Reclaiming the Sky 9/11 and the Untold Story of the Men and Women Who Kept America Flying【電子書籍】[ Tom Murphy ]

"When asked about the death toll from the September 11th attacks, New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani stated simply and eloquently that the number would likely be ""more than any of us can bear."" He was right, of course. Yet often obscured in that inconceivable number is the fact that among those who died, as well as those who lived and continue to live, were many thousands of aviation professionals with names, families, lives, and individual experiences that are an important part of the 9/11 story. Some five years later, these stories are being told for the first time in Reclaiming the Sky. In the pages of this book, you will meet some of the people whose hard work propels a critical social and economic force -- the aviation industry -- and who on the morning of September 11th, were suddenly thrust into front-line positions in the battle to put our nation back on its feet. For many of these men and women and their families, the pain and after-effects of 9/11 are exceptionally acute, but their stories will serve as touchpoints for the thousands of people whose journey to closure is still ongoing. This powerful and ultimately uplifting book not only honors the heroes of September 11th, it also offers common ground to those in search of meaning and purpose in a changed world -- both in and outside of the air travel industry -- and gives Americans in all walks of life something they still seek five years after 9/11: the courage and strength to move forward."

Reclaiming Critical Remix Video The Role of Sampling in Transformative Works【電子書籍】[ Owen Gallagher ]

Remix is now considered by many to be a form of derivative work, but such generalizations have resulted in numerous non-commercial remixes being wrongfully accused of copyright infringement. Gallagher argues, however, that remix is a fundamentally transformative practice. The assumption that cultural works should be considered a form of private property is called into question in the digital age; thus, he proposes an alternative system to balance the economic interests of cultural producers with the ability of the public to engage with a growing intellectual commons of cultural works. Multimodal analyses of both remixed and non-remixed intertextual work, with a particular focus on examples of critical remix video, fuel the discussion, synthesizing a number of investigative methods including semiotic, rhetorical and ideological analysis.

Beyond Capitalist Dystopia Reclaiming Freedom and Democracy in the Age of Global Crises【電子書籍】[ Davor D?alto ]

This provocative book interrogates the ideology of capitalism as the "default" narrative underpinning various mainstream ideologies in the contemporary world. The book explores the genesis, structure and functioning of this ideological narrative, provides its critical assessment and outlines a possible alternative, beyond the logic of capitalism and toward a truly free and democratic society.

The book takes a broad view of the major global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and persuasively argue that, in order to resolve any of the major global problems, from the ongoing ecological crisis to economic and geopolitical issues, we need to confront the capitalist system. To unpack the logic of contemporary capitalist ideology, and the way it structures our inter-personal and political relations, the book gives an analysis of the "end of ideology" narrative and offers a critical assessment of the ideas behind the widely used but fundamentally flawed concept of "Liberal democracy." The book revisits metaphysical foundations behind the ideology of capitalism, exposing their secular-religious dimension, and their immanent oppressiveness. Based on this deconstruction of the metaphysical foundations implicit in (Neo)Liberalism and capitalism, the book offers a way in which alternative metaphysical foundations can be constructed to allow for different socio-political and economic models that would be based on a radical affirmation of freedom and democracy, as well as human responsibility for the natural environment.

Beyond Capitalist Dystopia: Reclaiming Freedom and Democracy in the Age of Global Crises will be of great interest to anyone searching for alternatives to the pervasive ideology of capitalism as well as students and researchers active in various fields in the humanities and social sciences.

Our Exodus Story Reclaiming the Image of God【電子書籍】[ Robert P. Vande Kappelle ]

Every person has an exodus story, a vast, complex, multilayered spiritual journey. On the one hand, it is a biological journey from birth to death, and a social journey from infancy to adulthood. In this regard, it is a story of growing up, of leaving home and taking risks, of making mistakes and learning from them, of reaching goals and surpassing them. Our Exodus Story speaks of human life as a gossamer bridge that binds us as people with God, others, and with our inner being. This journey of faith is described as a "holy balancing act" between the three sources of authority for people of faith--experience, Scripture, and tradition. Bonded umbilically to one another and to God, each of us bears exodus-like and cross-like experiences. Personality and spirituality are deeply interrelated, so much that neither function adequately apart from the other. Though not identical, they strive to be in sync, balancing one another in profound and intimate ways. Personality takes the lead, and where personality goes, spirituality follows, though not blindly or passively. Spirituality has its own voice, and when its desires are addressed and heeded, personality thrives. This book is unique in that each of its four protagonists exhibits distinct dominant personality characteristics, their experiences bearing archetypal relevance and universal appeal. Their stories, individual and combined, are epic, the protagonists and families as complex as their biblical patriarchal and matriarchal counterparts, yet as current as today's top stories. As you read, you are invited on your own inner journey to peace, wholeness, and well-being.

