Twilight of the Idols【電子書籍】[ Friedrich Nietzsche ]
|

Twilight of the Idols was written in just over a week, between 26 August and 3 September 1888, while Nietzsche was on holiday in Sils Maria. As Nietzsche's fame and popularity were spreading both inside and outside Germany, he felt that he needed a text that would serve as a short introduction to his work. Originally titled A Psychologist's Idleness, it was renamed Twilight of the Idols or How to Philosophize with a Hammer.

The former title, G?tzen-D?mmerung in German, is a pun on the title of Richard Wagner's opera, G?tterd?mmerung, or 'Twilight of the Gods'. G?tze is a German word for "idol" or "false god". Walter Kaufmann has suggested that in his use of the word Nietzsche might be indebted to Francis Bacon.

Extrait :
|

Nietzsche's Justice Naturalism in Search of an Ethics【電子書籍】[ Peter R. Sedgwick ]
|

In Nietzsche's Justice, Peter Sedgwick takes the theme of justice to the very heart of the great thinker's philosophy. He argues that Nietzsche's treatment of justice springs from an engagement with the themes charted in his first book, The Birth of Tragedy, which invokes the notion of an absolute justice grasped by way of artistic metaphysics. Nietzsche's encounter with Greek tragedy spurs the development of an oracular conception of justice capable of transcending rigid social convention. Sedgwick argues that although Nietzsche's later writings reject his earlier metaphysics, his mature thought is not characterized by a rejection of the possibility of the oracular articulation of justice found in the Birth. Rather, in the aftermath of his rejection of traditional accounts of the nature of will, moral responsibility, and punishment, Nietzsche seeks to rejuvenate justice in naturalistic terms. This rejuvenation is grounded in a radical reinterpretation of the nature of human freedom and in a vision of genuine philosophical thought as the legislation of values and the embracing of an ethic of mercy. The pursuit of this ethic invites a revaluation of the principles explored in Nietzsche's last writings. Smart, concise, and accessibly written, Nietzsche's Justice reveals a philosopher who is both socially embedded and oriented toward contemporary debates on the nature of the modern state.

Ecce Homo How One Becomes What One is【電子書籍】[ Friedrich Nietzsche ]

In late 1888, only weeks before his final collapse into madness, Nietzsche (1844-1900) set out to compose his autobiography, and Ecce Homo remains one of the most intriguing yet bizarre examples of the genre ever written. In this extraordinary work Nietzsche traces his life, work and development as a philosopher, examines the heroes he has identified with, struggled against and then overcome - Schopenhauer, Wagner, Socrates, Christ - and predicts the cataclysmic impact of his 'forthcoming revelation of all values'. Both self-celebrating and self-mocking, penetrating and strange, Ecce Homo gives the final, definitive expression to Nietzsche's main beliefs and is in every way his last testament.

Hey, Nietzsche! Leave Them Kids Alone!【電子書籍】[ Craig Schuftan ]

Hey! Nietzsche! Leave them Kids Alone! Why do goths wear black? Why do rock singers make that 'jesus' shape on stage? Why do songs about death and despair make us feel good? And why can't you get no satisfaction? According to Craig Schuftan, it all began about two hundred years ago. HEY, NIEtZSCHE! is the first book to uncover the hidden roots of rock and roll in the romantic movement. Schuftan picks up a clue in My Chemical Romance's 'Welcome the Black Parade', and follows it into a world where Keats meets the Cure, Wordsworth hangs with Weezer, and Byron exchanges haughty glances with Bowie. From Schopenhauer's darkest days to Queen's greatest hits, HEY, NIEtZSCHE! is a wild ride through the nineteenth century with the best mix-tape in the world on the car stereo.

|

5 maggio 1882.

The Antichrist【電子書籍】[ Friedrich Nietzsche ]
|

“Let us not be led astray: they say ‘judge not’ and yet they condemn to hell whoever stands in their way.”

The Antichrist by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, was originally published in 1895. In it, Nietzsche expresses his dissatisfaction with modernity, listing his dislike of “lazy peace”, “cowardly compromise”, “tolerance” and “resignation”. Mankind, according to Nietzsche, is corrupt and its highest values are depraved because nihilistic values dominate under the holiest names. He asserts that "all the values in which mankind at present summarizes its highest desiderata are decadence values". Mankind is depraved because it has lost its instincts and prefers what is harmful to it.

