A Death in Jerusalem The Assassination by Jewish Extremists of the First Arab/Israeli【電子書籍】[ Kati Marton ]

On the evening of September 17, 1948, a car carrying Count Folke Bernadotte, the first United Nations?appointed mediator in the Middle East, traveled up a narrow Jerusalem street. As the car shifted gears for the climb toward the New City, an Israeli Army jeep nosed into the road, forcing Bernadotte’s car and the two following him to come to a full stop. From the jeep sprang three uniformed men clutching automatic weapons. In a moment that set the stage for a legacy of violence that has since characterized Arab-Israeli negotiations, Count Bernadotte was shot six times and killed. The assassins were never brought to justice.

A Death in Jerusalem reveals the forces behind this assassination, the passion that first dictated the tactics of terrorism in Israel and that continue to shape the thinking and actions of those even now determined to block accommodation with the Palestinians.

At its birth in 1948, the State of Israel was endangered as much by a fratricidal war between Jewish moderates and extremists as it was by the invading armies of its Arab neighbors. In the first test of its authority, the fledgling United Nations forged a temporary truce between Arabs and Jews and dispatched Count Bernadotte to negotiate a permanent peace. A Swede with a reputation for skillful negotiations with the Nazis for the release of prisoners, including Jewish concentration-camp victims, Bernadotte had seemed the ideal choice for mediator. But he was dangerously unversed in the Israeli underground’s passionate visions of a homeland restored to its biblical geographical proportions.

To the Stern Gang, led by future Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, any concession of land was as threatening to Israel’s integrity as the Arabs’ invading armies. And the Sternists did not trust Count Bernadotte, whom they saw as threatening Israel’s claim to the holy city of Jerusalem. As Bernadotte prepared his plan for the allocation of disputed territory, the Stern Gang plotted his murder.

Drawing on previously untapped sources, including Bernadotte’s family and former Stern Gang members, Kati Marton tells the vivid and haunting story of what propelled the Sternists, how they achieved their goal, and how and why the assassins were shielded from prosecution.

Jesus of Nazareth Holy Week: From the Entrance Into Jerusalem To The Resurrection【電子書籍】[ Pope Benedict XVI ]

For Christians, Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, who died for the sins of the world, and who rose from the dead in triumph over sin and death. For non-Christians, he is almost anything else--a myth, a political revolutionary, a prophet whose teaching was misunderstood or distorted by his followers.

Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, and no myth, revolutionary, or misunderstood prophet, insists Benedict XVI. He thinks that the best of historical scholarship, while it can't "prove" Jesus is the Son of God, certainly doesn't disprove it. Indeed, Benedict maintains that the evidence, fairly considered, brings us face-to-face with the challenge of Jesus--a real man who taught and acted in ways that were tantamount to claims of divine authority, claims not easily dismissed as lunacy or deception.

Benedict XVI presents this challenge in his new book, Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection, the sequel volume to Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration.

Why was Jesus rejected by the religious leaders of his day? Who was responsible for his death? Did he establish a Church to carry on his work? How did Jesus view his suffering and death? How should we? And, most importantly, did Jesus really rise from the dead and what does his resurrection mean? The story of Jesus raises many crucial questions.

Benedict brings to his study the vast learning of a brilliant scholar, the passionate searching of a great mind, and the deep compassion of a pastor's heart. In the end, he dares readers to grapple with the meaning of Jesus' life, teaching, death, and resurrection.

"Only in this second volume do we encounter the decisive sayings and events of Jesus' life . . . I hope that I have been granted an insight into the figure of Our Lord that can be helpful to all readers who seek to encounter Jesus and to believe in Him."
-Pope Benedict XVI

Frankish Jerusalem The Transformation of a Medieval City in the Latin East【電子書籍】[ Anna Gutgarts ]

Focusing on Jerusalem under Frankish rule following the Crusader conquest of 1099, this book sheds light on the dynamic socio-economic factors that shaped Jerusalem's gradual urban transformation. In exploring the extensive corpus of medieval property records, it reveals that the growth of Jerusalem's monumental and symbolic landscape, as befitted its new status as the capital of the Latin Kingdom, was in tandem with more mundane facets of life in the city, such as growing residential settlement patterns, and the expansion of its rural hinterland. This places the history of Frankish Jerusalem in a broader theoretical framework by analyzing the socio-economic and institutional mechanisms ? such as immigration and the formation of medieval trust ? that shaped the cityscape during a particularly tumultuous period in its history, and places it against the backdrop of medieval urbanisation processes in other regions.

