Thomas Troward, a prominent figure in the New Thought movement, explores the power of the mind in his seminal works, 'The Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science' and 'The Dore Lectures on Mental Science'. Troward's writing style is characterized by its clarity and precision, making complex philosophical concepts accessible to a wide audience. Through his lectures, Troward delves into the principles of mental science, focusing on the transformative potential of thought and its influence on one's reality. Thomas Troward, a British philosopher and judge, was deeply interested in the relationship between mind and matter, which inspired him to delve into the realms of mental science. His background in law and keen analytical skills informed his exploration of the power of thought and its impact on human experience. I highly recommend 'The Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science' and 'The Dore Lectures on Mental Science' to readers interested in the intersection of philosophy, psychology, and metaphysics. Reading in the Brain The New Science of How We Read【電子書籍】[ Stanislas Dehaene ]
|

A renowned cognitive neuroscientist?s fascinating and highly informative account of how the brain acquires reading

How can a few black marks on a white page evoke an entire universe of sounds and meanings? In this riveting investigation, Stanislas Dehaene provides an accessible account of the brain circuitry of reading and explores what he calls the ?reading paradox?: Our cortex is the product of millions of years of evolution in a world without writing, so how did it adapt to recognize words? Reading in the Brain describes pioneering research on how we process language, revealing the hidden logic of spelling and the existence of powerful unconscious mechanisms for decoding words of any size, case, or font.

Dehaene?s research will fascinate not only readers interested in science and culture, but also educators concerned with debates on how we learn to read, and who wrestle with pathologies such as dyslexia. Like Steven Pinker, Dehaene argues that the mind is not a blank slate: Writing systems across all cultures rely on the same brain circuits, and reading is only possible insofar as it fits within the limits of a primate brain. Setting cutting-edge science in the context of cultural debate, Reading in the Brain is an unparalleled guide to a uniquely human ability.

Evidence and Evolution The Logic Behind the Science【電子書籍】[ Elliott Sober ]
|

How should the concept of evidence be understood? And how does the concept of evidence apply to the controversy about creationism as well as to work in evolutionary biology about natural selection and common ancestry? In this rich and wide-ranging book, Elliott Sober investigates general questions about probability and evidence and shows how the answers he develops to those questions apply to the specifics of evolutionary biology. Drawing on a set of fascinating examples, he analyzes whether claims about intelligent design are untestable; whether they are discredited by the fact that many adaptations are imperfect; how evidence bears on whether present species trace back to common ancestors; how hypotheses about natural selection can be tested, and many other issues. His book will interest all readers who want to understand philosophical questions about evidence and evolution, as they arise both in Darwin's work and in contemporary biological research.

Well, if you start to think of them less like things you can’t see with complex little nuclei and more like the alphabet of nature, which in different configurations can make a rose, a galaxy or a newborn baby, they might start to feel a little more understandable. Or gravitational waves ? they sound poetic, but why are they creating so much excitement? Think of them as the voice of space, vibrations on the drumskin of space-time ? before delving into all their complexities.

In twenty-one short and engaging chapters, Chown explains the one thing you need to know to understand some of the most important scientific ideas of our time. On the Method of Zadig Essay #1 from "Science and Hebrew Tradition"【電子書籍】[ Thomas Henry Huxley ]
|

In "On the Method of Zadig," Thomas Henry Huxley presents a compelling exploration of scientific inquiry and philosophical reflection, using Voltaire's character Zadig as a lens to critique and examine the processes of reasoning and understanding within the natural sciences. Through a blend of accessible prose and incisive commentary, Huxley advocates for a rational, evidence-based approach to knowledge, resisting dogmas and superstitions that hinder true understanding. His literary style is marked by clarity and wit, situating the book within the broader context of 19th-century debates over science, religion, and human understanding, thus making it a pivotal text in the discourse surrounding the scientific method. Huxley, a noted biologist and a prominent advocate of Darwinian evolution, wrote this work during a period when the conflict between science and traditional belief systems was intensifying. His background in biology, coupled with his experiences in the Scientific Society, fueled his desire to promote a rational approach to knowledge'??one rooted in observation and experimentation. Huxley'??s insights reflect his own struggles against societal and intellectual resistance, reinforcing his role as 'Darwin's Bulldog' in a time of significant scientific upheaval. For readers seeking to deepen their understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of science, "On the Method of Zadig" is an essential read. Huxley'??s astute observations invite readers to rethink the methodologies by which we acquire knowledge, challenging them to adopt a more critical and inquisitive stance towards the world around them. This book resonates with anyone interested in the intersection of science, philosophy, and the intellectual history of modern thought.