The Cost of Cheap Grace Reclaiming the Value of Discipleship【電子書籍】[ Bill Hull ]

What is a Christian?
At the most basic level, a Christian is a disciple of Jesus Christ. And yet many Christians today couldn’t tell you what a disciple of Jesus Christ is, or would even think of themselves as disciples. And yet in the Great Commission, Jesus specifically called us to make disciples. Everything else is secondary.

The Cost of Cheap Grace is an extended, sweeping, bold, and bracing call to repentance for where we’ve let secondary things subvert our commitment to discipleship, and a compelling vision for discipleship as the basis of the gospel in all its world-changing, subversive power.

Reclaiming Discipline for Education Knowledge, relationships and the birth of community【電子書籍】[ James MacAllister ]

Discipline is of profound educational importance, both inside educational institutions and outside of them in personal and social life. Reclaiming Discipline for Education revisits neglected philosophical ideas about discipline in education and uses these ideas to re-think practices and discourses of discipline in education today.

Chapters in this book trace the evolution of thought regarding discipline in education all the way from Kant through to Durkheim, Foucault, Peters, Dewey and Macmurray. MacAllister also critically examines the strengths and weaknesses of contemporary school discipline practices in the UK, the US and Australia, including behaviour management, zero tolerance and restorative approaches. The educational credentials of psychological constructs of grit and self-discipline are also questioned.

This book concludes by considering the current and future state of discipline in education on the basis of the different philosophical, practical and policy perspectives discussed. In particular, MacAllister examines why it is problematic to consider practices of discipline in isolation from the wider purposes of education. This book is suitable for an international audience and should be read by anyone who is interested in education and educational leadership, as well as those interested in the philosophy of education.

Reclaiming Adoption Missional Living Through the Rediscovery of Abba Father【電子書籍】[ Dan Cruver ]

Delight in God’s delight in you.

One of the ambitious dreams that Reclaiming Adoption and its authors share with the Apostle Paul is that when Christians hear the word adoption, they will think first about their adoption by God. This book is premised on the belief that behind the Parable of the Prodigal Son(s) is Scripture’s teaching on adoption. The story of the Bible is that God the Father sent his only true and eternal Son on a mission, and that mission was to bring many wayward and rebellious sons home to glory (Hebrews 2:10) in order to adopt them into his family. That is the Story behind the story of the Prodigal Sons.

If Christians learn to first think about their adoption by God, and only then about the adoption of children, they will enjoy deeper communion with the God who is love, and experience greater missional engagement with the pain and suffering of this world. Reclaiming Adoption can transform the way you view and live in this world for the glory of God and the good of our world’s most needy.

Reclaiming Adoption Missional Living Through the Rediscovery of Abba Father【電子書籍】[ John Piper, Scotty Smith, Richard Phillips, Jason Kovacs ]

One of the ambitious dreams that Reclaiming Adoption and its authors share with the Apostle Paul is that when Christians hear the word adoption, they will think first about their adoption by God. As it now stands, Christians usually think first about the adoption of children. Reclaiming Adoption sets out to change this situation by providing breathtaking views of Gods love for and delight in His children views that will free you to live boldly in this world from Gods acceptance, not in order to gain it. Reclaiming Adoption begins by examining Jesus Parable of the Prodigal Son because it ultimately puts God the Fathers love on display a love that embraces the younger son with uninhibited joy (Luke 15:20) and goes out to entreat the self-righteous older son to come join the celebration (Luke 15:28). The book is premised on the belief that behind the Parable of the Prodigal Son(s) is Scriptures teaching on adoption. The story of the Bible is that God the Father sent his only true and eternal Son on a mission, and that mission was to bring many wayward and rebellious sons home to glory (Hebrews 2:10) in order to adopt them into His family. That is the Story behind the story of the Prodigal Sons. It is the only story that gives our stories any meaning or significance. Dan Cruver and his co-authors are convinced that if Christians learn to first think about their adoption by God, and only then about the adoption of children, they will enjoy deeper communion with the God who is love, and experience greater missional engagement with the pain and suffering of this world. Thats what this book is about. What the orphan, the stranger, and the marginalized in our world need most is churches that are filled with Christians who live daily in the reality of Gods delight in them. Reclaiming Adoption can transform the way you view and live in this world for the glory of God and the good of our worlds most needy.