Baptism in the Name of Jesus (Acts 2:38) from Jerusalem to Great Britain【電子書籍】[ Kulwant Singh Boora ]

British Christianity is embedded with a deep sense history that once discovered, will start to reveal an apostolic linage traceable to the Book of Acts. With the rise of British Christianity in various parts of ancient Britain, it played a fundamental, yet pivotal role in maintaining and shaping the baptismal practice of single immersion in the name of Christ alone. At least from the time of Tertullian of Carthage as testified by the Church Historian, Eusebius of Caesarea to the acclaimed British born and first Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine who oversaw and officiated the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D, the entrance of Christianity into Britain was seen to resist Roman and Papal authority and jurisdiction, thereby minimizing any Roman influence and dominance, resulting in the excommunication of the British Church. The British Church with is religious practices became a thorn in the side of the Roman Church, but continued to exercise its religious freedoms in accordance with the apostolic message. Therefore, contained within this work is reference to an array of literature, publications and prominent figures who noted baptism in the name of Jesus only or Christ alone from within Britain since the ancient period till the present. Great Britain has been home to baptism in the name of Jesus only for centuries and hundreds of years, coupled with theological belief of the British and European people of sabellianism derivative from the New Testament with an Old Testament foundation.

Jewish Piety in Islamic Jerusalem The Lamentations Commentary of Salmon ben Yeruhim【電子書籍】[ Jessica Andruss ]

The emergence of the Jewish Bible commentary in the tenth century marks a turning point in Jewish intellectual history, namely, the transition from ancient rabbinic culture to the Arabized Judaism of the medieval period. This book explores a formative moment in this cultural reorientation by analyzing one of the earliest Jewish Bible commentaries. Written in Arabic in tenth-century Jerusalem, Salmon ben Yeruhim's commentary on Lamentations reveals a nuanced negotiation between the rabbinic tradition and the intellectual resources of the Islamic world. Salmon was a prominent figure among the Karaites, a Jewish movement defined by its commitments to biblical scholarship and penitential practices. For him, Lamentations is "instruction for Israel"--spiritual guidance for the Jewish community in exile--and his task is to communicate that instruction. Jewish Piety in Islamic Jerusalem explores the medieval Arabic dimensions of Salmon's project, tracing his engagement with the nascent fields of Arabic literary theory, historiography, and homiletics. The central argument of the book is that Salmon articulates a Jewish pietistic message through emergent Arabic-Islamic genres, transforming them to reflect his own religious and exegetical commitments. In this way, Salmon applies Arabic learning to the Bible at the same time that his understanding of the biblical text expands the Arabic intellectual tradition. The book advances these claims through six analytical chapters and an annotated English translation of the homilies and excursuses of Salmon's commentary.

Lovely Like Jerusalem The Fulfillment of the Old Testament in Christ and the Church【電子書籍】[ Fr. Aidan Nichols O.P. ]

"You are beautiful as Tirzah, my love, lovely like Jerusalem." ー Song of Songs

The highly regarded spiritual writer and theologian Fr. Aidan Nichols, O.P. presents an overview of the Old Testament by showing what it is and its relationship to the New Testament. He explains that it is essential for one to be familiar with the Old Testament in order to understand properly, and in a deeper way, the richness and message of the New. In particular, Fr. Nichols shows how important it is to grasp that connection in order to understand better and to believe in the message and the person of Christ.

