The world is full of interesting people, and it has been George Weigel's good fortune to have known many such personalities in a variety of fields: politics, religion, the arts and sciences, journalism, the academy, entertainment, and sports. In this collection of reminiscences and elegies, the best-selling author of the definitive biography of Pope Saint John Paul II remembers these men and women from inside the convictions that formed them.

Whether he is sketching the lives of Nobel Prize?winning scientists, major league baseball managers, princes of the Church, television personalities, or history-making political leaders, Weigel tries to understand, and help readers understand, the deep truths of the human condition illuminated by each of these not-forgotten lives.

Written with verve, insight, and an appreciation for the consequential lives that have touched his own, Not Forgotten fills out the autobiographical portrait that George Weigel began painting in Lessons in Hope: My Unexpected Life with Saint John Paul II, while offering a backstage view of some of the men and women who have shaped the turbulent history of our times.

The 60 intriguing lives that he writes about are a wide diversity of unique characters and personalities, including Albert Einstein, William F. Reminiscences about Gardens that Grew by Themselves An Autobiographical Essay about Growing up in Bangladesh【電子書籍】[ Noreen Brenner ]

I traverse the routes of memory

To revisit sunny afternoons

Spent in childhood’s gardens

Many years ago, I used to spend my afternoons in a garden ? an Eden of lush vegetation, birds and myriad insect life, bathed in that brilliant light only found in the tropics, the latitudes where Earth dons her loveliest raiment. The intense colors of those days are woven into the texture of my quintessential being, to be freed onto the blank page.

Turn back the clock, zoom in on a country formed by the silt of the three great rivers that flow to the Bay of Bengal: Padma (the Ganges, nicknamed Buriganga), Meghna, Jamuna, and their countless tributaries. It is the land of the flat delta, the alluvial soil (among the most fertile in the world) being deposited by the rivers: it is Eastern Bengal, Bangladesh today. Once the granary of India, erstwhile producer of Dhaka muslin ? a luxurious fabric prized in the seventeenth century imperial courts of Europe and Asia. Here the climate is that of an eternal greenhouse, hot and humid, crops grow throughout the year. Nature’s cornucopia includes palm trees, papaya, hibiscus, and other manifestations of nigh infinite bio-diversity that spring up beside the road, on the muddy footpath, planted by no man’s hand. Since time immemorial the delta’s loam has sustained civilization. Particularly since the cultivation of rice many thousands of years ago, civilization has flourished here, the fecund earth carefully cultivated to bring out the best of its natural predisposition to be fruitful. Rice and paddy fields chequer the landscape as far as the gaze can reach. An unbroken cultural tradition that dates back to antiquity expresses itself in poetry, song, dance and architecture that is graceful and pleasing to behold.

Reminiscences of a Golden-ager【電子書籍】[ H B Subrahmanyam ]
|

A golden-aged knows the joys and sorrows of a full life. Old age has many gainful privileges. One of them is the respect attendant with age and the other is free time to reminisce about the distant past.

Being an honourable senior citizen, like others of my ilk, I am fortunate. I have no constraint of time. Taking advantage of it, I reminisce my bygone days endlessly closing my eyes and activating my cerebrum. However, I do that selectively limiting only to the episodes that bring cheer to me. Those endowed with the normal prudence will never recall the unpleasant as it is an unwelcome guest.

I often share my fond memories with my old friends, children and grandchildren. I never miss an opportunity to narrate the memories that I relish. The best tunes are played on the oldest fiddles.

My receptive friends goaded, “There is nothing new in the incidents you narrate with wild gusto; they are obvious; we also had experienced them. However, why don’t you put them in writing for the sake of posterity?”

After reading, the readers may not hold me in their arms, but certainly, hold my memories in high regard because my memories are theirs too. With this effort, I just did what they always wanted to do. My intention is to refuel, refresh and rejuvenate their memory.

