. They also examine the genetic and lifestyle factors that contribute to the wide differences in insulin action that exist in the population at large. Timely and authoritative, Insulin Resistance: The Metabolic Syndrome X illuminates the full importance of insulin resistance as a major cause of hypertension, heart disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome.

The Metabolic Plan Stay Younger Longer【電子書籍】[ Stephen Cherniske ]

The choice is yours: You can add forty or more vigorous, fulfilling years to your life. It sounds like science fiction, but in fact it’s cutting-edge science grounded in exciting new research. In The Metabolic Plan, internationally renowned biochemist Stephen Cherniske reveals the medical breakthroughs that enable all of us to extend our livesーand the quality of our livesーstarting today.

After years of dedicated study and research that took him to six continents, Cherniske has arrived at a new paradigm that radically alters our understanding of the aging process and the human potential for longevity. Far from giving out due to inevitable wear and tear, the human body is naturally endowed with astonishing powers of renewal, self-repair, and regeneration. The secret to unlocking these powers lies not in genetic tinkering or a high-tech fix, but in outsmarting mother nature at her own game.

As Cherniske explains, a simple adjustment in your metabolism can profoundly alter your energy level, strength and stamina, your body’s ability to fight disease, even the intensity of your sexual desire and fulfillment. In short, by following his regime, you can essentially “trick” your body into adopting the metabolism of a twenty-year-old. The Metabolic Plan takes you step-by-step through the process of natural rejuvenation. Here is a comprehensive diet and exercise plan specifically tailored to boost antioxidant levels, combat disease, increase muscle, reduce fat, and enhance memory and vision. Cherniske shares the age-defying properties of such cutting-edge supplements as 7-Keto and debunks myths about acid/alkaline foods. Here too are detailed metabolic plans geared to the different needs of men and women and to every decade of our livesーso we’ll know exactly what to focus on when.

Longer life, more energy, improved health, a pervasive sense of well-being: it sounds too good to be true, but it’s all within our grasp. At once revolutionary and eminently practical, this is the book that finally solves the puzzle of aging.

The X. European Symposium on Calcified Tissues took place in Hamburg from 16th to 21 st September 1973. The financial backing came from the Gesund heitsbehorde der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg (President Dr. Zylmann), the Bundesministerium fur Jugend, Familie und Gesundheit, and from industry. This made it possible to carry out the scientific program, to invite several European and non-European scientists, and to organize a social program designed to establish personal contact between delegates and to make visitors acquainted with our country. In the name of the organizing committee, we herewith express our warmest appreciation of all the help given to us. Professor Bartelheimer, as the representative of the Medical Faculty and on behalf of the President of the University of Hamburg, welcomed the Parti cipants in the symposium to our city. The history of these meetings began in Oxford in 1963, with the First European Bone and Tooth Symposium, organized by H. J. J. Blackwood, B. E. C. Nordin, and Dame Janet Vaughan. The idea was to found in Europe an institution simi lar to the American Gordon Research Conferences of Bone and Tooth. After the U. K. , the host countries were Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Italy, Israel and Austria. The second symposium in Liege already bore the present name.
