Gender, Power, and Talent The Journey of Daoist Priestesses in Tang China【電子書籍】[ Jinhua Jia ]

During the Tang dynasty (618?907), changes in political policies, the religious landscape, and gender relations opened the possibility for Daoist women to play an unprecedented role in religious and public life. Women, from imperial princesses to the daughters of commoner families, could be ordained as Daoist priestesses and become religious leaders, teachers, and practitioners in their own right. Some achieved remarkable accomplishments: one wrote and transmitted texts on meditation and inner cultivation; another, a physician, authored a treatise on therapeutic methods, medical theory, and longevity techniques. Priestess-poets composed major works, and talented priestess-artists produced stunning calligraphy.

In Gender, Power, and Talent, Jinhua Jia draws on a wealth of previously untapped sources to explain how Daoist priestesses distinguished themselves as a distinct gendered religious and social group. She describes the life journey of priestesses from palace women to abbesses and ordinary practitioners, touching on their varied reasons for entering the Daoist orders, the role of social and religious institutions, forms of spiritual experience, and the relationships between gendered identities and cultural representations. Jia takes the reader inside convents and cloisters, demonstrating how they functioned both as a female space for self-determination and as a public platform for both religious and social spheres. The first comprehensive study of the lives and roles of Daoist priestesses in Tang China, Gender, Power, and Talent restores women to the landscape of Chinese religion and literature and proposes new methodologies for the growing field of gender and religion.

The Priestesses of the Serpent God【電子書籍】[ Renata De Franco ]

This ebook is considered useful for educational purpose and expresses the basic philosophical concepts of the “panpsichism”, typical theory of the Renaissance philosophy. Platonic ideas become the constitutive reason of individual organism and all that exists in the cosmos.

In order to attract the spirits, for thousand of years, the men have deified animals and attributed them divine or supernatural qualities to objects, places or material beings.

This concept, over the centuries, has also spread into the philosophical context, resulting in panpsychism, a term that derives from the Greek, formed from the word “pan”, and “psyche”, and it means that all beings, living or not, possess psychic abilities.

The pampsichism isn’t a real religion, but a denomination attributed to the primitive cults that came, and are still practiced today, from some tribes, populations in Africa, in Latin America, or in islands lost in the Ocean, like Indonesia.

The “Animism” derives from the latin word “anima” (soul), and it is the belief that anything has a spirit, or a soul. So even animals, plants, mountains, rivers, the moon and the stars have a powerful spirits that can do them good, but also evil.

They included panpsychic concepts in their doctrines: Telesio, Plato, Giordano Bruno and Leibnitz, mathematician, philosopher, scientist, logic and theologian. The Greek philosopher Thales said, in this regard, that: "All things are full of gods". An assumption now almost relegated to the world of fables and legends, except where the men still live so near to Nature that they can’t ignore the language.

The religious vision of the world and the life, however, has grafted more and less complex beliefs. An union of fusion of irreconcilable ideological elements that have given life to a pantheon of divinities and cults. They have expressed themselves in spiritism magic, divination and astrology, spells, superstitions, amulets and talismans, lucky charms. Anything that could have helped to protect themselves from evil spirits, to appease the good spirits, up to the human sacrifices.

On the background of the Indonesian archipelago, a crossroad of cultures, religions, people and civilations, the book tell real stories of the life and death, tribal rites in practice decades ago, but also survivors where progress and development haven’t yet fully arrived. They are events buried by the dust over the years, the result of ancient legacies and ancestral knowledge, when the natural forces escaped to the control of the man and for this it was necessary to ingratiate them. Cults, symbols and myths date back to the most ancient times, to the origins of primordial world and resurface from the distant past of the human race, only apparently appeased.

