Wattles Trilogy: The Science of Getting Rich, The Science of Being Well & The Science of Being Great (Complete Edition)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "The Science of Getting Rich" was published in 1910 by the Elizabeth Towne Company. The book is still in print. It was a major inspiration for Rhonda Byrne's bestselling book and film The Secret (2006). In The Science of Getting Rich Wattles explains how can a person overcome mental barriers, and how creation, not competition, is the hidden key to wealth attraction "The Science of Being Well" is not a philosophical treatise, but a practical guide and handbook for those whose main goal is health.
You are surrounded by stickiness.

With every step you take, air molecules cling to you and slow you down; the effect is harder to ignore in water. When you hit the road, whether powered by pedal or engine, you rely on grip to keep you safe. The Post-it note and glue in your desk drawer. The non-stick pan on your stove. The fingerprints linked to your identity. The rumbling of the Earth deep beneath your feet, and the ice that transforms waterways each winter. All of these things are controlled by tiny forces that operate on and between surfaces, with friction playing the leading role.

In Sticky, Laurie Winkless explores how friction shapes both the manufactured and natural worlds, and describes how our understanding of surface science has given us an ability to manipulate stickiness, down to the level of a single atom. But this apparent success doesn't tell the whole story. Each time humanity has pushed the boundaries of science and engineering, we've discovered that friction still has a few surprises up its sleeve.

So do we really understand this force? Can we say with certainty that we know how a gecko climbs, what's behind our sense of touch, or why golf balls, boats and aircraft move as they do? Join Laurie as she seeks out the answers from experts scattered across the globe, uncovering a stack of scientific mysteries along the way.

Finalist for the 2023 AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books

The COVID-19 Pandemic A Global High-Tech Challenge at the Interface of Science, Politics, and Illusions【電子書籍】[ Klaus Rose ]
|

The COVID-19 Pandemic: A Global High-Tech Challenge at the Interface of Science, Politics, and Illusions discusses COVID-19 as the first pandemic in the Internet era and our current reality of continuous reports, news, and updates. Since its beginning, we were daily bombarded with news of what was happening around the world. There was no global political leadership. The United States was politically partially paralyzed. Russia and China hoped to gain diplomatic profile worldwide, but their vaccines are of limited efficacy, and trust in their clinical data is rightly low. The European Union did not order enough vaccines in time, but sued a large manufacturer for delivery delays. Now it is setting up yet another bureaucratic institution. At least the pharmaceutical or life science industry paved the way out, but is not enthusiastically praised for it. It would be too easy and superficial to blame mistakes of governments and leaders on stupidity. Idiocy exists, but we have to go deeper to understand how illusions and blind spots in today's common perception and science, inertia, arrogance, conflicts of interest, competition of individuals, and states and institutions for public recognition have contributed to a multitude of flawed assessments and direct mistakes. Healthcare professionals and anyone interested in an in-depth understanding of humankind's response to the COVID-19 challenge will not get around the key conclusions of this book. - Outlines key elements of modern civilization, public health, and drug and vaccine development on the background of the COVID-19 pandemic - Discusses the historical roots of separate drug approval of vaccines and drugs in administratively classified "children" (of whom many are bodily mature long before their 16th or 18th birthday), and why the belated approval of vaccines against COVID-19 in minors is not based on science, but on blurs and conflicts of interest - Outlines key elements we need to address to become better prepared for future global health challenges. In the first place, we do not need new institutions, but to overcome intellectual barriers and blind spots

The Evolution of Theology: an Anthropological Study Enriched edition. Essay #8 from "Science and Hebrew Tradition"【電子書籍】[ Thomas Henry Huxley ]
|

