Jerusalem The Biography【電子書籍】[ Simon Sebag Montefiore ]

**FULLY REVISED AND UPDATED FOR 2024

NATIONAL BESTSELLER ? A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK ? JEWISH BOOK COUNCIL BOOK OF THE YEAR

"Spectacular. [Montefiore] really tells you what the life of the city has been like and why it means so much. You fall in love with the city. It’s a treasure. It’s a wonderful book." ーBill Clinton

"Impossible to put down. . . . Vastly enjoyable." ーThe New York Times Book Review**

The history of Jerusalem is the story of the world: Jerusalem is the universal city, the capital of two peoples, the shrine of three faiths. The Holy City and Holy Land are the battlefields for today’s multifaceted conflicts and, for believers, the setting for Judgment Day and the Apocalypse. How did this small, remote town become the Holy City, the “center of the world” and now the key to peace in the Middle East? Why is the Holy Land so important not just to the region and its many new players, but to the wider world too? Drawing on new archives and a lifetime’s study, Montefiore reveals this ever-changing city and turbulent region through the wars, love affairs and revelations of the kings, empresses, amirs, sultans, caliphs, presidents, autocrats, imperialists and warlords, poets, prophets, saints and rabbis who created, destroyed, chronicled, and believed in Jerusalem and the Holy Land.

A classic of modern literature, this is not only the epic story of 3,000 years of faith, slaughter, fanaticism, co-existence, power and myth, but also a freshly updated, carefully balanced history of the Middle East, from King David to the new powers of the twenty-first century, from the birth of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam to the Israel-Palestine conflict. This is how today’s Middle East was forged, how the Holy Land became sacred and how Jerusalem became Jerusalemーthe only city that exists twiceーin heaven and on earth.

“Magnificent. . . . Montefiore barely misses a trick or a character intaking us through the city’s story with compelling, breathless tension.” ーThe Wall Street Journal

From Salem to Nashville OLD GLORY The Life and Times of Patriot Captain William Driver【電子書籍】[ Jack Benz ]
|

This story is about Captain William Driver as told by his Great-Great-grandson, Jack Benz, in collaboration with other writers and advisers. The text is strikingly enhanced by over 200 professionally crafted images and by an appendix of founding father documents. The resources substantially came from Benz’s collection of items up to 200 year’s old. Some episodes are in print for the first time. Captain Driver was born in Salem, MA in 1803 to puritan parents within a culture and heritage of seafarers. His homes were ports and vessels that sailed the vast oceans in the early 19th century. It is a true story of adventure, daring, high drama, heroism, patriotism, and incomparable public service on behalf of the helpless. Young William was gifted beyond his year’s as evidenced by his scholarliness in the Salem’s famed Hacker school, and at 14, his hiring on a trading vessel. This background immersed him in ventures around the world, seeking fame and fortune trading rare spices and other prized commodities. By 21, he captained ships that circled the world on odysseys that exposed him to numerous dangerous encounters at sea, including horrific storms and turbulence with waves over 50 feet high. Ashore, he confronted life-changing events in the lands of cannibals, giants, pirates, savages, and scantily clad island women. In a famous episode, he rescued families of survivors of the original mutineers on HMS ship Bounty and delivered them to their adopted home on Pitcairn Island. This venture was part and parcel in numerous movies, including one receiving an academy award for the best picture of the year and touted best nautical film of all times. Captain Driver retired young and wealthy and moved to Nashville, TN. with his third wife. Two others predeceased him, and the third is shocking. In this city on the rocks, he was an activist Union sympathizer generally shunned by the largely Confederate citizenry at a time Civil War was imminent. As a staunch abolitionist living where the city even owned slaves, he was a misfit. He and his home place often were vilified because of his views, crusty manner, and irritating practice of displaying Old Glory, his ship's legendary flag. The residents viewed him as a cantankerous rabble-rouser, always rocking the boat and supporting unpopular causes on behalf of the downtrodden, exploited, and uneducated-mainly Native Americans, Negroes, women, the sick and infirmed. He was their defender, friend, spokesman, and hero. Driver was active in civic affairs, once running for mayor and later holding several governmental offices. Among his significant civic achievements were helping facilitate the establishment of public education in Nashville, and as provost, regulating prostitution and disease control. The Captain routinely picked fights over issues with the churches, government, and establishments in general; even with some in his family members, their discord led to estrangement. His uniqueness is best described in his patriotism evidenced by his fierce defense, respect, and reverence for Old Glory. He had observed and experienced its influence around the worldーfeared, honored, and respected like no other country's flag. He proclaimed its majesty to be so profound it even waves to defend the rights of those whose actions and speech are cowardly despicable. As a bonus, the book offers ancillary educational information about world cultures, history, geography, navigation, philosophy, religion, and science. Preliminary reviews termed it as attractively presented, cleverly written, edifying, and intensely entertaining-a must-read!