Reminiscences of Big I【電子書籍】[ Lieutenant William Nathaniel Wood ]
|

Pickett's charge at Gettysburg probably has been the theme of more writing than any other action of the Civil War. Common soldiers, nurses, surgeons, journalists, foreign observers, local residents and generals have all recounted their experiences and impressions. But relatively few company commanders who participated in that grand but futile assault have left a record of what they saw and did. Indeed, and especially on the Confederate side, the role of junior officers as told by themselves, constitutes a major gap in Civil War literature. Because of this fact, William Nathaniel Wood's reminiscences of Gettysburg and the dozen other major battles in which he participated is of considerably greater value than the usual memoir.
"Wood entered the Monticello Guard of Charlottesville, Co. A, Nineteenth Virginia Regiment, on July 20th, 1861, the evening before the first battle of Manassas, and had his 'baptism of fire' the next day. He was soon promoted to a Lieutenancy, and for much of the latter part of the war, was in command of the Company. At the battle of Gettysburg, after Captain Culin was wounded, he commanded the company, and led it to the stone wall, and what is more wonderful, he went back under the most terrific fire from the stone wall and on each flank. His clothing was riddled with shot, but he escaped with a slight scratch under one arm. Wood was, I think, in every encounter in which his company was engaged during the whole war, and he, with what was left of it, was captured at Tailor's Creek, April 6th, 1865, just three days before Lee's surrender."ーC. His Last Bow ? Some Later Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes【電子書籍】[ Arthur Conan Doyle ]
|

In "His Last Bow ? Some Later Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes," Arthur Conan Doyle crafts a masterful collection of short stories that mark an evocative farewell to his iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes. Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, during a time of societal upheaval and war, these narratives showcase Doyle's signature blend of sharp wit and astute observation, melding the intricacies of human psychology with the rigorous deductions of Holmes. Notably, the story "His Last Bow" serves as a poignant coda, placing Holmes amidst the brewing tensions of impending conflict, highlighting themes of loyalty, heroism, and the inexorable passage of time. The work exhibits a sophistication in style, featuring richly developed characters and atmospheric settings, befitting the era's literary context. Arthur Conan Doyle, a trained physician, drew upon his keen observational skills and profound interest in the human condition to create tales that transcend mere detective fiction. The author's personal experiences during the Boer War, coupled with his evolving perspective on honor and duty, provided fertile ground for the narratives contained within this collection. His literary journey reflects an enduring exploration of moral dilemmas and the complexities of human behavior, which resonate deeply in these later Holmes stories. This collection is a must-read for fans of detective fiction and scholars alike, as it encapsulates the essence of Doyle's literary legacy. "His Last Bow" not only revisits a beloved character but also offers insights into a transformative period in English history through the lens of intrigue and intellect. This enduring work serves as both a fitting tribute to Sherlock Holmes and a compelling reflection on the timeless struggles of humanity.

Preserving German Texan Identity Reminiscences of William A. Trenckmann, 1859?1935【電子書籍】[ Walter L. Buenger ]
|

Born in Millheim, Texas, to a family of German immigrants who moved to Texas in the wake of the 1848 revolution, William Andreas Trenckmann was a teacher, journalist, and publisher who successfully combined his German heritage with a new, distinctly Texan identity. His education was cultivated at the brand new Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, where he distinguished himself as the valedictorian of the first graduating class; he later served on the college’s board of directors and was even offered the presidency. From 1907 to 1909, he represented Austin County in the Texas legislature. Trenckmann’s lasting contribution to Texas history, however, was the creation of Das Wochenblatt, a German-language weekly newspaper that he edited and published for over forty years.

Das Wochenblatt became a popular and respected source of information for German-speaking immigrants, their descendants, and the Texas communities where they lived and worked. Through the paper, Trenckmann advocated for civil liberties and free elections. He also vigorously opposed prohibition, the Ku Klux Klan, and later the rise of Adolf Hitler and National Socialism. When the United States entered World War I, many German-language publications were suspended or otherwise heavily censored, but Trenckmann’s newspaper was granted a rare exemption from the wartime government.

From 1931 to 1933, Trenckmann serialized his memoirs, Erlebtes und Beobachtetes, or “experiences and observations.” In Preserving German Texan Identity, historians Walter L. Buenger and Walter D. Kamphoefner present a revised and annotated translation of those memoirs as a revealing window into the lives of German Texans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

|

This early work by Alfred Russel Wallace was originally published in 1916 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Alfred Russel Wallace: Letters and Reminiscences, Vol. 1.' is a collection of correspondence between Wallace and other scientists, including Charles Darwin. Alfred Russel Wallace was born on 8th January 1823 in the village of Llanbadoc, in Monmouthshire, Wales. Wallace was inspired by the travelling naturalists of the day and decided to begin his exploration career collecting specimens in the Amazon rainforest. He explored the Rio Negra for four years, making notes on the peoples and languages he encountered as well as the geography, flora, and fauna. While travelling, Wallace refined his thoughts about evolution and in 1858 he outlined his theory of natural selection in an article he sent to Charles Darwin. Wallace made a huge contribution to the natural sciences and he will continue to be remembered as one of the key figures in the development of evolutionary theory.

