Ninety Percent of Everything Inside Shipping, the Invisible Industry That Puts Clothes on Your Back, Gas in Your Car, and Food on Your Plate【電子書籍】[ Rose George ]
|

Eye-opening and compelling, the overlooked world of freight shipping, revealed as the foundation of our civilization

On ship-tracking websites, the waters are black with dots. Each dot is a ship; each ship is laden with boxes; each box is laden with goods. In postindustrial economies, we no longer produce but buy. We buy, so we must ship. Without shipping there would be no clothes, food, paper, or fuel. Without all those dots, the world would not work.

Freight shipping has been no less revolutionary than the printing press or the Internet, yet it is all but invisible. Away from public scrutiny, shipping revels in suspect practices, dubious operators, and a shady system of "flags of convenience." Infesting our waters, poisoning our air, and a prime culprit of acoustic pollution, shipping is environmentally indefensible. And then there are the pirates.
Rose George, acclaimed chronicler of what we would rather ignore, sails from Rotterdam to Suez to Singapore on ships the length of football fields and the height of Niagara Falls; she patrols the Indian Ocean with an anti-piracy task force; she joins seafaring chaplains, and investigates the harm that ships inflict on endangered whales.
Sharply informative and entertaining, Ninety Percent of Everything reveals the workings and perils of an unseen world that holds the key to our economy, our environment, and our very civilization.

Disputation on the Power of Indulgences The Ninety-five Theses【電子書籍】[ Martin Luther ]
|

The Ninety-five Theses or Disputation on the Power of Indulgences are a list of propositions for an academic disputation written in 1517 by Martin Luther, professor of moral theology at the University of Wittenberg, Germany, that started the Reformation, a schism in the Catholic Church which profoundly changed Europe. They advance Luther's positions against what he saw as the abuse of the practice of clergy selling plenary indulgences, which were certificates believed to reduce the temporal punishment for sins committed by the purchasers or their loved ones in purgatory. In the Theses, Luther claimed that the repentance required by Christ in order for sins to be forgiven involves inner spiritual repentance rather than merely external sacramental confession. He argued that indulgences led Christians to avoid true repentance and sorrow for sin, believing that they could forgo it by purchasing an indulgence.

Ninety-Six Sermons: Volume Three: The Resurrection & The Sending of the Holy Ghost【電子書籍】[ Lancelot Andrewes ]
|

The present volume contains nineteen Discourses; the remainder of those preached on Easter-day, on our Lord’s Resurrection, and the whole series preached on Whit-Sunday, on the Sending of the Holy Ghost.

Of those on the Resurrection, the first four were preached before King James I. at Whitehall, between the years 1620 and 1623, both inclusive; and the last was only prepared for delivery on Easter-day 1624, but was never actually preached.

With respect to the subject-matter of these Sermons little need be said. The first three are occupied with a consideration of the great love and devotion displayed by St. Mary Magdalene, at the tomb of her Divine Master; together with a particular examination of the probable grounds which induced our blessed Saviour to repress her ardent zeal, and through her to inculcate upon us the necessity of spiritualizing our affections, and at the same time of reposing with implicit confidence upon Him, Who is at once our Father and our God.

The two last discourses in this series, from different texts, enforce the same practical lesson, namely, the obligation which is laid upon every Christian of making a suitable and correspondent return for the great blessings of salvation.

The Sermons preached on Whit-Sunday, on the Sending of the Holy Ghost, come next under consideration.

They are fifteen in number, and, with the exception of the last, were all preached before King James I. at Greenwich, Whitehall, Windsor, and Holy-rood House, between the years 1606 and 1621, both inclusive. The last, which was just excepted, was only prepared to be preached on Whit-Sunday 1622.