Jerusalem The Capital Of Controversy【電子書籍】[ Louis Asare ]

During its long history, Jerusalem has been attacked 52 times, captured and recaptured 44 times, besieged 23 times, and destroyed twice. The oldest part of the city was settled in the 4th millennium BCE, making Jerusalem one of the oldest cities in the world.

Given the city's central position in both Israeli nationalism and Palestinian nationalism, the selectivity required to summarize more than 5,000 years of inhabited history is often influenced by ideological bias or background. These and many more you will find when you read through this book.

Jerusalem is the universal city, the capital of two peoples, the shrine of three faiths; it is the prize of empires, the site of Judgement Day and the battlefield of today's clash of civilizations. From King David to Barack Obama, from the birth of Judaism, Christianity and Islam to the Israel-Palestine conflict, this is the epic history of 3,000 years of faith, slaughter, fanaticism and coexistence.

How did this small, remote town become the Holy City, the 'centre of the world' and now the key to peace in the Middle East? In a gripping narrative, Louis Asare reveals this ever-changing city in its many incarnations, bringing every epoch and character blazingly to life. Jerusalem's biography is told through the wars, love affairs and revelations of the men and women - kings, empresses, prophets, poets, saints, conquerors and whores - who created, destroyed, chronicled and believed in Jerusalem.

Between Jabal ?Amil, Karbala and Jerusalem The Lebanese Shi‘a and the Struggle for Palestine【電子書籍】[ Gidon Windecker ]
|

This book tells the story of the Lebanese Shi’a and their development from a marginalized, discriminated minority to a highly politicized community that has given birth to Hezbollah, one of the most powerful paramilitary forces in the contemporary Middle East. It explores the Arab-Israeli conflict through the lens of Shi’a intellectuals and scholars from South Lebanon, and chronologically reflects on trending perceptions of Palestine, the Zionist movement, and the Jewish community in Lebanon.

The monograph illustrates how Zionism and the establishment of Israel played a decisive role in the intellectual revival of early Muslim perceptions of Jews. It demonstrates how political conflicts after 1948 have impacted the work of scholars such as Musa as-Sadr and Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah, and have triggered the formation of social and Islamist movements. It also shows how Hezbollah’s leaders have used religious sources and Western anti-Jewish narratives to construct a deep-rooted ideology to support their struggle for South Lebanon and Palestine. The combination of social needs, religious beliefs and political interests forms the core of the analysis. This text appeals to students and researchers working within the convergence of politics and Middle Eastern religions.

Queens of Jerusalem The Women Who Dared to Rule【電子書籍】[ Katherine Pangonis ]
|

In 1187 Saladin's armies besieged the holy city of Jerusalem. He had previously annihilated Jerusalem's army at the battle of Hattin, and behind the city's high walls a last-ditch defence was being led by an unlikely trio - including Sibylla, Queen of Jerusalem. They could not resist Saladin, but, if they were lucky, they could negotiate terms that would save the lives of the city's inhabitants.

