Set against the backdrop of the Enlightenment, the work explores themes of solitude, self-discovery, and the relationship between humanity and nature, effectively positioning Rousseau's musings within a broader discourse on individualism and existential inquiry. The Autobiography of Philosophy Rousseau's the Reveries of the Solitary Walker【電子書籍】[ Michael Davis ]

This is the most important book about the nature of philosophy and of the human soul published this year. In making the condition for its own possibility its deepest concern, philosophy is necessarily about itself_it is autobiographical. The first part of The Autobiography of Philosophy interprets Heidegger's Being and Time, Nietzsche's On the Genealogy of Morals, Aristotle's Metaphysics, and Plato's Lysis as examples of the implicitly autobiographical character of philosophy. The second part is a reading of Rousseau's The Reveries of the Solitary Walker. Although Rousseau's explicitly autobiographical writings are more often read for the tantalizing details of his rather eccentric life than for their philosophical import, this work is an artful use of Rousseau's exile and isolation_'the strangest position in which a mortal could ever find himself'_as a paradigm for the human soul in its relation to the world. In powerfully articulating the activity that is at the core of all philosophy, The Reveries articulates the nature of the human soul for which this activity is the defining possibility.

Elaborate Selves Reflections and Reveries of Christopher Bollas, Michael Eigen, Polly Young-Eisendrath, Samuel and Ev【電子書籍】[ E Mark Stern ]

In this fascinating volume, Anthony Molino interviews some of today’s foremost thinkers in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Organized around the fertile and controversial concept of multiplicity, Elaborate Selves explores the life work and thought of a diverse group of therapists who have played key roles in furthering postmodern perspectives on self experience. Through five engaging conversations, readers discover how discontinuities in self experience reflect phenomena that are both fundamental to formations of human identity and central to an understanding of contemporary relationships. Throughout the strands of these interviews, theory and practice come alive in a multivocal exploration at the intersections of culture and history, ideology and instinct, biology and fantasy, nostalgia and hope, and, ultimately, of trauma and treatment.Elaborate Selves explores the postmodern concern with the notion of a “multiple” or “fragmented” self. In this context, the stories, lives, and “selves” of the very therapists interviewed are seen to reflect predicaments and tensions of the culture at-large. Each interview explores a therapist’s unique contribution to the field while making connections between efforts and theories that at a first glance appear remarkably diverse. Among these are: the constructivism of Jungian Buddhist and feminist Polly Young-Eisendrath; the inspired object-relations theorizing of Christopher Bollas; and the mystic sensibilities of Michael Eigen. Readers will find that the depth and complexities of the following issues are rendered in a language that is at once both compelling and accessible:

contemporary theories of the “self” and implications for clinical practice

psychoanalysis and postmodernism

psychoanalysis and spirituality

myth and ritual as a basis for self-knowledge and group psychotherapyA fundamental text for clinicians and students of all schools of psychoanalysis, contemporary social theory, philosophy and religious thought, Elaborate Selves is a major contribution to the ever-growing genre of the interview. Indeed, the interviews collected in this unique volume offer more than an exciting exploration of a singular group of life experiences. They probe beyond the biographical to illustrate connections between personal and intellectual history and between life experience, culture, and the production of knowledge in an increasingly complex world.

In any case, because one can always close a book, my friend need not be bored.
I have changed nothing to my knowledge, and yet it must be that I have changed many things without my knowledge, for I am writing after so many years, and have consulted neither friend nor letter nor old newspaper and describe what comes oftenest into my memory.
I say this fearing that some surviving friend of my youth may remember something in a different shape and be offended with my book.

Reveries of the Solitary Walker【電子書籍】[ Jean-Jacques Rousseau ]

'These hours of solitude and meditation are the only time of the day when I am completely myself' Reveries of the Solitary Walker is Rousseau's last great work, the product of his final years of exile from the society that condemned his political and religious views. Returning to Paris the philosopher determines to keep a faithful record of the thoughts and ideas that come to him on his perambulations. Part reminiscence, part reflection, enlivened by anecdote and encounters, the Reveries form a kind of sequel to his Confessions, but they are more introspective and less defensive: Rousseau finds happiness in solitude, walks in nature, botanizing, and meditation. Writing an account of his walks becomes a means of achieving self-knowledge and safeguarding for himself the pleasure that others, he is convinced, seek to deny him. The Reveries, shaped by the unmediated nature of Rousseau's thought processes, give powerfully lyrical expression to a painfully tortured soul in search of peace. This new translation is accompanied by an introduction and notes that explore the nature of the work and its historical, literary, and intellectual contexts. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Reveries An Unfettered Mind【電子書籍】[ Antonino Ferro ]