This series is particularly valuable for the light which it throws upon some of the very highest, and most mysteriousーand it may be added the most essentialーArticles of the Catholic Faith; and also for the arguments which it affords to the controversialist who combats the Socinian and other rationalistic heresies. Herein we have asserted, and established, the distinction of Persons and the unity of essence, in the Godhead,ーthe Divinity, personality, and agency of the Holy Spirit in particularーHis procession from the Father and the Son,ーHis three-fold comingーHis office, His works, His gifts, His place, in the economy of redemptionーthe power which He confers in Holy Ordersーthe danger of grieving Himーthe necessity of receiving HimーHis indwellingーthe comfort He imparts, the meetness with which He endues the soul for the inheritance of the Saints in glory. These, and other points of a similar character, form the substance of the above sermons; and it will at once be perceived on perusal that they are not merely speculative, but that they abound in practical applications to the consciences of individual Christians, such indeed as cannot easily be resisted, except in cases where the mind is inveterately prejudiced against the reception of the truth.

On the whole, it is hoped that these discourses may, in the full depth of their meaning, be blessed to the edification of those whom a false philosophy, or perhaps the mere pride of intellect, has unhappily influenced against the mysteries of Revelation, by satisfactorily shewing that there is nothing in them to prevent a rightly-constituted mind from still embracing and holding them fast, as forming a part of that sacred deposit of faith once given to the Saints, and entrusted to us for transmission to succeeding generations.

The Hebrew Quotations have for the most part been revised and corrected by the Rev. C. Seager, M.A. late Scholar of Worcester College, to whom the Editor is glad of having an opportunity of thus recording his obligations.

J. P. W.

Magdalene College.

Whit-Monday.

CrossReach Publications

With 2014 marking the celebration of 90 years of publication of the Jewish Transcript, the Pacific Northwest's oldest and longest publishing Jewish community newspaper, we decided to take a look back at our history to help you create your High Holiday menu. What you have on your digital reading device is every single High Holiday recipe published in the Jewish Transcript and JTNews (as it's now called) since 1924. As you'll see, there are plenty of years where we published no recipes at all (what on earth did people eat if they didn't have us?), but it's fascinating to look at how tastes have changed over the decades. Though sometimes, it seems, they didn't change at all. If you're in the mood for a honey cake, or a recipe for somebody else's grandmother's tzimmes, or even a simple challah, we've got them all here ー sometimes in multiples.

The Ninety-Five Theses Disputation on the Power of Indulgences【電子書籍】[ Martin Luther ]
|

In "The Ninety-Five Theses," Martin Luther presents a groundbreaking challenge to the ecclesiastical authority of the Catholic Church, focusing particularly on the sale of indulgences. Written in 1517, this seminal work employs a sharp, polemical style that combines theological rigor with a compelling rhetorical flair, reflecting the growing sentiment of discontent within the Church at the dawn of the Reformation. Luther's theses articulate a radical shift in understanding salvation, emphasizing faith over works and the authority of Scripture over church tradition, thus laying the intellectual foundation for Protestant theology and igniting a movement that would reshape the landscape of Christianity. Martin Luther, a German monk and theologian, emerged from a background deeply immersed in scholastic thought and biblical studies. His personal struggle with the question of salvation and his experiences within the church fueled his desire for reform. His disillusionment with the pervasive corruption and the commodification of faith led him to articulate his theses, initiating a theological revolution that resonated widely across Europe and altered the course of Western history. "The Ninety-Five Theses" is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the roots of Protestant reform and the profound impact of Luther's ideas on modern Christianity. It is not only a document of its time but also a vital exploration of faith's complexities, making it indispensable for scholars, theologians, and anyone interested in the history of religious thought.

