In "Shadow and Light," Mifflin Wistar Gibbs explores the intricate interplay between race, identity, and societal transformation in 19th-century America. The narrative is rendered with vivid imagery and a lyrical prose style that bridges memoir and historical fiction, capturing the complexities of the African American experience during a period fraught with both enlightenment and oppression. Gibbs' nuanced portrayal of characters reflects deep psychological insights and the broader socio-political context, allowing readers to engage with themes of resilience, social justice, and the quest for equality. Mifflin Wistar Gibbs, a prominent figure in the African American community, drew upon his experiences as an attorney, politician, and business leader to illuminate the struggles and triumphs of his contemporaries in this seminal work. His own journey from a slave in South Carolina to a respected figure in Oregon serves as both a backdrop and a catalyst for his exploration of systemic racism and the longing for personal and communal liberation. Gibbs' rich personal history deeply informs the narrative, allowing him to lend powerful authenticity to his characters' voices. I wholeheartedly recommend "Shadow and Light" to readers interested in American history, African American literature, and the dynamics of race relations.
A prominent British surgeon of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, Treves is now perhaps best known for his close friendship with Joseph Merrick, "the Elephant Man" at the London hospital where he worked and where Merrick lived until the end of his life age 27.

The story of Merrick's (the Elephant Man's) life published here is the source of most of what is known about the man, and forms the basis of the films, television adaptations and plays that followed. However, the story about Merrick is only one of many of Doctor Treves' reminiscences, each of them absorbing and fascinating. The Military Sketch-Book: Reminiscences of Seventeen Years in the Service Abroad and at Home (Complete)【電子書籍】[ William Maginn ]

|

I was just turned of nineteen, a well grown and somewhat precocious lad, generally considered by my father and his friends as a shrewd and well-disposed fellow, who was likely one day or other to cut a figure in the army; but, by my mother and her female c?terie, (all above the middle age,) I was set down, nem. con., as an arch wild dog, on whom a little military discipline would be by no means thrown away; for I was a second son, and my mother, although affectionate enough, did not evince towards me that strengthーor, more properly speaking, that weaknessーof maternal fondness which she lavished on my elder brother, (her favourite,) who was specially designed for the pulpit by her and her devout advisers. My own opinion of my disposition was about half-way between that of my father and mother. I never, to my knowledge, did much harm, except occasionally hoaxing our parson and apothecary; or operating a few nocturnal exchanges of signs1 between barbers, pawnbrokers, inn-keepers, and undertakers; or perhaps an occasional shot at a villager's cat. But the best cannot please every body; and even in the case of their own fathers and mothers, young fellows experience different opinions upon their merits. However, this I knewーthat I pleased myself: I was backed by an indulgent father, health, spirits, and plenty of money; so, in military phrase, I may say that I was ready primed for mischief, and did not care a doit for the devil. When I had finished my bottle, and tolerably satisfied myself with repeating over and over the terms of my appointment, in a semi-audible tone, I sallied forth. It was a fine evening in the beginning of July 1809, and town was crammed with military men in mufti. They had, as it seemed to me, even in plain clothes, an air peculiarly striking; and it excited at once my delight and envy to see them stared at by all; but particularly by the ladies, whose glances, to me, from my earliest age, were always bewitching in the extreme. I burned to mingle in the glory, and to share with my now brother-officers, the smiles of the fair; but my sun-burned drab coat, with broad buttons, together with my slouched hat, white Windsor-cord breeches and top-boots, presented an odious barrier to my hopes and desires.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Eighty years and more reminiscences 1815-1897【電子書籍】[ Elizabeth Cady Stanton ]
楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア
|

This vivid autobiography by one of the leaders in the fight for woman suffrage is a stirring depiction of the early struggles of American women toward equality. The new introduction and afterword written for the revised edition interpret Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s positions and strategies for today’s readers, detail the significance of the autobiography and situate it within the body of Stanton’s writings and activities, bring current scholarship to the appraisal of her importance, and reflect on the last part of her life. Elizabeth Cady Stanton writes about her life from childhood into her eighties. She recalls the discontent that led her to launch the woman suffrage movement at Seneca Falls in 1848 and the frustration of still having no voice in her own government after a half century of hard work. In lively and opinionated prose, Stanton conveys all the passion that made her a guiding force in the women’s movement. She provides an affectionate picture of her friend and political partner, Susan B. Anthony, and other leaders in the abolitionist and woman suffrage movements. She describes the immeasurable pleasure of winning converts to her cause and the satisfaction of silencing opponents through the force of her argument. Sometimes humorous, sometimes touching, filled with resolve throughout, Eighty Years and More is a compelling portrait of this remarkable leader.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

|

Edward Stevenson's "Reminiscences of Joseph, the Prophet, and the Coming Forth of the Book of Mormon" offers a compelling first-person account that intertwines personal narratives with historical commentary. The book adopts a reflective literary style, revealing not just the emergence of the Book of Mormon but also the profound impact of Joseph Smith's prophetic mission on early Latter-day Saints. Stevenson meticulously integrates testimonies and events, contributing to the broader discourse on early Mormon history, while also capturing the emotional landscape of a faith in its formative years. As a contemporary of Joseph Smith, Edward Stevenson was deeply entrenched in the events that shaped early Mormonism. His close association with Smith, along with his own spiritual journey, lends authenticity and urgency to his recollections. Stevenson's role as a historian and chronicler was fueled by a strong desire to preserve the faith's origins, driven by the collective memories of those who witnessed the miraculous occurrences surrounding the Book of Mormon's translation. This volume is an invaluable resource for historians, scholars, and members of the faith, as it provides a rare glimpse into the life of one of early America's most enigmatic figures. Stevenson's insights not only illuminate the spiritual fervor of the time but also invite readers to reflect on the complexities of faith amidst cultural upheaval. For anyone seeking a richer understanding of early Mormonism, this book is an indispensable addition to their library.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。
