Roadside Nature Tours through the Okanagan A Guide to British Columbia's Wine Country【電子書籍】[ Richard Cannings ]

The Okanagan attracts thousands of visitors each year to enjoy its beaches and wine, but more and more people are discovering its natural beauty. With desert sands and deep lakes, towering rock cliffs and rich benchlands, cold mountain forests and hot grasslands, the Okanagan has an ecological diversity unequalled in Canada.

Roadside Nature Tours through the Okanagan opens with an introduction to the region’s biodiversity, climate, geology, and human history, setting the stage for the route descriptions that follow. Richard Cannings then takes us on twenty-one tours through the valley, from the arid benchlands of Osoyoos to the snowy forests east of Vernon. The routes vary from main highways to quiet roads, and along each one we’re introduced to the animals, plants, and bedrock that create this national treasure. Each route also has a focal topic, ranging from owls to salmon and rattlesnakes to rock rabbits.

A Legend Hunter's Search for Ogopogo the Elusive Creature of Okanagan Lake【電子書籍】[ William Steciuk ]

Kelowna resident Bill Steciuk didn’t believe in Ogopogo. But that was about to change. In October of 1978, while driving across the bridge from the west side of Lake Okanagan, he saw something in the water that made him stop his car. All the traffic behind him also stopped, and he was soon joined at the rail by a small crowd of onlookers, all of whom saw what Bill had seen: a serpentine head with three black humps behind it. They watched the creature for nearly a minute, after which time it disappeared beneath the surface, leaving a substantial wake. Bill knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that he had just seen the legendary lake creature, Ogopogo.

Stories of Ogopogo in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley date back several centuriesー originating with the Syilx Peoples’ stories of N’ha-a-itk, the sacred spirit of the lakeーand sightings are frequent, but the truth about Ogopogo remains elusive. After that day in 1978, Bill dedicated himself to Ogopogo research and exploratory expeditions, in search of answers. What is Ogopogo? An ancient creature from the age of dinosaurs? What are eyewitnesses seeing, and which sightings are genuine?

With lucidity and suspense, A Legend Hunter's Search for Ogopogo the Elusive Creature of Okanagan Lake documents the startling findings of a twenty-five-year inquiry into one of the most fascinating cryptozoological mysteries in the world.

Under the Okanagan Sun
Where the past whispers, the present heals, and the future shines.

When photographer Emily Carter returns to the Okanagan Valley after losing everything she built in Calgary, she's looking for solitude and a fresh start. Nestled in a rustic lakeside cabin near Fintry, she finds more than just quietーshe discovers the heart of a land rich with stories, and a man whose soul seems carved from the very landscape itself.

Liam Fraser, a boatbuilder restoring a historic sailboat, lives a life anchored in tradition and craftsmanship. When Emily is hired by a nearby winery to capture the harvest, their paths cross in unexpected ways. But the deeper she immerses herself in the rhythms of the valley, the more Emily uncoversーold letters hidden in her cabin, a forgotten Syilx canoe buried near the shore, and a love story from long ago that mirrors her own.

As community tensions rise over the lake's future and secrets from the past surface, Emily and Liam must decide what they're willing to fight for. Together, they navigate the delicate balance between preservation and progress, history and hope, independence and love.

Set against the breathtaking beauty of British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, Under the Okanagan Sun is a moving tale of legacy, connection, and the healing power of place.

Writing the Okanagan【電子書籍】[ George Bowering ]

George Bowering was born in Penticton, where his great-grandfather Willis Brinson lived, and Bowering has never been all that far from the Okanagan Valley in his heart and imagination. Early in the twenty-first century, he was made a permanent citizen of Oliver. Bowering has family up and down the Valley, and he goes there as often as he can. He has been asked during his many visits to Okanagan bookstores over the years to publish a collection of his writing about the Valley.

