Urban Sores On the Interaction between Segregation, Urban Decay and Deprived Neighbourhoods【電子書籍】[ Hans Skifter Andersen ]
|

This title was first published in 2003. Most European cities have experienced problems in certain neighbourhoods that are termed deprived or excluded . Traditionally these were found in the oldest urban areas with lowest quality housing, but since the 1980s, such areas have emerged in housing estates built around the cities' edges. These neighbourhoods are marked by visible physical and social problems that disfigure the otherwise pleasant urban landscape, and can be seen as urban sores . This engaging and thought-provoking book provides a deeper understanding of why urban decay and deprived neighbourhoods appear in certain parts of cities, as well as how they affect residents and cities in general. Drawing on in-depth empirical research from Denmark, it compares this with other studies from Europe and the United States. The author combines theories and methodologies from the fields of geography (on segregation), economics (on processes of urban decay) and social research (on social exclusion and deprived neighbourhoods) to provide original, illuminating and invaluable insights.

The Deprived Innocent On Death Row【電子書籍】[ Steffen Hou ]
|

Six Americans tell the heartbreaking and dramatic stories of how they ended up on death row for crimes they never committed. In some cases they were minutes away from being executed despite their innocence. The Deprived: Innocent on Death Row provides a rare insight into life on death row. Through compelling interviews the book describes how innocent mothers and fathers suddenly become victims of meaningless violence in a vicious prison environment where their survival often depends on becoming just as brutal as the killers in the cells next to them. However, the book is also a life-affirming tale of how humans can survive even the greatest injustice, and how the innocent death row inmates, after their exoneration, have managed to transform a life in solitary confinement into a life full of love, hope and faith. But despite leaving death row today, death row will never leave them. Derrick Jamison, exonerated after 20 years: When Derrick's execution was announced, he had already spent more than 15 years on death row living in despair, but as he now sat alone in the cell knowing that his ordeal was about to come to an end, he found no comfort for himself. When he ate his last meal, he had one more wishーthat his execution would be quick and painless. Not all of the 18 men who had been executed prior to Derrick were that lucky. "They were forced out of their cells, strapped down on a gurney, and had poison shot into their blood. Many suffered physically when killed. They had to have injections again and again. Knowing that death could be painful really scared me," Derrick shares. Sunny Jacobs, exonerated after 16 years: "The guards were not allowed to talk to me because if they started seeing me as a human being, they might not be able to participate in taking my life. Therefore, they had to treat me as less than a human being," Sunny says. For the same reasons, she was never referred to by her name. Only her inmate number. "That is your inventory number till they decide you must die." Kwame Ajamu, exonerated after 38 years: Old Sparky was the electric chair and Kwame had only been in the death house for a few minutes when the guards introduced him to what was going to be his final destination in life. "It mortified me. Imagine what that kind of cruelness does to a 17-year-old boy who knows he is innocent. It broke me down and gave me mental scars for life. I will never be able to shake off that experience. When other people do not care if you are dead or alive, you lose faith in humanity. I will remember those horrifying minutes until the day I die." Nick Yarris, exonerated after 22 years: "Normally, I would just hurt myself. I would knock my head into the wall until I tasted the blood. Because when I felt the pain, I would start to feel alive and be reminded that I was still human. But when that was not enough, I tried to commit suicide," Nick says, telling that one of the reasons why he probably never succeeded in killing himself was because he could not disappoint his parents. He felt that he owed it to them to prove his innocence because they had already lost so much in life. Damon Thibodeaux, exonerated after 15 years: "Till I sat in that interrogation room, I was always convinced that a person would never confess to a crime they had not done. I was the person who did. Until you are put in the position I was in, you will never understand why. But investigators are allowed to manipulate and force you to get a confession. At some point, everyone will break. When I did, it got the real killer off the hook. Today, we all know he is still out there," Damon says. Herman Lindsey: exonerated after 3 years: "By putting me on death row, God gave me a voice. We cannot be sure we are not killing innocent people. I am an example of that myself. And it changes people's views when I tell my story. God knew I had to go to death row to get that voice," Herman says.

How do people deal with diversity in deprived and mixed urban neighbourhoods? This edited collection provides a comparative international perspective on superdiversity in cities, with explicit attention given to social inequality and social exclusion on a neighbourhood level.