Nietzsche puts forth a provocative critique of Christianity and its moral teachings as he argues that mankind, out of fear, has bred a weak, sick type of human. He blames Christianity for demonizing strong, higher humans. He feels that Christian values are life-denying and impede human progress and advocates instead for a philosophy that affirms life and individual autonomy.

Nietzsche introduces his concept of “will to power using its relation to define the notions of good, bad, and happiness. Good is whatever augments the feeling of power, the will to power and power itself, in man. Evil is whatever springs from weakness. Happiness is the feeling that power increases…that resistance is overcome.

Nietzsche claims to have written the book for a very limited readership who must be honest in intellectual matters in order to understand the book. They must be strong enough to endure Nietzsche’s seriousness and passion.

The Birth of Tragedy【電子書籍】[ Friedrich Nietzsche ]

Key themes and ideas in "The Birth of Tragedy" include:Apollonian and Dionysian: Nietzsche introduces the concepts of the Apollonian and Dionysian as two opposing artistic principles. The Apollonian represents the rational, ordered, and harmonious aspects of art, while the Dionysian embodies the irrational, ecstatic, and chaotic elements. He argues that Greek tragedy was born out of the fusion of these two principles, creating a profound and intense artistic experience.Art and Suffering: Nietzsche sees art as a response to the suffering and the fundamental contradictions of human existence. He believes that tragedy, in particular, confronts the tragic aspects of life and provides a way for individuals to cope with the inherent pain and complexities of existence. The Tragic Hero: Nietzsche examines the role of the tragic hero in Greek drama, emphasizing the hero's ability to affirm life in the face of its inherent sufferings and contradictions. The tragic hero's acceptance of life's duality allows for the affirmation of existence and the experience of profound joy in the midst of suffering.

Posttraumatic Joy A Seminar on Nietzsche’s Tragicomic Philosophy of Life【電子書籍】[ Matthew Clemente ]
|

Posttraumatic Joy presents the major themes and ideas of Nietzsche’s corpus from a continental and psychoanalytic perspective with a particular bent toward how they might illuminate ways of coping with and living beyond trauma and suffering. Through a series of transcribed and edited lecturesーoriginally delivered as a part of the "Nietzsche for Clinicians" workshop run through the Center for Psychological Humanities and Ethics at Boston Collegeーthis work traces the genesis of such fundamental psychoanalytic concepts as repression, the death drive, and the Oedipus complex to the works of one of philosophy’s most audacious and original thinkers. Reading Nietzsche not as a philosopher in the traditional sense, but as a proto-psychoanalyst, a precursor to Freud and Lacan, this work explores his understanding of the origins of morality, the value of sublimation, the movement from mourning to melancholiaーor, in Nietzsche’s terms, from trauma to tragedyーand the possibility of a life lived in affirmation and self-overcoming.

This interdisciplinary book will be of interest to scholars and practitioners whose work intersects with continental philosophy and theoretical and philosophical psychology. This includes any psychotherapist, social worker, psychoanalyst, or pastoral counselor with an interest in understanding the deeply psychological philosophy of one of history’s greatest thinkers.

Jung's Seminar on Nietzsche's Zarathustra Abridged Edition【
|

Nietzsche's infamous work Thus Spake Zarathustra is filled with a strange sense of religiosity that seems to run counter to the philosopher's usual polemics against religious faith. For some scholars, this book marks little but a mental decline in the great philosopher; for C. G. Jung, Zarathustra was an invaluable demonstration of the unconscious at work, one that illuminated both Nietzsche's psychology and spirituality and that of the modern world in general. The original two-volume edition of Jung's lively seminar on Nietzsche's Zarathustra has been an important source for specialists in depth psychology. This new abridged paperback edition allows interested readers to participate with Jung as he probes the underlying meaning of Nietzsche's great work.

BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL ON THE GENEALOGY OF MORALS【電子書籍】[ Fredrich Nietzsche ]

BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL
Special Edition
Two Book Set
Includes

BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL

ON THE GENEALOGY OF MORALS
By Fredrich Nietzsche

BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL
Synopsis
Beyond Good and Evil is a comprehensive overview of Nietzsche's mature philosophy. The book consists of 296 aphorisms, ranging in length from a few sentences to a few pages. These aphorisms are grouped thematically into nine different chapters and are bookended by a preface and a poem. While each aphorism can stand on its own, there is also something of a linear progression between aphorisms within chapters and from one chapter to another. Nonetheless, each aphorism presents a distinctive point of view, and even the individual chapter summaries omit a great deal.