Ignorance of the Old Testament makes it impossible to comprehend the entire divine plan that stretches between the two Testaments. Nichols maintains that we are ill-equipped to read and understand the great theologians, saints, and Scripture commentators of the Christian era without a deep familiarity with the Old Testament. Even understanding and appreciating the art of the Church remains limited if the Old Testament is a closed book for us.

Nichols made use of studies by biblical experts from various Christian denominations-notably Evangelicals and Anglicans-in writing this widely appealing work. He also drew on the Fathers and Doctors of the Church to help illuminate the beauty of the relationship between the two Testaments.

Jerusalem The Story of a City and a Family【電子書籍】[ Boaz Yakin ]

Jerusalem is a sweeping, epic graphic novel that follows a single familyーthree generations and fifteen very different peopleーas they are swept up in chaos, war, and nation-making from 1940-1948. Faith, family, and politics are the heady mix that fuel this ambitious, cinematic graphic novel.

With Jerusalem, author-filmmaker Boaz Yakin turns his finely-honed storytelling skills to a topic near to his heart: Yakin's family lived in Palestine during this period and was caught up in the turmoil of war just as his characters are. This is a personal work, but it is not a book with a political ax to grind. Rather, this comic seeks to tell the stories of a huge cast of memorable characters as they wrestle with a time when nothing was clear and no path was smooth.

Contested Sites in Jerusalem The Jerusalem Old City Initiative【

Contested Sites in Jerusalem is the third and final volume in a series of books which collectively present in detail the work of the Jerusalem Old City Initiative, or JOCI, a major Canadian-led Track Two diplomatic effort, undertaken between 2003 and 2014. The aim of the Initiative was to find sustainable governance solutions for the Old City of Jerusalem, arguably the most sensitive and intractable of the final status issues dividing Palestinians and Israelis.

This book examines the complex and often contentious issues that arise from the overlapping claims to the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif, the role of UNESCO, and the major implications of the JOCI Special Regime for such issues as archaeology, property, and the economy. Part I is dedicated to holy sites ? ground zero of the Israeli?Palestinian conflict, a point reinforced by the autumn 2014 disturbances which threatened to spiral out of control and engulf Palestinians and Israelis in yet another wave of violence. Parts II?IV of the volume contain studies on archaeology, property, and economics that were written after the completion of the Special Regime model, specifically to address in depth how a Special Regime would deal with each of these three important areas.

Contested Sites in Jerusalem offers an insightful explanation of the enormous challenges facing any attempt to find sustainable governance and security arrangements for the Old City in the context of a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians. It will therefore be of immense value to the policy-making community, as well as anyone in academia with a focus on Middle East politics, the Israeli?Palestinian conflict, and the Middle East peace process.

Escaping Salem The Other Witch Hunt of 1692【電子書籍】[ Richard Godbeer ]

Few events in American history are as well remembered as the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. But there was another witch hunt that year, in Stamford, Connecticut, that has never been examined in depth. Now Richard Godbeer describes this "other witch hunt" in a concise, fascinating narrative that illuminates the colonial world and shatters the stereotype of early New Englanders as quick to accuse and condemn. That stereotype originates with Salem, which was in many ways unlike other outbreaks of witch-hunting in the region. Drawing on eye-witness testimony, Godbeer tells the story of Kate Branch, a seventeen-year-old afflicted by strange visions and given to blood-chilling wails of pain and fright. Branch accused several women of bewitching her, two of whom were put on trial for witchcraft. The book takes us inside the courtroom--and inside the minds of the surprisingly skeptical Stamford townfolk. Was the pain and screaming due to natural causes, or to supernatural causes? Was Branch simply faking the symptoms? And if she was bewitched, why believe her specific accusations, since her information came from demons who might well be lying? For the judges, Godbeer shows, the trial was a legal thicket. All agreed that witches posed a real and serious threat, but proving witchcraft (an invisible crime) in court was another matter. The court in Salem had become mired in controversy over its use of dubious evidence. In an intriguing passage, Godbeer examines Magistrate Jonathan Selleck's notes on how to determine the guilt of someone accused of witchcraft--an illuminating look at what constituted proof of witchcraft at the time. The stakes were high--if found guilty, the two accused women would be hanged. In the afterword, Godbeer explains how he used the trial evidence to build his narrative, an inside look at the historian's craft that enhances this wonderful account of life in colonial New England.

