Elizabeth Barrett Moulton-Barrett.at the age of nine.Engraved by G. Cooke from a Drawing by Charles Hayter. London: Published by Smith, Elder & Co. 15. Waterloo Place. PREFATORY NOTE. 1. "Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of Edward Moulton Barrett, was born in London on the 4th of March, 1809." Elizabeth was born, March 6, 1806, at Coxhoe Hall, county of Durham, the residence of her father.[A] "Before she was eleven she composed an epic on 'Marathon.'" She was then fourteen. 2. "It is said that Mr. Barrett was a man of intellect and culture, and therefore able to direct his daughter's education, but be that so or not, he obtained for her the tutorial assistance of the well-known Greek scholar Hugh Stuart Boyd ... who was also a writer of fluent verse: and his influence and instruction doubtless confirmed Miss Barrett in her poetical aspirations." Mr. Boyd, early deprived of sight from over-study, resided at Malvern, and cared for little else than Greek literature, especially that of the "Fathers." He was about or over fifty, stooped a good deal, and was nearly bald. His daily habit was to sit for hours before a table, treating it as a piano with his fingers, and reciting Greekーhis memory for which was such that, on a folio column of his favourite St. Gregory being read to him, he would repeat it without missing a syllable. Elizabeth, then residing in Herefordshire, visited him frequently, partly from her own love of Greek, and partly from a desire for the congenial society of one to whom her attendance might be helpful. There was nothing in the least "tutorial" in this relationーmerely the natural feeling of a girl for a blind and disabled scholar in whose pursuits she took interest. Her knowledge of Greek was originally due to a preference for sharing with her brother Edward in the instruction of his Scottish tutor Mr. M'Swiney rather than in that of her own governess Mrs. Orme: and at such lessons she constantly assisted until her brother's departure for the Charter Houseーwhere he had Thackeray for a schoolfellow. In point of fact, she was self-taught in almost every respect. Mr. Boyd was no writer of "fluent verse," though he published an unimportant volume, and the literary sympathies of the friends were exclusively bestowed on Greek

All three series. This edition is based on on the first published collection, edited by Mabel Loomis Todd and T.W. Higginson, which was released in three "series", the first of which appeared in 1890. According to Wikipedia, Mabel Loomis Todd "became friends with the Dickinsons, and though she never met Emily Dickinson in person, the two women exchanged letters. After Emily's death in 1886, hundreds of her unpublished poems were discovered. In 1888, Emily's sister Lavinia asked Todd to copy and organize the poems, which were to be sent to the publisher Thomas Wentworth Higginson. The first volume of Poems by Emily Dickinson was published in 1890. This version included many alterations by Todd. In 1896, Todd and the Dickinson family had a falling-out over a legal battle regarding property owned by Austin Dickinson. As a result, Emily Dickinson's manuscripts were split between the two families. In 1945, Todd's daughter Millicent published some of the poems from Todd's portion of the manuscripts."

The Greatest Poetical Works by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth【電子書籍】[ Samuel Taylor Coleridge ]

Lyrical Ballads, two collections of poems by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge are generally considered to have marked the beginning of the English Romantic movement in literature. The immediate effect on critics was modest, but they became and remain a landmark, changing the course of English literature and poetry. Most of the poems in the 1798 edition were written by Wordsworth, with Coleridge contributing only five poems to the collection, including one of his most famous works, 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. A second edition was published in 1800, in which Wordsworth included additional poems and a preface detailing the pair's avowed poetical principles. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He wrote the poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as the major prose work Biographia Literaria. William Wordsworth (1770 -1850) was a major English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798). The Poetical Works of John Dryden With Life, Critical Dissertation and Explanatory Notes (Complete)【電子書籍】[ John Dryden ]

The poet was the eldest of fourteen childrenーfour sons and ten daughters. The honour of his birth is claimed, as already stated, by two parishes, that of Oldwincle, All Saints, and that of Oldwincle, St Peter's, as Homer's was of old by seven cities. His brothers and sisters have been followed, by eager biographers, into their diverging and deepening paths of obscurityーpaths in which we do not choose to attend them. Dryden received the rudiments of his education at Tichmarsh or at Oundleーfor here, too, we have conflicting statements. It is certain, however, that he was admitted a king's scholar at Westminster, under the tuition of Dr Busby, whom he always respected, and who discovered in him poetical power. He encouraged him to write, as a Thursday's night's task, a translation of the third Satire of Persius, a writer precisely of that vigorously rhetorical, rapidly satirical, and semi-poetical school, which Dryden was qualified to appreciate and to mirror; besides Other pieces of a similar kind which are lost. During the last year of his residence at Westminster, and when only eighteen years of age, he wrote one among the ninety-eight elegies which were called forth by the sudden death of Henry Lord Hastings, and published under the title of "Lachrym? Musarum." Hastings seems to have been an amiable person, but he was besides a lord, and hinc illoe lachrym?. We know not of what quality the Other tears were, but assuredly Dryden's is one of very suspicious sincerity, and of very little poetical merit. But even the crocodile tears of a great genius, if they fall into a fanciful shape, must be preserved; and we have preserved his, accordingly, notwithstanding the false taste as well as doubtful truth and honesty of this his earliest poem. Shortly after, Dryden obtained a Westminster scholarship, and on the 11th of May 1650, entered on Trinity College, Cambridge. His tutor was one John Templer, famous then as one of the many who had attempted to put a hook in the jaws of old Hobbes, the Leviathan of his time, but whose reply, as well as Hobbes' own book (like a whale disappearing from a Shetland "voe" into the deep, with all the hooks and harpoons of his enemies along with him) has been almost entirely forgotten. At Cambridge, Dryden was noted for regularity and diligence, and took the degree of B.A. in January 1653-4, and in 1657 was made A.M. by a dispensation from the Archbishop of Canterbury. Once, indeed, he was rusticated for a fortnight on account of some disobedience to the vice-master. He resided, however, at his university three years after the usual term; and although he did not become a Fellow, and made no secret, in after days, of preferring Oxford to Cambridge, yet the reason of this seems to have lain, not in any personal disgust, but in some Other cause, which, says Scott, "we may now search for in vain

The Day of Doom; Or, a Poetical Description of the Great and Last Judgement【電子書籍】[ Michael Wigglesworth ]

Michael Wigglesworth's 'The Day of Doom; Or, a Poetical Description of the Great and Last Judgement' is a Puritan poem that vividly describes the events leading up to the final judgement day. Written in a straightforward and didactic style, the poem serves as a cautionary tale to sinners, urging them to repent before it is too late. Wigglesworth's use of biblical imagery and religious fervor adds to the intense and somber tone of the work, making it a powerful piece of early American literature. The poem reflects the religious beliefs and values of the Puritan community in colonial New England, emphasizing the concepts of sin, redemption, and divine punishment. Michael Wigglesworth, a Puritan minister, wrote 'The Day of Doom' as a means of instilling fear of God and promoting moral righteousness among his congregants. His firsthand experience of the religious fervor and strict beliefs of the Puritans likely shaped the content and style of the poem, which remains a significant work in American religious literature. For readers interested in early American literature, religious poetry, or Puritan beliefs, 'The Day of Doom' is a must-read. Wigglesworth's powerful and evocative portrayal of the final judgement day offers valuable insights into the religious mindset of colonial America and the impact of Puritan theology on society.

To the maiden A little ink more or less! Have you ever made a just man? I explain the silvered passing of a ship at night I have heard the sunset song of the birches Fast rode the knight Forth went the candid man You tell me this is God?