Compelling and informative, this overview of medical history traces modern-day medical practices from their roots in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Physician Howard W. Haggard ー a popular lecturer, prolific author, and Yale professor ー specialized in explaining health-related issues to ordinary people. This 1929 survey offers fascinating facts and anecdotes from around the world in its chronicles of the development of obstetrical methods, anesthesia, surgery, drugs, and other landmarks in the science of healing. The first chapters examine the treatment of child-bearing women throughout the centuries, from practices related to the legends of Aesculapius and Hygeia to the long battle against puerperal fever, the invention of obstetrical forceps, and the rise of anesthesia. A profile of the progress of surgery explores the violent opposition to early attempts at studying anatomy through human dissection, and the gradual adoption of antiseptic principles. Quarantine, vaccination, and a heightened public awareness are cited among the record of attempts to conquer plague and pestilence.Final chapters investigate faith healing through the ages and occult practices such as exorcism and the trade in holy relics; herb doctors and medieval apothecaries; the recognition of bacteria as a cause of infectious disease; and the eventual trend away from treatment and toward prevention.

Betrayal of Science and Reason How Anti-Environmental Rhetoric Threatens Our Future【電子書籍】[ Paul R. Ehrlich ]

Despite widespread public support for environmental protection, a backlash against environmental policies is developing. Fueled by outright distortions of fact and disregard for the methodology of science, this backlash appears as an outpouring of seemingly authoritative opinions by so-called experts in books, articles, and appearances on television and radio that greatly distort what is or is not known by environmental scientists. Through relentless repetition, the flood of anti-environmental sentiment has acquired an unfortunate aura of credibility, and is now threatening to undermine thirty years of progress in defining, understanding, and seeking solutions to global environmental problems.

In this hard-hitting and timely book, world-renowned scientists and writers Paul R. Ehrlich and Anne H. Ehrlich speak out against what they call the "brownlash." Brownlash rhetoric, created by public relations spokespersons and a few dissident scientists, is a deliberate misstatement of scientific findings designed to support an anti-environmental world view and political agenda. As such, it is deeply disturbing to environmental scientists across the country. The agenda of brownlash proponents is rarely revealed, and the confusion and distraction its rhetoric creates among policymakers and the public prolong an already difficult search for realistic and equitable solutions to global environmental problems.

In Betrayal of Science and Reason, the Ehrlichs explain clearly and with scientific objectivity the empirical findings behind environmental issues including population growth, desertification, food production, global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, and biodiversity loss. They systematically debunk revisionist "truths" such as:

population growth does not cause environmental damage, and may even be beneficial

humanity is on the verge of abolishing hunger; food scarcity is a local or regional problem and is not indicative of overpopulation

there is no extinction crisis

natural resources are superabundant, if not infinite

global warming and acid rain are not serious threats to humanity

stratospheric ozone depletion is a hoax

risks posed by toxic substances are vastly exaggerated

The Ehrlichs counter the erroneous information and misrepresentation put forth by the brownlash, presenting accurate scientific information about current environmental threats that can be used to evaluate critically and respond to the commentary of the brownlash. They include important background material on how science works and provide extensive references to pertinent scientific literature. In addition, they discuss how scientists can speak out on matters of societal urgency yet retain scientific integrity and the support of the scientific community.

Betrayal of Science and Reason is an eye-opening look at current environmental problems and the fundamental importance of the scientific process in solving them. It presents unique insight into the sources and implications of anti-environmental rhetoric, and provides readers with a valuable means of understanding and refuting the feel-good fables that constitute the brownlash.

Rainy Brain, Sunny Brain The New Science of Optimism and Pessimism【電子書籍】[ Elaine Fox ]

Are you optimistic or pessimistic? Glass half-full or half-empty? Do you look on the bright side or turn towards the dark? These are easy questions for most of us to answer, because our personality types are hard-wired into our brains. As pioneering psychologist and neuroscientist Elaine Fox has discovered, our outlook on life reflects our primal inclination to seek pleasure or avoid dangerーinclinations that, in many people, are healthily balanced. But when our 'fear brain' or 'pleasure brain' is too strong, the results can be disastrous, as those of us suffering from debilitating shyness, addiction, depression, or anxiety know all too well.

