Raffles and the British Invasion of Java【電子書籍】[ Tim Hannigan ]

On a hot August afternoon in 1811, an army of 10,000 British redcoats splashed ashore through the muddy shallows off Batavia (the former name of Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital) to conquer the Dutch colony of Java. They would remain there for five turbulent years. Drawing on both British and Javanese archival sources, this entertaining and highly readable narrative history-cum-biography explores the bloody battles and furious controversies that marked British rule in Java, and reveals the future founder of Singapore, Thomas Stamford Raffles ? long celebrated as a hero, a liberal and a visionary ? in a shocking new light, showing how he crushed dissent, looted palaces and incited massacres to further his own insatiable ambitions. The book features the dramatic Battle of Batavia, the sinister British expedition to Palembang, the 1812 sacking and looting of Yogyakarta, and various fights between soldiers and civilians, buffaloes and tigers, and Englishmen and Javanese.

The individual or community which has no ideal is to be pitied. For, whatever may happen, there is always a better chance for those who maintain a high ideal than for those who, without one, adventure themselves against the chances and difficulties that surround us. Nothing is more disheartening to the idealist and reformer than to find not only thousands of individuals but whole communities without a guiding star of faith and hope. How fortunate is a place like Port Sunlight, when we compare its history and possibilities with those of London! It is pleasant to realise that what has become a problem of such a very serious kind in London after so many years of haphazard and chance, is happily barred out of the horizon in the definitely schemed plan of the garden city or the model village. But it is one thing to have a scheme or an ideal and another to have a good one. Moreover, as to whether it is good or bad, or wholly or only partially good or bad, the scheme does not always show until it has been some time in operation. In time the awkward corners may be rounded off, or they may become more acute, but the actual life of the community in any so-called model village or town soon proves the value or the unimportance of those features which have been part of the design. What most impresses itself on those who study the industrial village of Port Sunlight is the fact that it is the definite outcome of a genuine ideal. Whether its present state has surpassed the hopes of its founder or has failed to realise them, we can at any rate see that this was meant to be something better than what had been before, and that no effort was to be wanting to secure this. We are sure that the inconsequent charm and the haphazard picturesqueness of an old English village were not the main objects in view, but that the aim was a conveniently planned and healthy settlement laid out with all possible artistic thought on sound business lines. Garden grounds, roads, and open spaces were to be ample without being wasteful, houses were to be picturesque but sensibly planned. Avenues were to be planted and gardens laid out with needful limitations as to size and direction. The individuality of separate gardens was to be subordinated to a definite idea of communal amenity. Variety of plan was to be obtained only within a certain economic range.

If I must tell more tales of Raffles, I can but back to our earliest days together, and fill in the blanks left by discretion in existing annals. In so doing I may indeed fill some small part of an infinitely greater blank, across which you may conceive me to have stretched my canvas for the first frank portrait of my friend. The whole truth cannot harm him now. I shall paint in every wart. Raffles was a villain, when all is written; it is no service to his memory to glaze the fact; yet I have done so myself before to-day. I have omitted whole heinous episodes. I have dwelt unduly on the redeeming side. And this I may do again, blinded even as I write by the gallant glamour that made my villain more to me than any hero. But at least there shall be no more reservations, and as an earnest I shall make no Further secret of the greatest wrong that even Raffles ever did me.

The A. J. Raffles Collection【電子書籍】[ John Kendrick Bangs ]

