The Three Taverns: A Book of Poems【電子書籍】[ Edwin Arlington Robinson ]
|

In "The Three Taverns: A Book of Poems," Edwin Arlington Robinson explores the depths of human experience through a series of poignant and introspective verses. Published in 1920, this collection showcases Robinson's sophisticated use of blank verse and his keen observation of life's ephemeral nature. The poems, often infused with the ambiance of small-town America, reflect themes of loneliness, mortality, and the complexity of personal relationships. Robinson's literary style combines a lyrical quality with philosophical undertones, giving voice to the struggles and triumphs of everyday life, all while drawing on the rich tradition of American realism. Edwin Arlington Robinson, a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, drew from his own experiences of isolation and longing throughout his life, particularly during his early years in Gardiner, Maine. His personal encounters with loss and disappointment often permeated his work, providing a deeply empathetic lens through which he examined the human condition. These themes resonate powerfully in "The Three Taverns," as Robinson crafts a narrative that is both universal in its emotional depth and unique to his own experiences. I highly recommend "The Three Taverns" to readers who appreciate poetry that marries psychological insight with artistic expression. Robinson's masterful craftsmanship and emotional authenticity invite reflection and provoke thought, making this collection a lasting contribution to American poetry.

The Public House in Central Europe Inns, Taverns, and Alehouses in Cracow during the Jagiellonian Dynasty【電子書籍】[ Peter Paul Dobek ]
|

Public houses-inns, taverns, and alehouses-during the Jagiellonian Dynasty (1385-1572) in the city of Cracow functioned as important establishments in the everyday life of the city. While the city continued to grow and prosper as the preferred residence of the dynasty, inhabitants, travelers, and migrants increasingly relied on the public houses of the conurbation to meet their many needs and desires. Although scholars have studied these establishments throughout Europe during various epochs, they have neglected to analyze the public houses in Cracow during the Jagiellonian era. The Public House in Central Europe: Inns, Taverns, and Alehouses in Cracow during the Jagiellonian Dynasty provides a comprehensive examination of a multitude of sources to reconstruct qualitatively and quantitatively the public houses of the city. This reconstruction reveals public houses' role in the history of the city, their locations, edifices, related activities, and people, including publicans, clients, and others. This book places the establishments of Cracow at the center of a deeply debated topic about the extent and types of violence in public houses, which further addresses their many functions. Contrary to some contemporary accounts and some current secondary literature, the establishments were fundamental to the everyday life of the city and were not centers of nefarious acts.

Historic Columbus Taverns The Capital City's Most Storied Saloons【電子書籍】[ Tom Betti ]
|

One of the first buildings in Central Ohio in the 1790s was a tavern and 200 years later--Columbus as a "foodie" town shows renewed interest in discovering its historic "liquid assets." Once historic taverns in frontier Columbus featured live bears chained to giant wheels, pumping water for travelers in need of a shower and giving new meaning to the term "watering hole." Existing historic taverns in Columbus span from 1830s through the 1930s and still have little-known histories, stories, scandals, as well as, architectural fabric to explore. One is built on a still active graveyard; another is in the building of a former Pentecostal church. Several remain from the Irish and German migrations and survived Prohibition; one was the quintessential gentlemen's bar still with pool room that connected by underground tunnel to the Ohio Statehouse in a time of temperance. Another was both a tavern and a bordello for Union and Confederate officers (though on different nights). Set in the social and political historic context of a changing city, the taverns offer a chance to explore the city's history through its watering holes.

