The Growth of a Soul【電子書籍】[ August Strindberg ]
|

In "The Growth of a Soul," August Strindberg delves into the intricate tapestry of human experience, presenting a profound exploration of spiritual and personal evolution. Written in a semi-autobiographical style, the narrative intertwines psychoanalytical insights with a vivid portrayal of late 19th-century European society. Strindberg's prose embodies a raw intensity, manifesting his inner conflicts and existential musings through rich symbolism and evocative imagery, positioning the work within the literary context of modernist exploration and realism that challenged conventional narratives of his time. August Strindberg, a pioneering figure in both drama and literature, was deeply influenced by his tumultuous personal life, including his struggles with mental health, complex relationships, and societal alienation. His experiences in various artistic circles and his travels throughout Europe provided a fertile ground for the philosophical inquiries presented in this work. Strindberg's challenges with acceptance and identity are mirrored in the protagonist's journey, offering a glimpse into the author's own psyche and the broader human condition. I highly recommend "The Growth of a Soul" to readers who seek a profound reflection on the journey of self-discovery and the complexities of the human spirit. Strindberg's masterful storytelling and his exploration of the intertwining of personal psyche with societal influence make this book a timeless piece that resonates with those interested in existential literature and psychological drama.

The Confession of a Fool【電子書籍】[ August Strindberg ]
|

The republication of The Confession of a Fool represents the last link in the chain of Strindberg's autobiographical novels. A German version of the book was published as far back as 1893, but it was mutilated, abbreviated, corrupted, and falsified to such an extent that the attorney-general, misled by the revolting language, blamed the author for the misdeeds of the translator and prohibited the sale of the book. This was a splendid advertisement for this profound work, but there were many who would have rejoiced if the translation had been completely ignored. It distorted Strindberg's character and was the cause of many prejudices which exist to this day. Schering's new translation is an attempt to make reparation for this crime. "It is impossible," he says, "that any attorney-general can now doubt the high morality of this book." Strindberg himself has called it a terrible book, and has regretted that he ever wrote it. He has never published it in Swedish, his own language, because not only is it too personal in character, but it also revealed a still bleeding wound. It contains the relentless description of his first marriage, so superbly candid an account, that one is reminded of the last testament of a man for whom death has no longer any terror. We know from his fascinating novel Separated, how painful the burden was which he had to bear, and how terribly he suffered during the period of his first marriage. So much so, indeed, that he had to write this book before he could face the thought of death with composure. Doubtless, a man for whom life holds no longer any charm would give us a genuinely truthful account of his inner life, and there is no denying that a book which takes its entire matter from the inner life is of vastly greater importance and on an immeasurably higher level than a million novels, be they written ever so well. The great importance of The Confession of a Fool lies in the fact that it depicts the struggle of a highly intellectual man to free himself from the slavery of sexuality, and from a woman who is a typical representative of her sex.

In his personal life, Swedish playwright and novelist August Strindberg placed great importance on personal development and progression, even if that process proved to be unbearably painful and disruptive. That value system is reflected throughout the novel The Growth of a Soul, a coming-of-age story in which the transition to a state of maturity and enlightenment extracts a significant cost.

The collocation of authors so widely at variance in their moral and artistic aims as are those assembled in this little book may be defended by the safe and simple argument that all of these authors have exerted, each in his own way, an influence of singular range and potency. By fairly general consent they are the foremost literary expositors of important modern tendencies. It is, therefore, of no consequence whether or not their ways of thinking fit into our particular frame of mind; what really matters is that in this small group of writers more clearly perhaps than in any Other similarly restricted group the basic issues of the modern struggle for social transformation appear to be clearly and sharply joined. That in viewing them as indicators of contrarious ideal currents due allowance must be made for peculiarities of temperament, both individual and racial, and, correspondingly, for the purely “personal equation” in their spiritual attitudes, does not detract to any material degree from their generic significance.

Zones of the Spirit: A Book of Thoughts【電子書籍】[ August Strindberg ]