Queen Sibylla was the last of a line of formidable female rulers in the Crusader States of Outremer. Yet for all the many books written about the Crusades, one aspect is conspicuously absent: the stories of women. Queens and princesses tend to be presented as passive transmitters of land and royal blood. In reality, women ruled, conducted diplomatic negotiations, made military decisions, forged alliances, rebelled, and undertook architectural projects. Sibylla's grandmother Queen Melisende was the first queen to seize real political agency in Jerusalem and rule in her own right. She outmanoeuvred both her husband and son to seize real power in her kingdom, and was a force to be reckoned with in the politics of the medieval Middle East. The lives of her Armenian mother, her three sisters, and their daughters and granddaughters were no less intriguing.

The lives of this trailblazing dynasty of royal women, and the crusading Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, are the focus of Katherine Pangonis's debut book. In QUEENS OF JERUSALEM she explores the role women played in the governing of the Middle East during periods of intense instability, and how they persevered to rule and seize greater power for themselves when the opportunity presented itself.

Past and present collide in this page-turning investigation into Salem's irrepressible question: how could this have happened?

In 1692, Martha Allen Carrier was hanged in the Salem witch trials as the "Queen of Hell." Three hundred years later, her nine-times-great-granddaughter, Alice Markham-Cantor, set out to discover why Martha had died. Jerusalem to Illyricum Earliest Christianity through the Eyes of Paul【電子書籍】[ Paul W. Barnett ]
|

Jerusalem to Illyricum is the geographical space and ca. AD 34 to 57 the time frame for Paul's church planting mission. Acts includes this within its meta-narrative, and while historically accurate, it is not raw history like Paul's letters. In this study Barnett is seeking references to Paul's initial missionary "arrival" (eisodos) and the local cultural pushback. Of particular interest for history and theology is his encyclical to the Galatians and his account of the dispute with Cephas in Antioch. Paul's success in his mission to the gentiles in Syria and Cilicia provoked the rise within the Jerusalem Church of those he calls "false brothers" whose colleagues travelled to "agitate" the Galatian believers and to drive the gentile believers in Antioch from the common meal. Some years later a band of preachers from Jerusalem sought to capture the church in Corinth, intending to then capture other churches in Macedonia and Asia. Paul's missions and writings have been the subject of numerous large studies which, however, unintentionally imply that Paul's mission years were longer than they were and that his mission writing occupied a lengthy time space. His nine missionary letters were written ca. AD 48 to 57, a mere decade, and all of which point to Paul's astonishing energy and drive.

Jerusalem the Golden【電子書籍】[ Herman Douglas ]
|

This wonderful little book addresses the symbolism of the ancient Jewish tabernacle and how it points to heaven. The "Tabernacle in the Wilderness" (as it was called) was the earthly, movable dwelling place of God where the Israelites worshipped after the Exodus.

Supported by Scripture, "Jerusalem the Golden" presents evidence that the holy tabernacle was indeed a shadow of things to come. Each chapter covers topics worthy of attention-from the Holy of Holies to the sacred vessels, brazen altar, golden candlestick, Ark of the Covenant, Mercy-Seat, and various aspects of the Tabernacle compound.

Readers of this book will find new insights into the symbolism of the rituals, the work of the high priests, the utensils, and every section of the temple. The commentary, references, and illustrations provide an inside view of the Tabernacle. As readers learn the symbolic meanings, their knowledge and understanding of the Tabernacle-and the plan of salvation it pointed to-will be greatly enhanced. The hope of the author was that, as readers learned the symbolic meanings woven into the Tabernacle and its services, they will reach a deeper understanding of how the ancient Biblical services are relevant to their lives today.

Note: The front matter of this book includes a lengthy prefix by a Miss Manning which goes into some detail about the dangers and poor working conditions faced by London's dock workers. This book, a series of sermons by Herman Douglas, was originally published as a fund raiser to help dock workers in need.

National Policy, Global Memory The Commemoration of the “Righteous” from Jerusalem to Paris, 1942-2007【電子書籍】[ Sarah Gensburger ]
|

Since 1963, the state of Israel has awarded the title of “Righteous among the Nations” to individuals who risked their lives sheltering Jews during the Holocaust. This distinction remained solely an Israeli initiative until the late 1990s, when European governments began developing their own national categories, the most prominent of which was the “Righteous of France,” honoring those who protected Jews during the Vichy regime. In National Policy, Global Memory, Sarah Gensburger uses this dramatic episode to lend a new perspective to debates over memory and nationhood. In particular, she works to combine two often divergent disciplinesーmemory studies and political scienceーto study “memory politics” as a form of public policy.