In "The Evolution of Theology: an Anthropological Study," Thomas Henry Huxley meticulously examines the evolving interplay between theology and human development through an anthropological lens. The work is characterized by Huxley's rigorous scientific approach, blending empirical observation with philosophical inquiry. He assesses religious belief as a product of evolutionary forces, arguing that theology has its origins in primitive human psychology and social structures. This paradigm shift reflects the broader Victorian context in which science began to challenge established religious norms, inviting readers to reconsider the foundations of belief in light of evolutionary theory. Huxley, often hailed as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his staunch defense of natural selection, draws upon his extensive background in biology and anthropology to inform this exploration. His experiences in the scientific community and his staunch advocacy for rational thought amid the tumult of religious dogma led him to confront the implications of evolution on theology. Huxley's intellectual journey reveals much about the tension between faith and science during the 19th century, making his insights profoundly relevant. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in the intersection of science and religion, as well as those exploring the anthropological underpinnings of belief systems. Huxley's compelling argumentation encourages reflection on how our understanding of the divine has evolved, fostering a deeper appreciation for the complexities of human thought.
In "Philosophical Letters: or, Modest Reflections upon some Opinions in Natural Philosophy," Duchess of Margaret Cavendish Newcastle presents a fascinating exploration of early modern scientific thought through a series of letters that blend personal reflection with rigorous philosophical inquiry. Known for her innovative and often provocative style, Cavendish weaves her arguments with vivid imagery and a conversational tone, challenging the prevailing views of her contemporaries. Positioned at the intersection of the early feminist movement and burgeoning natural philosophy, her work engages with key topics such as atomism, the nature of matter, and the role of women in science, revealing her unique perspective as a woman innovator in a predominantly male sphere of intellectual discourse. The Science of Weird Shit Why Our Minds Conjure the Paranormal【電子書籍】[ Chris French ]

An accessible and gratifying introduction to the world of paranormal beliefs and bizarre experiences.

Ghostly encounters, alien abduction, reincarnation, talking to the dead, UFO sightings, inexplicable coincidences, out-of-body and near-death experiences. Are these legitimate phenomena? If not, then how should we go about understanding them? In this fascinating book, Chris French investigates paranormal claims to discover what lurks behind this “weird shit.” French provides authoritative evidence-based explanations for a wide range of superficially mysterious phenomena, and then goes further to draw out lessons with wider applications to many other aspects of modern society where critical thinking is urgently needed.

Using academic, comprehensive, logical, and, at times, mathematical approaches, The Science of Weird Shit convincingly debunks ESP, communicating with the dead, and alien abduction claims, among other phenomena. All the while, however, French maintains that our belief in such phenomena is neither ridiculous nor trivial; if anything, such claims can tell us a great deal about the human mind if we pay them the attention they are due. Filled with light-bulb moments and a healthy dose of levity, The Science of Weird Shit is a clever, memorable, and gratifying read you won’t soon forget.

Cosmology The Science of the Universe【電子書籍】[ Edward Harrison ]
|

Cosmology: The Science of the Universe is an introduction to past and present cosmological theory. For much of the world's history, cosmological thought was formulated in religious or philosophical language and was thus theological or metaphysical in nature. However, cosmological speculation and theory is now a science in which the empirical discoveries of the astronomer, theoretical physicist, and biologist are woven into intricate models that attempt to account for the universe as a whole. Professor Harrison draws on the discoveries and speculations of these scientists to provide a comprehensive survey of mankind's current understanding of the universe and its history. Tracing the rise of the scientific method, the major aim of this book is to provide an elementary understanding of the physical universe of modern times. This second edition, originally published in 2000, has received high praise for Harrison's wide-ranging insights into the universe at large.

The New Science of the Enchanted Universe An Anthropology of Most of Humanity【電子書籍】[ Marshall Sahlins ]
|

One of the world’s preeminent cultural anthropologists leaves a last work that fundamentally reconfigures how we study most other cultures

From the perspective of Western modernity, humanity inhabits a disenchanted cosmos. Gods, spirits, and ancestors have left us for a transcendent beyond, no longer living in our midst and being involved in all matters of everyday life from the trivial to the dire. Yet the vast majority of cultures throughout human history treat spirits as very real persons, members of a cosmic society who interact with humans and control their fate. In most cultures, even today, people are but a small part of an enchanted universe misconstrued by the transcendent categories of “religion” and the “supernatural.” The New Science of the Enchanted Universe shows how anthropologists and other social scientists must rethink these cultures of immanence and study them by their own lights.