Colonial Jerusalem The Spatial Construction of Identity and Difference in a City of Myth, 1948-2012【電子書籍】[ Colonial Jerusalem Thomas Philip Abowd ]

In one of the few anthropological works focusing on a contemporary Middle Eastern city, Colonial Jerusalem explores a vibrant urban center at the core of the decades-long Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This book shows how colonialism, far from being simply a fixture of the past as is often
suggested, remains a crucial component of Palestinian and Israeli realities today. Abowd deftly illuminates everyday life under Israel’s long military occupation as it is defined by processes and conditions of "apartness" and separation as Palestinians are increasingly regulated and controlled.
Abowd examines how both national communities are progressively divided by walls, checkpoints, and separate road networks in one of the most segregated cities in the world. Drawing upon recent theories on racial politics, colonialism, and urban spatial dynamics, Colonial Jerusalem analyzes
the politics of myth, history, and memory across an urban landscape integral to the national cosmologies of both Palestinians and Israelis and meaningful to all communities.

The History of Palestine From the Fall of Jerusalem to the Modern Time【電子書籍】[ Michael Russell ]

Palestine is essentially a land of small divisions, and its configuration does not fit it to form a separate entity; it “has never belonged to one nation and probably never will.” Its position gives the key to its history... (R. Macalister)

The destruction of Jerusalem, though it put an end to the polity of the Hebrew nation as an independent people, did not entirely disperse the remains of their miserable tribes, nor denude the Holy Land of its proper inhabitants. The number of the slain was indeed immense, and the multitude of captives carried away by Titus glutted the slave-markets of the Roman empire; but it is true, nevertheless, that many fair portions of Palestine were uninjured by the war, and continued to enjoy an enviable degree of prosperity under the government of their conquerors. The towns on the coast generally submitted to the legions without incurring the chance of a battle or the horrors of a siege; while the provinces beyond the Jordan, which formed the kingdom of Agrippa, maintained their allegiance to Rome throughout the whole period of the insurrection elsewhere so fatal, and especially to the inheritance of Judah and of Benjamin.

This book presents the History of Palestine, from the Fall of Jerusalem to the Present Time.

Digging deep underground, he discovered an ancient grave that, he claimed, belonged to an Old Testament queen. News of his find ricocheted around the world, evoking awe and envy alike, and inspiring others to explore Jerusalem’s storied past.

In the century and a half since the Frenchman broke ground, Jerusalem has drawn a global cast of fortune seekers and missionaries, archaeologists and zealots, all of them eager to extract the biblical past from beneath the city’s streets and shrines. Their efforts have had profound effects, not only on our understanding of Jerusalem’s history, but on its hotly disputed present. The quest to retrieve ancient Jewish heritage has sparked bloody riots and thwarted international peace agreements. It has served as a cudgel, a way to stake a claim to the most contested city on the planet. Today, the earth below Jerusalem remains a battleground in the struggle to control the city above.

Under Jerusalem takes readers into the tombs, tunnels, and trenches of the Holy City. It brings to life the indelible characters who have investigated this subterranean landscape. With clarity and verve, acclaimed journalist Andrew Lawler reveals how their pursuit has not only defined the conflict over modern Jerusalem, but could provide a map for two peoples and three faiths to peacefully coexist.

Jerusalem The Spatial Politics of a Divided Metropolis【電子書籍】[ Anne B. Shlay ]

Jerusalem has for centuries been known as the spiritual center for the three largest monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Yet Jerusalem’s other-worldly transcendence is far from the daily reality of Jerusalem, a city bombarded by conflict. The battle over who owns and controls Jerusalem is intensely disputed on a global basis. Few cities rival Jerusalem in how its divisions are expressed in the political sphere and in ordinary everyday life.