The man among the monkeys; or, Ninety days in apeland Exploring the Thin Line Between Civilization and Savagery【電子書籍】[ L?on Gozlan ]
|

In "The Man Among the Monkeys; or, Ninety Days in Apeland," L√?on Gozlan deftly merges adventure and satire, crafting an imaginative narrative that explores the human condition through the lens of an anthropomorphic society of monkeys. The novel unfolds with a blend of rich, descriptive prose and humor, inviting readers into a fantastical world that parallels human societal norms and foibles. Gozlan's vivid portrayals and keen observational wit examine themes of civilization, morality, and the absurdity of social constructs, situated within the context of 19th-century French literature's growing interest in anthropology and the nature of humanity. L√?on Gozlan, a noted figure of his time, was recognized for his journalistic prowess and literary contributions that often reflected social critique and a fascination with the exotic. His experiences in travel and observation of diverse cultures likely inspired the premise of "Ninety Days in Apeland," providing him with a unique perspective on the parallels between human and animal societies. Gozlan's background in journalism is evident in his persuasive storytelling and insightful commentary, revealing the underlying absurdity of human behavior through satirical allegory. This book is a must-read for those intrigued by the intersection of humor, anthropology, and social critique in literature. Gozlan's clever narrative invites readers to reflect on their own societal practices while enjoying an engaging story filled with wit and wisdom. The novel stands as not only a testament to Gozlan's creativity but also as a timeless exploration of the themes that resonate with contemporary audiences.

Ninety-Six Sermons: Volume Four: The Conspiracy of the Gowries & The Gunpowder Plot【電子書籍】[ Lancelot Andrewes ]
|

This volume contains two separate and entire series of Sermons: the one, upon the Conspiracy of the Gowries, preached upon the fifth of August, consisting of eight Sermons; the other, upon the Gunpowder Treason, preached upon the fifth of November, consisting of ten.
The Sermons in the first series were delivered at intervals between the years 1607 and 1622, both inclusive, before King James I. at Rumsey, Holdenby, Burleigh near Oakham, in the Cathedral Church of Salisbury, and at Windsor. The last Sermon, for 1623, was only prepared to be preached, but was never actually delivered. The whole may be considered as exhibiting in a clear and distinct light, the original source and subsequent derivation of kingly power; the sacredness of the persons of princes, as the anointed of the Lord; the protection afforded them from above, in the discharge of their royal functions; the extreme and desperate wickedness of those who presume, on any pretence whatever, to rise up in rebellion against their authority; and the certainty of drawing down the Divine vengeance upon their heads, and upon their posterity, if they attempt to do so. The arguments in support of these views, are for the most part drawn from Holy Scripture, supported by the authority of Catholic Fathers, and the decrees of Councils.

The Sermons in the second series were all delivered at Whitehall, before King James I., between the years 1606 and 1618, both inclusive. They are in some respects similar to the preceding, particularly as regards the rights of Kings; and are mainly occupied in the consideration of God’s infinite mercy in preserving the King and Parliament from the atrocious designs of traitorous conspirators, and of the necessity of keeping up a thankful remembrance of this great deliverance; of the lesson to be learned from the rebuke given to the disciples, who would have called down fire from Heaven upon the Samaritans; of the divine commission with which Kings are entrusted by the King of Kings; of the duty of fearing God and the King, and avoiding the seditious; of the causes to which the failure of the conspiracy in question is attributable, and of the various duties, both public and private, consequent upon the experience of this signal act of mercy.
Such is a brief outline of these discourses; and as they are conversant with principles of scriptural and therefore unchanging truth, they are not of mere temporary interest, referring to past generations with which we have no connection; but are calculated for the instruction of all who are willing to submit to the divine guidance, in their public and social, as well as in their individual relations.

The Editor has to acknowledge his obligations to the Rev. C. Seager, M.A., formerly Scholar of Worcester College, and also to the Rev. J. B. Morris, M.A., Fellow of Exeter College, for revising the Hebrew quotations which have occurred in the course of this volume.