In this, his last, revelatory book, Marshall Sahlins announces a new method and sets an exciting agenda for the field. He takes readers around the world, from Inuit of the Arctic Circle to pastoral Dinka of East Africa, from Arawet? swidden gardeners of Amazonia to Trobriand Island horticulturalists. In the process, Sahlins sheds new light on classical and contemporary ethnographies that describe these cultures of immanence and reveals how even the apparently mundane, all-too-human spheres of “economics” and “politics” emerge as people negotiate with, and ultimately usurp, the powers of the gods.

The New Science of the Enchanted Universe offers a road map for a new practice of anthropology that takes seriously the enchanted universe and its transformations from ancient Mesopotamia to contemporary America.

The Origin of the World According to Revelation and Science Exploring the Origins: Bridging Science and Revelation【電子書籍】[ John William Sir Dawson ]

|

In his pivotal work, "The Origin of the World According to Revelation and Science," John William Sir Dawson explores the intricate relationship between scientific inquiry and theological doctrine. Employing a unique blend of empiricism and biblical exegesis, Dawson navigates the complexities of creation, positing that both revelation and scientific discovery reveal the truth of the universe's origins. His literary style is characterized by eloquent prose and a logically structured argument, making profound connections between contemporary scientific theories, such as geology and biology, with Scripture, thus situating his work within the broader discourse of the 19th-century science-religion dialogue. Dawson, a prominent geologist and a passionate advocate for the reconciliation of faith and science, was influenced by the burgeoning scientific advancements of his time. His deep understanding of geology and unwavering commitment to Christian doctrine led him to scrutinize the perceived conflict between these two realms. As the principal of McGill University and a respected figure in both scientific and theological circles, Dawson's perspectives reflect a harmonious view that seeks to uplift both disciplines, rather than render them antagonistic. This book is highly recommended for readers intrigued by the intersections of science and faith. Dawson's compelling argumentation will not only challenge preconceptions but also encourage thoughtful reflection on how these realms can coexist. It serves as an essential read for scholars, students, and interested laypeople who wish to delve deeper into the ongoing conversation about the origins of life and the universe.

Rainy Brain, Sunny Brain The New Science of Optimism and Pessimism【電子書籍】[ Elaine Fox ]
|

Are you optimistic or pessimistic? Glass half-full or half-empty? Do you look on the bright side or turn towards the dark? These are easy questions for most of us to answer, because our personality types are hard-wired into our brains. As pioneering psychologist and neuroscientist Elaine Fox has discovered, our outlook on life reflects our primal inclination to seek pleasure or avoid dangerーinclinations that, in many people, are healthily balanced. But when our 'fear brain' or 'pleasure brain' is too strong, the results can be disastrous, as those of us suffering from debilitating shyness, addiction, depression, or anxiety know all too well.

Luckily, anyone suffering from these afflictions has reason to hope. Stunning breakthroughs in neuroscience show that our brains are more malleable than we ever imagined. In Rainy Brain, Sunny Brain, Fox describes a range of techniquesーfrom traditional cognitive behavioural therapy to innovative cognitive bias retraining exercisesーthat can actually alter our brains’ circuitry, strengthening specific thought processes by exercising the neural systems that control them. The implications are enormous: lifelong pessimists can train themselves to think positively and find happiness, while pleasure-seekers inclined toward risky or destructive behavior can take control of their lives.

Drawing on her own cutting-edge research, Fox shows how we can retrain our brains to brighten our lives and learn to flourish. With keen insights into how genes, life experiences and cognitive processes interleave together to make us who we are, Rainy Brain, Sunny Brain revolutionises our basic concept of individuality. We learn that we can influence our own personalities, and that our lives are only as 'sunny' or as 'rainy' as we allow them to be.