Reminiscences of Frontier Life【電子書籍】[ Isaac B. Hammond ]

"Calhoun, half conscious, bleeding and stunned, crawled from the ruin, only to be pounced upon, scalped and left for dead...He crawled painfully ...carrying his scalp in his hand." -Isaac B. Hammond
"Isaac Hammond was an experienced builder of mining machinery...had been trying to put together an Alaska 'dredge scheme.'" -The Northern Gold Fleet: Twentieth-century Gold Dredging in Alaska (1996)
"Hammond produced not only bucket-line dredges for use on the Snake but others for the Alaska goldfields." - A History of Gold Dredging in Idaho (2016)
"Hammond, the veteran mine equipment man and president of the Hammond Manufacturing Company...has had over 20 years' experience in mine equipment, during which time he has seen thousands of the best properties on the continent." -Mining Journal (1901)

Heading to the Rocky Mountains at the age of 23 after being rejected for Civil War duty in the mid-1860s, successful gold miner Isaac B. Hammond's relates his 33 years of frontier life in Kansas, Nebraska, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, Dakota Territory, Alaska, Washington, and British Columbia. His well-written 1904 book is aptly titled "Reminiscences of Frontier Life."

Hammond's always-interesting narrative of the Old West includes harrowing personal accounts of hostile tribes, buffalo stampedes, bears and panthers, prairie fire, blizzards, homesteading, extreme thirst, sourdough bread, mule whacking, desperadoes, vigilance committees, prospecting, saloon fights, lynchings, railroad construction, Sioux railroad attacks, scalpings, train wrecks, mine salting, miner's camps, gold stampeeds, swindles, tidal waves, saw mills, and steamers.

In describing a narrow escape from a prairie fire, Hammond writes:

"By this time the main body of the fire, together with the fires I had lit, came rushing down upon us with such fierce heat that it seemed as if we must perish in the flames or be suffocated with the smoke. By breathing through a handful of earth, I could get some little relief. My poor horse reeled from side to side, like a drunken man, and finally dropped..."

Hammond's camp life provides some comic relief at times, such as troubles his with a pack mule who ruined their flour supply in a creek:

"The mule was looked upon as a bad animal, and he had not a friend in the crowd...Each man felt as if he owed him a whipping....Not satisfied with the earth to graze upon, he must needs make an attack on our short supply of bacon to appease his enormous appetite. But this mule was no fool, and seemed to know there was danger in the air...kept at a respectful distance, evidently waiting until we would calm down...."

Ultimately becoming a highly successful manufacturer of mining dredges that now litter the landscape of former gold boom districts, Hammond never forgot his early adventures or the hardships he faced down in helping to tame the Old West.

More about the author:

Isaac B. Hammond was born in New York in 1844. During his childhood, the family removed to Kankakee, Ill., and at the age of 23 Hammond pushed still farther west, and entered the service of the Union Pacific R.R., in the construction department of which he served until the transcontinental line was completed.

He then went to Deadwood, and was engaged for many years in the manufacture of stamping and other machinery used in the production of gold.

In 1888 he went to Alaska, whence he was sent to London to purchase a 120-stamp mill for use in the notorious Bear's Nest mine, near Douglas. After the collapse of that enterprise, Hammond bought the machinery and brought it to Portland, Ore., where he organized the Union Electric Power Co.

My Reminiscences of the Civil War With the Stonewall Brigade and the Immortal 600【電子書籍】[ Alfred Mallory Edgar ]
|

Alfred Mallory Edgar was born on July 10, 1837, in Greenbrier County, [West] Virginia, the son of Archer Edgar and Nancy Howe Pearis. Their mill, known as Edgar's Mill, is now the site of present day Ronceverte, West Virginia. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the family owned ten slaves, five males and five females, ranging in age from 7 to 39 years old.

On May 9, 1861, at 23 years of age, Alfred volunteered for service in the Greenbrier Rifles, which would become part of the 27th Virginia Infantry, a regiment in the famous Stonewall Brigade of the Confederate Army. The Stonewall Brigade received their name from their legendary commander, General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The 27th Virginia fought in many of the major campaigns and battles of the Civil War, including First Manassas, the 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the 1864 battles of the Wilderness. Edgar was wounded in the left shoulder at the Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, on May 12, 1864, and was made a prisoner of war. He was sent to Fort Delaware until he became part of a group that would be known as The Immortal 600. This group of Confederate officers were taken to Morris Island, South Carolina, at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, and exposed to enemy artillery fire for 45 days in an attempt to silence the Confederate gunners manning Fort Sumter. This was in retaliation for the Confederate Army imprisoning 50 Union Army officers and using them as human shields against federal artillery in the city of Charleston, in an attempt to stop Union artillery from firing upon the city. Edgar was finally released on June 16, 1865.