J. P. The Ninety-Five Theses and Other Writings【電子書籍】[ Martin Luther ]
|

For the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, a new translation of Martin Luther's most famous works by leading Luther scholar and pastor William Russell

This volume contains selections from Martin Luther's most evocative and provocative writings, freshly translated, for the 21st century. These documents, which span the Reformer's literary career, point to the enduring and flexible character of his central ideas. As Luther's reform proposals emerged, they coalesced around some basic priorities, which he delivered to wide-ranging audiences--writing for children, preaching in congregations, formulating academic treatises, penning letters to family and friends, counter-punching critics, summarizing Biblical books, crafting confessions of faith, and more. This book demonstrates that range and provides entry points, for non-specialists and specialists alike, into the thought and life of the epoch-defining, fascinating, and controversial Martin Luther. With attention to the breadth of his literary output, it draws from his letters, sermons, popular writings, and formal theological works. This breadth allows readers to encounter Luther the man: the sinner and the saint, the public activist and the private counselor, the theologian and the pastor. These writings possess a practical, accessible arc, as Luther does not write only for specialists and church officials, but he applies his chief insights to the "real-life" issues that faced his rather wide variety of audiences.

Ninety-Six Sermons: Volume One: The Nativity, Repentance & Fasting【電子書籍】[ Lancelot Andrewes ]
|

The text has been carefully reprinted from the second edition published in 1631, and it has throughout been collated with the editions of 1641 and 1661; but with the exception of a few verbal inaccuracies and obvious misprints, which have been corrected, it has not been deemed advisable, or indeed found necessary, to make the slightest alteration either in the style or in the arrangement of the author.

Much labour has been bestowed upon the marginal references to Scripture, many of which were found on examination to be exceedingly erroneous, and it soon became apparent that unless they were revised throughout, the reader would experience no ordinary difficulty in discovering the passages to which he was directed. They have accordingly been submitted to a rigid scrutiny, and the result has been such, that the editor is led to hope but few inaccuracies have escaped his observation. It must however be borne in mind, that in many cases the reference to Scripture is very slight, and almost imperceptible without the aid of the Vulgate, where a word or a phrase appears to have attracted the Bishop’s attention, and to have been marked by him more from its allusion, than from its actual relation, to the passage in question. Indeed, one or two instances might be named, where the allusion is so slight as to be scarcely traceable, but even here it has not been thought advisable to remove the reference; it is suffered to remain as it is found without alteration. But besides these, there are other instances, and those not a few, where quotations from Scripture occur without any reference whatever. Here however, in all cases of the least importance, the reader is referred to the sacred author quoted, and whenever this has been done, the reference itself is inclosed in brackets, to shew that for it the present editor is himself responsible.

The editor regrets that he has not been equally successful with all the quotations which are given from the Fathers, and other writers. Wherever any reference whatever is given to any part of their works, it has invariably been sought out and verified, but sometimes, where a Father of the Church is merely cited by name, and no particular Treatise is mentioned, it has been found impossible to discover the passage, especially where the quotation is made from such voluminous writers as Augustine and Chrysostom, and the sentiment is such as might have been expressed by a Christian writer of almost any age and country. In all cases however of importance, where the citation is not used merely by way of illustration, but in support of some primitive doctrine or usage, the greatest pains have been taken to find the passage, and in scarcely any instance of this nature has the result been otherwise than successful. It may be added, that when the exact passage quoted cannot with certainty be ascertained, the reader is occasionally referred to a parallel sentiment from the same author, which may perhaps after all have been the passage intended.

With respect to the quotations generally, and particularly those from Scripture, it will be found that they are scarcely ever given in the exact words of the author referred to, but that the sense or substance of a passage is for the most part rather quoted from memory, than given with that exactness which is usual in the present day This remark will be found to apply not merely to English, but to Latin and Greek quotations, and it would perhaps be difficult to point out many instances to the contrary.

The quotations from Scripture, whenever they appear to amount to more than a passing allusion, are distinguished by double commas, while translations from the Latin, with the exception of those from the Vulgate, are marked as semi-quotations, and are invariably distinguished by single ones.

CrossReach Publications

FROM THE BEST SELLING AUTHOR OF THE EMPTY RAINCOAT AND UNDERSTANDING ORGANISATIONS.