City Schools and the American Dream Reclaiming the Promise of American Education【電子書籍】[ Pedro Noguera ]

What will it take for urban schools to achieve the kind of academic performance required by new state and national educational standards? How can classroom teachers in city schools help to close the achievement gap? What can restore public confidence in public schools?

Pedro Noguera?argues that higher standards and more tests, by themselves, will not make low-income urban students any smarter and the schools they attend more successful without substantial investment in the communities in which they live. Drawing on extensive research performed in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and Richmond, Noguera demonstrates how school and student achievement is influenced by social forces such as demographic change, poverty, drug trafficking, violence, and social inequity. Readers get a detailed glimpse into the lives of teachers and students working "against the odds" to succeed. Noguera sends a strong message to those who would have urban schools “shape up or shut down”: invest in the future of these students and schools, and we can reach the kind of achievement and success that typify only more privileged communities.

Public schools are the last best hope for many poor families living in cities across the nation. Noguera gives politicians, policymakers, and the public its own standard to achieveーprovide the basic economic and social support so that teachers and students can get the job done!

“In this engaging book,?Pedro Noguera?provides a compelling vision of the problems plaguing urban schools and how to address them.?City Schools and the American Dream?is replete with insights from a scholar and former activist who makes great use of both personal and professional experiences.”
ーWilliam Julius Wilson, Harvard University

Trade Grumbling for GratitudeーExperience God like Never Before

The apostle Paul instructed the Philippians to be anxious in nothing and thankful in everything. And when he said everythingーhe meant everything. We can all agree that this is easier said than done. Disappointments and discontent may cause you to slip into dissatisfaction, and grumbling becomes a state of mindーgratitude seems impossible to find. However, what if this is the precise reason you lack the joy of a God-filled life? Instead of a reaction to when things are going well, what if gratitude is actually necessary to knowing the hope of our gracious God?

This is exactly what Pastor Dustin Crowe identifies in The Grumbler’s Guide to Giving Thanks. Dustin examines the biblical foundations of thankfulness and traces how it can reshape every-day Christian living. When we express gratitude in all things, we not only praise our Creator, we also get to know Him better. With The Grumbler’s Guide, you’ll learn how to practice thanksgiving in both simple and extraordinary ways, even when you’re tempted to dwell on the negative. You’ll find your outlook on life realigned to see the hand of God in everything, strengthening your trust in Him. And in doing so, you’ll find greater, more joy-filled reasons to continue expressing thanks to our good and generous God.

Reclaiming Archaeology Beyond the Tropes of Modernity【

Archaeology has been an important source of metaphors for some of the key intellectuals of the 20th century: Sigmund Freud, Walter Benjamin, Alois Riegl and Michel Foucault, amongst many others. However, this power has also turned against archaeology, because the discipline has been dealt with perfunctorily as a mere provider of metaphors that other intellectuals have exploited. Scholars from different fields continue to explore areas in which archaeologists have been working for over two centuries, with little or no reference to the discipline. It seems that excavation, stratigraphy or ruins only become important at a trans-disciplinary level when people from outside archaeology pay attention to them and somehow dematerialize them. Meanwhile, archaeologists have been usually more interested in borrowing theories from other fields, rather than in developing the theoretical potential of the same concepts that other thinkers find so useful.

The time is ripe for archaeologists to address a wider audience and engage in theoretical debates from a position of equality, not of subalternity. Reclaiming Archaeology explores how archaeology can be useful to rethink modernity’s big issues, and more specifically late modernity (broadly understood as the 20th and 21st centuries). The book contains a series of original essays, not necessarily following the conventional academic rules of archaeological writing or thinking, allowing rhetoric to have its place in disclosing the archaeological. In each of the four sections that constitute this book (method, time, heritage and materiality), the contributors deal with different archaeological tropes, such as excavation, surface/depth, genealogy, ruins, fragments, repressed memories and traces. They criticize their modernist implications and rework them in creative ways, in order to show the power of archaeology not just to understand the past, but also the present.

