In reviewing the gradual evolution of the Zionist idea over such a wide field, I could not restrict the meaning of the term “Zionism” to the Zionist Movement and Organization of the present day. I had to go back to the beginning of this idea, and to extend the meaning of “Zionism” to all aspirations and efforts tending in the same direction. There was in these aspirations, undoubtedly, a diversity of reasons and methods which continues to this day. It is the object of the present work to trace these various currents of the idea so that the reader, passing from period to period, and from section to section, may become acquainted with their relative value and their influence upon one another. In this book I have striven more especially to consider the attitude of the English people towards Zionism, as revealed in the political history and in the literature of England. The Christian religious idea of the Restoration of Israel having been a subject of pre-eminent interest and importance and an influential factor in shaping public opinion in this country for many generations, the greatest care has been bestowed upon the investigation of this aspect, no less than on that relating to the support and encouragement which Zionism has received in England and in France merely on humanitarian or political grounds, apart from religious aspirations. While tracing in detail the growth of these sympathies, I have endeavoured to throw some light on the motives and sentiments appertaining to the most significant instances on record. He is called the Elkoshite; that is, a man from Elkosh, or, as it is sometimes written, Elkesi (ver. 1).＜br /＞ It is well known that there was an Assyrian village on the banks of the Tigris by this name; but Jerome states positively, when he retreated to Palestine from the turmoil of an unfriendly world, that he was shown the site of the Galilean Elkosh where Nahum was reported to have been born.＜br /＞ The prophecy of Nahum bears every evidence of having been delivered in the land prior to the death of Sennacherib, and, therefore, at least a century before the destruction of Nineveh, of which it mainly treats. He was in all likelihood contemporary with Isaiah, and uttered his poetic prediction in the reign of Hezekiah. Septuagint - Nahum【電子書籍】[ Scriptural Research Institute ] 楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア	＜p＞The Book of Nahum is generally considered one of the older surviving books of the Israelite Scriptures, with most scholars dating it to before the Torah was compiled, or at least heavily redacted in the time of King Josiah. Most scholars accept that Nahum was written by a prophet called Nahum between 663 and 656 BC, who was most likely from the town of Alqosh in northern Iraq, although some debate the location of his home town. His world was very different from the later Kingdom of Judea that emerged in the 2nd century BC, as the Israelites of his time were still polytheistic, worshiping the Canaanite gods, as well as statues of Yahweh, the God the Jews and Samaritans would later worship.＜/p＞＜p＞By Nahum’s time, Samaria had been conquered by the Assyrians, as had Egypt to the south, however the smaller Kingdom of Judah, located mostly in the modern Palestinian West Bank, had maintained its nominal independence. As he is reported to be from the town of Alqosh, in modern northern Iraq, his family must have been Samaritan. After the Assyrian Empire conquered the Samaritans in 720 BC, they dispersed the Samaritans throughout the empire in an attempt to assimilate them. The Kushites of modern Sudan, who the Greeks would later call Aethiopians, had ruled Egypt since 744 BC, however, were driven out of most of Egypt in 663 BC when the Assyrians sacked Thebes, called Amon in the Septuagint, and No Amon in the Masoretic Texts, ultimately derived from the Egyptian name N?t-?mn, meaning, City of Amun. According to multiple ancient sources, Thebes was plundered by the Assyrians and virtually abandoned for years until the new Libyan dynasty took control of the region in 656 BC and began rebuilding.＜/p＞＜p＞Nahum’s book is set during this era, after Thebes had been sacked, and presumably before rebuilding had begun. Some scholars debate this, suggesting that Nahum’s life was decades later, as the Assyrian Empire was collapsing around 612 BC. This is mainly due to his prophecy that Ninevah would be devastated like Thebes had been, which did happen in 612 BC, however, that does not mean the prediction was not made decades earlier. Nahum’s sentiment, that all empires eventually fall is a universal truth, and it is far more likely that he would have warned that Nineveh was going to end up like Thebes when that event was still fresh in everyone’s mind than decades later when there was more obvious evidence the Assyrian Empire was collapsing. In 1568 English exiles, many from Oxford, established the English College of Douay (Douai/Doway), Flanders, under William (later Cardinal) Allen. In October, 1578, Gregory Martin began the work of preparing an English translation of the Bible for Catholic readers, the first such translation into Modern English. Assisting were William Allen, Richard Bristow, Thomas Worthington, and William Reynolds who revised, criticized, and corrected Dr. Martin's work. The college published the New Testament at Rheims (Reims/Rhemes), France, in 1582 through John Fogny with a preface and explanatory notes, authored chiefly by Bristol, Allen, and Worthington. Later the Old Testament was published at Douay in two parts (1609 and 1610) by Laurence Kellam through the efforts of Dr. Worthington, then superior of the seminary. The translation had been prepared before the appearance of the New Testament, but the publication was delayed due to financial difficulties. The religious and scholarly adherence to the Latin Vulgate text led to the less elegant and idiomatic words and phrases often found in the translation. In some instances where no English word conveyed the full meaning of the Latin, a Latin word was Anglicized and its meaning defined in a glossary. Although ridiculed by critics, many of these words later found common usage in the English language. Spellings of proper names and the numbering of the Psalms are adopted from the Latin Vulgate.＜br /＞ In 1749 Dr. Richard Challoner began a major revision of the Douay and Rheims texts, the spellings and phrasing of which had become increasingly archaic in the almost two centuries since the translations were first produced. He modernized the diction and introduced a more fluid style, while faithfully maintaining the accuracy of Dr. Martin's texts. This revision became the 'de facto' standard text for English speaking Catholics until the twentieth century. It is still highly regarded by many for its style, although it is now rarely used for liturgical purposes.
