Spenserian satire A tradition of indirection【電子書籍】[ Rachel E. Hile ]
|

Scholars of Edmund Spenser have focused much more on his accomplishments in epic and pastoral than his work in satire. Scholars of early modern English satire almost never discuss Spenser. However, these critical gaps stem from later developments in the canon rather than any insignificance in Spenser's accomplishments and influence on satiric poetry. This book argues that the indirect form of satire developed by Spenser served during and after Spenser's lifetime as an important model for other poets who wished to convey satirical messages with some degree of safety. The book connects key Spenserian texts in The Shepheardes Calender and the Complaints volume with poems by a range of authors in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, including Joseph Hall, Thomas Nashe, Tailboys Dymoke, Thomas Middleton and George Wither, to advance the thesis that Spenser was seen by his contemporaries as highly relevant to satire in Elizabethan England.

Bottoms Up: An Application of the Slapstick to Satire【電子書籍】[ George Jean Nathan ]
|

Bottoms Up: An Application of the Slapstick to Satire by George Jean Nathan is a witty and satirical exploration of the role of humor, particularly slapstick, in social and cultural commentary. Nathan, a renowned American theater critic and essayist, delves into the use of slapstick humor to critique societal norms, politics, and the absurdities of human behavior. The book argues that, beyond its physical comedy and visual absurdity, slapstick can serve as a powerful tool for satire, exposing the contradictions and follies of the world.Through a combination of sharp analysis and comedic insight, Nathan dissects the effectiveness of slapstick in various forms of entertainment, particularly in theater and cinema. He examines the works of famous slapstick comedians of the time, such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, exploring how their slapstick routines can communicate complex ideas about human nature, authority, and class. The book also touches on how slapstick humor, by exaggerating the physical and emotional aspects of everyday life, creates a space for viewers to laugh at the very systems and structures that might normally be taken seriously.

The Rebirth of Satire in Revivals of European Operettas【電子書籍】[ Lisa Feurzeig ]
|

Since 1997, revivals have moved operetta away from the nostalgic performance style of the mid twentieth century, returning to its original satirical spirit grounded in ironic mockery of political and social norms and institutions. This Element compares productions of Offenbach's Belle H?l?ne and K?lm?n's Herzogin von Chicago, considering their choices with regard to plot, text, performance style, music, and costumes and sets. In every case, there is some reinterpretation involved. Satire of times, places, and current politics can be found. Some versions tweak the original while others expand and alter it in a full Regietheater approach, often influenced by a postmodern aesthetic. Directors and performers perceive an opportunity to recreate the central experience of operetta ? but is that defined as the original text, Dionysian pleasure, or absurdist theater? The genre lives on mostly through creative approaches to revival.

The Ocean of Mirth Reading H?sy?r?ava-Prahasana? of Jagad??vara Bha???ch?rya, A Political Satire for All Times【電子書籍】[ Jyotirmaya Sharma ]
|

The Ocean of Mirth brings together an English translation and an analytical interpretation of a singularly crucial, but obscure, Sanskrit medieval text, the H?sy?r?ava-Prahasana? of Jagad??vara Bha???ch?rya. As a political satire, the volume finds significant resonances among contemporary questions of politics and society across the world, and examines the tension inherent in the clash of ideas such as freedom and order. In an unabashed celebration of disorder as the only way to fight violence, tyranny and autocratic impulses, H?sy?r?ava suggests no return to a Golden Age or to the rule of an iconic king; nor is there a promise of a saviourーa political farce that ends without any denouement in sight. One of the first authentic English translations of a neglected Sanskrit text from medieval India, this translation throws up interesting questions regarding values such as freedom, violence, order, chaos and disorder.

This volume will be a major intervention in the discovery of a significant non-canonical text of classical literature and will be indispensable for students, scholars and researchers of politics, philosophy, sociology, Indian literatures, Indology, comparative literature and culture studies.