The preface accuses philosophers of dogmatism, and the first chapter explores this claim. Every great philosophy, Nietzsche asserts, is little more than the personal confession. Philosophers build up complex systems of thought to justify their own assumptions and prejudices. If we can dig these out, we can see what these philosophers value most deeply, and so gain insight into their character.

Nietzsche contrasts their dogmatism with the "free spirit" that is not caught up in a particular point of view. He hopes the philosophers of the future will be characterized by such an experimental method, willing to try out any hypothesis, and follow any argument all the way to its conclusion.

After a discussion of the religious spirit, which he claims is a kind of dogmatism, Nietzsche embarks on a series of epigrams, most of which highlight our bizarre psychological make-up. Next, he looks at the long history of moral systems as a set of different attempts at self- overcoming. He speaks out strongly against the morality of the "herd" that encourages a dull mediocrity in all. He finds such a mediocrity in modern scholarship, which is overly concerned with digging up dry, dull facts. Nietzsche's ideal philosopher creates meaning and values, and does not simply deal with empty facts.

Nietzsche asserts that there is an "order of rank" according to which the spiritual strength of all people can be measured. Because of this difference between people, it would be absurd to apply one moral code to all people. Nietzsche suggests that the strongest people are marked by a cruelty to themselves, according to which they mercilessly expose their every prejudice and assumption in order to dig more deeply into themselves. At bottom, however, everyone has prejudices. To prove this point, Nietzsche launches an eight-page tirade against women.

Next, he addresses the question of nationalities and nationalism, drawing on a kind of Lamarckism that sees different nationalities or "races" as inherently having certain characteristics. Among other things, Nietzsche attacks anti- Semitism, criticizes the English, and advances the concept of the "good European," who rises above nationalist sentiment to find true individuality.

The final chapter presents Nietzsche's conception of "what is noble": a solitary, suffering soul, who has risen so far above the common rabble as to be unrecognizable and totally misunderstood by them. He closes the book with a weak poem about such a noble soul sitting on a mountaintop wishing he had more friends.

Source
www.sparknotes.com/philosophy/beyondgood/summary/

ON THE GENEALOGY OF MORALS
Synopsis
On The Genealogy of Morals is made up of three essays, all of which question and critique the value of our moral judgments based on a genealogical method whereby Nietzsche examines the origins and meanings of our different moral concepts.

The first essay, "'Good and Evil,' 'Good and Bad'" contrasts what Nietzsche calls "master morality" and "slave morality." Master morality was developed by the strong, healthy, and free, who saw their own happiness as good and named it thus. By contrast, they saw those who were weak, unhealthy, and enslaved as "bad," since their weakness was undesirable. By contrast, the slaves, feeling oppressed by these wealthy and happy masters, called the masters "evil," and called themselves "good" by contrast.

The second essay, "'Guilt,' 'Bad Conscience,' and the like" deals with (surprise, surprise) guilt, bad conscience, and the like. Nietzsche traces the origins of concepts such as guilt and punishment, showing that originally they were not based on any sense of moral transgression. Rather, guilt simply meant that a debt was owed and punishment was simply a form of securing repayment. Only with the rise of slave morality did these moral concepts gain their present meanings. Nietzsche identifies bad conscience as our tendency to see ourselves as sinners and locates its origins in the need that came with the development of society to inhibit our animal instincts for aggression and cruelty and to turn them inward upon ourselves.

The third essay, "What is the meaning of ascetic ideals?" confronts asceticism, the powerful and paradoxical force that dominates contemporary life. Nietzsche sees it as the expression of a weak, sick will. Unable to cope with its struggle against itself, the sick will sees its animal instincts, its earthly nature, as vile, sinful, and horrible. Unable to free itself from these instincts, it attempts to subdue and tame itself as much as possible. Nietzsche concludes that "man would rather will nothingness than not will."
Reference
www.sparknotes.com/philosophy/genealogyofmorals/summary/

File information:
File size (Digital) (378kb)
Books (2)
Biography (Yes)
Page count (8.5x11) (292)
Word count (118,665)
Font size (12pt)

This book contains now several HTML tables of contents that will make reading a real pleasure! Friedrich Nietzsche's "The Antichrist" might be more aptly named "The Antichristian," for it is an unmitigated attack on Christianity that Nietzsche makes within the text instead of an exposition on evil or Satan as the title might suggest. In "The Antichrist," Nietzsche presents a highly controversial view of Christianity as a damaging influence upon western civilization that must come to an end. Regardless of ones religious or philosophical point of view, "The Antichrist" makes for an engaging philosophical discourse.
