What Are You Looking At? The Surprising, Shocking, and Sometimes Strange Story of 150 Years of Modern Art【電子書籍】[ Will Gompertz ]

For skeptics, art lovers, and the millions of us who visit art galleries every yearーand are confusedーWhat Are You Looking At? by former director of London’s Tate Gallery Will Gompertz is a wonderfully lively, accessible narrative history of Modern Art, from Impressionism to the present day.

What is modern art? Who started it? Why do we either love it or loathe it? And why is it such big money? Join BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz on a dazzling tour that will change the way you look at modern art forever. From Monet's water lilies to Van Gogh's sunflowers, from Warhol's soup cans to Hirst's pickled shark, hear the stories behind the masterpieces, meet the artists as they really were, and discover the real point of modern art.

You will learn: not all conceptual art is bollocks; Picasso is king (but C?zanne is better); Pollock is no drip; Dali painted with his moustache; a urinal changed the course of art; why your 5-year-old really couldn't do it. Refreshing, irreverent and always straightforward, What Are You Looking At? cuts through the pretentious art speak and asks all the basic questions that you were too afraid to ask. Your next trip to the art gallery is going to be a little less intimidating and a lot more interesting.

With his offbeat humor, down-to-earth storytelling, and flair for odd details that spark insights, Will Gompertz is the perfect tour guide for modern art. His book doesn’t tell us if a work of art is good; it gives us the knowledge to decide for ourselves.

And now the time has come to say good-bye; and good-byes are always so sad that it is much better when we do not know that we have got to say them. It is so long since Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood came out to greet you in the 'Blue Fairy Book,' that some of you who wore pigtails or sailor suits in those days have little boys and girls of your own to read the stories to now, and a few may even have little baby grandchildren. Since the first giants and enchanted princes and ill-treated step-daughters made friends with you, a whole new world of wheels and wings and sharp-voiced bells has been thrown open, and children have toy motors and aeroplanes which take up all their thoughts and time. Fate Twister The Strange Story Of Wayne Gamm【電子書籍】[ Owen Jones ]

Wayne Gamm was born on a remote sheep farm on a mountainside in north Wales on a stormy night in June. The midwife and even the family itself wanted him to be delivered in hospital because he was going to be large and he was Gwynedd's first baby, but for reason's that will become apparent, his mother and grandmother, Rhiannon, thought that might be very dangerous.

All of Gwynedd's family had been born on the farm, Yr Ardd Y Ddraig, The Dragon's Garden, for as far back as they knew - a family bible put that at 324 years - and they were all either witches or warlocks.

The problem with the males though was that they were 'lose cannons', meaning they had difficulty focusing their powers. Wayne followed suit, although all witch babies have to learn self-control, even the females.

Gwynedd and Rhiannon had high hopes that Wayne would be more capable than his male antecedents, but it turned out that he had such great power, and so little control, that even his own family were wary of him.

He was feared and shunned at school by teachers and fellow-students alike because they knew from experience, that things could get a little weird when Wayne was around.

The more astute noticed that when he was happy, good things happened, but when he was upset, anything could befall anyone. Luckily, Wayne was a happy person by nature, but this made it worse for him, because he didn't want to hurt people, so he refused to accept that he was causing the disruptions.
They called him Fate Twister behind his back.

Wayne grew up dejected, rejected, lonely and in denial.

This is the story of the early life of Wayne Gamm, Fate Twister.

The Strange Story Book【電子書籍】[ Mrs. Andrew Lang ]

Now as this is the very last book of all this series that began in the long long ago, perhaps you may like to hear something of the man who thought over every one of the twenty-five, for fear lest a story should creep in which he did not wish his little boys and girls to read. He was born when nobody thought of travelling in anything but a trainーa very slow oneーor a steamer. It took a great deal of persuasion to induce him later to get into a motor and he had not the slightest desire to go up in an aeroplaneーor to possess a telephone. Somebody once told him of a little boy who, after giving a thrilling account at luncheon of how Randolph had taken Edinburgh Castle, had expressed a desire to go out and see the Museum; 'I like old things better than new,' said the child! 'I wish I knew that little boy,' observed the man. 'He would just suit me.' And that was true, for he too loved great deeds of battle and adventure as well as the curious carved and painted fragments guarded in museums which show that the lives described by Homer and the other old poets were not tales made up by them to amuse tired crowds gathered round a hall fire, but were realーreal as our lives now, and much more beautiful and splendid. All beasts were his friends, just because they were beasts, unless they had been very badly brought up. He never could resist a cat, and cats, like beggars, tell each other these things and profit by them. A cat knew quite well that it had only to go on sitting for a few days outside the window where the man was writing, and that if it began to snow or even to rain, the window would be pushed up and the cat would spend the rest of its days stretched in front of the fire, with a saucer of milk beside it, and fish for every meal. But life with cats was not all peace, and once a terrible thing hap-pened when Dickon-draw-the-blade was the Puss in Possession. His master was passing through London on the way to take a journey to some beautiful old walled towns in the south of France where the English fought in the Hundred Years War, and he meant to spend a few weeks in the country along the Loire which is bound up with the memory of Joan of Arc. Unluckily, the night after he arrived from Scotland Dickon went out for a walk on the high trellis behind the house, and once there did not know how to get down again. Of course it was quite easy, and there were ropes of Virginia creeper to help, but Dickon lost his presence of mind, and instead of doing anything sensible only stood and shrieked, while his master got ladders and steps and clambered about in the dark and in the cold, till he put Dickon on the ground again. Then Dickon's master went to bed, but woke up so ill that he was obliged to do without the old towns, and go when he was better to a horrid place called Cannes, all dust and tea-parties.