The Grand Duke A Whimsical Operetta of Comic Satire and Theatrical Misadventures【電子書籍】[ W.S. Gilbert ]
|

W.S. Gilbert's "The Grand Duke" is a satirical comic opera that unfolds in the fictional Duchy of Pfennig Halbpfennig. With its characteristic wit, Gilbert employs intricate wordplay and clever rhymes that critique the absurdities of authority and social structures. The narrative centers around themes of love, betrayal, and the absurdities of governance, featuring a cast of eccentric characters embroiled in a farcical plot that includes a conspiratorial scheme to usurp the throne. Gilbert's masterful command of comedic timing and his sharp social commentary reflect the context of Victorian England, where the interplay of class and politics was rife for satire. W.S. Gilbert, renowned for his collaboration with composer Arthur Sullivan, was a prominent figure in Victorian theatre, celebrated for his unique ability to merge humor with social critique. His interest in the absurdities of bureaucracy, as observed in various social circles, profoundly influenced his playwrighting. "The Grand Duke," first performed in 1896, is significant as it represents the culmination of Gilbert's theatrical endeavors, reflecting both his artistic evolution and the societal mores of his time. This delightful opera is highly recommended for readers and theatre enthusiasts alike, offering an incisive look at human folly wrapped in humor and melody. Gilbert's sharp observations paired with memorable musicality make "The Grand Duke" a timeless piece that continues to resonate, inviting reflection on the intricacies of power dynamics and personal relationships.

A MODEST PROPOSAL: The style of straight-faced satire (Illustrated and Free Audiobook Link)【電子書籍】[ Jonathan Swift ]
|

A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People From Being a Burden on Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Publick, commonly referred to as A Modest Proposal, is a Juvenalian satirical essay written and published anonymously by Jonathan Swift in 1729. Swift suggests that impoverished Irish might ease their economic troubles by selling their children as food for rich gentlemen and ladies. This satirical hyperbole mocks heartless attitudes towards the poor, as well as Irish policy in general.

In English writing, the phrase "a modest proposal" is now conventionally an allusion to this style of straight-faced satire.

Jonathan Swift almost defines satire in this biting and brutal pamphlet in which he suggests that poor (Catholic) Irish families should fatten up their children and sell them to the rich (Protestant) land owners, thus solving the twin problems of starving children and poverty in one blow. When the “Proposal” was published in 1729, Swift was quickly attacked, and even accused of barbarity ? the exact state the “Proposal” was written to expose

Features:
? Adventures in Fishing for Men A Humorous Satire of Christian Evangelism【電子書籍】[ Jeremy Myers ]

|

Does evangelism and witnessing make you uncomfortable? If so, you’re about to be set free … or maybe you’ll become even more uncomfortable.

Using irony, satire, and humor, Jeremy Myers writes Adventures in Fishing for Men as an allegorical story about a man’s quest to become a world-famous fishermanーwithout ever catching any fish.

As an allegory about evangelism, this book is not about fishing, but about fishing for men.

While a few of the stories are from the author’s own life, all of the stories portray the general Christian approach to evangelism. As you read Adventures in Fishing for Men, you will see yourself in many of the stories, and will either be set free from some of the strange methods of modern evangelistic practices, or you will become upset at how your cherished traditions are being portrayed. But these were the two ways people responded to the parables of Jesus as well.

The nameless fisherman of this book serves as a mirror to all who read of his adventures, shining a light on how far Christianity has strayed from the example set by Jesus.

He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

The National Joker Abraham Lincoln and the Politics of Satire【電子書籍】[ Todd Nathan Thompson ]
|

Abraham Lincoln’s sense of humor proved legendary during his own time and remains a celebrated facet of his personality to this day. Indeed, his love of jokesーhearing them, telling them, drawing morals from themーprompted critics to dub Lincoln “the National Joker.” The political cartoons and print satires that mocked Lincoln often trafficked in precisely the same images and terms Lincoln humorously used to characterize himself. In this intriguing study, Todd Nathan Thompson considers the politically productive tension between Lincoln’s use of satire and the satiric treatments of him in political cartoons, humor periodicals, joke books, and campaign literature. By fashioning a folksy, fallible persona, Thompson shows, Lincoln was able to use satire as a weapon without being severely wounded by it.