Over a span of seven decades, Charles Handy was, variously, a businessman, a writer, a philanthropist and a philosopher. Not even a stroke as he approached the age of 90 dimmed his intellectual curiosity or his immense zest for life.

In this, his final book, written from the vantage point of a contemplative old age and drawing on his articles for The Idler he shares his thoughts on the big questions with which we all grapple:

What things really matter?
What daily worries should we learn to treat as unimportant?
How do we become more accepting of ourselves and of those around us?
How do we discover purpose in our everyday existence? How do we cope with grief and loss?

Drawing in part on his own experience, in part on the wisdom of others, he sets out the principles of enjoying a fulfilled and contented life, and gently points the way to the practicalities of achieving it.

Life in general is comprised of a series of ups and downs. What life has thought me over the years is that whether one is experiencing either the upside or the downside of life, it is never permanent. Everything that we are faced with in this journey of life is just a season, and seasons have an expiry date. Nothing is permanent on this side of eternity, no matter how painful or how pleasant the season is I have learned that it passes. So, no matter what you are going through at the moment it shall come to pass in due season. But when the season pass you shall remain standing, especially if your life is anchored on a sure foundation of HOPE. As I typed this devotional day after day, the Lord impressed one thought on my mind, “You can Bounce Back” from any season. Never doubt the power of bouncing back. Resilience is in your DNA, you have been created to overcome and survive everything that life throws at you. In this Daily Devotional I pray that you find inspiration to Bounce Back from whatever life throws at you. Whether you choose to make it a morning or evening devotional I hope you are inspired. The Bounce back Daily Devotional will infuse your day or evening with a dose of inspiration.

|

CrossReach Publications

Ninety Degrees North The Quest for the North Pole【電子書籍】[ Fergus Fleming ]

The author of Barrow's Boys offers a fascinating look at the exploration of the Arctic in the nineteenth century.

Named a Best Book of the Year by the New York Times Book Review, the Seattle Times, Publishers Weekly, and Time

In the nineteenth century, theories about the North Pole ran rampant. Was it an open sea? Was it a portal to new worlds within the globe? Or was it just a wilderness of ice? When Sir John Franklin disappeared in the Arctic in 1845, explorers decided it was time to find out.

In scintillating detail, Ninety Degrees North tells of the vying governments (including the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and Austria-Hungary) and fantastic eccentrics (from Swedish balloonists to Italian aristocrats) who, despite their heroic failures, often achieved massive celebrity as they battled shipwreck, starvation, and sickness to reach the top of the world.

Drawing on unpublished archives and long-forgotten journals, Fergus Fleming recounts this riveting saga of humankind's search for the ultimate goal with consummate craftsmanship and wit.

"Barely a page goes by without the loss of a crew member or a body part . . . Ninety Humanists and the Ethical Transition of Britain The Open Conspiracy 1930-80【電子書籍】[ Callum G. Brown ]
|

This book re-writes the origins of the progressive 1960s. It argues that 94 leading British intellectuals, nearly all humanists, were inspired by H.G. Wells to amend the ethical laws of the nation under a banner of “The Open Conspiracy”.

Using a wealth of correspondence and other materials covering 1930 to 1980, Callum Brown identifies a new motivation behind ethical change. Whilst established narratives attribute most changes to youth revolt, the sex revolution and feminism, he shows how a humanist-led network realigned much of the British state to the principles of humanitarianism, the autonomy of the individual, and internationalism.

The author examines the network's campaigns and the work of individual intellectuals. High profile members come into focus, including Bertrand Russell, Julian Huxley, and Barbara Wootton. Highlighting the amazing breadth of the group's work, the book reveals 11 main areas of ethical ambition, ranging from abolishing world hunger, hanging, child beating and women's entrapment in abusive marriages, to nuclear disarmament and the promotion of federal world government. The result is a compelling new perspective on modern British history, and the key social and moral reforms of the past century.