Exiled from Jerusalem The Diaries of Hussein Fakhri al-Khalidi【

The diaries of Dr Hussein Fakhri al-Khalidi offer a unique insight to the peculiarities of colonialism that have shaped Palestinian history. Elected mayor of Jerusalem ? his city of birth ? in 1935, the physician played a leading role in the Palestinian Rebellion of the next year, with profound consequences for the future of Palestinian resistance and British colonial rule. One of many Palestinian leaders deported as a result of the uprising, it was in British-imposed exile in the Seychelles Islands that al-Khalidi began his diaries.

Written with equal attention to lively personal encounters and ongoing political upheavals, entries in the diaries cover his sudden arrest and deportation by the colonial authorities, the fifteen months of exile on the tropical island, and his subsequent return to political activity in London then Beirut. The diaries provide a historical and personal lens into Palestinian political life in the late 1930s, a period critical to understanding the catastrophic 1948 exodus and dispossession of the Palestinian people.

With an introduction by Rashid Khalidi the publication of these diaries offers a wealth of primary material and a perspective on the struggle against colonialism that will be of great value to anyone interested in the Palestinian predicament, past and present.

Seizing Jerusalem The Architectures of Unilateral Unification【電子書籍】[ Alona Nitzan-Shiftan ]

|

After seizing Jerusalem’s eastern precincts from Jordan at the conclusion of the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel unilaterally unified the city and plunged into an ambitious building program, eager to transform the very meaning of one of the world’s most emotionally charged urban spaces. The goal was as simple as it was controversial: to both Judaize and modernize Jerusalem.

Seizing Jerusalem chronicles how numerous disciplines, including architecture, landscape design, and urban planning, as well as everyone from municipal politicians to state bureaucrats, from Israeli-born architects to international luminaries such as Louis Kahn, Buckminster Fuller, and Bruno Zevi, competed to create Jerusalem’s new image. This decade-long competition happened with the Palestinian residents still living in the city, even as the new image was inspired by the city’s Arab legacy. The politics of space in the Holy City, still contested today, were shaped in this post-1967 decade not only by the legacy of the war and the politics of dispossession, but curiously also by emerging trends in postwar architectural culture.

Drawing on previously unexamined archival documents and in-depth interviews with architects, planners, and politicians, Alona Nitzan-Shiftan analyzes the cultural politics of the Israeli state and, in particular, of Jerusalem’s influential mayor, Teddy Kollek, whose efforts to legitimate Israeli rule over Jerusalem provided architects a unique, real-world laboratory to explore the possibilities and limits of modernist designーas built form as well as political and social action. Seizing Jerusalem reveals architecture as an active agent in the formation of urban and national identity, and demonstrates how contemporary debates about Zionism, and the crisis within the discipline of architecture over postwar modernism, affected Jerusalem’s built environment in ways that continue to resonate today.

From Jerusalem to the Lion of Judah and Beyond Israel’S Foreign Policy in East Africa【電子書籍】[ Steven Carol ]

From Jerusalem to the Lion of Judah and Beyond provides the most thorough analysis of Israels foreign policy towards East Africa. Since its modern reestablishment, Israel has sought political allies in the international community. To achieve that goal, Israel offers technological, economic and military assistance to developing nations. Historically, four East African countriesEthiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania were prime beneficiaries of that effort. Later, these efforts were extended to Eritrea and South Sudan. Israel has been demonstrating its willingness to off er a far greater share of its limited resources to international assistance, than practically any other nation, large or small. Since 1948, Israels foreign policy towards East Africa exemplifies these immortal words: I will also give thee [Israel] for a light to the nations, that My salvation may be unto the end of the earth. Isaiah 49:6.

