Cuentos Para El Alma Basados En La Torah y El Talmud (Spanish Edition)【電子書籍】[ Rabino Isaac Sakkal ]

Understanding the Talmud A Modern Reader's Guide for Study【電子書籍】[ Edward S. Boraz ]

In Understanding the Talmud: A Modern Reader's Guide for Study, Rabbi Edward S. Boraz presents a thoughtful introduction to the Talmud designed for study by the untrained reader. Using a unique approach, Rabbi Boraz focuses on a specific selection from one tractate of the Talmud, allowing readers to uncover the moral and theological concerns of the text. The portion he has selected comes from the tractate Bava Metziah and deals with the conditions under which an oath may be administered in a civil lawsuit. On the surface this issue appears mundane and far removed from the domain of holiness. However, when the discourse is studied in relation to passages from Scripture, Midrash, and Mishnah that are also presented, it becomes a spiritual and ethical adventure. Before embarking on this journey of discovery, the reader is given a concise explanation of the rules of logic and the argumentative style utilized in the Talmud. It becomes evident that the Talmud's style is essential to its mission to understand the timeless messages of Torah in the context of the ever-changing world in which we live. Equipped with the necessary background, the reader is prepared to delve into the texts.

Migrating Tales The Talmud's Narratives and Their Historical Context【電子書籍】[ Richard Kalmin ]

Migrating Tales situates the Babylonian Talmud, or Bavli, in its cultural context by reading several rich rabbinic stories against the background of Greek, Syriac, Arabic, Persian, and Mesopotamian literature of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, much of it Christian in origin. In this nuanced work, Richard Kalmin argues that non-Jewish literature deriving from the eastern Roman provinces is a crucially important key to interpreting Babylonian rabbinic literature, to a degree unimagined by earlier scholars. Kalmin demonstrates the extent to which rabbinic Babylonia was part of the Mediterranean world of late antiquity and part of the emerging but never fully realized cultural unity forming during this period in Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia, and western Persia.

Kalmin recognizes that the Bavli contains remarkable diversity, incorporating motifs derived from the cultures of contemporaneous religious and social groups. Looking closely at the intimate relationship between narratives of the Bavli and of the Christian Roman Empire, Migrating Tales brings the history of Judaism and Jewish culture into the ambit of the ancient world as a whole.

Law and Self-Knowledge in the Talmud【電子書籍】[ Ayelet Hoffmann Libson ]

This book examines the emergence of self-knowledge as a determining legal consideration among the rabbis of Late Antiquity, from the third to the seventh centuries CE. Based on close readings of rabbinic texts from Palestine and Babylonia, Ayelet Hoffmann Libson highlights a unique and surprising development in Talmudic jurisprudence, whereby legal decision-making incorporated personal and subjective information. She examines the central legal role accorded to individuals' knowledge of their bodies and mental states in areas of law as diverse as purity laws, family law and the laws of Sabbath. By focusing on subjectivity and self-reflection, the Babylonian rabbis transformed earlier legal practices in a way that cohered with the cultural concerns of other religious groups in Late Antiquity. They developed sophisticated ideas about the inner self and incorporated these notions into their distinctive discourse of law.

This fascinating narrative illustrates and clarifies rabbinic views relating to more than 250 topics.

The Talmud has been a source of study and debate for well over a millennia. What the Rabbis Said: 250 Topics from the Talmud brings that discussion out of the yeshiva to describe and clarify the views of the talmudic rabbis for modern readers. Much more than a compilation of isolated rabbinic quotations, the book intersperses talmudic statements within the narrative to provide a thoroughly engaging examination of the rabbinic point of view.

Exploring the development of traditional Jewish thought during its formative period, the book summarizes the major rabbinic comments from the vast expanse of the Talmud and midrashic literature, demonstrating, among other things, that the rabbis often took divergent positions on a given issue rather than agreeing on a single "party line." As it delves into such broad topics as God, the Torah, mitzvot, law and punishment, synagogue and prayer, and life-cycle events, What the Rabbis Said will help readers understand and appreciate the views of those who developed the rabbinic Judaism that persists to the present day.

In the aftermath of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 C.E., he helped shape a new direction for Judaism through his brilliance and his character. Mystic, legalist, theologian, and interpreter, he disputed with his colleagues in dramatic fashion yet was admired and beloved by his peers. Executed by Roman authorities for his insistence on teaching Torah in public, he became the exemplar of Jewish martyrdom.
?
Drawing on the latest historical and literary scholarship, this book goes beyond older biographies, untangling a complex assortment of ancient sources to present a clear and nuanced portrait of Talmudic hero Rabbi Akiva.

Rabbis and Classical Rhetoric Sophistic Education and Oratory in the Talmud and Midrash【電子書籍】[ Richard Hidary ]

Training in rhetoric - the art of persuasion - formed the basis of education in the Roman Empire. The classical intellectual world centered around the debate between philosophers, who boasted knowledge of objective reality, and sophists, who could debate both sides of any issue and who attracted large audiences and paying students. The roles of the Talmudic rabbis as public orators, teachers, and jurists, parallel that of Roman orators. Rabbinic literature adopted and adapted various aspects of the classical rhetorical tradition, as is demonstrated in the Talmudic penchant for arguing both sides of hypothetical cases, the midrashic hermeneutical methods, and the structure of synagogue sermons. At the same time, the rabbis also resisted the extreme epistemological relativism of rhetoric as is evident in their restraint on theoretical argumentation, their depiction of rabbinic and divine court procedure, and their commitment to the biblical prophetic tradition. Richard Hidary demonstrates how rabbis succeeded in navigating a novel path between platonic truth and rhetorical relativism.