In his speeches, writings, and public persona, Lincoln combined modesty and attack, engaging in strategic self-deprecation while denouncing his opponents, their policies, and their arguments, thus refiguring satiric discourse as political discourse and vice versa. At the same time, he astutely deflected his opponents’ criticisms of him by embracing and sometimes preemptively initiating those criticisms. Thompson traces Lincoln’s comic sources and explains how, in reapplying others’ jokes and stories to political circumstances, he transformed humor into satire. Time and time again, Thompson shows, Lincoln engaged in self-mockery, turning negative assumptions or depictions of himーas ugly, cowardly, jocular, inexperiencedーinto positive traits that identified him as an everyman while attacking his opponents’ claims to greatness, heroism, and experience as aristocratic or demagogic. Thompson also considers how Lincoln took advantage of political cartoons and other media to help proliferate the particular Lincoln image of the “self-made man”; underscores exceptions to Lincoln’s ability to mitigate negative, satiric depictions of him; and closely examines political cartoons from both the 1860 and 1864 elections. Throughout, Thompson’s deft analysis brings to life Lincoln’s popular humor.

The Right Has Never Been So Wrong: Political Satire For Our Times, Part 1 of 2【電子書籍】[ Finn Contini ]

Show no mercy to the merciless. No conservative is spared in this comedic masterpiece.

Popular conservatives targeted and reduced to rubble are Michele Bachmann appearing as a contestant on The New Dating Game, Newt Gingrich throwing a Thanksgiving Dinner party with conservatives for guests and liberals on the menu, Donald Trump teaching Business 101 to college students, Sarah Palin proving she is Alaska's village idiot, unique interviews with George W. Bush, and Fox News Channel is given the thrashing of its life for being the most partisan and intolerant "news" network on TV.

Other popular conservatives like Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, and prominent Tea Partiers are bloodied as well, punctuated with laugh-out-loud humor, such as what happened when I pitched a movie idea to Hollywood executives, a transcript of a conversation a listening device picked up in the Oval Office between George W. Bush and Karl Rove in 2001, and much more.

This book has been divided into two parts, this edition being part one. Both editions are comparable in quality, humor, and interest; the content has merely been separated, because eBooks in the humor category should be quick and easy to read. The reason The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, the best satirical show on TV (besides The Colbert Report), is thirty minutes long isn't because the writers could only write a half hour of material ー it's because direct, in-your-face satire needs to be taken in small doses.

With The Right Has Never Been So Wrong: Political Satire For Our Times, the laughs never stop as a new humorist bursts on the scene with this outstanding work of literary art.

Crazy Funny Popular Black Satire and The Method of Madness【電子書籍】[ Lisa A. Guerrero ]

This book examines the ways in which contemporary works of black satire make black racial madness legible in ways that allow us to see the connections between suffering from racism and suffering from mental illness.

Showing how an understanding of racism as a root cause of mental and emotional instability complicates the ways in which we think about racialized identity formation and the limits of socially accepted definitions of (in)sanity, it concentrates on the unique ability of the genre of black satire to make knowable not only general qualities of mental illness that are so often feared or ignored, but also how structures of racism contribute a specific dimension to how we understand the different ways in which people of color, especially black people, experience and integrate mental instability into their own understandings of subjecthood.

Drawing on theories from ethnic studies, popular culture studies, cultural studies, psychoanalysis, and trauma theory to offer critical textual analyses of five different instances of new millennial black satire in television, film, and literature ? the television show Chappelle’s Show, the Spike Lee film Bamboozled, the novel The White Boy Shuffle by Paul Beatty, the novels Erasure and I Am Not Sidney Poitier by Percival Everett, and the television show Key & Peele ? Crazy Funny presents an account of the ways in which contemporary black satire rejects the boundaries between sanity and insanity as a way to animate the varied dimensions of being a racialized subject in a racist society.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - All Time Best Classic Satire: Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn Classic for the Nook : A Great Story For Children of All Ages【電子書籍】[ Mark Twain ]
|

Huckleberry Finn, rebel against school and church, casual inheritor of gold treasure, rafter of the Mississippi, and savior of Jim the runaway slave, is the archetypal American maverick. Fleeing the respectable society that wants to “sivilize” him, Huck Finn shoves off with Jim on a rhapsodic raft journey down the Mississippi River. As Huck learns about love, responsibility, and how to make moral choices, the trip becomes a metaphoric voyage through his own soul, culminating in the glorious moment when he decides to “go to hell” rather than return Jim to slavery.Mark Twain defined “clazzic” as “a book which people praise and don’t read”; Huckleberry Finn is a happy exception to this rule. Twain’s mastery of dialect, coupled with his famous wit, makes The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn one of the most enjoyable and distinctly American clazzics ever written.
Book Excerpt

YOU don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain't no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth. That is nothing. I never seen anybody but lied one time or another, without it was Aunt Polly, or the widow, or maybe Mary. Aunt PollyーTom's Aunt Polly, she isーand Mary, and the Widow Douglas is all told about in that book, which is mostly a true book, with some stretchers, as I said before.

