But more importantly, because it can provide an answer to a more far-reaching question lying behind the issue of the applicability of Leech's claims to advertising slogans today: in the course of almost half a century, has advertising language changed and does a new syntactic framework need to be established? The syntactic analysis is based on syntactic features such as sentence force, number of adjuncts, finiteness of verbs, tense and aspect, voice, type of co-ordination and number of adjectives. The findings suggest that the majority of the syntactic features of current advertising slogans are still congruent with Leech's findings. As a result, the applicability of Standard Advertising English can be extended to current advertising slogans. However, certain deviations from Leech's concept have been detected in the sample and they suggest a significant development: advertising slogans have changed in certain respects since the 1960s. In Linguistics, four different types of sentence force can be distinguished, denoted as 'mood' by Leech: declarative, imperative, interrogative and exclamative. The one occurring most frequently in Leech's sample is the imperative force: in his sample, '...over one in four major independent clauses were imperative.' However, only very few imperative clauses are accompanied by a negative form since advertising aims at inciting actions instead of prohibiting them. The infrequency of negative forms, thus, represents a general principle of advertising language. Likewise, interrogative clauses are a common feature of advertising, but with only one in thirty major independent clauses being interrogative. They are also known as 'verb-particle combinations', 'phrasal verbs', 'particle verbs' (PVs) or 'separable (complex) verbs' (cf. Deh? ibid., cf. Deh?, Jackendoff, McIntyre, Urban 2002:1). VPCs formally consist of 'a verbal stem and an intransitive prepositional or adverbial element', a so-called particle (Olsen 2000:149). In linguistic research, 'there is no uncontroversial definition of particles which reliably demarcates them from similar items and has cross-linguistic validity' (Deh? et al. 2002:3) [...] According to Deh? (2002), 'the perhaps most striking property of transitive PV's in English is their appearance in two alternating orders' (3) as the English particle 'can appear on either side of a direct object, unless it is a (non-contrastively accented) pronoun' (Deh? et al. 2002:2, cf. Jackendoff ibid.). In the so-called continuous order the particle is 'adjacent to the verb and precedes the DP-complement' as in (1) (Deh? 2002:3-4). In the discontinuous order 'the particle follows the DP-object' (cf. 2) (ibid.). In this order the use of unstressed pronouns is obligatory as illustrated in (3) (ibid.; the following examples are borrowed from Deh?:ibid. as well). (1) He wiped off the table. How does the syntactic structure of VPCs in English look like? 2. How do the alternating word orders come about? 3. Which of the word orders is the underlying one? Linguists have developed many different approaches to the syntactic structure of VPCs. This paper is going to focus attention on three different syntactic analyses for English VPCs and attempts to answer the questions posed above. Before presenting the different approaches, some basic characteristics of English VPCs will be introduced. Afterwards, the approaches, namely the Small Clause analysis according to Kayne (1985) and two different complex head analyses by Johnson (1991) and Deh? It uses spoken data of English speakers with the three indigenous Ugandan languages. The results show high frequency use of left dislocation in Ugandan English. This suggests possible substrate influence from these first languages since left dislocation construction is used in these languages. The use of prepositions is overwhelmingly like in Standard English with just very few cases indicating variation from Standard English, although the three indigenous languages have very few prepositions in comparison to the English language.