Jerusalem: The Spatial Politics of a Divided Metropolis is about this constellation of competing on-the-ground interests: the endless set of claims, struggles, and debates over the land, neighborhoods, and communities that make up Jerusalem. Spatial politics explain the motivations and organizing around the battle for Jerusalem and illustrate how space is a weapon in the Jerusalem struggle. These are the windows to the world of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Based on ninety interviews, years of fieldwork, and numerous Jerusalem experiences, this book depicts the groups living in Jerusalem, their roles in the conflict, and their connections to Jerusalem's development. Written for students, scholars, and those seeking to demystify the Jerusalem labyrinth, this book shows how religion, ideology, nationalism, and power underlie patterns of urban development, inequality, and conflict.

The Palestine campaign of 1917 saw Britain's armed forces rise from defeat to achieve stunning victory. After two failed attempts in the spring, at the end of the year they broke through the Ottoman line with an innovative mixture of old and new technology and tactics, and managed to advance over 50 miles, from Gaza to Jerusalem, in only two months.

As well as discussions of military strategy, Stuart Hadaway's gripping narrative of the campaign gives a broad account of the men on both sides who lived and fought in the harsh desert conditions of Palestine, facing not only brave and determined enemies, but also the environment itself: heat, disease and an ever-present thirst.

Involving Ottoman, ANZAC, British and Arab forces, the campaign saw great empires manoeuvring for the coveted Holy Land. It was Britain's victory in 1917, however, that redrew the maps of the Middle East and shaped the political climate for the century to come.

This book explores the place of Jerusalem and its Temple in Luke's Gospel, paying attention both to the Third Gospel's narrative and theological dynamics and to the historical and rhetorical milieu in which Luke composed his narrative. It argues for a portrait of the Jerusalem Temple in Luke's Gospel that is complex, multifold, and coherent, one comprised of interwoven strands constituting an engaging and intertextual response to the pressing theological concerns of the Evangelist's day.

Crying in the Ears of Jerusalem The World Against the Word of God【電子書籍】[ Dan Eze ]

The state of Israeli-Palestinian relations has led to political and religious chaos. In Crying in the Ears of Jerusalem, author Dan Eze demonstrates the shame surrounding this conflict, a conflict made from both falsely adopted principles and tortured politics. The path to restoring peace and bringing about a resolution is fraught with division. Eze provides insight to the coming end of the conflict and that insight stands in the Word of God. Crying in the Ears of Jerusalem discusses how God is resilient in showing that the holiness of the land is authentic and that he will answer the problem of the bad political choices. His truth is the most important piece of evidence to settle the conflict. Israel is the caretaker nation of the private land of God and the Jewish state is hard to find by the truth in the political peace process. God desired that peace should exist from the Promised Land and beyond. Putting out a call for the end to the war, Eze shares that peace is not cheap, but it can be achieved and it can exist within all of us and within everything that exists in our lives.

Discovering the Identity of Palestine, Israel, and Jerusalem through Noah's Three Sons【電子書籍】[ Beverly Fontenot ]

An attempt has been made to show the biblical and scientific relationship which exists between Palestine, Israel, and Jerusalem without prejudices. Since the New World was built after the Old World by Noah's three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, it seems logical that all nations can agree that they all came from one and are not unequal or unrelated in this "new" world.

From Jerusalem to a Kingdom by the Sea【電子書籍】[ Adel A. Dajani ]

Black swans - unforeseen events with extreme consequences - have formed the backdrop of the Dajani family's history for almost a century.

In From Jerusalem to a Kingdom by the Sea Adel A. Dajani, one of the first Arabs to ever go to Eton, takes us on a journey from the royal palaces of Libya where he was raised, rubbing shoulders with monarchs and presidents, to the prisons of Gaddafi where his father was a political prisoner after the deposition of the monarchy in 1969.

