A Vision of Yemen The Travels of a European Orientalist and His Native Guide, A Translation of Hayyim Habshush's Travelogue【電子書籍】[ Alan Verskin ]

In 1869, Hayyim Habshush, a Yemeni Jew, accompanied the European orientalist Joseph Hal?vy on his archaeological tour of Yemen. Twenty years later, Habshush wrote A Vision of Yemen, a memoir of their travels, that provides a vivid account of daily life, religion, and politics. More than a simple travelogue, it is a work of trickster-tales, thick anthropological descriptions, and reflections on Jewish?Muslim relations. At its heart lies the fractious and intimate relationship between the Yemeni coppersmith and the "enlightened" European scholar and the collision between the cultures each represents. The book thus offers a powerful indigenous response to European Orientalism.

This edition is the first English translation of Habshush's writings from the original Judeo-Arabic and Hebrew and includes an accessible historical introduction to the work. The translation maintains Habshush's gripping style and rich portrayal of the diverse communities and cultures of Yemen, offering a potent mixture of artful storytelling and cultural criticism, suffused with humor and empathy. Habshush writes about the daily lives of men and women, rich and poor, Jewish and Muslim, during a turbulent period of war and both Ottoman and European imperialist encroachment. With this translation, Alan Verskin recovers the lost voice of a man passionately committed to his land and people.

The Orientalist Solving the Mystery of a Strange and Dangerous Life【電子書籍】[ Tom Reiss ]

Part history, part cultural biography, and part literary mystery, The Orientalist traces the life of Lev Nussimbaum, a Jew who transformed himself into a Muslim prince and became a best-selling author in Nazi Germany.

Born in 1905 to a wealthy family in the oil-boom city of Baku, at the edge of the czarist empire, Lev escaped the Russian Revolution in a camel caravan. He found refuge in Germany, where, writing under the names Essad Bey and Kurban Said, his remarkable books about Islam, desert adventures, and global revolution, became celebrated across fascist Europe. His enduring masterpiece, Ali and Nino?a story of love across ethnic and religious boundaries, published on the eve of the Holocaust?is still in print today.

But Lev’s life grew wilder than his wildest stories. He married an international heiress who had no idea of his true identity?until she divorced him in a tabloid scandal. His closest friend in New York, George Sylvester Viereck?also a friend of both Freud’s and Einstein’s?was arrested as the leading Nazi agent in the United States. Lev was invited to be Mussolini’s official biographer?until the Fascists discovered his “true” identity. Under house arrest in the Amalfi cliff town of Positano, Lev wrote his last book?discovered in a half a dozen notebooks never before read by anyone?helped by a mysterious half-German salon hostess, an Algerian weapons-smuggler, and the poet Ezra Pound.

Tom Reiss spent five years tracking down secret police records, love letters, diaries, and the deathbed notebooks. Beginning with a yearlong investigation for The New Yorker, he pursued Lev’s story across ten countries and found himself caught up in encounters as dramatic and surreal, and sometimes as heartbreaking, as his subject’s life. Reiss’s quest for the truth buffets him from one weird character to the next: from the last heir of the Ottoman throne to a rock opera-composing baroness in an Austrian castle, to an aging starlet in a Hollywood bungalow full of cats and turtles.

As he tracks down the pieces of Lev Nussimbaum’s deliberately obscured life, Reiss discovers a series of shadowy worlds?of European pan-Islamists, nihilist assassins, anti-Nazi book smugglers, Baku oil barons, Jewish Orientalists?that have also been forgotten. The result is a thoroughly unexpected picture of the twentieth century?of the origins of our ideas about race and religious self-definition, and of the roots of modern fanaticism and terrorism. Written with grace and infused with wonder, The Orientalist is an astonishing book.

Nature, War and the Art of the Detmold Twins Orientalist Dreams, Modernity’s Nightmares【電子書籍】[ Tessa Morris-Suzuki ]

Twins Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908) and Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957) were among the most extraordinary, enigmatic and tragic figures in early twentieth-century British art. In unravelling the mysteries of their lives, this book re-examines themes of art and war, orientalism and the human relationship with nature.

By the time they entered their teens, the Detmold twins were widely recognised as artistic geniuses. They worked together on acclaimed etchings and on illustrations to Kipling’s Jungle Book, but at the height of their fame, and while still in his early twenties, Charles Maurice Detmold inexplicably committed suicide, leaving only a couple of strange sentences as clues to the reason for his death. Edward Detmold went on to become a central figure in the golden age of book illustration, famous particularly for his nature paintings and for the images he created to accompany Hodder and Stoughton’s exquisite 1924 edition of The Arabian Nights. He was also imprisoned as a conscientious objector during the First World War and developed idiosyncratic philosophies, particularly focused on his impassioned rejection of the violence of modern civilization.

The first book-length biography of the Detmold twins, this study uses previously unknown archives to show how profoundly their work resonates with the predicaments of environmental destruction and rising tides of military violence that still confront us today. This book is of relevance to all students and researchers with an interest in early twentieth-century British cultural and social history and in art history (especially the history of illustration and the fields of art and war, art and the environment, and Orientalist art). It will also appeal to a broader audience of general readers with a love of art history as well as those with an interest in themes of twentieth century pacifism and utopianism.