Reclaiming Archaeology includes essays from a diverse array of archaeologists who have dealt in one way or another with modernity, including scholars from non-Anglophone countries who have approached the issue in original ways during recent years, as well as contributors from other fields who engage in a creative dialogue with archaeology and the work of archaeologists.

The Art of Looking Back A painter, an obsession, and reclaiming the gaze【電子書籍】[ Theresa Kishkan ]

A former artist’s model and muse reclaims her image and voice, dismantling the male gaze that once framed her.

At 23, Theresa Kishkan met an artist who became obsessed with her. She was young, she was flattered, and the situation quickly overwhelmed her. He drew and painted her for a few months, after which she went away for a year. When she returned, she was determined not to resume the relationship.

But the artist made contact with her after the birth of her first child and became a family friend, bringing gifts of paintings. Those images hung in Theresa’s home, and one in particular reminded her almost daily of her younger self, in ways both positive and not so much. She avoided looking too closely at his images of her and at his long, passionate and often troubling letters.

Decades later, while sorting old correspondence, she was taken back to those early days and began, at last, to write about her relationship with the now-deceased artist. The Art of Looking Back is a meditation on the male gaze, on reclaiming one's younger self, and on agency: how we lose it, how we find it again. This poetic memoir asks questions about older men and younger women and girls, and the persistence of that dynamic in art.

Throwing the Baby Out with the Holy Water Reclaiming Forgotten Riches of Our Faith【電子書籍】[ Stephen White ]

This book is intended for those who feel something is missing. For those who cherish their Reformation heritage but experience the lack of a rooted faith. For those who crave spiritual depth yet have been cautioned against looking too far back. For those who rightly suspect that the ancient Church holds treasures we’ve overlooked, and who wish to recover them without compromising the gospel in the process. I am one of those people. I am Protestant. I am grateful for the clarity, conviction, and gospel urgency that runs through the best of the Reformation tradition. However, I have also learned that the Reformation was not a blank slate. It was a return ー a return to something already present in the early Church, long before the medieval corruptions that the Reformers rightly challenged. That Early Church is ours too. The wisdom of the desert fathers is ours. The profound thinking of Catholic theologians, when in step with Scripture, is ours. The reverence of liturgical worship is ours. Mary’s example of discipleship is ours. The practice of confession is ours. These are not “Catholic things” that we’re borrowing. They are Christian things we left behind. The goal of this book is not to argue for reunion with Rome. It’s not to flatten doctrinal differences or pretend that the Reformation doesn’t matter. It does matter ー deeply. However, recovering lost wisdom does not betray the gospel; instead, it deepens our experience of it. It anchors us more fully in the historical Church and strengthens our present discipleship. We live in an age of spiritual shallowness. Attention spans are short. Formation is thin. Many of our churches have become expressions of the broader culture ー anxious, fragmented, performative, over-programmed, and emotionally underdeveloped. Our theological systems are sound, but our souls are brittle. What we need isn’t novelty; it’s rootedness. And there is no root system richer than the one the Spirit has cultivated through two thousand years of global, historic Christianity. That root system includes more than just Calvin and Luther; it encompasses Irenaeus, Benedict, Teresa of ?vila, and yes, even Aquinas. It comprises the monastics and the mystics, along with rhythms and practices that were born in the desert and tested by fire. We don’t honor our Protestant ancestors by staying shallow. We honor them by going deeper ー by seeking the full maturity that the Church was always meant to grow into. If we are to become a people of resilience, depth, and beauty again, we must recover the practices and perspectives we once discarded. We must learn to live not only as people of truth, but as people of presence ー soaked in prayer, humility, and the kind of holiness that cannot be faked. This introduction is a doorway. In the pages ahead, we will explore what was lostーnot to romanticize the past, but to recover what still holds the power to shape our future. We will examine ancient practices like confession, forgotten figures like the desert fathers, neglected teachings about Mary, and the immense intellectual and spiritual wealth of Catholic theologians who never stopped loving Scripture and Christ. We will ask hard questions: Can Protestants re-engage with these issues without compromising our convictions? Can we recover a reverence for tradition without losing our dependence on Scripture? Can we build a Protestant future that is spiritually rich, historically informed, and deeply Christ-centered? I believe the answer is yes.