Back from the Deep The Strange Story of the Sister Subs 'Squalus' and 'Sculpin'【電子書籍】[ Carl P Lavo Jr. ]

This epic World War II saga follows the USS Squalus and Sculpin as they play out their dramatic destinies in the Pacific. The author, a seasoned journalist, re-creates their entire perilous journey. The Squalus sank during a test dive in 1939, but thirty-three trapped crewmen were saved thanks to the revolutionary use of the McCann diving bell. The Sculpin's role in that historic rescue is just the first of many incongruous twists of fate that brought the two subs together after the Squalus was salvaged and rechristened the Sailfish.

Carl LaVO skillfully weaves together the tragic loss of the Sculpin to a Japanese destroyer with the frenetic wrath of its sister sub. Their intertwined fates come to an eerie climax as the Sailfish unleashes a ten-hour attack on the Japanese aircraft carrier Chuyo amid a raging typhoon, unwittingly killing twenty-two of the forty-three Americans captured from the sunken Sculpin. The saga comes to a close with a moving description of the surviving Sculpin crewmen as they face incredible hardship, torture, and disease as POWs in Japan. This book is certain to instill a renewed appreciation for the intrepid men and stealthy boats that were the soul of the Pacific campaign's silent service.

M?ric J?kay de ?sva was born on the 18th February 1825 in Kom?rom, then in the Kingdom of Hungary but now part of Slovakia.

Due to his timid and delicate constitution he was educated at home until the age of 10 and then sent away to complete his studies at the Calvinist college at P?pa.

At 12 his father died, and he was pushed to honour him by replicating his career as a lawyer. He studied hard and completed the curriculum at Kecskem?t and Pest. He won his first case as a newly graduated lawyer.

But he found a career in law to be dull and, encouraged by the positive reaction to his first play, he moved to Pest in 1845. There he published, first in a newspaper, and then as a novel ‘H?tk?znapok’ (‘Working Days’). It was acclaimed as a masterpiece. To add to his promise he was appointed as the editor of ?letk?pek, the leading Hungarian journal.

In 1848 he married the actress, R?za Laborfalvi. That same year Europe was awash with revolutions and J?kai, a moderate Liberal, enthusiastically supported the nationalist cause and its decision to depose the Habsburg dynasty. The attempt failed.

He was now classed as a political suspect and threw himself into his literary career, writing dozens of novels, many of them masterpieces, stories, essays and the like. In total he wrote several hundred volumes, many of them in the local Magyar language which helped arrest its declining relevance in society.

By 1867 the political temperature had cooled, and he entered parliament as well as becoming the editor a government journal he had founded. His skills were much admired and helped the government navigate through several difficult matters.

His wife died in 1886 but although grief-stricken he continued to work and to write.

In 1897 the king appointed him a member of the upper house. Two years later he caused a minor scandal by marrying the young 20-year-old actress, Bella Nagy. At the time he was 74.

M?r J?kai died in Budapest on the 5th May 1904. Teuane (pronounced with soft e and a), Te-u-ane Ann Tibbo was born in Vaimea, Samoa in 1895. A rumour circulated in Samoa that she was the secret child of famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who lived in Samoa from 1889 until his death in 1894. Linda Herrick Arts editor, of the New Zealand Herald in her article, ーThe Return of the Matriarch dated April 26th 2002 quoted the Stevenson connection to Teuanes family in a retrospective article that celebrates the art and mysterious life of Teuane Tibbo, who started painting at the age of 69. Teuane lived through the period when Germany, the United States of America and Britain occupied her country. Teuane was abducted by a German plantation owner in Samoa, when she was 15 years old. She was forced to marry him by her parents. After a few years of marriage Teuane shot him in the left buttock. He died of gangrene poisoning a week later. Teuane went to prison for a short period. On her release she moved to Suva, the capital of the Fiji Islands. In Suva she met an English naval officer named Lt. Commander Edward Victor Tibbo RN. They moved to Samoa where they married. Teuane was a proud person. She was a descendant of high-born ancestors of the 3000 year old Independent Kingdom of Samoa. Edward and Teuane sailed from Fiji to New Zealand in 1946 with their mature family to live in Auckland, the capital of New Zealand. After an exciting and socially satisfying life they retired. At the age of 69 Teuane decided she would take up a hobby when she saw her artist daughters paintings, and asked her daughter if she could show her how to paint. Two months later she had painted a collection of twenty three large colourful works. Her daughter contacted an artist, Pat Hanly who knew Barry Lett, a well-known Auckland art dealer, he arranged an exhibition of Teuanes works in his gallery. The public and media made her famous overnight. He became her dealer over her 12 year career, during which she painted over 100 paintings. Curators, dealers and collectors from Germany, USA, Japan, England, Australia and New Zealand bought her controversial paintings. Teuanes paintings were nearly lost to posterity. Her husband Edward didnt like the paintings. He angrily threatened to destroy her works saying, “Ill burn the bloody lot… they are na?ve!” Teuane Anne Tibbo passed away in her sleep on 22nd May 1984. She was admired, and respected by her fellow artists, and loved by her six children, her grand children, great grandchildren and friends.