A Place at the Altar Priestesses in Republican Rome【電子書籍】[ Meghan J. DiLuzio ]

A Place at the Altar illuminates a previously underappreciated dimension of religion in ancient Rome: the role of priestesses in civic cult. Demonstrating that priestesses had a central place in public rituals and institutions, Meghan DiLuzio emphasizes the complex, gender-inclusive nature of Roman priesthood. In ancient Rome, priestly service was a cooperative endeavor, requiring men and women, husbands and wives, and elite Romans and slaves to work together to manage the community's relationship with its gods.

Like their male colleagues, priestesses offered sacrifices on behalf of the Roman people, and prayed for the community’s well-being. As they carried out their ritual obligations, they were assisted by female cult personnel, many of them slave women. DiLuzio explores the central role of the Vestal Virgins and shows that they occupied just one type of priestly office open to women. Some priestesses, including the flaminica Dialis, the regina sacrorum, and the wives of the curial priests, served as part of priestly couples. Others, such as the priestesses of Ceres and Fortuna Muliebris, were largely autonomous.

A Place at the Altar offers a fresh understanding of how the women of ancient Rome played a leading role in public cult.

The Wiccan Minister's Manual, a Guide for Priests and Priestesses【電子書籍】[ Kevin M. Gardner ]

"The Wiccan Minister's Manual, A Guide For Priests and Priestesses, " was inspired as a training aid for those who would like to become Wiccan Ministers, as well as an aid for Wiccan/Pagan Priests and Priestesses. The Craft is evolving, becoming more and more accepted by society, and there is beginning to be a definite distinction between Wiccan Laity and Wiccan Clergy. Part One - Guidance - Making the spiritual connection to personal deity through love, prayer, meditation, ritual, and myth and how to guide others to create their own personal connections. Part Two - Wiccan religious philosophy and guidance - How to live a spiritual life in the modern world. Part Three - various methods of healing mind, body and spirit - Including some legal pit-falls to avoid, plus chapter eleven presents an extensive discourse on Pastoral Counseling. Part Four deals with psychic self-defense and rituals of protection. Including House Clearings, Banishings, and Exorcism. Additionally, the author explains what to look for and what to look out for while determining if an exorcism is really needed or if the client is suffering from psychosis and is in need of a professional therapist. Part Five focuses upon the spiritual support roles. It covers, dealing with death and dying, Funerals, Prison Ministry, Legal requirements of doing Handfastings in all 50 states, plus a discourse on whether or not to incorporate. This work begins to fill yet another gap in this area of the Wiccan religious structure as it brings back much of the older knowledge and philosophy that seems to be waning from the collective Wiccan memory.

Reviewed by Edain McCoy; "Kevin, I received my copy of "Wiccan Minister's Manual Its terrific! You cover everything... Personally, I think you did a great job at making your book useful to all trads."

Women Writers and the Occult in Literature and Culture Female Lucifers, Priestesses, and Witches【電子書籍】[ Miriam Wallraven ]

Examining the intersection of occult spirituality, text, and gender, this book provides a compelling analysis of the occult revival in literature from the 1880s through the course of the twentieth century. Bestselling novels such as The Da Vinci Code play with magic and the fascination of hidden knowledge, while occult and esoteric subjects have become very visible in literature during the twentieth century. This study analyses literature by women occultists such as Alice Bailey, Dion Fortune, and Starhawk, and revisits texts with occult motifs by canonical authors such as Sylvia Townsend Warner, Leonora Carrington, and Angela Carter. This material, which has never been analysed in a literary context, covers influential movements such as Theosophy, Spiritualism, Golden Dawn, Wicca, and Goddess spirituality. Wallraven engages with the question of how literature functions as the medium for creating occult worlds and powerful identities, particularly the female Lucifer, witch, priestess, and Goddess. Based on the concept of ancient wisdom, the occult in literature also incorporates topical discourses of the twentieth century, including psychoanalysis, feminism, pacifism, and ecology. Hence, as an ever-evolving discursive universe, it presents alternatives to religious truth claims that often lead to various forms of fundamentalism that we encounter today. This book offers a ground-breaking approach to interpreting the forms and functions of occult texts for scholars and students of literary and cultural studies, religious studies, sociology, and gender studies.
