Redondo Beach【電子書籍】[ Historical Commission of Redondo Beach ]

Redondo Beach in the 1910s and 1920s was one of the best-attended weekend getaway spots in America. The beaches, pier, and downtown were jammed with vacationers and the Hollywood crowd. Water sports mavens drawn to the area included the great surfing pioneer George Freeth, who became a local icon. At one time, Redondo Beach boasted the world?s largest indoor plunge along with visionary tycoon Henry Huntington?s enormous Hotel Redondo overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The town grew as an import-export point for the City of Los Angeles until political powers decided to put its main port in nearby San Pedro. Since World War II, Redondo Beach has evinced a quaint charm as the jewel city of Santa Monica Bay?s southerly shores.

Beach Mexican Assimilation & Identity in Redondo Beach【電子書籍】[ Alex Moreno Areyan ]

Alex Moreno Areyan's odyssey of growing up Latino in white upper-middle-class Redondo Beach in the 1950s presents a story of assimilation different from that experienced by Mexican Americans in larger barrios. His annual "white lie" to classmates was that his father got a job up north and the family was moving. They moved, all right--in a 1941 Plymouth with the harvest. In Marysville, Meridian and Mendota, they lived in tents and cars, under trucks and in corrugated tin hovels while picking cotton, tomatoes, peaches, walnuts and plums. The kid once threatened with permanent expulsion from Redondo Union High for speaking Spanish on campus eventually received a plaque from the City of Redondo Beach for writing the Mexican American history of the city. "Beach Mexican" proves the journey wasn't easy.

The Redondo Beach Police Department dates to May 9, 1892, when Marshall S. Rogers was appointed as the city?s first marshal. One of the first city ordinances prohibited the discharge of firearms within city limits and provided the option for hiring of a deputy ?if needed.? He was needed, of course, as the city would grow into a major West Coast resort by the 1920s. The department adapted through the changes brought on by the Depression, World War II, and the postwar boom, serving and protecting citizens and fighting crime both unique to beach-city life as well as changing times while enforcing all laws for residents and tourists alike across the dawns of two centuries. In the 21st century, more than 250 sworn officers, support personnel, and volunteers serve one of Southern California?s most respected and innovative departments.

Last Dance In Redondo Beach【電子書籍】[ Michael J. Katz ]

LAST DANCE IN REDONDO BEACH is the second in the acclaimed Andy Sussman/Murray Glick comic mystery trilogy from Michael J. Katz.

"What a lot of raffish, rowdy, reprehensible people Michael Katz has assembled on Redondo Beach. I loved hanging out with them, and I was sorry when the party was over."
Donald Westlake

THE STORY: Sportscaster Andy Sussman is plunged into the raucous and sometimes hilarious word of pro wrestling when Dr. Double XX drowns during the Network Celebrity Superstars race. Andy’s buddy, detective Murray Glick, joins him straight from one of his Mystery Cruises to help solve the case.

"[Andy Sussman's] dogged pursuit of the facts is consistently beguiling. Katz' character is as relentless in the pursuit of the story as Gregory McDonald's Irwin Fletcher, and he could just as easily be played by Chevy Chase."
New York Newsday

"Katz makes the men behind the gaudy facades believable figures rather than comic grotesques...the unmasking of both victim and killer is cleverly and comically plotted."
Los Angeles Times

"The second adventure of Andy Sussman, an out-of-shape, un-suave personality, should delight his fans...Funny, poignant, and definitely human."
Sara Paretsky

"Michael Katz is one of the wittier crime writers to come along in some time. I enjoyed Last Dance In Redondo Beach every wry step of the way. Don't miss it!"
Roger L. Simon

Piers have always drawn people to the mysterious wonder of the ocean. The ability to seemingly walk on water with the construction of a pier has created for humans a sense of temporary mastery of the majestic and merciless sea. The Southern California shoreline has always attracted tourists from near and far to experience the natural beauty of the coastline. Capitalizing on the natural and man-made appeal of the ocean and the pleasure pier, Henry Huntington created in Redondo Beach a fantasyland of wonder and excitement for beachgoers in the early 20th century. As one of the major rivals to the pleasure piers of Santa Monica, Ocean Park, and Venice to the north, the Endless Pier and later the adjacent Monstad Pier in Redondo Beach drew in thousands of tourists a day. Pleasure-seekers can still fish, enjoy dinner and music, shop, or simply take a nighttime stroll over the water on today?s Municipal Pier?remnants from the heyday of Redondo Beach?s pleasure pier of the early 20th century.
