Shylock on Trial The Appellate Briefs【電子書籍】[ Richard A. Posner ]

William Shakespeare is inextricably linked with the law, his plays rich in its terms, settings, and thought processes. In Shylock on Trial: The Appellate Briefs, the Hon. Richard A. Posner and Charles Fried rule on Shakespeare’s classic drama The Merchant of Venice. Framed as a decision argued by two appellate judges of the period in a trial following Shylock’s sentencing by the Duke of Venice, these essays playfully walk the line between law and culture, dissecting the alleged legal inconsistencies of Shylock’s trial while engaging in an artful reading of the play itself. The resultant opinions shed fresh light on the relationship between literary and legal scholarship, demonstrating how Shakespeare’s thinking about legal concepts and legal practice points to a deep and sometimes vexed engagement with the law’s technical workings, its underlying premises, and its social effects.

Reading Shakespeare in Jewish Theological Frameworks Shylock Beyond the Holocaust【電子書籍】[ Caroline Wiesenthal Lion ]

Reading Shakespeare in Jewish Theological Frameworks: Shylock Beyond the Holocaust uses Jewish theology to mount a courageous new reading of a four-hundred-year-old play, The Merchant of Venice. While victimhood and antisemitism have been the understandable focus of the Merchant critical history for decades, Lion urges scholars, performers, and readers to see beyond the racism in Shakespeare's plays by recovering Shakespearean themes of potentiality and human flourishing as they emerge within the Jewish tradition itself. Lion joins the race conversation in Shakespeare studies today by drawing on the intellectual history and oppression of the Jewish people, borrowing from thinkers Franz Rosenzweig and Abraham Joshua Heschel as well as Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, Jacques Derrida, Emmanuel Levinas, and rabbis from the Talmud to today. This volume interweaves post-confessional, Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, and mystical ideas with Shakespeare's poetry and opens conversations of prophecy, love, spirituality, care, and community. It concludes with brief critical sketches of Antony and Cleopatra, Hamlet, and Macbeth to demonstrate that Shakespeare when interpreted through Jewish theological frameworks can point to post-credal solutions and transformed societal paradigms of repair that encourage action and the shaping of a finer world.

Shylock Is My Name William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice Retold: A Novel【電子書籍】[ Howard Jacobson ]

Man Booker Prize-winner Howard Jacobson brings his singular brilliance to this modern re-imagining of one of Shakespeare’s most unforgettable characters: Shylock

Winter, a cemetery, Shylock. In this provocative and profound interpretation of The Merchant of Venice, Shylock is juxtaposed against his present-day counterpart in the character of art dealer and conflicted father Simon Strulovitch. With characteristic irony, Jacobson presents Shylock as a man of incisive wit and passion, concerned still with questions of identity, parenthood, anti-Semitism and revenge.

While Strulovich struggles to reconcile himself to his daughter Beatrice's “betrayal” of her family and heritageーas she is carried away by the excitement of Manchester high society, and into the arms of a footballer notorious for giving a Nazi salute on the fieldーShylock alternates grief for his beloved wife with rage against his own daughter's rejection of her Jewish upbringing. Culminating in a shocking twist on Shylock’s demand for the infamous pound of flesh, Jacobson’s insightful retelling examines contemporary, acutely relevant questions of Jewish identity while maintaining a poignant sympathy for its characters and a genuine spiritual kinship with its antecedentーa drama which Jacobson himself considers to be “the most troubling of Shakespeare’s plays for anyone, but, for an English novelist who happens to be Jewish, also the most challenging.”

Shylock of Venice A Verse Play in Three Acts【電子書籍】[ Victor Sasson ]

Shylock of Venice is a sequel to Shakespeares The Merchant of Venice. While the trial scene in Shakespeares play is crude, unrealistic and unbelievable, designed for the Christian riffraff, the language of the play is very much poetic, with classical and biblical allusions, appreciable only by the educated. In Shylock of Venice, Portia and her male and female companions are exposed as legal impostors and day-dreamers whose one year romantic marriages have collapsed. All are toppled from the pinnacle of Belmont fantasy-land, for their kind of idealized romance -- based on good looks and money -- was destined to fall apart. Shylock the Jew, living among racist, abusive Christians, has his deserved day in court with a judge that is now more enlightened. With foreign help and through more realistic and legal means, Shylock is fully reinstated to his former situation and faith, and united with his repentant daughter, Jessica. Shylock of Venice presents idealized, romantic marriages that have collapsed, a credible retrial in which punishment is meted out to court impersonators, and Shylock is fully vindicated, compensated, and reinstated.

Shylock Must Die【電子書籍】[ Clive Sinclair ]

Since his first public appearance in the late 1590s, Shylock has been synonymous with antisemitism. Many of his bon mots remain common currency among Jew-haters; among them "3000 ducats" and the immortal "pound of flesh". But Shakespeare, being Shakespeare, was incapable of inventing anyone so uninteresting; instead he affords Shylock such ambiguity that some of his other lines have become keynotes for believers in shared humanity and tolerance. Following Shakespeare's example these stories ? all inspired by The Merchant of Venice ? range from the comic to the melancholic. Many pivot on significant productions of the play: Stockholm in 1944, London in 2012, and Venice in 2016. Some are concerned with domestic matters, others with the political, including one ? more outrageous than the others ? that links Shylock via Israel with the American presidency; most combine both. Running through these linked stories ? of which there are seven, like the ages of man ? is the cycle of family life, with all its comedy and tragedy.