The A. J. Raffles Collection stands as a prestigious anthology highlighting the fin-de-si?cle fascination with the gentleman thief, an archetype that thrives at the intersection of crime and class, enveloped in charisma and moral ambiguity. This volume brings together an array of narratives that explore the psychological depth and societal implications of the gentleman crook, employing a kaleidoscope of literary styles ? from sharp wit and poignant reflections to high-paced adventure. The collection succeeds in weaving a rich tapestry that underscores the anti-hero's role as a critique of and commentary on socio-economic disparities of the time, marking a significant period in literary history. John Kendrick Bangs and E. W. Hornung, contributors to this collection, provide a fascinating look into the late Victorian and Edwardian eras through the lens of crime fiction and satire. Hornung, notably the creator of the Raffles series, and Bangs, with his penchant for humor and fantasy, come together to offer a multifaceted perspective on themes of justice, honor, and the paradox of the upper-class criminal. Their works, pivotal to the development of crime fiction, reflect the cultural and social dynamics of their time, inviting readers into a world where morality is as fluid as the wealth the protagonists seek to redistribute. For enthusiasts of crime literature and scholars of late 19th to early 20th-century cultural studies, The A. J. Raffles Collection presents an unparalleled opportunity to dive into the evolution of a literary archetype that continues to captivate. This anthology not only offers a comprehensive examination of the gentleman thief motif through its best examples but also serves as a critical lens on the era's social constructs and the ongoing dialogue between ethics and legality. Readers are invited to explore this collection for both its historical significance and its enduring entertainment value, engaging with the complex narratives that challenge our perceptions of right and wrong.

Mr. Justice Raffles & Raffles Further Adventures of the Amateur Cracksman Crime Fiction Series 2 in 1【電子書籍】[ E. W. Hornung ]

Mr. Justice Raffles

After an absence of three weeks, Raffles tells Bunny he has been taking the cure at Carlsbad as an excuse to try to steal jewelry from the wife of moneylender Dan Levy (who Bunny calls Mr. Shylock), but returned early to watch his young cricket prot?g?, Teddy Garland, play at Lord's. At the Albany, however, they catch Teddy writing himself a check from Raffles's checkbook. Raffles easily forgives the distraught Teddy, who is seriously in debt to Levy, due to Levy's unfairly high interest. Raffles sends Teddy to sleep, then discusses Levy with Bunny.

Next morning, Raffles and Bunny trick Levy into accepting money that Levy had loaned to Raffles as payment for Teddy's debts. Back at the Albany, however, Teddy has disappeared. Teddy's father, Mr. Garland, arrives, looking for him. Raffles suggests they check Mr. Garland's home for Teddy, but Teddy isn't there, either. While Raffles goes to search at Lord's, Bunny distracts Teddy's fianc?e, Camilla Belsize, who seems jealous of Raffles's friendship with Teddy. Raffles returns without Teddy, and lies about him to Belsize. Abruptly, Levy and Mr. Garland enter the room. Levy and Raffles do verbal battle with veiled threats. Teddy finally returns, and dismisses Levy from the house. Levy retorts that he owns the house: Mr. Garland has lost it through debt to him.

Later, Levy visits Raffles and Bunny at the Albany. Levy suspects it was Raffles who stole (and then gave back) his wife's jewelry. He offers to forgive Raffles if Raffles will steal a document from an enemy lawyer. Raffles agrees to, on the additional condition that Levy forgive Mr. Garland's remaining interest payments.

Next day, Raffles and Bunny watch Teddy play at Lord's. Bunny talks to Belsize, while Raffles leaves to prepare the burglary. At night, Bunny joins Raffles in the lawyer's house, where Raffles swaps Levy's document with a fake. They escape the house, while avoiding two bruisers who are chasing them under orders of Levy. They return to Levy, but Levy hurls a whiskey decanter at Raffles's face and throws the document into the fire. Bunny knocks Levy to the floor, rendering him unconscious.

Raffles recovers, and he and Bunny drag Levy, via a canoe on the nearby river, to an empty house's tower. Raffles drugs Bunny's food, so that Bunny sleeps; when he wakes, Bunny sees Levy is awake, and restrained. Raffles playacts as a judge, and puts Levy on trial. Raffles blackmails Levy into signing off Mr. Garland's debt, and also into writing Raffles a check, though Bunny disapproves. Raffles leaves to cash it. Levy tries to struggle against Bunny, but Bunny scares him off with a revolver, which mysteriously returns to his hand it drops to a lower floor. Raffles returns and sends Bunny to the Albany, but Bunny instead visits Belsize. She confesses that she had secretly been in the tower, and had returned the revolver to Bunny's hand unseen, but makes Bunny swear not to tell.