The Nazi S?ance The Strange Story of the Jewish Psychic in Hitler's Circle【電子書籍】[ Arthur J. Magida ]

World War I left Berlin, and all of Germany, devastated. Charlatans and demagogues eagerly exploited the desperate crowds. Fascination with the occult was everywhere ? in private s?ances, personalized psychic readings, communions with the dead ? as people struggled to escape the grim reality of their lives. In the early 1930s, the most famous mentalist in the German capital was Erik Jan Hanussen, a Jewish mind reader originally from Vienna who became so popular in Berlin that he rubbed elbows with high ranking Nazis, became close with top Storm Troopers, and even advised Hitler.

Called "Europe's Greatest Oracle Since Nostradamus," Hanussen assumed he could manipulate some of the more incendiary personalities of his time just as he had manipulated his fans. He turned his occult newspaper in Berlin into a Nazi propaganda paper, personally assured Hitler that the stars were aligned in his favor, and predicted the infamous Reichstag Fire that would solidify the Nazis' grip on Germany.

Seasoned with ruminations about wonder and magic (and explanations of Hanussen's tricks), The Nazi S?ance is a disturbing journey into a Germany as it descends into madnessーaided by a "clairvoyant" Jew oblivious to the savagery of men who pursued a Reich they fantasized would last 1,000 years.

This Dog Barking The Strange Story of U.G.

'A journey to the end of thought. An empty box within an empty box. There is no truth. The robot is dreaming.'
This Dog Barking chronicles the story of U.G. Krishnamurti, the Cosmic Naxalite, from his troubled childhood to his disillusionment with many of the leading spiritual teachers of the twentieth century and his catastrophic personal life. In 1967, UG underwent a series of biological mutations that left him in the 'natural state' - functioning without the interference of thought. With no fixed address, no followers and no organization, UG spent the next thirty years travelling the world with an uncompromising message: that 'mind is a myth' and the human condition should be demystified and de-psychologized and viewed in purely physiological terms.Candid and clear-eyed, this is a profoundly thought-provoking biography of one of the most radical philosophers of our age.

The Death Ship, A Strange Story, Vol.3 (of 3)【電子書籍】[ William Clark Russell ]

Excerpt: "I had passed from the deck, where I slept, to the cabin in too great a hurry to notice the weather. Now, reaching the poop, I stood a moment or two to look around, being in my way as concerned about the direction of the wind as Vanderdecken himself. It still blew fresh, but the heavens lay open among the clouds that had thickened their bulk into great drooping shining bosoms, as though indeed the crystalline blue under which they sailed in solemn procession[2] mirrored the swelling brows of mighty snow-covered mountains. The sea ran in a very dark shade of azure, and offered a most glorious surface of colours with the heave of its violet hills bearing silver and pearly streakings of sunshine and foam upon their buoyant floating slopes, and the jewelled and living masses of froth which flashed from their heights and stormed into their valleys as they raced before the wind which chased them with noisy whistlings and notes as of bugles. The Death Ship was close-hauledーwhen was the day to come when I should find her with her yards squared?ーbut on the larboard tack, so that they must have put the ship about since midnight; and the sun standing almost over the mizzen topsail yard-arm showed me that we were doing some westing, for which I could have fallen on my knees and thanked God."

Some of My Best Friends Are Black The Strange Story of Integration in America【電子書籍】[ Tanner Colby ]

An irreverent, yet powerful exploration of race relations by the New York Times-bestselling author of The Chris Farley Show

Frank, funny, and incisive, Some of My Best Friends Are Black offers a profoundly honest portrait of race in America. In a book that is part reportage, part history, part social commentary, Tanner Colby explores why the civil rights movement ultimately produced such little true integration in schools, neighborhoods, offices, and churchesーthe very places where social change needed to unfold. Weaving together the personal, intimate stories of everyday peopleーblack and whiteーColby reveals the strange, sordid history of what was supposed to be the end of Jim Crow, but turned out to be more of the same with no name. He shows us how far we have come in our journey to leave mistrust and anger behindーand how far all of us have left to go.