The chronicles of these laudable activities are little known, even to post World War II historians. No other book to date covers this subject in as much depth. Anyone seeking a more profound understanding of Israels foreign policy, as well as its historic relationship with East Africa, will find From Jerusalem to the Lion of Judah and Beyond of interest.

|

As she chased her ancestor through the archives, graveyards, and haunted places of New England, grappling with what we owe the past, Alice discovered a shocking truth: witch hunts didn't end in Salem.

Extensively researched and told through alternating fiction and non-fiction chapters, The Once & Future Witch Hunt does not treat Salem as a cautionary tale. It treats Salem as an instruction manualーnot on how to perform witch hunts, but how to stop them.

Foreword by Rebecca Traister, New York Times bestselling author.

Afterword by Silvia Federici, author of Caliban and the Witch.

America's Road to Jerusalem The Impact of the Six-Day War on Protestant Politics【電子書籍】[ Jason M. Olson ]
|

This study examines the role of the Six-Day War in American Protestant politics and culture. The author argues that American foreign policy towards the Arab-Israeli conflict, culminating in the Trump Administration’s 2017 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and the domestic Evangelical communities who supported it, has a direct correlation with the long-term consequences of the 1967 Six-Day War.

For most of America’s history, biblical literalists, or Evangelicals, dominated the religious culture of the country. But, in 1925, the Scopes trial on science, evolution, and religion embarrassed Evangelicals and caused them to retreat from American culture and politics. Modern and liberal Protestants won dominance and established control in nearly all of the Mainline seminaries, publishing houses, and denominations, leading to the creation of the National Council of Churches by 1950.

This book argues that the Six-Day War reversed that power structure in American religion, with Evangelicals returning to a place of prominence in American culture and politics. Whereas the Scopes trial showed much of American Protestantism that the Modernists had the right understanding of the Bible; the Six-Day War demonstrated that, ironically, Evangelicals may have had it right all along. They used this historic leverage to vaunt themselves into the highest planes of American life, with Billy Graham becoming “America’s Pastor.”

In this historic process, the 1967 war between Israel and the surrounding Arab states clarified the way those different branches of American Protestantism thought about the Arab-Israeli conflict, particularly the issue of Jerusalem. Indeed, the nature of the Six-Day War was deep and appeared to be of Biblical proportions.

Because Israel gained territories in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the ancient Biblical heartlands formerly held by Jordan; historical, messianic, and even apocalyptic intrusions entered the various branches of American Protestantism. In some branches, supersessionism, a belief that the Church had replaced the Jewish people as God’s chosen, was stoked. In other branches, supersessionism was rejected and the nature of Judaism and its connection to the Holy Land was re-evaluated. The important point is that the territories that Israel captured had thick theological meaning, and this would force all branches of American Protestantism to reconsider their assumptions about Judaism and Zionism, as well as Islam and Palestinian nationalism.

Evangelicalism.

Six Women of Salem The Untold Story of the Accused and Their Accusers in the Salem Witch Trials【電子書籍】[ Marilynne K. Roach ]

|

"[Full of] the author's deep knowledge of virtually every man, woman and child affected by the trials in this bizarre period." ー Kirkus Reviews
The story of the Salem Witch Trials told through the lives of six women
Six Women of Salem is the first work to use the lives of a select number of representative women as a microcosm to illuminate the larger crisis of the Salem witch trials. By the end of the trials, beyond the twenty who were executed and the five who perished in prison, 207 individuals had been accused, 74 had been "afflicted," 32 had officially accused their fellow neighbors, and 255 ordinary people had been inexorably drawn into that ruinous and murderous vortex, and this doesn't include the religious, judicial, and governmental leaders. All this adds up to what the Rev. Cotton Mather called "a desolation of names."
The individuals involved are too often reduced to stock characters and stereotypes when accuracy is sacrificed to indignation. By examining the lives of six specific women, Marilynne Roach shows readers what it was like to be present throughout this horrific time and how it was impossible to live through it unchanged.
"This style of narrative provides an intimacy with the Salem people. . . . yet readers still reap the benefits of Roach's thorough researched and expertise on the subject." ー Publishers Weekly