Shylock's Venice The Remarkable History of Venice's Jews and the Ghetto【電子書籍】[ Harry Freedman ]

The thrilling story of the Jews in Venice ? and the truth behind one of Shakespeare's most famous characters.

Millions of visitors flood to Venice every year. Yet many are unaware of its history ? one of dramatic expansion but also of rapid decline. And essential to any history of Venice during its glory days is the story of its Jewish population. Venice gave the world the word ghetto. Astonishingly, the ghetto prison turned out to be as remarkable a place as the city of Venice itself.

With sound scholarship and a narrator's skill, Harry Freedman tells the story of Venice's Jews. From the founding of the ghetto in 1516, to the capture of Venice by Napoleon in 1797, he describes the remarkable cultural renaissance that took place in the Venice ghetto. Gates and walls notwithstanding, for the first time in European history Jews and Christians mingled intellectually, learned from each other, shared ideas and entered modernity together. When it came to culture, the ghetto walls were porous.

Any history of Venice and its Jews also can't avoid the story of Shakespeare's Shylock. The cultural and political revival in the Venice ghetto is often obscured from history by this fictional character. Who, we wonder, was Shylock? Would the people of Venice have recognized him and what did Shakespeare really think of him? Shakespeare's ambivalent anti-Semitism reflects attitudes to Jews in Elizabethan England ? but as Freedman demonstrates, Shakespeare's myth is wholly ignorant of the literary, cultural and interfaith revival that Shylock would have experienced.

Shylock Reasons with Mr. Chesterton and Other Poems【電子書籍】[ Humbert Wolfe ]

JEW-BAITING still! Two thousand years are run And still, it seems, good Master Chesterton, Nothing’s abated of the old offence. Changing its shape, it never changes tense. Other things were, this only was and is. And whether Judas murder with a kiss, Or Shylock catch a Christian with a gin, All all’s the sameーthe first enormous sin Traps Judas in the moneylender’s mesh And cuts from Jesus’ side the pound of flesh. Nor is this all the punishment. For still Through centuries to suffer were no ill If we in human axes and the rod Discerned the high pro-consulate of God Chastening his people. But we are not chastened. Age after age upon our hearts is fastened The same cold malice, and for all they bleed They burn for ever with unchanging greed. Grosser with suffering we grow, and one Calls to another “If in Babylon Are gold and silver, be content with them, Better found gold than lost Jerusalem.” They forget Zion; in the market place Rebuild the Temple for the Jewish race, And thus from age to age do Jews like me Have their revenge on Christianity, Since thus from age to age Christians like you Unchristian grow in hounding down the Jew. And thus from age to age His will is done, And Shylock’s sins produce a Chesterton.

Wrestling with Shylock Jewish Responses to The Merchant of Venice【

Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice occupies a unique place in world culture. As the fictional, albeit iconic, character of Shylock has been interpreted as exotic outsider, social pariah, melodramatic villain and tragic victim, the play, which has been performed and read in dozens of languages, has served as a lens for examining ideas and images of the Jew at various historical moments. In the last two hundred years, many of the play's stage interpreters, spectators, readers and adapters have themselves been Jews, whose responses are often embedded in literary, theatrical and musical works. This volume examines the ever-expanding body of Jewish responses to Shakespeare's most Jewishly relevant play.

So glaubt Charlton, Shakespeare schuf gegen seine anf?ngliche Absicht 'a character of great sensitivity and humanity, thus destroying the 'artistic unity' of the play while enlarging our understanding of human nature.' Au?erdem l?sst sich nur schwer sagen, was der Begriff der Kom?die im elisabethanischen Zeitalter beinhaltete: 'Perhaps in the sixteenth century the concept of comedy was broader and more elastic than it is today.'

Operation Shylock A Confession【電子書籍】[ Philip Roth ]

What if a lookalike stranger stole your name, usurped your biography and went around the world pretending to be you? In this tour de force of fact and fiction, Philip Roth meets a man who may or may not be Philip Roth. Because someone with that name has been touring the State of Israel, promoting a bizarre exodus in reverse of the Jews. Roth decides to stop himーeven if that means impersonating his impersonator. Suspenseful, hilarious, hugely impassioned, pulsing with intelligence and narrative energy, Operation Shylock is at once a spy story, a political thriller, a meditation on identity, and a confession.

Like Pushkin and Dostoevsky before him, Philip Roth takes on the subject of the writer’s double, which for Roth is inevitably bound up in Jewishness and identity. This is a bold, inventive and energetic departure from his past novels, a meta-novel, and, like all of his writing, full of ideas, wit, humor and startling observation.

This book is a compilation of poems and prose but it is really about fine poetry. Fine poetry is the music of mathematics - Elegance-Rhythm-Good Order-Feeling of the Unknown - are some characteristics. Look behind the words for their meanings. For sometimes poetry is colored by the Poet's philosophical, political and social leanings. This book also illustrates the truthfulness of the following:

A great poet is one who expresses our thoughts and feelings

--Shylock

A good writer/poet is a person who has done enough reading throughout a lifetime and has internalized the rhythms of the written word and has refined the ability to mimic those rhythms

--Professor X (paraphrased)

Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen

--leonardo da Vinci

Limagination est plus importante que la connaissance

Imagination is more important than knowledge

--Albert Einstein