THE COMPLETE RAFFLES SERIES is a landmark collection that brings together the riveting tales of A.J. Raffles, a gentleman thief par excellence, as conceived by E.W. Hornung and continued in the same vein by John Kendrick Bangs. This anthology presents a panorama of crimes and misdemeanors, unraveling within the decorous bounds of late Victorian and Edwardian society. It showcases a rich diversity of literary stylesfrom the tightly plotted adventures in 'The Amateur Cracksman' to the whimsical and speculative continuations in 'R. Holmes & Co.' The collection stands out for its blend of humor, intrigue, and a nuanced exploration of ethical ambiguity, making it a significant touchstone in the realm of crime fiction and a testament to the versatility of its characters and their enduring appeal. The contributing authors, Hornung and Bangs, come from distinct literary backgrounds yet converge in their fascination with Raffles. Hornung, the brother-in-law to Arthur Conan Doyle, ventures into a shadowy world that serves almost as a mirror to the Holmesian universewhere intellect is wielded for illicit purposes. Bangs, known for his satirical and speculative works, extends this universe by infusing it with a playful irreverence, thereby enriching the canon with an American twist on British criminal charm. Their combined efforts offer a unique exploration of turn-of-the-century attitudes towards crime, heroism, and morality. This anthology is an invitation to delve into the thrilling world of Raffles and his companions, a must-read for aficionados of classic crime literature. It affords readers a multi-faceted view of a bygone era, combined with timeless narratives of cunning and adventure. By traversing the broad spectrum of styles and themes within these pages, one gains not only entertainment but also a deeper appreciation for the art of storytelling as practiced by Hornung and Bangs. This collection is an essential volume for those seeking to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of criminal adventures and the peculiar charm of Raffles, the gentleman thief whose legacy continues to captivate.

The Doings of Raffles Haw【電子書籍】[ Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ]

I'm afraid that he won't come, said Laura McIntyre, in a disconsolate voice. "Why not?" "Oh, look at the weather; it is something too awful." As she spoke a whirl of snow beat with a muffled patter against the cosy red-curtained window, while a long blast of wind shrieked and whistled through the branches of the great white-limbed elms which skirted the garden. Robert McIntyre rose from the sketch upon which he had been working, and taking one of the lamps in his hand peered out into the darkness. The long skeleton limbs of the bare trees tossed and quivered dimly amid the whirling drift. His sister sat by the fire, her fancy-work in her lap, and looked up at her brothers profile which showed against the brilliant yellow light. It was a handsome face, young and fair and clear cut, with wavy brown hair combed backwards and rippling down into that outward curve at the ends which one associates with the artistic temperament. There was refinement too in his slightly puckered eyes, his dainty gold-rimmed pince-nez glasses, and in the black velveteen coat which caught the light so richly upon its shoulder. In his mouth only there was somethingーa suspicion of coarseness, a possibility of weaknessーwhich in the eyes of some, and of his sister among them, marred the grace and beauty of his features. Yet, as he was wont himself to say, when one thinks that each poor mortal is heir to a legacy of every evil trait or bodily taint of so vast a line of ancestors, lucky indeed is the man who does not find that Nature has scored up some long-owing family debt upon his features. And indeed in this case the remorseless creditor had gone so far as to exact a claim from the lady also, though in her case the extreme beauty of the upper part of the face drew the eye away from any weakness which might be found in the lower. She was darker than her brotherーso dark that her heavily coiled hair seemed to be black until the light shone slantwise across it. The delicate, half-petulant features, the finely traced brows, and the thoughtful, humorous eyes were all perfect in their way, and yet the combination left something to be desired. There was a vague sense of a flaw somewhere, in feature or in expression, which resolved itself, when analysed, into a slight out-turning and droop of the lower lip; small indeed, and yet pronounced enough to turn what would have been a beautiful face into a merely pretty one. Very despondent and somewhat cross she looked as she leaned back in the armchair, the tangle of bright-coloured silks and of drab holland upon her lap, her hands clasped behind her head, with her snowy forearms and little pink elbows projecting on either side.
