Principles of nature A development of the morals causes of happiness and misery among the human species【電子書籍】[ Elihu Palmer ]

In "Principles of Nature," Elihu Palmer presents a compelling examination of the Natural Philosophy that underpins his worldview. With a blend of scientific inquiry and philosophical reflection, Palmer articulates a vision of nature that underscores the interconnectedness of all existence. Written in a clear yet profound prose style characteristic of Enlightenment thinkers, this work navigates complex ideas about ethics, religion, and the nature of reality, situating itself within the intellectual currents of the early 19th century. Palmer'??s synthesis of scientific and spiritual beliefs captures the zeitgeist of an era in which traditional dogmas were being questioned and re-evaluated. Elihu Palmer was a prominent figure in the early American freethought movement, whose advocacy for reason and naturalistic philosophy stemmed from his own experiences in religious reform and skepticism. His background as a teacher and a scholar of both theology and science provided him with a unique lens through which he could critique the doctrines of organized religion and promote a more rational understanding of existence. This dual perspective undoubtedly influenced his writing, allowing him to weave a narrative that is both intellectually rigorous and accessible to the educated reader. "Principles of Nature" is recommended for anyone interested in the intersection of philosophy, science, and spirituality. Palmer'??s work challenges readers to reassess preconceived notions about morality and existence, making it essential for those seeking a deeper understanding of Enlightenment thought and its continuing relevance in contemporary discourse. This text not only engages the mind but also invites a reevaluation of one'??s relationship with nature and the universe.

Chimpanzee Lessons from our Sister Species【電子書籍】[ Kevin D. Hunt ]

The chimpanzee is one of our planet's best-loved and most instantly recognisable animals. Splitting from the human lineage between four and six million years ago, it is (along with its cousin, the bonobo) our closest living relative, sharing around 94% of our DNA. First encountered by Westerners in the seventeenth century, virtually nothing was known about chimpanzees in their natural environment until 1960, when Jane Goodall travelled to Gombe to live and work with them. Accessibly written, yet fully referenced and uncompromising in its accuracy and comprehensiveness, this book encapsulates everything we currently know about chimpanzees: from their discovery and why we study them, to their anatomy, physiology, genetics and culture. The text is beautifully illustrated and infused with examples and anecdotes drawn from the author's thirty years of primate observation, making this a perfect resource for students of biological anthropology and primatology as well as non-specialists interested in chimpanzees.

Climate Ghosts Migratory Species in the Anthropocene【電子書籍】[ Nancy Langston ]

Climate Ghosts deals with the important issue of climate change and human impact on three species: woodland caribou, common loons, and lake sturgeon.

Environmental historian Nancy Langston explores three “ghost species” in the Great Lakes watershedーwoodland caribou, common loons, and lake sturgeon. Ghost species are those that have not gone completely extinct, although they may be extirpated from a particular area. Their traces are still present, whether in DNA, in small fragmented populations, in lone individuals roaming a desolate landscape in search of a mate. We can still restore them if we make the hard choices necessary for them to survive. In this meticulously researched book, Langston delves into how climate change and human impact affected these now ghost species. Climate Ghosts covers one of the key issues of our time.

Darwin's Origin of Species A Biography【電子書籍】[ Janet Browne ]

No book has changed our understanding of ourselves more than Darwin's Origin of Species. It caused a sensation on its first day of publication in 1859 and went on to become an international bestseller. The idea that living things gradually evolve through natural selection profoundly shocked its Victorian readers, calling into question what had been for many the unshakeable belief that there was a Creator.

In this book, Janet Browne, Charles Darwin's foremost biographer, shows why Darwin's Origin of Species can fairly claim to be the greatest science book ever published. She describes the genesis of Darwin's theories, explains how they were initially received and examines why they remain so contentious today. Her book is a marvellously readable account of the work that altered forever our knowledge of what it is to be human.

On the Genesis of Species Challenging Evolutionary Theories with Scholarly Insights and Comparative Anatomy in Late 19th Century Science【電子書籍】[ St. George Jackson Mivart ]

In "On the Genesis of Species," St. George Jackson Mivart offers a critical examination of Darwinian evolution while introducing his own philosophical perspectives on the origins of species. Mivart employs a meticulous literary style that combines rigorous scientific inquiry with eloquent prose, engaging readers in a dialogue that challenges the prevailing ideas of natural selection. Set against the backdrop of Victorian England, a period marked by intense debates between science and religion, Mivart's work not only examines biological variations but also delves into the metaphysical implications of Darwin'??s theories, ultimately advocating for a more teleological understanding of life. St. George Jackson Mivart was an esteemed biologist, philosopher, and devout Catholic whose background deeply influenced his writing. Having initially been an admirer of Darwin, Mivart'??s gradual disillusionment with aspects of evolutionary theory led him to seek alternative explanations that harmonized science with his faith. His scholarly work in anatomy and his expertise in natural history provided a robust foundation for his arguments, positioning him as a significant thinker in the evolutionary discourse of his time. "On the Genesis of Species" is essential reading for those interested in the intersection of science, philosophy, and theology. Mivart'??s unique perspective invites readers to reconsider the implications of evolution, making this book an invaluable contribution to ongoing discussions about the origins of life and the role of intelligent design.

Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters【電子書籍】[ Matt Ridley ]

The most important investigation of genetic science since The Selfish Gene, from the author of the critically acclaimed and best-selling The Red Queen and The Origins of Virtue.

The genome is our 100,000 or so genes. The genome is the collective recipe for the building and running of the human body. These 100,000 genes are sited across 23 pairs of chromosomes. Genome, a book of about 100,000 words, is divided into 23 chapters, a chapter for each chromosome. The first chromosome, for example, contains our oldest genes, genes which we have in common with plants.

By looking at our genes we can see the story of our evolution, what makes us individual, how our sexuality is determined, how we acquire language, why we are vunerable to certain diseases, how mind has arisen. Genome also argues for the genetic foundations of free will. While many believe that genetics proves biological determinism, Ridley will show that in fact free will is itself in the genes. Everything that makes us human can be read in our genes. Early in the next century we will have determined the function of every one of these 100,000 genes.

But what does it mean? Matt Ridley’s Genome is the book that explains it all: what it is, how it works, and what it portends for the future

Arguably the most significant scientific discovery of the new century, the mapping of the twenty-three pairs of chromosomes that make up the human genome raises almost as many questions as it answers. Questions that will profoundly impact the way we think about disease, about longevity, and about free will. Questions that will affect the rest of your life.

Genome offers extraordinary insight into the ramifications of this incredible breakthrough. By picking one newly discovered gene from each pair of chromosomes and telling its story, Matt Ridley recounts the history of our species and its ancestors from the dawn of life to the brink of future medicine. From Huntington's disease to cancer, from the applications of gene therapy to the horrors of eugenics, Ridley probes the scientific, philosophical, and moral issues arising as a result of the mapping of the genome. Drawing on his breakthrough research in comparative neuroscience, Terrence Deacon offers a wealth of insights into the significance of symbolic thinking: from the co-evolutionary exchange between language and brains over two million years of hominid evolution to the ethical repercussions that followed man's newfound access to other people's thoughts and emotions.

Informing these insights is a new understanding of how Darwinian processes underlie the brain's development and function as well as its evolution. In contrast to much contemporary neuroscience that treats the brain as no more or less than a computer, Deacon provides a new clarity of vision into the mechanism of mind. It injects a renewed sense of adventure into the experience of being human.

The Origin of Species is the magnum opus of natural scientist Charles Darwin. In the book Darwin presents the theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through the process of natural selection. The book goes on to present a body of evidence for the hypothesis that the diversity of life in this way arose by common descent through a branching pattern of evolution. Darwin had gathered much of his evidence for the book on the Beagle expedition in the 1830s to among other places the Gal?pagos Islands.

The Secret of Our Success How Culture Is Driving Human Evolution, Domesticating Our Species, and Making Us Smarter【電子書籍】[ Joseph Henrich ]

How our collective intelligence has helped us to evolve and prosper

Humans are a puzzling species. On the one hand, we struggle to survive on our own in the wild, often failing to overcome even basic challenges, like obtaining food, building shelters, or avoiding predators. On the other hand, human groups have produced ingenious technologies, sophisticated languages, and complex institutions that have permitted us to successfully expand into a vast range of diverse environments. What has enabled us to dominate the globe, more than any other species, while remaining virtually helpless as lone individuals? This book shows that the secret of our success lies not in our innate intelligence, but in our collective brainsーon the ability of human groups to socially interconnect and learn from one another over generations.

Drawing insights from lost European explorers, clever chimpanzees, mobile hunter-gatherers, neuroscientific findings, ancient bones, and the human genome, Joseph Henrich demonstrates how our collective brains have propelled our species' genetic evolution and shaped our biology. Our early capacities for learning from others produced many cultural innovations, such as fire, cooking, water containers, plant knowledge, and projectile weapons, which in turn drove the expansion of our brains and altered our physiology, anatomy, and psychology in crucial ways. Later on, some collective brains generated and recombined powerful concepts, such as the lever, wheel, screw, and writing, while also creating the institutions that continue to alter our motivations and perceptions. Henrich shows how our genetics and biology are inextricably interwoven with cultural evolution, and how culture-gene interactions launched our species on an extraordinary evolutionary trajectory.

Tracking clues from our ancient past to the present, The Secret of Our Success explores how the evolution of both our cultural and social natures produce a collective intelligence that explains both our species' immense success and the origins of human uniqueness.

Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937) commonly known as H. C. McNeile or Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. After the war McNeile left the army and continued writing, although he changed from war stories to thrillers. In 1920 he published Bulldog Drummond, whose eponymous hero became his best-known creation. The character was based on McNeile himself, on his friend Gerard Fairlie and on English gentlemen generally. Drummond is a First World War veteran, brutalised by his experiences in the trenches and bored with his post-war lifestyle. He publishes an advertisement looking for adventure, and soon finds himself embroiled in a series of exploits, many of which involve Carl Petersonーwho becomes his nemesisーand Peterson's mistress, the femme fatale Irma. McNeile interspersed his Drummond work with other detective novels and story collections that included two characters who appeared as protagonists in their own works, Jim Maitland and Ronald Standish. H. C. McNeile thrillers are a continuation of his war stories, with upper class Englishmen defending England from foreigners plotting against it.