Seldom has a man gone through such profound religious changes as this Swede, who died last May. The demonic element in him, which spurred him on restlessly, made him scale heaven and fathom hell, gave him glimpses of bliss and damnation. He bore the Cain's mark on his brow: "A fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be." He was fundamentally religious, for everyone who searches after God is so,ーa commonplace truth certainly, but one which needs to be constantly reiterated. And Strindberg's search was more painful, exact, and persevering than that of most people. He was never content with superficial formulas, but pressed to the heart of the matter, and followed each winding of the labyrinthine problem with endless patience. Too often the Divinity which he thought he had discovered turned out a delusion, to be scornfully rejected the moment afterwards. Until he found the God, whom he worshipped to the end of his days, and whose existence he resolutely maintained against deniers. As a child he had been brought up in devout belief in God, in submission to the injustice of life, and in faith in a better hereafter. He regarded God as a Father, to Whom he made known his little wants and anxieties. But a youth with hard experiences followed his childhood. The struggle for daily bread began, and his heavenly Father seemed to fail him. He appeared to regard unmoved, from some Olympian height, the desperate struggles of humanity below. Then the defiant element which slumbered in Strindberg wrathfully awoke, and he gradually developed into a free-thinker. It fared with him as it often does with young and independent characters who think. Beginning with dissent from this and that ecclesiastical dogma, his criticism embraced an ever-widening range, and became keener and more unsparing. At last every barrier of respect and reverence fell, the defiant spirit of youth broke like a flood over all religious dogmas, swept them away, and did not stop short of criticising God Himself.

August Strindberg, the Spirit of Revolt: Studies and Impressions【電子書籍】[ Lizzy Lind-af-Hageby ]
|

There have been few dispassionate attempts to discern August Strindberg's place in contemporary literature. His writings and his personality defied ordinary criticism. He took upon himself the r?le of destroyer, he mocked men's religion and men's morality, he ridiculed propriety and poured bitter scorn on the social order. There was something cometic in the swiftness and intensity with which he appeared, disturbing the well-ordered orbits of traditions and conventions. The erratic course of his voyage through humanity caused alarm. No sooner had people congratulated themselves that his terrific lust for destruction had passed by their favourite systems and their cherished ideals, than his ruthless force was upon them, exposing ugliness and scattering treasures. He passed on, making enemies, breaking idols, desecrating temples. He sowed reality and he reaped hatred. His titanic spirit worked through a brain charged with explosive mentality. He poured out dramas, novels, stories, with a versatility and an accumulating energy which in themselves were offensive to the mediocre and to those who sought to place him within literary shackles. He discoursed on history, science and statecraft with the calm assurance of omniscience. He wrote books which were decidedly and unblushingly "immoral." He compelled attention by blasphemous outbursts which filled the religious with righteous indignation and sighs for the auto-da-f?. He dissected the human heart, laid bare its meanness, its uncleanliness; made men and women turn on each other with sudden understanding and loathing, and walked away smiling at the evil he had wrought. He turned on himself with savage hatred, and in books, bearing the mark of the flagellant and reflecting the agony of a soul in torment, he pointed to his sins and his stripes.

The Growth of a Soul【電子書籍】[ August Strindberg ]

The steamer had passed Flottsund and Domstyrken and the university buildings of Upsala began to appear. "Now begins the real stone-throwing!" exclaimed one of his companions,ーan expression borrowed from the street-riots of 1864. The hilarity induced by punch and breakfast abated; one felt that things were now serious and that the battle of life was beginning. No vows of perpetual friendship were made, no promises of helping each other. The young men had awakened from their romantic dreams; they knew that they would part at the gang-way, new interests would scatter the company which the school-room had united; competition would break the bonds which had united them and all else would be forgotten. The "real stone-throwing" was about to begin. John and his friend Fritz hired a room in the Klostergr?nden. It contained two beds, two tables, two chairs and a cupboard. The rent was 30 kronas[1] a term,ー15 kronas each. Their midday meal was brought by the servant for 12 kronas a month,ー6 kronas each. For breakfast and supper they had a glass of milk and some bread and butter. That was all. They bought wood in the market,ーa small bundle for 4 kronas. John had also received a bottle of petroleum from home as a present, and he could send his washing to Stockholm. He had 80 kronas in his table-drawer with which to meet all the expenses of the term. It was a new and peculiar society into which he now entered, quite unlike any other. It had privileges like the old house of peers and a jurisdiction of its own; but it was a "little Pedlington" and reeked of rusticity. All the professors were country-born; not a single one hailed from Stockholm. The houses and streets were like those of Nyk?ping. And it was here that the head-quarters of culture had been placed, owing to an inconsistency of the government which certainly regarded Stockholm as answering to that description.