The Freudian Orient Early Psychoanalysis, Anti-Semitic Challenge, and the Vicissitudes of Orientalist Discourse【電子書籍】[ Frank F. Scherer ]

This study consists of a twofold, interrelated enquiry: the Orientalism of psychoanalysis and the psychoanalysis of Orientalism - bringing into conversation Sigmund Freud and Edward Said and, thereby, the founding texts of psychoanalysis and postcolonial studies. The immediate object of this exploration is the "Freudian Orient" and we thus begin by tracing the strong Orientalist presence in Freud's writings with examples from his early as well as later correspondence, his diaries, and his psychological works. Following these examples of "manifest" Orientalism, we will pursue more "latent" meanings by engaging two of Freud's favorite metaphors: archaeology and travel. Whereas the former soon uncovers a veritable porta Orientis, conducting to an external Orient, the latter reveals an internalised Orient traversed by Jewishness, anti-Semitism and the Bible. Unveiling the figure of Moses shows how Freud's strategy to resist anti-Semitic Orientalism by way of universalist reversal is only partially successful as he cannot extricate himself from the historical assumptions of that discourse.

Richard Burton, T.E. Lawrence and the Culture of Homoerotic Desire Orientalist Depictions of Arab Sexuality【電子書籍】[ Dr Feras Alkabani ]

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Arabic-speaking regions of the Ottoman Empire saw a crucial change in attitudes towards sexuality. Notions of 'respectability', 'propriety' and 'sexual morality' were being transformed in literary and cultural discourses, a shift that was related to the gradual rise in anti-Ottoman Arab nationalism. However, contemporary Orientalists such as Sir Richard Burton and T.E. Lawrence were oblivious to certain aspects of this process of cultural reconfiguration. While accounts of male-love poetry (ghazal al-mudhakkar) were being gradually expurgated from the Arab literary heritage, elaborate narratives of Oriental homoerotic desire distinctively characterise the encounters of both Burton and Lawrence with the Arab East.

By comparing their literary and autobiographical accounts of the Arab Orient with contemporary Arabic literature, Feras Alkabani is able to expose this critical disparity in cross-cultural portrayals of sexual morality and homoerotic desire. Alkabani relates the conflicting agendas of contemporary Orientalists and Arab scholars to the shifts in international imperial power relations and the eventual collapse of the Ottoman Empire. His detailed comparative study reveals the significance of homoerotic desire within Orientalist and Arab literary discourses at a time when the meaning and connotations of poetic male-love were undergoing a critical change in Arab culture and literature. It will prove invaluable for those researching Orientalism, nationalism, imperialism and manifestations of homoerotic desire in the fin-de-si?cle Middle East.

French Women Orientalist Artists, 1861?1956 Cross-Cultural Contacts and Depictions of Difference【電子書籍】[ Mary Kelly ]

This book is the first full-length study dedicated to French women Orientalist artists.

Mary Kelly has gathered primary documentation relating to seventy-two women artists whose works of art can be placed in the canon of French Orientalism between 1861 and 1956. Bringing these artists together for the first time and presenting close contextual analyses of works of art, attention is given to artists’ cross-cultural interactions with painted/sculpted representations of the Maghreb particularly in Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.Using an interdisciplinary ‘open platform of discussion’ approach, Kelly builds on established theory which places emphases on the gendered gaze. This entails a discussion on women’s painted perspectives of and contacts with Muslim women as well as various Maghrebi cultures and landーall the while remaining mindful of the subject position of the French artist and the problematic issues which can arise when discussing European-made ‘ethnographic’ scenes. Kelly argues that French women’s perspectives of the Maghreb differed from the male gaze and were informed by their artistic training and social positions in Europe. In so doing, French women’s socio-cultural modernity is also examined. Moreover, executed between 1861 and 1956, the works of art presented show influences of Modernism; therefore, this book also pays close attention to progressive Realism and Naturalism in art and the Orientalist shift into Modernist subject matter and form. Through this research into French women Orientalists, Kelly engages with important discussions on the crossing view of the historical female other with the cultural other, artistic hybridity and influence in art as well as the postcolonial response to French activities in colonial Algeria and the protectorates of Tunisia and Morocco. On giving focus to women’s art and the impact of cross-cultural interchanges, this book rethinks Orientalism in French art.

This book will be of particular interest to scholars in the history of art, gender studies, history, and Middle Eastern and North African studies*.*

Robert Irwin’s history of Orientalism leads from Ancient Greece to the present. He shows that, whether making philological comparisons between Arabic and Hebrew, cataloguing the coins of Fatimid Egypt or establishing the basic chronology of Harun al-Rashid’s military campaigns against Byzantium, scholars have been unified not by politics or ideology but by their shared obsession. For Lust of Knowing is an extraordinary, passionate book, both a sustained argument and a brilliant work of original scholarship.