Now the way that the book winds up is this: Tom and me found the money that the robbers hid in the cave, and it made us rich. We got six thousand dollars apieceーall gold. It was an awful sight of money when it was piled up. Well, Judge Thatcher he took it and put it out at interest, and it fetched us a dollar a day apiece all the year round ーmore than a body could tell what to do with. The Widow Douglas she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me; but it was rough living in the house all the time, considering how dismal regular and decent the widow was in all her ways; and so when I couldn't stand it no longer I lit out. I got into my old rags and my sugar?hogshead again, and was free and satisfied. But Tom Sawyer he hunted me up and said he was going to start a band of robbers, and I might join if I would go back to the widow and be respectable. So I went back.

The widow she cried over me, and called me a poor lost lamb, and she called me a lot of other names, too, but she never meant no harm by it. She put me in them new clothes again, and I couldn't do nothing but sweat and sweat, and feel all cramped up. Well, then, the old thing commenced again. The widow rung a bell for supper, and you had to come to time. When you got to the table you couldn't go right to eating, but you had to wait for the widow to tuck down her head and grumble a little over the victuals, though there warn't really anything the matter with them,ーthat is, nothing only everything was cooked by itself. In a barrel of odds and ends it is different; things get mixed up, and the juice kind of swaps around, and the things go better.

Only a Frump could be elected in this modern age.

Because no one trusted a man to get anything right anymore. The first female president fit the model, and this reporter was putting the pieces together on how she got elected.

She simply put a new approach to classic poltical ploys. The right gal at the rigth time.

All wasn't smooth sailing though...

Excerpt:

"About time you showed up."

"Hey, I'm right on time!"

"Yea, but I needed to talk to someone hours ago."

"Oh, that research assignment..."

"Right. Why did I have to be assigned researching the Frump Presidency?"

"Wasn't it about the trend of older female candidates being elected?"

"Yea, frumpy ones. Not young, not necessarily married, preferably divorced after their hubby ran off with a younger woman, not particularly photogenic - Frumps."

"Is that your result after all your research? Older women make frumpy politicians?"

"Of course not. It's just a marketing angle I was working on. That's the key point all these women had in common. The ones who could claim they were victims of a womanizer got better poll results, especially after they could show that they ‘persisted and resisted’ and made their own way afterwards."

"Well, it seems a bit narrow..."

"Sorry, but the facts came out that way. Suddenly, we had only women running for office, and no younger ones. No one wanted to work for the good-looking ones, as it was an invitation to have harassment charges thrown at you."

"You can't be serious! That's a little over the top, isn't it?"

"That's what the research showed. OK, maybe the marketing needs to be massaged a bit. You have to admit that being a male became political dynamite in those early 2000 elections, particularly after 2020 or so."

"Because of all the harassment claims and publicity?"

"Exactly. Male celebrities and politicians were getting slammed all over the place. Meanwhile, media was under-reporting court cases about female teachers bedding their underage male students."

"Are you serious?"

"Sure, just check the Drudge archives. That and Blaze were showing those while everyone else was chasing the skirt chasers."

"How did that fit your research into female Presidents after 2020?"

"Polls were all over the place, and so were news reporting. Corporate news channels were reporting according to whoever was in charge of the newsrooms. And you started seeing a shift once the various complaints got rid of most of the male reporters and their complicit execs..."

With Bonus Short Stories:

The Integrity Implosions - A simple electronic circuit was developed that would detect anyone lying or skirting the truth by giving them the runs. And then it's circuit was released to the Internet and soon was mass produced to put into gag gifts. Of course, when these found their way to Congress...