Eternal Self The Tantra Science of Consciousness【電子書籍】[ Phil Nuernberger ]
|

Eternal Self is a practical explanation of the power of Tantra Yoga, an introspective, spiritual science of Consciousness, to create a life of balance, harmony and joy. This book is the product of 50 years of practice, study, and teaching the science of Tantra Yoga, both in the United States and the Himalaya Mountains in Nepal and Northern India. While religion, philosophy, and even science tells you WHAT you should do to achieve this, Tantra Yoga shows you HOW. Through simple tools, such as breathing, concentration, meditation, and other practices, we expand our normally limited awareness to the spiritual-Self, the spiritual core of Consciousness within each of us. Eternal Self begins by exploring the mystery of Consciousness. It then shows how Tantra science shares the fundamental requirements of all science: experimentation, replication and verification. However Tantra explores reality, and in particular Consciousness, through direct introspective experience rather than analyzing material phenomenon. Yoga science understood both mind and matter as energetic structures thousands of years before modern quantum physics. Although Tantra Yoga is a spiritual science, it has more in common with modern science than with organized religion. Eternal Self outlines how each of us participates in this creative process although in contracted, limited ways. This is accomplished through the energetic body that is the underlying reality of our physical body, including the brain. The book shows that through the chakras and subtle senses we experience the energetic quantum reality as a see/touch objective reality. Through systematic meditative practices, we become conscious of these powerful energy centers and utilize them for personal and spiritual growth. The finest instrument we have for material and spiritual success is our mind, but it also prevents us from experiencing the spiritual-Self. Eternal Self presents a unique analysis of the mind as an energetic field consisting of thought-constructs as energy patterns. It maps the relationship of the spiritual-Self (soul) to the energetic Subtle Body involving the chakras and subtle senses, and the physical body and the objective reality. It recognizes that each individual mind is part of a greater energetic field consisting of all human thought that Carl Jung called the "Collective Unconscious." Eternal Self describes the four functions of the mind and the power of each to create knowledge. Our single most important personal skill is the ability to focus attention, to concentrate. Eternal Self clarifies the nature of attention/concentration and its impact on the mind. It describes the power of curiosity to intensify our focus, and the great damage that fear does to all levels of the mind and the ability to focus. Tantra science provides the method of transcendence, or mystical experience, but its practical utility and value lies in its transformational power to enhance intelligence, substantially increase emotional intelligence, and lead to spiritual realization. Eternal Self speaks to the fact that all organizations (political, economic, religious, social) are only as healthy and effective as the egos that lead them. The introspective tools and methods of Tantra science gently dissolve the ego issues that are the sources of imbalance, suffering and dysfunction in ourselves, and thus in our organizations, cultures, and nations. It provides a prescription to develop spiritual humanism through education by utilizing the powerful tools of concentration, stillness, and introspection provided by Tantra and other meditative traditions.

The Idea of Biblical Theology as a Science and as a Theological Discipline【電子書籍】[ Geerhardus Vos ]
|

Every discussion of what is to be understood by Biblical Theology ought to proceed from a clear understanding of what Theology is in general. Etymology, in many cases a safer guide than a priori constructions, tells us that Theology is knowledge concerning God, and this primitive definition is fully supported by encyclop?dic principles. Only when making Theology knowledge concerning God do we have the right to call it a separate science. Sciences are not formed at haphazard, but according to an objective principle of division. As in general science is bound by its object and must let itself be shaped by reality; so likewise the classification of sciences, the relation of the various members in the body of universal knowledge, has to follow the great lines by which God has mapped out the immense field of the universe. The title of a certain amount of knowledge to be called a separate science depends on its reference to such a separate and specific object as is marked off by these God-drawn lines of distinction. We speak of a science of Biology, because God has made the phenomena of life distinct from those of inorganic being. Now, from this point of view we must say that no science has a clearer title to separate existence than Theology. Between God as the Creator and all other things as created the distinction is absolute. There is not another such gulf within the universe. God, as distinct from the creature, is the only legitimate object of Theology.