Luckily, anyone suffering from these afflictions has reason to hope. Stunning breakthroughs in neuroscience show that our brains are more malleable than we ever imagined. In Rainy Brain, Sunny Brain, Fox describes a range of techniquesーfrom traditional cognitive behavioural therapy to innovative cognitive bias retraining exercisesーthat can actually alter our brains’ circuitry, strengthening specific thought processes by exercising the neural systems that control them. The implications are enormous: lifelong pessimists can train themselves to think positively and find happiness, while pleasure-seekers inclined toward risky or destructive behavior can take control of their lives.

Drawing on her own cutting-edge research, Fox shows how we can retrain our brains to brighten our lives and learn to flourish. With keen insights into how genes, life experiences and cognitive processes interleave together to make us who we are, Rainy Brain, Sunny Brain revolutionises our basic concept of individuality. We learn that we can influence our own personalities, and that our lives are only as 'sunny' or as 'rainy' as we allow them to be.

**A New York Times Most Anticipated Book of the Summer

A taboo-busting romp through the shame, stink, and strange science of sweating.**

Sweating may be one of our weirdest biological functions, but it’s also one of our most vital and least understood. In The Joy of Sweat, Sarah Everts delves into its role in the bodyーand in human history.

Why is sweat salty? Why do we sweat when stressed? Why do some people produce colorful sweat? And should you worry about Big Brother tracking the hundreds of molecules that leak out in your sweatーnot just the stinky ones or alleged pheromonesーbut the ones that reveal secrets about your health and vices?

Everts’s entertaining investigation takes readers around the worldーfrom Moscow, where she participates in a dating event in which people sniff sweat in search of love, to New Jersey, where companies hire trained armpit sniffers to assess the efficacy of their anti-sweat products. In Finland, Everts explores the delights of the legendary smoke sauna and the purported health benefits of good sweat, while in the Netherlands she slips into the sauna theater scene, replete with costumes, special effects, and towel dancing.

Along the way, Everts traces humanity’s long quest to control sweat, culminating in the multibillion-dollar industry for deodorants and antiperspirants. And she shows that while sweating can be annoying, our sophisticated temperature control strategy is one of humanity’s most powerful biological traits.

Deeply researched and written with great zest, The Joy of Sweat is a fresh take on a gross but engrossing fact of human life.

Competing with the Soviets Science, Technology, and the State in Cold War America【電子書籍】[ Audra J. Wolfe ]

|

A synthetic account of how science became a central weapon in the ideological Cold War.

Honorable Mention for the Forum for the History of Science in America Book Prize of the Forum for the History of Science in America

For most of the second half of the twentieth century, the United States and its allies competed with a hostile Soviet Union in almost every way imaginable except open military engagement. The Cold War placed two opposite conceptions of the good society before the uncommitted world and history itself, and science figured prominently in the picture. Competing with the Soviets offers a short, accessible introduction to the special role that science and technology played in maintaining state power during the Cold War, from the atomic bomb to the Human Genome Project.

The high-tech machinery of nuclear physics and the space race are at the center of this story, but Audra J. Wolfe also examines the surrogate battlefield of scientific achievement in such diverse fields as urban planning, biology, and economics; explains how defense-driven federal investments created vast laboratories and research programs; and shows how unfamiliar worries about national security and corrosive questions of loyalty crept into the supposedly objective scholarly enterprise.

Based on the assumption that scientists are participants in the culture in which they live, Competing with the Soviets looks beyond the debate about whether military influence distorted science in the Cold War. Scientists’ choices and opportunities have always been shaped by the ideological assumptions, political mandates, and social mores of their times. The idea that American science ever operated in a free zone outside of politics is, Wolfe argues, itself a legacy of the ideological Cold War that held up American science, and scientists, as beacons of freedom in contrast to their peers in the Soviet Union. Arranged chronologically and thematically, the book highlights how ideas about the appropriate relationships among science, scientists, and the state changed over time.

The Idea of Biblical Theology as a Science and as a Theological Discipline【電子書籍】[ Geerhardus Vos ]
|

Every discussion of what is to be understood by Biblical Theology ought to proceed from a clear understanding of what Theology is in general. Etymology, in many cases a safer guide than a priori constructions, tells us that Theology is knowledge concerning God, and this primitive definition is fully supported by encyclop?dic principles. Only when making Theology knowledge concerning God do we have the right to call it a separate science. Sciences are not formed at haphazard, but according to an objective principle of division. As in general science is bound by its object and must let itself be shaped by reality; so likewise the classification of sciences, the relation of the various members in the body of universal knowledge, has to follow the great lines by which God has mapped out the immense field of the universe. The title of a certain amount of knowledge to be called a separate science depends on its reference to such a separate and specific object as is marked off by these God-drawn lines of distinction. We speak of a science of Biology, because God has made the phenomena of life distinct from those of inorganic being. Now, from this point of view we must say that no science has a clearer title to separate existence than Theology. Between God as the Creator and all other things as created the distinction is absolute. There is not another such gulf within the universe. God, as distinct from the creature, is the only legitimate object of Theology.