The Chardonney Conspiracy - Mrs. C_ was effectively limited to walking her woods and drinking Chardonnay while she continued to work on an endless memoir. Poe and the Subversion of American Literature Satire, Fantasy, Critique【電子書籍】[ Dr Robert T. Tally Jr. ]
|

Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2014

In Poe and the Subversion of American Literature, Robert T. Tally Jr. argues that Edgar Allan Poe is best understood, not merely as a talented artist or canny magazinist, but primarily as a practical joker who employs satire and fantasy to poke fun at an emergent nationalist discourse circulating in the United States. Poe's satirical and fantastic mode, on display even in his apparently serious short stories and literary criticism, undermines the earnest attempts to establish a distinctively national literature in the nineteenth century. In retrospect, Poe's work also subtly subverts the tenets of an institutionalized American Studies in the twentieth century. Tally interprets Poe's life and works in light of his own social milieu and in relation to the disciplinary field of American literary studies, finding Poe to be neither the po?te maudit of popular mythology nor the representative American writer revealed by recent scholarship. Rather, Poe is an untimely figure whose work ultimately makes a mockery of those who would seek to contain it. Drawing upon Gilles Deleuze's distinction between nomad thought and state philosophy, Tally argues that Poe's varied literary and critical writings represent an alternative to American literature. Through his satirical critique of U.S. national culture and his otherworldly projection of a postnational space of the imagination, Poe establishes a subterranean, nomadic, and altogether worldly literary practice.

The Birth of Modern Political Satire Romeyn de Hooghe and the Glorious Revolution【電子書籍】[ Meredith McNeill Hale ]

|

Political satire has been a primary weapon of the press since the eighteenth century and is still intimately associated with one of the most important values of western democratic society: the right of individuals to free speech. This study documents one of the most important moments in the history of printed political imagery, when political print became what we would recognise as modern political satire. Contrary to conventional historical and art historical narratives, which place the emergence of political satire in the news-driven coffee-house culture of eighteenth-century London, Meredith M. Hale locates the birth of the genre in the late seventeenth-century Netherlands in the contentious political milieu surrounding William III's invasion of England known as the 'Glorious Revolution'. The satires produced between 1688 and 1690 by the Dutch printmaker Romeyn de Hooghe on the events surrounding William III's campaigns against James II and Louis XIV establish many of the qualities that define the genre to this day: the transgression of bodily boundaries; the interdependence of text and image; the centrality of dialogic text to the generation of meaning; serialized production; and the emergence of the satirist as a primary participant in political discourse. This study, the first in-depth analysis of De Hooghe's satires since the nineteenth century, considers these prints as sites of cultural influence and negotiation, works that both reflected and helped to construct a new relationship between the government and the governed.

Humour, Wit and Satire of the Seventeenth Century【電子書籍】[ Various ]
|

Our forefathers delighted to call their country "Merrie England;" and so, in very truth, it was. All sorts of sports and pastimes, such as no other nation can show, were then in use; and even the elders, in their hours of relaxation, were wont to exchange a merry jest with one another. Perhaps some of their jokes lacked the refinement of the present age, but they denoted a keen sense of humour. Many, nay most, cannot be reproduced at the present day, and much has this book suffered therefrom; and it is for this reason that the jest-books and ballads of this century are so little known. Some few have been printed in small editions, either privately, or for dilettante societies; but they are not fit for general perusal, and the public at large know nothing of them. This is specially the case with the ballad literature of the century, which is unusually rich. The Pepys, Roxburghe, Bagford, Luttrell, and other collections, are priceless treasures; but I know no publisher who would be bold enough to reproduce them, in their entirety, for the use of the general public. By this I do not wish to cast any slur, either on the modesty, or morality, of our ancestors; but their ways were not quite as ours.

The Satiric Decade Satire and the Rise of Republican Political Culture in France, 1830-1840【電子書籍】[ Amy Wiese Forbes ]
|

Where do democratic political practices originate? This issue has long concerned republics, but few historians have studied the process by which people learn the skills of rights-based government. In this illuminating history, Amy Wiese Forbes addresses these origins by analyzing how republicanism took shape through the political satire that flooded French newspapers, theaters, courtrooms, and even academic life in 1830. Forbes shows that satire was the chief source of the critical spirit of republicanism that erupted in the 1840s and sustained the Republic in the 1870s and argues against the notion that satire had no lasting political impact. This book will speak to historians of French politics, republicanism, popular culture, the July Monarchy, satire and political humor, class and gender formation, and legal history.