The Inferno A Stark Exploration of Mental Illness, Marriage, and Society in 19th Century Sweden【電子書籍】[ August Strindberg ]
|

In "The Inferno," August Strindberg delves into the labyrinth of the human psyche through a semi-autobiographical narrative that blends elements of the surreal with psychological introspection. Written during a tumultuous period in Strindberg's life, the novel captures his descent into madness, reflecting his struggles with existential despair and spiritual turmoil. The work is characterized by its fragmented structure and vivid imagery, drawing readers into a dreamlike exploration of inner conflicts as it navigates themes of identity, obsession, and redemption. Strindberg's innovative literary style challenges conventional narrative forms, positioning this work at the forefront of modernist literature. August Strindberg, a towering figure in Swedish literature, was profoundly influenced by his own tumultuous experiences, including tumultuous relationships and a preoccupation with the metaphysical. His deep interest in the complexities of human emotion and the interplay of sanity and madness is poignantly revealed in "The Inferno." Strindberg's encounters with the psychological crises and societal pressures of his time undoubtedly shaped this intimate exploration of the human condition, resulting in a work that resonates with themes of existentialism and individuality. I highly recommend "The Inferno" to readers who are intrigued by psychological narratives that probe the depths of the human experience. Strindberg's masterful blend of reality and surrealism invites reflection on personal identity and the nature of existence itself, making it an essential read for those eager to explore the intricate dance of sanity and insanity.

Strindberg's vivid prose and profound psychological insights invite readers to consider the nature of folly and the often-painful quest for truth in one’s life.

In his personal life, Swedish playwright and novelist August Strindberg placed great importance on personal development and progression, even if that process proved to be unbearably painful and disruptive. That value system is reflected throughout the novel 'The Growth of a Soul', a coming-of-age story in which the transition to a state of maturity and enlightenment extracts a significant cost.

Iconoclasts A Book of Dramatists: Ibsen, Strindberg, Becque, Hauptmann, Sudermann, Hervieu, Gorky, Duse and D'Annunzio, Maeterlinck and Bernard Shaw【電子書籍】[ James Huneker ]

Example in this ebook

I
HENRIK IBSEN

I
THE INDIVIDUALIST
The Kingdom of God is within you

Ferdinand Bruneti?re has declared that "there can be no tragedy without a struggle; nor can there be genuine emotion for the spectator unless something other and greater than life is at stake." This so exactly defines the dramas of Henrik Ibsen that it might have been specifically written to describe their dramatic and ethical content. Whatever else Ibsen's works may be, they are first soul dramas; the human soul is not only their shadowy protagonist, but it is the stake for which his characters breathlessly game throughout the vast halls of his poetic and historic plays and within those modern middle-class apartments, where the atmosphere seems rarefied by the intensity of the struggle. "Greater than life" means for Ibsen the immortal soulーimmortal not in the theologic, but generic sense; the soul of the species, which never had a beginning and never can have an end. With this precious entity as pawn on Ibsen's dramatic chess-board, the Bruneti?re dictum is perfectly fulfilled.

Let us apply to him and his plays a symbol; let us symbolize the arch-symbolist. Ibsen is an open door. The door enacts an important r?le with him. Nora Helmer, in A Doll's House, goes out of the door to her new life, and in The Master Builder, Hilda Wangel, typifying the younger generation, enters to Solness. An open door on the chamber of the spirit is Ibsen. Through it we view the struggle of souls in pain and doubt and wrath. He himself has said that the stage should be considered as a room with the fourth wall knocked down so that the spectators could see what is going on within the enclosure. A tragic wall is this missing one, for between the listener and the actor there is interposed the soul of the playwright, the soul of Ibsen, which, prism-like, permits us to witness the refractions of his art. This open door, this absent barrier, is it not a symbol?

What does Henrik Ibsen mean to his century? Is he dramatist, symbolist, idealist, optimist, pessimist, poet, or realist? Or is he a destructive, a corroding force? Has he constructive giftsーaside from his technical genius? He has been called an anarchic preacher. He has been described as a debaser of the moral coin. He has been ranged far from the angels, and his very poetic gifts have been challenged. Yet the surface pessimism of his plays conceals a mighty belief in the ultimate goodness of mankind. Realist as he is, his dramas are shot through with a highly imaginative symbolism. A Pegasus was killed early under him, as Georg Brandes says; but there remains a rich remnant of poesy. And may there not be deduced from his complete compositions a constructive philosophy that makes for the ennoblement of his fellow-beings?

Ibsen is a reflective poet, one to whom the idea presents itself before the picture; with Shakespeare and Goethe the idea and form were simultaneously born. His art is great and varied, yet it is never exercised as a sheer play of form or colour or wit. A Romantic originally, he pays the tax to Beauty by his vivid symbolism and his rare formal perfections. And a Romantic is always a revolutionist. Embittered in youthーproud, self-contained, reticentーhe waged war with life for over a half-century; fought for his artistic ideals as did Richard Wagner; and, like Wagner, he has swept the younger generation along with him. He, the greatest moral artist of his century, Tolstoy not excepted, was reviled for what he had not said or doneーso difficult was it to apprehend his new, elusive method. A polemist he is, as were Byron and Shelley, Tolstoy and Dickens, Turgenev and Dosto?evsky.

To be continue in this ebook