Although public discourses on urban diversity are often negative, this book focuses on how residents actively and creatively come and live together through micro-level interactions. By deliberately taking an international perspective on the daily lives of residents, the book uncovers the ways in which national and local contexts shape living in diversity.

The book will be a valuable resource for researchers and students of poverty, segregation and social mix, conviviality, the effects of international migration, urban and neighbourhood policies and governance, multiculturality, social networks, social cohesion, social mobility, and super-diversity.

Deprived Solicitation (A Collection of Poems)【電子書籍】[ M. Hasan Imam ]

Poetry sometimes is a thrill to emancipate the depth of excitement in one's life. At other times, it is the embodiment and reflections of practicality in human life, the sorrows, the sufferings of disadvantaged human beings. And yet, at other time, it is the humanity by the force of power or by the force of trror, unjust though in nature, in their own way. The ultimate victim is the human and the degredation of human feelings. These are the prime thoughts and effects, the author tried to focuus through the collections of these selective poems that ranges from 1971-2006 and they're only samples though, of all these years writings. Another aspect is the nature's gifts to mankind and its beauty that the author touches through the soul of misty waves.

New Hope for Deprived Children【電子書籍】[ Betty Flint ]
|

New Hope for Deprived Children is the carefully documented story of the development of a group of children from infancy through early adolescence. Exhibiting the effects of severe institutional deprivation in the early part of their lives, these children became the focus of a therapeutic programme within an institution designed to relieve their serious developmental deficiencies. The programme and its effects confirmed the faith of the researchers involved that recovery to a certain degree was possible, even with an institutional setting. Further recovery was effected by later placement in foster and adoptive homes.

The lives of twenty-eight of these children have been recorded and the data analysed. This book presents their stories in both human and scientific terms. The guidance procedures and therapeutic intervention were based on a personality theory of 'security,' which allowed the research and guidance team to provide a consistent frame of reference to all procedures designed to move the children increasingly closer to 'normal' behaviour. The range of adaptation to homes and community reflects the individual capacities of each child and the capacities of each family to sponsor such individuality. Both the group analysis and the individual histories provide fascinating information and, additionally, pose many fundamental questions about human development.

Revitalising Deprived Urban Neighbourhoods An Assisted Self-Help Approach【電子書籍】[ Colin C. Williams ]
|

Governments in Western Europe and North America have placed job creation initiatives at the heart of their policy for revitalizing deprived neighbourhoods. However, relying on this alone is problematic and these governments are becoming increasingly interested in finding ways of enabling communities to help themselves. Drawing upon original, in-depth studies of self-help activities in both deprived and affluent neighbourhoods in UK cities, this book examines why the populations of deprived neighbourhoods are more likely to be excluded not only from the labour market but also from adopting self-help practices in response to their situation. It also identifies the barriers which discourage participation in self-help projects. A combination of policies are advocated, bringing together innovative bottom-up initiatives such as LETS, time currencies and Employee Mutuals, with top-down policies such as Active Citizens’ Credits. This book instead suggests a fresh and positive approach towards revitalizing deprived neighbourhoods based on seeking the full-engagement, rather than merely the full-employment, of deprived populations.

|

No take-backs.

That was the motto that Drew lived by in all things, including his love life.
He’s a player, pure and simple.
He’s learned the hard way that women aren’t all hearts and flowers. Sometimes their sexy bodies and beautiful faces are just a pretty shield to hide the crazy, and he’s so freakin’ over crazy.
Been there, done that. He has the divorce papers to prove it.

Karma hits like a bitch.

Aspen needs a break. A long one that doesn’t include anything with a Y chromosome. Not even one as tempting as her new neighbor who just moved in across the street. Men are trouble with a capital freakin’ T, and she has the ankle monitor to prove it.
The last man she gave her heart to was a police officer. A man whose life was dedicated to protection; he was supposed to protect her heartーnot break it.
She decides right then and there that she’s done with being the better person.

Everything happens for a reason.

A rash decisionーundoubtedly regrettable, undeniably unforgettable. In the heat of the moment, Aspen’s actions with a tire iron and her ex-boyfriend’s brand new SUV land him in the ER getting stitches and have her seeing the inside of a jail cell for the first time.
It’s just her luck that the whole town is there to witness the result of her poor decision, including her police officer brother and the neighbor that already made it more than clear she was more trouble than she was worth.
House arrest never looked so good.

Hide your crazy.

