**“I could not put it down.”ーA. J. Jacobs, author of The Year of Living Biblically

A witty and wide-ranging exploration of a book that has perplexed and delighted people for centuries: the Talmud.**

For numerous centuries, the Talmudーan extraordinary work of Jewish ethics, law, and traditionーhas compelled readers to grapple with how to live a good life. Full of folk legends, bawdy tales, and rabbinical repartee, it is inspiring, demanding, confounding, and thousands of pages long. As Liel Leibovitz enthusiastically explores the Talmud, what has sometimes been misunderstood as a dusty and arcane volume becomes humanity’s first self-help book. How the Talmud Can Change Your Life contains sage advice on an unparalleled scope of topics, which includes communicating with your partner, dealing with grief, and being a friend.

Leibovitz guides readers through the sprawling text with all its humor, rich insights, compulsively readable stories, and multilayered conversations. Contemporary discussions framed by Talmudic philosophy and psychology draw on subjects ranging from Weight Watchers and the Dewey decimal system to the lives of Billie Holiday and C. S. Lewis. Chapters focus on fundamental human experiencesーthe mind-body problem, the power of community, the challenges of loveーto illuminate how the Talmud speaks to our daily existence. As Leibovitz explores some of life’s greatest questions, he also delivers a concise history of the Talmud itself, explaining the process of its lengthy compilation and organization.

With infectious passion and candor, Leibovitz brilliantly displays how the Talmud’s wisdom reverberates for the modern age and how it can, indeed, change your life.

Migrating Tales The Talmud's Narratives and Their Historical Context【電子書籍】[ Richard Kalmin ]
|

Migrating Tales situates the Babylonian Talmud, or Bavli, in its cultural context by reading several rich rabbinic stories against the background of Greek, Syriac, Arabic, Persian, and Mesopotamian literature of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, much of it Christian in origin. In this nuanced work, Richard Kalmin argues that non-Jewish literature deriving from the eastern Roman provinces is a crucially important key to interpreting Babylonian rabbinic literature, to a degree unimagined by earlier scholars. Kalmin demonstrates the extent to which rabbinic Babylonia was part of the Mediterranean world of late antiquity and part of the emerging but never fully realized cultural unity forming during this period in Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia, and western Persia.

Kalmin recognizes that the Bavli contains remarkable diversity, incorporating motifs derived from the cultures of contemporaneous religious and social groups. Looking closely at the intimate relationship between narratives of the Bavli and of the Christian Roman Empire, Migrating Tales brings the history of Judaism and Jewish culture into the ambit of the ancient world as a whole.

The Talmud, a cornerstone of Jewish literature and thought, is a comprehensive compilation of rabbinical debates, legal discussions, and ethical teachings that spans centuries. It consists of the Mishnah, the foundational text of Oral Law, and the Gemara, which elaborates on the Mishnah through commentaries and discussions. Written in a dialect of Aramaic and Hebrew, the Talmud employs a unique literary style, characterized by its dialectical method, juxtaposition of differing opinions, and intricate logical reasoning. This body of work not only serves as a legal code but also provides profound insights into the cultural, religious, and philosophical aspects of Jewish life, reflecting the dynamic interplay between tradition and contemporary issues throughout the ages. The Talmud has been shaped by various authors throughout Jewish history, including famed rabbis such as Hillel and Shammai, whose teachings influence its content. Understanding the Talmud A Modern Reader's Guide for Study【電子書籍】[ Edward S. Boraz ]
|

In Understanding the Talmud: A Modern Reader's Guide for Study, Rabbi Edward S. Boraz presents a thoughtful introduction to the Talmud designed for study by the untrained reader. Using a unique approach, Rabbi Boraz focuses on a specific selection from one tractate of the Talmud, allowing readers to uncover the moral and theological concerns of the text. The portion he has selected comes from the tractate Bava Metziah and deals with the conditions under which an oath may be administered in a civil lawsuit. On the surface this issue appears mundane and far removed from the domain of holiness. However, when the discourse is studied in relation to passages from Scripture, Midrash, and Mishnah that are also presented, it becomes a spiritual and ethical adventure. Before embarking on this journey of discovery, the reader is given a concise explanation of the rules of logic and the argumentative style utilized in the Talmud. It becomes evident that the Talmud's style is essential to its mission to understand the timeless messages of Torah in the context of the ever-changing world in which we live. Equipped with the necessary background, the reader is prepared to delve into the texts.

Other Others The Political after the Talmud【電子書籍】[ Sergey Dolgopolski ]
|

Denying recognition or even existence to certain others, while still tolerating diversity, stabilizes a political order; or does it? Revisiting this classical question of political theory, the book turns to the Talmud. That late ancient body of text and thought displays a new concept of the political, and thus a new take on the question of excluded others. Philosophy- and theology-driven approaches to the concept of the political have tacitly elided a concept of the political which the Talmud displays; yet, that elision becomes noticeable only by a methodical rereading of the pages of the Talmud through and despite the lens of contemporary competing theological and philosophical theories of the political. The book commits such rereading of the Talmud, which at the same time is a reconsideration of contemporary political theory. In that way, The Political intervenes both to the study of the Talmud and Jewish Thought in its aftermath, and to political theory in general.