In June, 1875, he married Lydia McNeel, daughter of Col. Paul McNeel, whom he had met while a student at the old Lewisburg Academy. They settled at Hillsboro in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, where he was a farmer and stockman. Captain Edgar died in Pocahontas County on October 8, 1913, and is buried in the McNeel Cemetery.

Later in life, he wrote his reminiscences of the war. This work presents those memoirs with only minimal editing. It is the compelling personal account of a young Confederate soldier describing his dramatic experience in the Civil War and its impact on his life, family, and community.

The Call of the Mountains is a collection of the author’s adventures and encounters with people, fauna, culture and ideas as they persist amongst the rough and at times hostile mountainous terrains of the Indian Himalayas.
“…Amongst the rolling forested hills plying the terrain over the many ridges and ravines one could run into sambhar, kakar, wild pigs, and even now, sometimes a stray leopard or two. I had plenty of time at hand, no schedule to keep in the world, and my mind had spiralled down to a quiet, to a stillness, to a sort of singularity with being; when all of a sudden, inexplicable and without any perceptible sensory input that I can recall being aware of, I got a very strong feeling that something was watching me, and that I was not alone...”
‘Snake’
“…Amongst the clump of trees that lay at the base of the hill, crouching low, almost on its belly, and with its right paw extended but airborne in line with its whiskered cheeks, was a spotted leopard. It stood in that bent-down position, its shoulder bones sticking out, neck extended, and its head inches above the ground; its left hind leg was extended behind it, and its right paw was frozen in mid-air. Absolutely still in that position, it was staring intently at a spot I could not see...”
‘A Leopard on the Prowl’

The Call of the Mountains
Close your eyes and in your mind
If you can feel the cold chill of morning dew
If you can hear the rush of water and smell the pines
Then it is calling out to you too

“Charming, entertaining & intelligent - A full bodied Mountain Wine!”
- The Himalayan Commission

|

In "Some Personal Reminiscences of Service in the Cavalry of the Army of the Potomac," Hampton Sidney Thomas offers an evocative first-hand account of his experiences in the American Civil War. The narrative is rich with vivid descriptions and personal anecdotes that illuminate the emotional and physical trials faced by cavalry soldiers. Thomas's literary style is imbued with a sense of immediacy, using a blend of reflective prose and detailed observation that captures both the chaos of battle and the camaraderie amongst soldiers. This work sits in a unique literary context, blending elements of memoir, historical documentation, and soldier'??s narrative that contribute to a deeper understanding of the Civil War period, particularly in its portrayal of the often-overlooked cavalry operations within the Army of the Potomac. Hampton Sidney Thomas, born into a military family, was profoundly shaped by the turbulent times of the 1860s. His own service in the cavalry provided him a fusion of introspection and reportage, lending authenticity to his recollections. His commitment to documenting the war was perhaps fueled not only by personal honor but also by a desire to preserve the legacy of those who fought alongside him'??a generation marked by bravery, loss, and profound change. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in American history, military studies, or personal narratives of the Civil War. Thomas's engaging storytelling and heartfelt reflection make this work not just a historical document, but also a poignant testament to the spirit of those who served. It invites readers to immerse themselves deeply in the past, fostering a greater appreciation for the sacrifices of the young men who fought in this pivotal conflict.

A Vagabond's Odyssey: Being Further Reminiscences of a Wandering Sailor-troubadour in Many Lands【電子書籍】[ Arnold Safroni-Middleton ]