Drew enjoyed the show, though. For the first time in a year, he’s thinking about his life, and how it would be a lot more enjoyable with a woman like Aspen at his side.
Maybe crazy isn’t so bad after all.

'Social Capital' in deprived neighborhoods A critical review of social capital concepts in the context of neighborhood renewal policies in Germany【電子書籍】[ Christoph Kraschl ]

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Sociology - Social System, Social Structure, Class, Social Stratification, grade: 8.5 (excellent), University of Amsterdam (International School of Humanities and Social Sciences), course: Social Problems in Urban Areas: Views, Concepts, Theories , 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In this article concepts of social capital in the context of social policies are discussed which focus on neighborhood renewal. First, theories of social capital are illuminated by comparing the concepts of Putnam, Bourdieu and Granovetter. Second, by the example of the German program 'Socially Integrative City' (SIC), a recent nationwide strategy (aimed at revitalizing deprived neighborhoods) is analyzed. Which of the aforementioned concepts of social capital (or concept-elements) are implemented in the SIC-initiative? For answering this question key documents that outline the aforementioned policies are reviewed. Policies and objectives of the SIC-initiative which can be related to the three depicted approaches to social capital are identified. In the framework of this analysis there is particular consideration of the 'sub-concepts' of social capital: bonding, bridging and linking. With this the author reveals which kinds of social relationships between people and different population-groups are planned to be established. In this context the function of social capital is particularly considered. Finally, after the discussion of recent critiques on social capital theories, these are evaluated with regard to their usefulness for social policies in deprived urban areas.

Ambitions of the Deprived chronicles the lives of four teenage friends as they experience life through a lens of contradiction, conflicts and struggles for space and identity. Refusing to be limited by the stereotypical expectations of society due to their race, age and social status they pledge to rise above their circumstances and succeed against the odds. At the crux of adulthood they have high aspirations and great motivation for careers in teaching, law and the Olympics. Their destitute area, violent gang members and a local murder uproot their plans when one of the boys, Junior becomes unwittingly caught up in the crime. His innocence is of little importance when the trial tarnishes him with the same brush as the perpetrators.

Family in disbelief, friends in uproar, community in protest the effect is widespread. As the pressure mounts ambitions are put on hold, friendships are tested and loyalties broken. Unless the trial can be infiltrated, labels will continue to criminalise and the truth will be lost forever…

Psychotherapy with Severely Deprived Children (Psychology Revivals)【
|

Originally published in 1983, this study describes the experience of severely deprived children referred for individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic in London, and at other clinics and schools. Most were living in children’s homes, all came from chaotic and disrupted families, and many had been abused or neglected. Children from such backgrounds have previously been considered unsuitable for psychotherapy, and the theoretical and technical issues arising from their treatment are discussed here, and detailed case material is presented.

There is a high rate of emotional and behavioural disturbance among children in community care. The experience of the therapists struggling, often painfully, to establish contact and communication with these young people, who have been hurt and disillusioned by life, provide illuminating material on the children’s perceptions of their lives. This book clearly demonstrates the need for and the capacity to respond to treatment, and it provides insights which are of relevance to all who are in close contact with such children.

Live Company Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with Autistic, Borderline, Deprived and Abused Children【電子書籍】[ Anne Alvarez ]

|

Children whose minds as well as bodies have been damaged by the intrusions of sexual abuse, violence or neglect, and others, quite different, who are handicapped by their own mysterious sensitivities to more minor deprivations, may experience a type of black despair and cynicism that require long-term treatment and test the stamina of the psychotherapist to the utmost.
In Live Company, Anne Alvarez reflects on thirty years' experience of treating autistic, psychotic and borderline children and adolescents by the methods of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Central to the book is the moving story on an autistic child's long struggle between sanity and madness, in which the author describes the arduous journey that she as therapist and he as patient made towards new understanding and his partial recovery.
Modern developments in psychoanalytic theory and technique mean that such children can be treated with some success. In the book the author discusses these developments, and also describes some of the areas of convergence and divergence between organicist and psychodynamicist theories of autism. Particularly important is her integration of psychoanalytic theory with the new findings in infant development and infant psychiatry. This has enabled her to formulate some new and exciting ideas and speculate on the need for some additions to established theory.
Anne Alvarez has produced a professionally powerful and englightening book, drawn from her extensive experience as a child psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic, which will be of interest to all professionals involved with children and adolescents as well as anyone interested in madness and the growth of the mind.