Reverie is a form of dreaming intended as a continuous process that takes place in sleep as well as in waking life. In analysis, the patient's communications can evoke images that will then be useful in the development of the analytic work. The salient feature of analytic listening is precisely this willingness to abandon oneself to reverie where previously unthought or unthinkable emotions are given the right to exist and circulate freely. In Reveries: An Unfettered Mind, Antonino Ferro, whose numerous clinical books have been translated into many languages, elaborates the reveries and daydreams that accompany him out of the consulting room. The result is a collection of short or not-so-short musings with surreal or even grotesque tones, and at times mocking and pointed aphorisms: vibrant pages with a life of their own, punctuated by subtle literary references to the likes of Rousseau, Baudelaire, Kafka, and Poe.

It includes the 18 poem sequence Poems 1912-13 on the death of Hardy's wife Emma - extended to the now-classic 21 poems in Collected Poems of 1919 - widely regarded to comprise the best work of his poetic career. The collection's title was picked by the publisher, and disapproved of by Hardy, emphasising as it did the 15 light-hearted satires and sketches of 1910, at the expense of the Poems of 1912-13 themselves, as well as of the 39 Miscellaneous Lyrics and the 34 Lyrics and Reveries, all with their more serious side.[2] These latter include such fine examples of philosophical meditation and contemporary observation as 'Wessex Heights' and 'Channel Firing'.

Reveries on the Art of War【電子書籍】[ Maurice de Saxe ]

At the age of twelve, Dresden-born Maurice de Saxe (1696?1750) entered the Saxon army, beginning a long and successful military career that culminated in his promotion to Marshal of France, where he retained full command of the main army in Flanders directly under Louis XV. Again and again, de Saxe achieved enormous victories over his enemies, becoming one of the greatest military leaders of the eighteenth century. Combining his memoirs and general observations with brilliant military thinking, Reveries on the Art of War was written in a mere thirteen days. Introducing revolutionary approaches to battles and campaigning at a time of changing military tactics and leadership styles, it stands as a classic of early modern military theory.
De Saxe's Reveries offered numerous procedural innovations for raising and training troops. His descriptions for establishing field camps were soon standard procedure. His ideas advanced weapon technology, including the invention of a gun specially designed for infantrymen and the acceptance of breech-loading muskets and cannons. De Saxe heightened existing battle formations by introducing a specific attack column that required less training, and he rediscovered a military practice lost since the ancient Romans ー the art of marching in cadence. He even delved into the minds and emotions of soldiers on the battlefield, obtaining a deeper understanding of their daily motivations.
Written by a military officer of great acumen, Reveries on the Art of War has deeply impacted modern military tactics. Enduringly relevant, this landmark work belongs in the library of anyone interested in the history, tactics, and weapons of European warfare.

Pangle argues that this aesthetic appreciation necessitates an in-depth interpretation of the writing's complex and multileveled intended teaching about the normatively best way of lifeーand how essential this is for a work that was initially bewildering.

Rousseau stands out among modern political philosophers in that he restored, to political philosophy, what Socrates and his students (from Plato and Xenophon through Aristotle and the Stoics and Cicero) had made centralーand that the previous modern, Enlightenment philosophers had eclipsed: the study of the life and soul of the exemplary, independent sage, as possessor of "human wisdom." Rousseau made this again the supreme theme and source of norms for political philosophy and for humanity's moral as well as civic existence.

In his analysis of The Reveries, Pangle uncovers Rousseau's most profound exploration and articulation of his own life, personality, soul, and thought as "the man of nature enlightened by reason." He describes, in Rousseau's final work, the fullest embodiment of the experiential wisdom from which flows and to which points Rousseau's political and moral philosophy, his theology, and his musical and literary art.

Reveries of A Solitary Walker【電子書籍】[ Jean-Jacques Rousseau ]

Reveries of a Solitary Walker was first published in 1782, four years after the author’s death. The work was discovered in his notebooks, with only the final section of the work left unfinished. Rousseau composed the text between the autumn of 1776 and the spring of 1778; he was still working on it less than two months before his death. After a little over a year in England, during which his friendship with David Hume came to an abrupt and acrimonious end , Rousseau returned to France in the spring of 1767 where he was given refuge by a series of noblemen, including the Prince of Conti, who offered him shelter at his Chateau de Trie. Rousseau would spend the rest of his life moving between Lyon ー where he performed his poem Pygmalion to great acclaim ー and Paris, where he supported himself copying music and enjoying the French countryside, where he worked on his most famous autobiographical book, Confessions.