Writing the Okanagan draws on forty books Bowering has published since 1960 ? poetry, fiction, history, and some forms he may have invented. Selections from Delsing (1961) and Sticks & Stones (1962) are here, as is “Driving to Kelowna” from The Silver Wire (1966). Other Okanagan towns, among them Rock Creek, Peachland, Vernon, Kamloops, Princeton, and Osoyoos, inspire selections from work published through the 1970s and on to 2013. Fairview, the old mining site near Oliver, is the focus of an excerpt from Caprice (1987, 2010), one volume in Bowering’s trilogy of historical novels. “Desert Elm” takes as its two main subjects the Okanagan Valley and his father, who, as Bowering did, grew up there. With the addition of some previously unpublished works, the reader will find the wonder of the Okanagan here, in both prose and poetry.

White Space Race, Privilege, and Cultural Economies of the Okanagan Valley【

Much attention has been paid to race in the Canadian metropolis, but how are the workings of whiteness manifested in the rural-urban? White Space analyzes the dominance of whiteness in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia to expose how this racial notion sustains forms of settler privilege today.

Contributors to this perceptive collection critique the cultural economics of whiteness and white supremacy. The first half documents the historical construction of whiteness: how settlers and their ancestors have sought to exalt pioneers by erasing non-whites from the region’s heritage while Indigenous people resist this white-out. The second half explores the persistence of whiteness as an organizing principle in the neoliberal deindustrialized present.

White Space moves beyond appraising whiteness as if it were a solid and unshakable category. Instead it offers a powerful demonstration of how the concept can be re-envisioned, resisted, and reshaped in contexts of economic change.

Established in 1867, the O'Keefe Ranch was at one time the largest cattle ranch in the region, with thousands of head of cattle grazing in the vast open ranges. By the early 1900s, the ranch had grown to over 12,000 acres, and Cornelius O'Keefe had built quite a legacy for himself. Known as a tireless worker who dabbled in a number of professions in addition to cattle ranching - from mining to operating a general store to being a postmaster - O'Keefe also had a full personal life. He married three times and had seventeen children. His family continued to live on the ranch until the 1960s, when it was opened to the public as a heritage site and tourist attraction. This concise biography brings the dynamic figure of O'Keefe to life and illuminates a fascinating period in BC history.

Write It on Your Heart The Epic World of an Okanagan Storyteller【電子書籍】[ Harry Robinson ]

Write It on Your Heart is a celebration of the late Harry Robinson, one of the great storytellers of the Interior Salish people of North America.

Collected over a ten-year period, the stories selected for this volume tell from a First Nations point of view about the origin of the world; the time of the animal people; the time before the coming of the white man; the stories of power; the prophet cult and its predictions of profound cultural and economic change; and the post-contact world. The collection ends with Robinson’s own version of “Puss in Boots,” true in every psychological detail to the European story, but set in the ranching country of the Similkameen Valley.

This collection is unique in that it chronicles not only the treasure house of a vibrant First Nations culture, but also the sweeping changes which took place in that culture as it began to interact with the new colonists who introduced a foreign language and writing to the mythic world of Coyote, Fox and Owl. As more and more of his listeners, First Nations included, understood only English, Robinson began to tell his old stories in this new language in order to keep them alive. By the time Wendy Wickwire met him in 1977, he had become as skilled a storyteller in English as he had been in his mother tongue. Robinson knew that the profound cultural changes which had taken place in his lifetime would continue and took to heart the matter of preserving the storytelling tradition. With his approval, Wickwire recorded his stories and brought them together in this critically acclaimed collection. Write It on Your Heart stands as a monument to the epic world of Harry Robinson, ensuring its survival in the many generations to come.

The Okanagan Wine Tour Guide【電子書籍】[ John Schreiner ]

The definitive guide to Interior BC wineries, covering the Okanagan, Similkameen, Thompson and Kootenays. With updated maps and travel tips, it’s your ultimate glove-box guide, now in a newly expanded and updated edition.

For nearly fifteen years Okanagan Wine Tour Guide has been the definitive companion for travelling the winding roads of BC’s Interior wine region. In this, the 6th edition, John Schreiner and his new co-authorーwine writer, podcaster, and instructor Luke Whittallーchart the latest developments at the oldest wineries and the very first vintages from the newest startups in a region that stretches along Okanagan Lake, west to the Similkameen, north to the Thompson, and east to the Kootenays.