The Choice A Novel of Love, Faith, and Talmud【電子書籍】[ Maggie Anton ]

A powerful love story with a purpose: to challenge Jewish customs concerning women, marriage, and equality. The award-winning author of Rashi's Daughters, Maggie Anton, has written a wholly transformative novel that takes characters inspired by Chaim Potok and ages them into young adults in Brooklyn in the 1950s, a time of Elvis & Marilyn, communist scares & polio vaccines, Jewish migration & American integration. When Hannah Eisen, a successful journalist, interviews Rabbi Nathan Mandel, a controversial Talmud professor, she persuades him to teach her the mysteries of the text forbidden to womenーeven though it might cost him his job if discovered. Secret meetings and lively discussions bring the two to the edge of a line that neither dares to cross, as their relationships with each other and Judaism are tested.

Talmud as Philosophy The Problem of Evil and the Search for Wisdom in Rabbinic Language【電子書籍】[ Gabe Eisenstein ]

The bulk of this volume consists of readings of two sections of the Babylonian Talmud (the Bavli): the section on the “Three Kings” (who are excluded from the world to come), beginning at Sanhedrin 101b, and the section containing the “Evil Inclination” parable, beginning at Yoma 69a. In addition there are short pieces dealing with the “Ten Tribes” debate (Sanhedrin 110b), the discussion of the two Hebrew alphabets (Sanhedrin 21b), the interpretation of dreams (Berachoth 55a), the four men who “entered paradise” (Chagigah 15b), and the instruction to “give thanks for evil” (Berachoth 60b). The point of view of these readings is that of a sympathetic outsider. It was my hope as I began this project that my naivete as a student of Judaism might have its own virtue, in that I could regard the texts with fresh eyes, and might see some things that piety and respect for authority tend to render invisible. Several years later, I feel as if I have uncovered treasures beyond my wildest expectation. I have found that traditional interpretation underestimates the level of thinking in the Talmudic text, by taking it too literally. Mythic and legendary stories, along with far-fetched leaps of language, have traditionally been treated with extreme credulity and reverence, when the text demands just the opposite: a creative engagement that penetrates to the underlying ethical, political and spiritual questions. That was how the rabbis themselves proceeded. The book should appeal to secular Jews, philosophers and progressives (as well as traditionalists willing to take a fresh look). The author considers himself to be making a contribution to contemporary philosophy, as well as to the interpretation of the Talmud.

The Babylonian Talmud, all 20 volumes in a single file【電子書籍】[ Michael Rodkinson ]

The Talmud, from the 1903 and 1918 editions of the translation by Michael Rodkinson, all 20 volumes. The introduction, by Gustav Karpeles, is from the book "Jewish Literature and Other Essays". This edition is intended for modern readers. It consists of of twenty volumes, translated and edited by Michael Rodkinson and then revised and corrected by Dr Isaac M. Wise, founder of the Reform Jewish movement and President of the Hebrew Union College. The introduction, by Gustav Karpeles, is from the book "Jewish Literature and Other Essays". The Babylonian Talmud (Oral Law) is the third edition of the Talmud. Regarded as the authoritative version, it is studied by Rabbis and other scholars. The Talmud, or (Oral Law) evolved over time. The first part of the Talmud (Oral Law) was recorded in the year 200 C.E. (A.D.). The Mishna, as it is called, explained the 613 commandments found in the Torah (Written Law, the first five books of the Bible, attributed to Moses). Later, rabbis added commentaries, known as Gemara. The Talmud is a guide for living in accord with the Torah (Written Law). While the Torah codifies behaviors through the 613 commandments, the Talmud provides further discussion and the legal “how” to carry out the commandments. It expands guidelines and provides clarification by establishing rituals, explains how to observe laws in the Torah, and interprets those laws so that they can be carried out in a humane way. For ease of navigation through this massive work, we have added thousands of links. Each volume begins with a summary (explanatory remarks) followed by the linked table of contents for that volume. Then comes an introduction and a synopsis of that subject. The synopsis has links to Mishnas. Click on the Mishna and view that text followed by related Gemaras. Legends of Old Testament characters, from the Talmud and other sources【電子書籍】[ S. Baring-Gould ]

In the beginning, before the creation of heaven and earth, God made the angels; free intelligences and free wills; out of His love He made them, that they might be eternally happy. And that their happiness might be complete, He gave them the perfection of a created nature; that is, He gave them freedom.

But happiness is only attainable by the free will agreeing in its freedom to accord with the will of God. Some of the angels by an act of free will obeyed the will of God, and in such obedience found perfect happiness; other angels by an act of free will rebelled against the will of God, and in such disobedience found misery.

Such is the catholic theory of the fall of the angels.