|

IN those old days of my youth an atmosphere of romance gathered from old novels and dreams still sparkled in my head. I am going to tell of the adventures that followed directly on my boyhood, when before the mast I had crossed the seas with eyes athirst for romance, looking for the wonderful, the beautiful in distant lands, in men and in women, and for that opportunity to perform those mighty, world-thrilling deeds that, alas, I have not even yet performed! After much wandering in search of wealth and fame, following desperate trouble owing to schemes that failed in Australia and the South Sea Islands, I at length caught typhoid fever in San Francisco. With many misgivings I recovered. At last I found myself sitting in a top attic in North America. It was a humble little room, the atmosphere and surroundings the very thing to feed the fire of my aspiring mind, to force one to do better. Its one window-pane was broken; the furniture consisted of an old table, a box chair, a candlestick and my extemporised bed on the floor! I was in Boston, “the Hub of the Universe”! My sea-chest and best suit were in pawn in San Francisco. My money had almost all gone, and my latest grand passion had faded. I had been practising the violin furiously day and night, for I hoped to become the world’s greatest violinist. Yet at heart I still felt triumphant. The world seemed especially mine! One thing only existence lackedーa kindred spirit to stand shoulder to shoulder by my side on some quest for glorious violence, adventurous thrills, voyaging across the uncharted seas of imagination. O too brief, splendid madness of youth! Far below, outside my window, over the city’s stone-slabbed streets, rattled vehicles, and the hurried, endless battalions of Yankee citizens passed by, seeking fortune or the grave. Gold seemed the incentive to all thrills; human passion, hope and ambition seemed congealed into a mechanical state of steam, electric locomotion, and all that the almighty silver dollars would clink against. I also seemed to have frozen and become a part of the machine which is called civilisation. The songs of sails aloft, the noise of forest winds and soundings across deep waters, had faded from my dreams into a wail of selfishness. Imagination is the soul of the Universe, and grief is its Bible; but, alas, I felt a gross craving for food. So my ambition to outrival Paganini on the violin had subsided from its state of enthusiastic fire and had left in my heart a dull callousness. One intense wish survived: to get a sound pair of boots and a new suit! Winter snows were only just melting, and much privation had considerably thinned me. I had done many things which I feel remain best untold. Necessity had inspired me with many original and desperate schemes, the latest of which was a determination to compose songs. Music hall hits come, have their day, are whistled and sung by the ?lite and by the street-arab, and suddenly I thought, why should not I supply the public with those rotten melodies? I would do it on original lines and give the American public something new. Did they not hail as brand-new old melodies that Wellington’s soldiers sung at Waterloo and antiquated strains brought over by the passengers of the Mayflower with one bar reversed and the title altered. I would jump from my bed at night and, throwing off my “blanket,” which consisted of half-a-dozen old overcoats which my landlady had lent me, write down inspired strains and next day put them to suitable words, words with those sentimental and lascivious suggestions in them that suit the public tasteーfor the artist in me had sorrowed and become temporarily gross. I sought money more than the applause of musical critics.

Inasmuch as the government of this country cannot grant any title to nobility, nor can it be conferred by any foreign power, the people of the United States have, to gratify a natural pride, been obliged to obtain distinction in various ways. Among them may be mentioned the accumulation of money, political preferment, the pride of ancestry, and professional attainments. The pride of ancestry is a very laudable one, and no doubt it has a guiding influence in shaping the destiny of our lives. We discover it in the honor felt by the members of such societies as those of the Colonial wars, the Cincinnati, Sons of the Revolution, Aztec Club, Sons of Veterans, and many others. And it is true: "Those will not look forward to their posterity who never look backward to their ancestors." Of the countless millions of human beings who in successive generations have passed over the stage of life, most of them, on their exit, have sunk into oblivion. The names of twenty-seven are all that are known of the human family from man's creation down to the days of Noah. From the deluge to the present time a few men of great genius as poets, historians, warriors, conquerors, and criminals claimgeneral recognition from mankind. All others are relegated or consigned to the special history of a people, and thereby rescued from an otherwise oblivion. As individuals they perish. I am quite sure we are more indebted to Boswell for a true insight into the life and character of Samuel Johnson than we are to his writings, and there is the utmost interest attached to the home life of all the world's great actors. Even as late as our revolutionary war we find much interest in the part played by the fashionable ladies during the war, and gossip of the Wistar parties, and card parties of New York and Philadelphia. From the "Mischianza" we have a clear insight to the true and gentle character of Major Andr? and his accomplishments; and the beauty of some of the Quaker City belles. Now in consideration of the desire of every gentleman to have a knowledge of his ancestry, and some knowledge of the times in which they lived, I purpose for the benefit of my children to write down somewhat of things I have seen and a part of which I was, and to make mention of some of the famous men with whom I have been acquainted during the eventful years between 1839 and the present time (1895). As I was an officer in the United States army from 1843 to 1856, and a major general in the Confederate army, I purpose to relate some of the events of the Mexican and Confederate wars in the course of this narrative.