Dajani recounts his experiences of enshrined cultural ignorance about the Middle East and North Africa with humour and candour as he trades the playing fields of Tripoli College for those of Eton College. His journey takes us into his family history, to the Old City of Jerusalem and the orange groves of Jaffa, to the spires of Oxbridge in the 1930s and to post war London in the 1950s. We are given unique eye witness perspectives of a world in endless transition, including invaluable accounts of the Arab Spring Revolutions in Tunisia and Libya and their life-changing impact on Dajani and his young family.

Replete with vivid and memorable anecdotes, From Jerusalem to a Kingdom by the Sea is a humorous and compellingly narrated story of a generational voyage through the icebergs of international political upheavals. The reader accompanies Dajani on this voyage, buoyed by his universal themes of family, love, loss, identity and, ultimately, the triumph of the human experience in the face of adversity and displacement.

The Road to Antioch and Jerusalem The Crusader Pilgrimage of the Monte Cassino Chronicle【電子書籍】[ Francesca Petrizzo ]

This is the first translation of the Hystoria de via or ‘Monte Cassino Chronicle,’ one of the few surviving crusader sources from Southern Italy, where it was probably compiled (partly from known sources) between the 1130s and 1140s.

The chronicle’s original sections offer new and fresh insight on the knowledge and reception of the First Crusade in Southern Italy, and the devotional and pilgrimage practices which surrounded it. The introduction contextualises the chronicle in the environment which produced it, discussing the historiographical tradition at Montecassino, the likely sources for the Hystoria, and its significance as an original source. The introduction also comments extensively on the theological framework of the Hystoria, which offers an intensely religious view of the crusade as pilgrimage, and insists particularly on the primacy of violence in its vision of Christian devotional practice, and the crusade as continuous movement through suffering for the pilgrims. The translation, which is both faithful to the text and highly readable, is accompanied by detailed references and a full commentary.

The volume makes an important addition to the canon of crusader sources and provides a little-known example for specialists of the literature of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.

Kalliope has been content spending her days in Heaven's library with her best friend, not that she was given a choice. Unable to leave and with no idea where she came from, answers are not forthcoming until she finds herself in the path of Emmanuel, the first evil in creation, and his ambitions to replace their long absent God.

Kalliope finds that she is all that stands between the Realms and Emmanuel's desire for destruction. Thrown headfirst into a destiny kept hidden from her, she now must ascend the deserted throne of Purgatory and harness a rare power she never knew she held.

Her saving grace comes in the form of a flirtatious prince of Hell, Asmodeus, whose immediate attraction to her serves as an attractive distraction from certain ruination. A figure from her missing past, she is immediately taken with him and finds solace in his arms. He comes with his own set of problems, though, as his secrets might just be Kalliope's undoing.

Kalliope's problems only start with Emmanuel, as he might not be the only one the Realms need saving from when her fear takes hold and the temptation of taking godhood for herself instead of fighting sounds too good to pass up.

From Khartoum to Jerusalem The Dragoman Solomon Negima and his Clients (1885?1933)【電子書籍】[ Dr Rachel Mairs ]

In 2014, a collection of papers was found on eBay: a scrapbook, inside which was written 'Testimonial Book of Dragoman Solomon N. Negima'. The letters pasted into the testimonial book bear recommendations of Negima's services as dragoman ? a combination of tourist guide and interpreter ? in the Holy Land, from travellers of different nationalities, social classes, religions, genders and races.

Using these reference letters, and the first-hand published and unpublished accounts of the travellers themselves, this book tells the stories of several such tourists, including the intrepid Victorian female traveller, Ellen E. Miller, and an African?American minister, Rev. Charles T. Walker, who had been born into slavery. Between the lines of others' letters, Solomon Negima's remarkable life story also emerges: from a German mission school in Jerusalem, to the British army in the Sudan, to a successful career as a dragoman in Palestine and Syria, and finally to comfortable retirement with his son, Aziz, and daughter, Olinda, at a Mormon mission in Jerusalem.

The discovery of this unique scrapbook allows us an insight into the lives of individuals whose histories would otherwise be lost to us, and a new perspective on the history of travel in the Middle East.