Closing Time Saloons, Taverns, Dives, and Watering Holes of the Twin Cities【電子書籍】[ Bill Lindeke ]

Authors Bill Lindeke and Andy Sturdevant highlight the drinking establishments that have played small but influential roles in Twin Cities life and history. Starting with the earliest frontier saloons, the book is a multigenerational bar crawl through blind pigs, speakeasies, rathskellars, cocktail lounges, gin mills, fern bars, social clubs, singles bars, gastropubs, and dives. There has been no book in recent years that has attempted to take a broad historical perspective of the Twin Cities’ bars, taverns and saloons over the past 150 years. This book will fill that gap. Marketed towards those interested in the history of alcohol consumption in the US, social histories of Twin Cities communities, architectural ephemera, anecdotes and photography from long-gone parts of the Twin Cities landscape. Features storytelling that is engaging, enlightening, and funny. Bill Lindeke, Ph.D ., is an urban geographer and writer who focuses on how our environments shape our lives. He wrote MinnPost’s Cityscapes column from 2014 to 2017, has written articles on local food and drink history for City Pages and the Growler , has taught urban geography at the University of Minnesota and Metro State University. He writes a local urban blog at Twin City Sidewalks, and is a member of the Saint Paul Planning Commission. Andy Sturdevant is a writer living in Minneapolis. Chinese Poetry from Zhou to Ming (1000BC-1647AD) The Dynasty-by-Dynasty Evolution of a Civilization From Ancient Hymns to Tang Taverns And Beyond【電子書籍】[ Arthur Waley ]
|

For generations, Arthur Waley's lyrical translations served as the primary gateway to Chinese poetry for the English-speaking world. Celebrated for rendering classical verse into enduring English poetry, his work reached both popular and scholarly audiences

This volume presents a definitive chronological collection of Arthur Waley's seminal translations, Organized by dynasty, this edition transforms Waley's scattered masterpieces into a coherent historical journey through Chinese literature, from the ancient Zhou foundational texts to the twilight of the Tang. This structure reveals the evolving concerns of Chinese civilization, from ritual and statecraft to intimate personal reflection and profound philosophical inquiry, all through Waley's singular poetic voice.

Waley, a self-taught scholar who never visited Asia yet won the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry, rendered classical verse into enduring English poetry, creating a bridge between scholarly precision and accessible artistry that continues to define the Western encounter with China's poetic heritage.

From the solemn hymns of ancient courts to the wine-stained verses of Tang Dynasty taverns, this definitive volume opens a gateway to the golden age of Chinese poetry. It begins with the folk rituals and moral wisdom of the Zhou Book of Songs (Shijing) and the political elegies of the Han. A pivotal shift occurs in the Six Dynasties period, exemplified by the recluse poet T'ao Ch'ien (Tao Yuanming), whose verses on rustic solitude, farming, and wine established a paradigm of Daoist-inspired personal spirituality that Waley championed.

This sets the stage for the Tang dynasty, China's poetic golden age. Here, the romantic genius of Li Po (Li Bai), the wandering Daoist immortal, dominates the High Tang period with his extravagant imagery and emotional intensity. The focus then shifts to the Mid and Late Tang, profoundly shaped by the populist master Po Ch?-i (Bai Juyi). A reformist official, Po Ch?-i crafted deliberately accessible, narrative verse concerned with social reality, governance, and personal loss.

Witness the world through a lens of profound simplicity, feel the enduring human passions of solitude, friendship, loss, and delight, and discover the timeless voice of a civilization that found its purest expression in the perfect line.

Houses of Ill Repute The Archaeology of Brothels, Houses, and Taverns in the Greek World【電子書籍】
|

The study of ancient Greek urbanism has moved from examining the evidence for town planning and the organization of the city-state, or polis, to considerations of "everyday life." That is, it has moved from studying the public (fortifications, marketplaces, council houses, gymnasiums, temples, theaters, fountain houses) to studying the private (the physical remains of Greek houses). But what of those buildings that housed activities neither public nor privateーbrothels, taverns, and other homes of illicit activity? Can they be distinguished from houses? Were businesses like these run from homes? Classical Athenian writers attest to a diverse urban landscape that included tenement houses (sunoikiai), inns (diaitai, pandokeia), factories (ergasteria), taverns (kapelia), gambling dens (skirapheia), training schools (didaskaleia), and brothels (porneia), yet, despite our knowledge of specific terms, associating them with actual physical remains has not been easy. One such writer, Isaeus, mentions tenement houses that hosted prostitutes and wine sellers, while his contemporary Aeschines refers to doctors, smiths, fullers, carpenters, and pimps renting space. Were tenement houses not simply multi-inhabitant spaces but also multipurpose ones?