The question of the political for the excluded others, or for those who programmatically do not claim any “original” belonging to a particular territory comes at the forefront of analysis in the book. Other Others approaches this question by moving from a modern political figure of “Jew” as such an “other other” to the late ancient texts of the Talmud. The pages of the Talmud emerge in the book as a (dis)appearing display of the interpersonal rather than intersubjective political. The argument in the book arrives, at the end, to a demand to think earth anew, now beyond the notions of territory, land, nationalism or internationalism, or even beyond the notion of universe, that have defined the thinking of earth so far.

Within this close textual analysis of the Babylonian Talmud, Yishai Kiel explores rabbinic discussions of sex in light of cultural assumptions and dispositions that pervaded the cultures of late antiquity and particularly the Iranian world. By negotiating the Iranian context of the rabbinic discussion alongside the Christian backdrop, this groundbreaking volume presents a balanced and nuanced portrayal of the rabbinic discourse on sexuality and situates rabbinic discussions of sex more broadly at the crossroads of late antique cultures. The study is divided into two thematic sections: the first centers on the broader aspects of rabbinic discourse on sexuality while the second hones in on rabbinic discussions of sexual prohibitions and the classification of permissible and prohibited partnerships, with particular attention to rabbinic discussions of incest. Essential reading for scholars and graduate students of Judaic studies, early Christianity, and Iranian studies, as well as those interested in religious studies and comparative religion.

Come and Hear What I Saw in My Seven-and-a-Half-Year Journey through the Talmud【電子書籍】[ Adam Kirsch ]
|

A literary critic’s journey through the Talmud.

Spurred by a curiosity about Daf Yomiーa study program launched in the 1920s in which Jews around the world read one page of the Talmud every day for 2,711 days, or about seven and a half yearsーAdam Kirsch approached Tablet magazine to write a weekly column about his own Daf Yomi experience. An avowedly secular Jew, Kirsch did not have a religious source for his interest in the Talmud; rather, as a student of Jewish literature and history, he came to realize that he couldn’t fully explore these subjects without some knowledge of the Talmud. This book is perfect for readers who are in a similar position. Most people have little sense of what the Talmud actually isーhow the text moves, its preoccupations and insights, and its moments of strangeness and profundity. As a critic and journalist Kirsch has experience in exploring difficult texts, discussing what he finds there, and why it matters. His exploration into the Talmud is best described as a kind of travel writingーa report on what he saw during his seven-and-a-half-year journey through the Talmud. For readers who want to travel that same path, there is no better guide.

"Hebraic Literature, Translations From the Talmud" is a book written by Maurice H. Harris. It appears to be a collection of translations from the Talmud, a central text in Rabbinic Judaism that contains discussions and interpretations of Jewish law, ethics, customs, and history. The Talmud is composed of two main parts: the Mishnah (a compilation of Jewish oral laws) and the Gemara (commentaries and discussions on the Mishnah).Maurice H. Harris, likely the author or translator of this work, would have undertaken the task of making the content of the Talmud more accessible to English-speaking audiences. Translating the Talmud can be a complex endeavor, as the text often includes discussions in Aramaic, a language related to Hebrew. Translators need to convey not only the literal meaning of the text but also the nuanced interpretations and insights that are part of the Talmudic tradition.

The old paths, or the Talmud tested by Scripture Being a comparison of the principles and doctrines of modern Judaism with the religion of Moses and the prophets【電子書籍】[ Alexander McCaul ]

In "The Old Paths, or the Talmud Tested by Scripture," Alexander McCaul meticulously examines the intricate relationship between the Talmud and the Hebrew Scriptures. Employing a rigorous scholarly approach, McCaul dissects various Talmudic interpretations and juxtaposes them with scriptural texts, revealing contradictions and affirming principles. The book is characterized by its clear, rational prose, drawing on a wealth of historical and exegetical resources to contextualize the Talmud within both Jewish tradition and Christian thought, thereby offering a critical inquiry into how these texts have shaped theological discourse. Alexander McCaul, a prominent Anglican theologian and biblical scholar of the 19th century, dedicated much of his work to the study of Jewish texts and their implications for Christian theology. His deep appreciation for Jewish scholarship, combined with his commitment to a rigorous understanding of Scripture, motivated him to engage critically with the Talmud. McCaul's rich background in biblical languages and early church history equipped him to tackle this complex topic, making his insights invaluable to both theologians and historians. This book is highly recommended for scholars of theology, history, and religious studies seeking to deepen their understanding of the Talmud's interaction with the Hebrew Scriptures. McCaul's analytical lens not only elucidates Jewish thought but also engages Christian readers in reflection on the continuity and divergence of religious beliefs, making this work an essential resource in the study of interfaith dialogue.