This edition includes 240 wineries (that’s over 40 openings in five years!), revised and updated maps, contact information, tasting room information, and recommendations. From pioneers like Quail’s Gate on Mount Boucherie to the newest arrivals like Cliff & Gorge in Lillooet, these stories are as varied as the personalities of the wines themselvesーa few vines planted as a retirement project, a few acres purchased on a whim, or a gala grand opening underpinned by years of planning and consultation. What emerges across the guide is the sense of community and the room for wildly different philosophies on everything from growing to fermenting to naming.

Whether you’re paging through the aisles of the local liquor store, sorting your Viogniers from your Syrahs, or relishing a family vineyard’s journey from its Quonset-hut years to international acclaim, John Schreiner’s Okanagan Wine Tour is the ultimate guide to and celebration of Interior BC wine.

Trail North The Okanagan Trail of 1858?68 and Its Origins in British Columbia and Washington【電子書籍】[ Ken Mather ]

Winner (second prize), 2019 British Columbia Lieutenant Governor's Medal for Historical Writing

A revealing history of the ancient trail that served as a major transportation route between Washington and British Columbia and shaped the cultural and economic ties between the two jurisdictions.

Trails are the most enduring memorials of human occupation. Long before stone monuments were created, pathways throughout the world were being worn into hardness by human feet. Travellers along the stretch of Highway 97 from Brewster, Washington, to Kamloops, BC, may not know that they are travelling a route as old as humankind’s presence in the region. In fact, this north?south valley, a natural corridor linking the two major river systems that drain the Interior Plateau, has served as transportation route for tens of thousands of years.

Trail North traces the origins of this iconic trail among the Indigenous people of the Interior Plateau and its uses by the three different fur trading companies, before turning its focus on the period of 1858 to 1868, when the trail was used by miners, packers, and cattlemen as the major entry point into British Columbia from Washington Territory. The historical use of the trail in both jurisdictions is a fascinating episode in the history of the Pacific Northwest.

Vertical Horizons The History of Okanagan Helicopters【電子書籍】[ Douglas M. Grant ]

"Looking back over thirty years of flying for Okanagan, I see the experience has given me an interesting life. I have never really considered flying as work. It is more a way of life, a way of life that nourishes a free spirit, something that not many jobs can give you. I just cannot imagine anything I would... rather have done or any company I would have rather worked for."

--Jim Reid, pilot

In 1945, following years as an instructor, Carl Agar was honourably discharged from the British and Commonwealth Air Training Plan and moved to Penticton where he began looking for flying opportunities. A first attempt to start a flying club never took off but Agar and his partners Barney Bent and Alf Stringer were determined to get off the ground. They began looking at commercial ventures and in 1947 Okanagan Air Services (OAS) was formed to provide instruction and contract work. After a rough start--while demonstrating fruit spraying, Agar crashed a helicopter into power lines--the company got a break in May 1948 when the Fraser floods swamped the valley and OAS received a mosquito-spraying contract. From there the company flourished, going on to fly the first unaccompanied commercial helicopter ferry flight from Canada to the UK, monitor polar bears in the High Arctic, provide offshore oil rig support during monsoons, and, at the company's high point, operate in over 33 countries with 600 employees and 126 helicopters. Back home, Agar opened the Mountain Flying School in Penticton, which is still in operation today and has trained thousands of civilian and military pilots from all over the world.

Vertical Horizons is also the story of the employees who were pivotal to the success of the company. Individuals' experiences range from tragic to humorous and include a UFO sighting in the Arctic, witnessing the Jonestown massacre and a rescue of Vietnamese refugees off the coast of Thailand.

Featuring first-hand accounts, extensive research and a multitude of photographs, Vertical Horizons is the first-ever history of the company that pioneered flying high-mountain terrain--making it a must-read for any aviation buff.