Houses of Ill Repute is the first book to focus on the difficulties of distinguishing private and semiprivate spaces. While others have studied houses or brothels, this volume looks at both together. The chapters, by leading scholars in the field, address such questions as "What is a house?" and "Did the business of prostitution leave behind a unique archaeological record?" Presenting several approaches to identifying and studying distinctions between domestic residences and houses of ill repute, and drawing on the fields of literature, history, and art history and theory, the volume's contributors provide a way forward for the study of domestic and entertainment spaces in the Hellenic world.

Contributors: Bradley A. The Inns and Taverns of "Pickwick"【電子書籍】[ B. W. Matz ]

Literary criticism about The Pickwick Papers by Dickens. According to the author: "Dickens, like all great authors, had a tendency to underestimate the value of his most popular book. At any rate, it is certainly on record that he thought considerably more of some of his other works than he did of the immortal Pickwick. But The Pickwick Papers has maintained its place through generations, and retains it to-day, as the most popular book in our language--a book unexampled in our literature."

Accommodating the Republic Taverns in the Early United States【電子書籍】[ Kirsten E. Wood ]

People have gathered in public drinking places to drink, relax, socialize, and do business for hundreds of years. For just as long, critics have described taverns and similar drinking establishments as sources of individual ruin and public disorder. Examining these dynamics as Americans surged westward in the early nineteenth century, Kirsten E. Wood argues that entrepreneurial, improvement-minded men integrated many village and town taverns into the nation’s rapidly developing transportation network and used tavern spaces and networks to raise capital, promote innovative businesses, practice genteel sociability, and rally support for favored causesーoften while drinking the staggering amounts of alcohol for which the period is justly famous. White men’s unrivaled freedom to use taverns for their own pursuits of happiness gave everyday significance to citizenship in the early republic. Yet white men did not have taverns to themselves.

Sharing tavern spaces with other Americans intensified white men’s struggles to define what, and for whom, taverns should be. At the same time, temperance and other reform movements increasingly divided white men along lines of party, conscience, and class. In both conflicts, some improvement-minded white men found common cause with middle-class white women and Black activists, who had their own stake in rethinking taverns and citizenship.

What kinds of steamy adventures happen behind the scenes, when our heroes and heroines are trekking along their journey?

The word "fantasy" evokes many different responses in people, but the epic fantasy quest is the heart of the genre. Heroes and heroines set off to defeat evil. Haven't you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes, during the downtime the authors gloss over? "What Happens at the Tavern Stays at the Tavern" gives us the peek behind the curtains we've all been waiting for.

In "Encounter at the Lonely Dragon," Elinor Gray stays true to the title of the anthology, telling the tale of a would-be quester who has an unexpected run-in with a former lover in the secluded loft of a tavern's stable. "Orin's Strand" by Vivien Jackson weaves a story of a seer in love who can't resist the temptation to use her powersーand her bodyーto bind her lover to her. Kierstin Cherry's "Paget and the Princess" follows Paget, a Knight of the Guard, sworn to protect her princessーand her princess's chastityーwho nonetheless can't resist the princess's warm bosom and soft lips.

In "The Place Where Heroes Are Made" by Sarah Ellis, we find ourselves in another tavern, this one run by a family that beds those heroes marked by the gods as doomed so that they don't go childless into unknown lands. "Crystalline Sorcery" by Julie Cox explores the sexual identity of Heid, a female warrior who longs to be able to penetrate as a man, and her elven companion, a priestess who insists that the divide between male and female is not so inflexible as Heid thinks. Finally, "Flings and Arrows" by Andrea Trask lets us in on the journey of Alleria, a woman who is the key to fulfilling a prophecyーbut when a mysterious man kidnaps her and reaches between her legs to confirm that she's a virgin, all may be lost.

In her latest anthology, editor Jennifer Levine invites you to escape into a world of fantasy, one where you get magic, warriors, fantasy worlds, and sex.