Maron L. Waxman, Jewish Book Council

≪Rabbi Akiva disse: ≪Ama il prossimo tuo come te stesso (Levitico 19, 18). Questo ? il pi? grande principio della Torah!≫. ≫
Bereshit Rabbah, 24, 7

The Forward - Burton L. Visotzky

Jesus in the Talmud【電子書籍】[ Peter Sch?fer ]
|

Scattered throughout the Talmud, the founding document of rabbinic Judaism in late antiquity, can be found quite a few references to Jesus--and they're not flattering. In this lucid, richly detailed, and accessible book, Peter Sch?fer examines how the rabbis of the Talmud read, understood, and used the New Testament Jesus narrative to assert, ultimately, Judaism's superiority over Christianity.

The Talmudic stories make fun of Jesus' birth from a virgin, fervently contest his claim to be the Messiah and Son of God, and maintain that he was rightfully executed as a blasphemer and idolater. They subvert the Christian idea of Jesus' resurrection and insist he got the punishment he deserved in hell--and that a similar fate awaits his followers.

Sch?fer contends that these stories betray a remarkable familiarity with the Gospels--especially Matthew and John--and represent a deliberate and sophisticated anti-Christian polemic that parodies the New Testament narratives. He carefully distinguishes between Babylonian and Palestinian sources, arguing that the rabbis' proud and self-confident countermessage to that of the evangelists was possible only in the unique historical setting of Persian Babylonia, in a Jewish community that lived in relative freedom. The same could not be said of Roman and Byzantine Palestine, where the Christians aggressively consolidated their political power and the Jews therefore suffered.

A departure from past scholarship, which has played down the stories as unreliable distortions of the historical Jesus, Jesus in the Talmud posits a much more deliberate agenda behind these narratives.

|

Babylonian Talmud Book 1 (Vols. I and II)
Translated by Michael L. Rodkinson

On this, the appearance of our latest literary undertaking, we deem a few explanatory remarks necessary. The brief outline of the origin of the Talmud that follows may suggest the thought that we have departed from the usual manner of dealing with the questions here discussed, the more so since we have, for the sake of brevity, refrained from citing the authorities on which our statements are based. We wish, therefore, to declare here that we do not venture to make a single statement without the support of authorities well known in Hebrew literature. Our method is to select such views as seem to us the best authenticated in the historical progress of Judaism. As we have taken our choice from the numerous works on our subject, the student is entitled to adopt or to reject the views that we represent.

Most of the Mishnayoth date from a very early period, and originated with the students of the Jewish academies which existed since the days of Jehoshaphat, King of Judah.

The rabbinical students of ancient times noted the essence of the academical teachings in brief form, and, as a rule, in the idiom in which it was spoken to them, so that they could afterward easily commit it to memory. They have sometimes, however, added comments and extensive explanations in the form of notes, so that the mass of their learning, embraced in course of time, according to some authorities, as many as six hundred divisions.

What the Rabbis Said 250 Topics from the Talmud【電子書籍】[ Ronald L. Eisenberg M.D. ]

This fascinating narrative illustrates and clarifies rabbinic views relating to more than 250 topics.

The Talmud has been a source of study and debate for well over a millennia. What the Rabbis Said: 250 Topics from the Talmud brings that discussion out of the yeshiva to describe and clarify the views of the talmudic rabbis for modern readers. Much more than a compilation of isolated rabbinic quotations, the book intersperses talmudic statements within the narrative to provide a thoroughly engaging examination of the rabbinic point of view.

Exploring the development of traditional Jewish thought during its formative period, the book summarizes the major rabbinic comments from the vast expanse of the Talmud and midrashic literature, demonstrating, among other things, that the rabbis often took divergent positions on a given issue rather than agreeing on a single "party line." As it delves into such broad topics as God, the Torah, mitzvot, law and punishment, synagogue and prayer, and life-cycle events, What the Rabbis Said will help readers understand and appreciate the views of those who developed the rabbinic Judaism that persists to the present day.

|

In "The Old Paths, or the Talmud Tested by Scripture," Alexander McCaul presents a critical examination of the Talmud's teachings through the lens of biblical Scripture. This scholarly work is meticulously structured, employing a rigorous analytical style that showcases McCaul's deep engagement with both rabbinical texts and Christian scripture. At the intersection of biblical exegesis and Jewish tradition, the book aims to illuminate the discrepancies and convergences between the two, fostering a deeper understanding of their theological implications. McCaul situates his work within the context of 19th-century debates on the authority of scripture, making it both a historical and theological inquiry that resonates profoundly with contemporary discussions about faith and religious texts. Alexander McCaul, a noted theologian and biblical scholar of the 19th century, was deeply influenced by the growing interest in Jewish studies and the historical-critical method of theology during his time. His background, having engaged with both Jewish and Christian communities, provided him with a unique perspective that sought to bridge the gap between faith traditions, while also advocating for a Christ-centered interpretation of the Hebrew scriptures. McCaul's commitment to scholarly rigor and his ecclesiastical vocation strongly influenced the arguments and insights presented in this work. For readers interested in the intersections of Judaism and Christianity, "The Old Paths" offers a compelling and insightful analysis that is not only academically enriching but also spiritually provocative.
