Doch bestimmt nicht so, wie es sich der etwas narzisstische, galizische Autor gew?nscht h?tte, sondern als Namensgeber f?r die sexuelle Obsession des Masochismus. Urheber dieses Terminus war Richard von Krafft-Ebing, der 1886 in seiner 'Psychopathia sexualis' diese Namensgebung in Anlehnung an den Begriff Sadismus, benannt nach dem Marquis de Sade, vornahm. Das Werk Sacher-Masochs, das Anlass zu dieser Namensgebung war, war unter anderem seine wohl ber?hmteste Novelle 'Venus im Pelz'. So geriet gerade diese Seite von Sacher-Masochs Schaffen in den Fokus; die Despotin und Tyrannin im Pelz wurde Gegenstand der Untersuchung und unz?hlige Abhandlungen ?ber die Psyche des Masochisten wurden geschrieben; hundertfach der Stoff bis in unsere Zeit adaptiert und interpretiert. Zwar kennen wir Sacher-Masoch auch als Autoren zahlreicher Judengeschichten, unter denen er als einer der wenigen Nicht-Juden heraussticht, doch gab gerade die 'Venus im Pelz' stets Anlass dazu, ihren Verfasser sehr einseitig zu betrachten. Was dabei fast in Vergessenheit geriet, war der Erz?hler Sacher-Masoch, von dem Gilles Deleuze sagt: '[...], da? Masoch den Roman mit der Kunst der stillstehenden Bewegung (suspense) um eine erz?hlerische Technik reinsten Wassers bereichert hat.' This manuscript tells of a man, Severin von Kusiemski, who is so infatuated with a woman, Wanda von Dunajew, that he asks to be her slave, and encourages her to treat him in progressively more degrading ways. At first Wanda does not understand or accede to the request, but after humouring Severin a bit she finds the advantages of the method to be interesting and enthusiastically embraces the idea, although at the same time she disdains Severin for allowing her to do so. Severin describes his feelings during these experiences as suprasensuality. Severin and Wanda travel to Florence. Along the way, Severin takes the generic Russian servant's name of "Gregor" and the role of Wanda's servant. In Florence, Wanda treats him brutally as a servant, and recruits a trio of African women to dominate him. The relationship arrives at a crisis when Wanda herself meets a man to whom she would like to submit, a Byronic hero known as Alexis Papadopolis. At the end of the book, Severin, humiliated by Wanda's new lover, loses the desire to submit. He says of Wanda: That woman, as nature has created her, and man at present is educating her, is man's enemy. She can only be his slave or his despot, but never his companion. He studied jurisprudence at Prague and Graz, and in 1857 became a teacher at the latter university. He published several historical works, but soon gave up his academic career to devote himself wholly to literature. For a number of years he edited the international review, Auf der Hohe, at Leipzig, but later removed to Paris, for he was always strongly Francophile. His last years he spent at Lindheim in Hesse, Germany, where he died on March 9, 1895. In 1873 he married Aurora von Rumelin, who wrote a number of novels under the pseudonym of Wanda von Dunajew, which it is interesting to note is the name of the heroine of Venus in Furs. Her sensational memoirs which have been the cause of considerable controversy were published in 1906.＜br /＞ During his career as writer an endless number of works poured from Sacher-Masoch's pen. Roman einer Karriere' von Klaus Mann, sowie 'Venus im Pelz' von Leopold von Sacher-Masoch im Hinblick auf die literarische Verarbeitung des Masochismus miteinander verglichen. W?hrend Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, durch die Inhalte seiner Romane zum Namensgeber des Masochismus avancierte halten eine Vielzahl von Literaturwissenschaftlern das in Klaus Manns Roman beschriebene masochistische Verh?ltnis zwischen Hendrik H?fgen und Juliette Martens nicht einmal f?r erw?hnenswert. Bezeichnend ist hierbei, dass nahezu die gesamte Sekund?rliteratur, die 'Mephisto. Roman einer Karriere' als Schl?sselroman und den Protagonisten als Schl?sselfigur ausmachen will, davon auszugehen scheint, dass der Masochismus nur stellvertretend f?r die Homosexualit?t Gustav Gr?ndgens steht. Die folgende Arbeit wird sich jedoch von der Schl?sselromanproblematik l?sen. Dabei soll davon ausgegangen werden, dass beide Autoren gezielt den Masochismus eingesetzt haben um den Inhalt ihres Werkes hervorzuheben. W?hrend der Roman Masochs auf autobiographischen Erlebnissen basiert und unverh?llt aber diskret die Form eines masochistisches Verh?ltnisses dem Leser n?her zu bringen versucht, nutzt Klaus Mann dieses Verh?ltnis, um dem Charakter seines Protagonisten eine besondere Note zu verleihen und seinem Handeln eine m?gliche Erkl?rung beizuf?gen.