Although dour in appearance and formidable in reputation, Friedrich Nietzsche was an ardent practitioner of the art of poetryーcalled in twelfth-century Provencal "the gay science." This volume, which Nietzsche referred to as "the most personal of all my books," features the largest collection of his poetry that he ever chose to publish. It also offers an extensive and sophisticated treatment of the philosophical themes and views most central to his thinking, as well as the ideas that proved most influential to later philosophers.
Dating from the era when Nietzsche was at the peak of his intellectual powers, most of this book was written just before Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and the rest of it five years later, after Beyond Good and Evil. Zarathustra makes his first appearance in these pages, along with the author's well-known proclamation of the death of Godーa concept to which much of the book is devotedーand his doctrine of the eternal recurrence. Christian Science versus Pantheism ー Christian Science versus Pantheism Enriched edition. A Philosophical Examination of Faith and Healing in the Late 19th Century【電子書籍】[ Mary Baker Eddy ]
|

In "Christian Science versus Pantheism," Mary Baker Eddy presents a compelling exploration of the essential distinctions between Christian Science and pantheistic beliefs. Through a rigorous blending of theology and metaphysical inquiry, Eddy articulates her understanding of God as a personal, omnipotent being, contrasting this with pantheism's conception of the divine as a more abstract, impersonal force. The work is notable for its clear, systematic structure, reflecting Eddy's conviction that spiritual truths can be understood through reasoned discourse. Her style is marked by eloquent prose, characterized by both fervent conviction and scholarly precision, which invites readers to engage deeply with her arguments. This book serves as both a polemic and a clarion call for an authentic understanding of Christian Science within the broader spiritual landscape of the late 19th century, a time of significant religious transformation in America. Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910), the founder of the Christian Science movement, was deeply influenced by her own spiritual experiences and the prevailing religious philosophies of her time. Her dedication to seeking spiritual truth stemmed from a personal struggle with illness and her eventual recovery through a profound spiritual awakening. This transformational journey led her to challenge prevailing notions of God and reality, ultimately culminating in her establishment of Christian Science as a distinct religious movement. Readers seeking a deeper understanding of the philosophical and theological underpinnings of Christian Science will find "Christian Science versus Pantheism" both enlightening and thought-provoking. Eddy's work not only delineates foundational beliefs that contrast sharply with pantheism but also invites readers to reflect on their own spiritual understandings. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in the intersections of faith, philosophy, and the evolving landscape of American spirituality. It remains distinctive in presenting a unified narrative of cognitive science as a field of inquiry in its own right. Thematically organized, Cognitive Science underscores the problems and solutions of cognitive science rather than more narrowly examining individually the subjects that contribute to it - psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, and so on. The generous use of examples, illustrations, and applications demonstrates how theory and experiment can be applied to unlock the mysteries of the human mind. Determined A Science of Life without Free Will【電子書籍】[ Robert M. Sapolsky ]

**The instant New York Times bestseller

“Excellent . . . Outstanding for its breadth of research, the liveliness of the writing, and the depth of humanity it conveys.” ?Wall Street Journal

One of our great behavioral scientists, the bestselling author of Behave, mounts a devastating scientific and philosophical case against free willーan argument with profound consequences**

Robert Sapolsky’s Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: we may not grasp exactly how nature and nurture create the physics and chemistry that cause all human behavior, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. In Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self who tells our biology what to do.

Determined offers a marvelous synthesis of what we know about consciousnessーthe tight weave between reason and emotion and between stimulus and response in the moment and over a life. One by one, Sapolsky takes out all the major arguments for free will, cutting a path through the thickets of chaos theory and quantum physics. But as Sapolsky acknowledges, it’s sometimes impossible to uncouple from our zeal to judge people, including ourselves. Determined applies this new understanding to some of our most essential questions around punishment, morality, and living well together. Most of all, Sapolsky argues that while accepting the reality about free will is monumentally difficult, it will make for a much more humane world.
